Who are the heroes of your neighborhood? In our latest episode of Out of the Archives, “Beauty is Remembered: A Mother's Fight for Public Housing,” we honor the legacy of Ms. Beauty Turner, a mother, journalist, historian, and community activist who lived in Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes for over a decade. Listen to Larry Turner, the son of Ms. Beauty, and other former Robert Taylor residents discuss the community's complex and rich history, and share why neighborhood heroes like Beauty are critical to public housing communities.Click here to read the transcript.Content Notes: This episode discusses themes of death/dying, drug use, state-sanctioned displacement, and houselessness.Sources and additional reading:Sundhir Venkatesh, Dislocation (2005): https://vimeo.com/505211639 Flavian Prince and Daniel Rudin, Interrupt the Pipeline (2009): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOJ8om06PU4 Nuri Medina II, Englewood Enterprise Gallery Dec. 6, 2017 Show, Chicago Access Network Television (2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0ksh7OHUjY Beauty Turner, “GHETTO Bus Tour” (2007, Associated Press Archive): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKoTEH3ya2Y Mick Dumke, “Chicago Claims Its 22-Year ‘Transformation' Plan Revitalized 25,000 Homes. Our guest: JULIE WOOD felt stuck for much of her life in the conditioning that she calls the “Good Girl Program” - which left her over-thinking, over-performing and over-conforming - afraid to be herself. She followed all the Rules, graduated from Princeton and spent 18 years managing big advertising clients like PepsiCo and JPMorgan Chase. Despite her outer success she felt inauthentic and unfulfilled.Nine years ago, she left it all behind, setting off with her now-husband on a 5-year Spirit Journey in a little Jeep Wrangler, visiting 69 countries along the way. While traveling through Mexico and South America, she was introduced to the “niños santos” (psilocybin mushrooms) in the mountains of Oaxaca and participated in over 50 plant medicine ceremonies. Eventually she started supporting others in the ceremonial space, which she still does today at retreats in Mexico.Through her transformative experiences with the plants, Julie began to connect with the gifts she's here to share. Julie has incredible clarity around her purpose here on Earth - to guide others in connecting with their gifts - through coaching, WomanSpeak public speaking circles, Family Constellations and, of course, plant medicine.Connect with Julie:Website: juliekwood.comInstagram @julie.k.woodFacebook Julie K WoodConnect with Jen:email: Jennifer@beingREAL.meWebsite: www.beingREAL.meInstagram @beingREALjen Great people, places, or things we referenced during this episode:Films: For the Next 7 Generations available on Amazon and YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiGkKNG1p88Fantastic Fungi - documentary on NetflixResources: MAPS.org - Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. This was interesting info and food for thought:In 1994, Nixon's Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs and Watergate co-conspirator John Ehrlichman admitted to the real impetus for the War on Drugs, as quoted in Smoke and Mirrors: The War on Drugs and the Politics of Failure, in Harper's Magazine by Dan Baum, published in 2016:“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.” Join us next week and until then…keep communicating, connecting, and listening for REAL. It matters. If you believe conversations like these belong in the world, please subscribe, rate & review this podcast - and even better, share it with someone else as a REAL conversation starter.

After many late nights and lots and lots of writing, IMPACT Paid Media Specialists Jason Linde and Dan Baum finally saw their massive, comprehensive Google Ads guide for digital marketers go live. And, let me tell you, their Google Ads Guide is a thing of beauty... Here's the thing though. Creating a piece of content at this scale is hard enough, but doing so with a partner instead of flying solo is another matter entirely. So, I decided to invite Jason and Dan on the Content Lab this week to talk about what it takes not only to execute such an intensive content project successfully as individual contributors, but also what it takes to be successful as a team who has been tasked to do so together. We also talk about why sweaters from Old Navy follow me around online until I buy them, and whether or not Dan and Jason are familiar with the internet. Oh, and save the date, everybody... Jason and Dan will be doing a totally live AMA in IMPACT Elite about Google Ads on June 4 at 11 a.m., Eastern. So, if you're not a member already of IMPACT Elite, I highly recommend you join now. Enjoy!
In this episode we explore shared value opportunities in the insurance sector when Ramana James from IAG talks to Dan Baum from The Redwoods Group.

In this episode, Mark talks with New Orleans musician Paul Sanchez. Listen in as Paul talks about writing his first song at age six, growing up in a family of 11 children and playing street ball in the Irish Channel. Paul takes us on a journey through time and New Orleans, weaving stories throughout the discussion. Learn about the worst band name ever and how Paul made a music video with Steven Soderbergh! Paul released his first solo album, Jet Black and Jealous in 1992. In 2016 he released the sequel; Heart Renovations. Mark and Paul discuss the similarities and differences and why it took so long! In the years between, Paul was a founding member of the rock band Cowboy Mouth and an actor on the HBO Series Tremè. He was a writer, producer and performer in the musical adaptation of Dan Baum’s book Nine Lives, and a collaborator with the likes of John Bouttè, John Rankin, Alex McMurray and just about every musician in the Crescent City. By the end of the discussion, you'll be a fan of New Orleans’ best songwriter. If you already know and love Paul’s music, you’ll learn some of the history and the stories from a New Orleans original. The idea behind the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast is to bring you stories about the food, music, places, people and events that make New Orleans unique. Today's guest manages to cover all five of those things! In this episode, Mark sits down with Vance Vaucresson, president of Vaucresson Sausage Company. Vance's company is the last of the original food vendors at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival, continuing the tradition begun by his late father, but that only scratches the surface. Vance is also a family man, a performer with a beautiful voice, and a student and ambassador of his Louisiana Creole roots. Mark and Vance trace the Vaucresson family history from 19th century France to present-day New Orleans. Learn how Vance’s father opened the first black-owned Creole restaurant in the French Quarter and was instrumental in the beginnings of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The two also discuss present day festivals including the New Orleans Po-Boy Festival and BBQ and Blues, both coming up in October 2016. Learn about the musical adaptation of Dan Baum’s book "Nine Lives" and gain insight into the music culture of New Orleans. Along the way you’ll meet members of the Bouttè family as well as singer-songwriter and native son, Paul Sanchez. All this and more on episode #20 of Beyond Bourbon Street!
