320: Pioneer California Biodynamic Winemaking + 100 Adorable Sheep with Chris Benziger

Unreserved Wine Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 15, 2025 46:37

What was it like to move to biodynamic wine farming at a time when hardly anyone was doing it? What crucial role do 100 adorable sheep play at the Benziger winery? How do biodynamic preparations that might seem a bit “woo” actually benefit the vineyard? What are the benefits of biodynamic farming practices for vine health and wine quality? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Chris Benziger, winemaker with the Benziger family wines in Sonoma, California. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you will win one of three bottles of the superb Benziger wines. This is open to Canadian residents because shipping alcohol across borders is still bound-up with prehistoric laws. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights How did Chris' grandfather transform his alcohol-importing business during Prohibition? How did the Benziger Family Winery get started? What does Chris love about the Benziger family property, and what fascinating history does it have? How does the geology of the area influence Benziger wines? What challenges did the Benziger family face during their first harvest at the new winery? Why did the Benziger family transition to biodynamic farming practices years ahead of mainstream sustainability trends? What crucial role do Dorper sheep and Highland cattle play at the Benziger winery? How do biodynamic preparations that seem “woo” benefit the vineyard? What are the benefits of biodynamic farming practices for vine health and wine quality?   Key Takeaways The Benzigers were biodynamic pioneers in California. He quotes Gandhi: “First they ignored him, then they laughed at him, then they fought him, but then he won.” Today, in every single winery, particularly in Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Monterrey, and the counties that have very high prestige, every one of these wineries has some form of a sustainability program today. The Benziger family eventually realized that sheep were the answer to their challenges. They got a big flock of a special type of sheep called a Dorper. Their little cloven hoofs push debris down, like leaves, eliminating mildew pressure, so no mildecides. They eat the grasses underneath the vine, eliminating the need for herbicides like RoundUp. And they fertilize as they go which helps with microbial growth.  Chris says that even though it sounds odd to be putting cow dung in a horn and burying it in the ground, they're making a plant probiotic. That manure attracts microorganisms in the soil, and they're just small enough that they can fit through a cow horn. This is unbelievably healthy for the plants. In conventional farming, you water and feed the plant from the top. You're delivering everything at the surface so the roots stay at the surface. Biodynamics tells the vine, Hey, you've got to earn a living. We don't water or fertilize it. Now the roots do what they want to do, and go down into those different layers, find their own sources of moisture and nutrition, and that's how we get a better, more terroir-driven wine.   About Chris Benziger Chris Benziger was still in high school when he and his family moved from White Plains, New York, to California wine country. He went on to earn a degree in marketing from the University of San Francisco, while spending summers, weekends and every spare moment working at the winery as a child laborer. He officially, he officially joined the Benziger family winery in 1993 Chris oversees the home ranch and is dedicated to the thriving biodynamic ecosystem of the estate, shepherding the Benziger flock of sheep, tending to the estate vegetables and fruit trees, and producing biodynamic preparations for his vineyards.       To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/320.

I am Jared Frieze; and I am from a small town in southwest Missouri right outside Springfield. I grew up in the sheep industry and still have a huge passion for it to this day. Our sheep operation consists of Fullblood/Purebred  flock of Dorper and White Dorper. It is a family run operation between my parents, wife, daughter and myself which we operate under the name JBJ Livestock. We strive to produce very functional real  world Dorper sheep that can be competitive in both the showring and meet the needs of the commercial producer. My goal and primary objective for running for the board is to continue to push the Dorper industry forward by supporting all the different sectors of the Dorper sheep business, and marketing all the attributes this breed has to the sheep industry. I look forward to serving the members of the association and ask for your vote!

My name is Kerry Paul, and I am seeking election to the board for a second term.  Thank you, Darroll Grant, for your nomination. I, along with my wife Dawn, and our son, Kevin,  own and operate Missouri Dorpers in Albany, MO.  We have Dorpers and White Dorpers as well as Registered Red Angus cows.  We have owned Dorper Sheep for 14 years. Albany is where I grew up and we moved back after Kevin was born, about 29 years ago.  After graduating from the University of Missouri, I worked in the Farm Equipment, Pharmaceutical, and Seed industries.Besides serving on the ADSBS Board the last three years, I have served on boards for our local Church, School, University Extension, and Angus Associations.  Our flock contains about 240 head of fullblood ewes and we usually have 40 or more rams for sale at any time.  We lamb three seasons a year, getting three lamb crops per ewe every two years. Spending three years on the board, I have found it both fulfilling and challenging.  I am the Co-Chair of the Data and Research Committee.   Being reelected would allow me to see some projects through that we are working on. The Sire Project with Texas A&M is an opportunity for some valuable data that we can use in a production database.  NSIP has been cumbersome to utilize for Dorper breeders as it doesn't allow for more than one lamb crop a year, among other things, but it is pretty much all there is out there. Our next system for Breed Registration needs to be easy for breeders to input performance information into. This committee is also trying to acquire data that has already been collected that pushes forth the advantage of Dorper Sheep.  Many of the top sale barns in the country report sheep sales that are split out as Dorper/Dorper Cross, vs non-Dorper.  That data shows a clear advantage for Dorper Sheep and we need to get that kind of information compiled, published, and used in our marketing.  There are a couple of things that drive my thought process when faced with questions or decisions on the board.  First, is the subject good for the breed as a whole.  Second, will it help the breed maintain the breed standard.  I feel strongly about those two things and they guide my voting.  I would appreciate your vote for me on the board.Respectfully,Kerry Paul

Welcome to episode 10 of the MLA Productivity and Profitability media series. This episode features Anne Collins of AC Ag Consulting. Anne talks about how to maximise dorper reproductive performance, particularly in challenging environments. Your host, Tanisha Shields and Anne discuss how to utilise condition scoring as a management tool to inform decision making, the importance of pregnancy scanning and how to use the scanning results to improve flock reproductive performance. Shedding sheep breeds are a relatively easy-care, low labour input, enterprise option for producers, particularly mixed farmers who have multiple enterprises competing for their time.  The number of lambs weaned is the key profit driver for a shedding sheep enterprise.Anne talks about the results of a Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) project, including how the adoption of improved management practices in the annually joined flock including: monitoring of ewe condition score; pregnancy scanning; differential management of single and twin bearing ewes; culling scanned empty ewes; ram and ewe soundness checking prior to joining; and timely weaning, resulted in an increase in conception rate in the monitored group of ewes from 125% to 159%. The key take home messages for listeners from this episode are: 1.       Learn how to condition score your animals, actually do it and use the results to make management decisions.2.       Ensure both rams and ewes are fit to join prior to mating through the use of physical examinations and attention to nutrition3.       Pregnancy scan ewes and manage accordingly. When school started again the following year, he moved back to his parent's home where he would attend school in person.  Taking care of the rabbits became more of a challenge considering the travel required and the level of attention required.  As a result, the enterprise failed. Nate was not done, but he knew that he needed to try something different than rabbits.  Through a series of examples, contemplations and research Nate and his grandfather decided to have Nate try raising Dorper Sheep.  This is where Nate found his niche and his passion.  Today he is the owner of Cartwright Dorpers and is operating both a purebred and commercial sheep enterprise.

The Shepherdess At Harmony Farms is named Grace, and she has an unbelievable story.  Starting at the age of 11 she lived in the suburbs of Austin, Texas and was purchasing and re-marketing garage sale items online.  She developed an incredible talent for online marketing during her teen years to the point that she developed a 7 figure apparel company using the marketing skills she had developed.  Then, there was a drastic change. Grace was living with her parents at this time, and they decided that it was time to move to an area where they could purchase some land and get further away from encroaching urban sprawl.  This took the whole family to northeast Texas, where her folks bought 30 acres.  In an effort to keep their agricultural property tax exemption, they began raising sheep, and for the first two years, Grace wanted nothing to do with this.  However, in 202o that all changed. Once Grace embraced taking care of the livestock and farming, she fell in love with the lifestyle and work.  This led her to develop a passion for findng a way to stay on the farm.  She took the online marketing skills that she already had and started applying them to the families farming enterprise and "The Shepherdess At Harmony Farms" was born. Today Grace is selling premium Dorper Sheep, online courses, merchandise, sheep supplies and other SWAG.  She is fired up about telling young people how they will be able to get into farming and why that is a great choice.  And, she is putting outstanding content out on her blog and her YouTube Channel.  And, I am lucky enough to interview her today.

William PhippsI'm honored to be nominated for the Board of Directors. My wife, Robina, and I operate Centre Del Farm LLC with our children, Sydney and Liam. We currently run 60 head of Fullblood Dorper brood ewes/embryo recipients along the DE/PA line.I grew up on a dairy farm where we milked 60-70 Registered Holsteins. I graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in Dairy and Animal Science and was a member of their Dairy Judging Team. Shortly after graduation my father passed away and we sold most of our property in Delaware to pay the estate tax. Dismayed by our tax situation, I returned to school and earned a B.S. in Accounting. I spent a couple years in public accounting auditing not-for-profit organizations, pursued a master's degree in taxation, and eventually went to work in corporate America. Today I'm a CPA, the Director of Tax Compliance for a large investment company and serve on our board of directors for the local Farm Bureau. We started with Dorpers in 2013 as 4-H projects for our children. We wanted to give them some of the same experiences we had growing up. We could have bought them nice market lambs and won some shows; but we wanted the kids to learn something more. I wanted them to learn how to evaluate an animal and improve a flock. It's been an education for all of us and we have all learned so much on this journey. In short, we started our journey to better our children, but we fell in love with the breed along the way. I hope my business experience and passions for the breed will benefit the ADSBS members and I'd appreciate your support. If elected I will do my best to advocate for the breed and all our members. www.Dorpersheep. orgwww.Nationalagco.com

JR Howard Hello, my name is JR Howard and I am honored to be nominated for the Board of Directors for the ADSBS. I am located just outside Paris, Texas in the Northeast part of Texas. My background is in large scale logistics operations, and I serve as the Texas Fleet Manager for Ferguson Enterprises, the largest plumbing wholesale company in the US. My family (wife Kellye, boys Hunter, 10 and Carter, 7) also own and operate a large commercial sheep herd (Texas Solar Sheep) along with our registered Dorper herd Cuatro H Dorpers. I am the current President of the Texas Hill Country Dorper Association. I bought our first Dorper rams from Philip Glass in about 2003 to use with our commercial hair ewes. I was impressed with their hardiness, ability to have multiple lambs on an accelerated lambing interval, and the impressive carcass qualities. I truly believe those characteristics of the breed from almost 20 years ago are still what we should strive to produce today. Sheep that will survive, have multiple lambs, and bring top dollar when sold based on carcass quality. Adhering to the breed standards will keep us on track to consistently produce an animal that will have value into the future. If elected to the Board, I will make sure and try to keep the commercial producers needs at the forefront. The commercial producer is the base consumer for any sheep breed that intends to be successful at any scale. I will also make sure we have a focus on using all means possible to market and promote our breed and producers. I would appreciate your vote and am grateful for the opportunity to run. www.Dorpersheep. orgwww.Nationalagco.com

Leann WintersHello! My name is LeAnn Winters and I am honored to be nominated to serve on the ADSBS Board. My husband and I own and operate Twin Ridges near Kahoka, Missouri. We currently run roughly 350 registered and commercial Dorper ewes and 50 cow calf pairs. Our two children, Wyle,12, and Ally, 11, have a flock of white dorper ewes. I am currently a District Conservationist for the USDA-NRCS.My passion for raising sheep started when I was 8 years old. I was fascinated at tracing their genetics, recordkeeping, and rotational grazing and I still am to this day. I was active in 4-H, FFA, University Extension events, and Church. I attended collage at the University of Missouri and completed an undergraduate degree in Agricultural Education and a Masters in Agronomy with an emphasis in Grazing Management. Throughout my college education, I worked as a research specialist preforming grazing trails on perennial and annual forages and presenting at field days across the US and international. In 2006, I began my search for a breed of sheep that focused on production, carcass characteristics and growth. I was pleased to find the Dorper breed and added 4 ewes and a ram…and the rest is history! I have taken the Senior Course with Raymond Reed and have been honored to have Theuns Botha and Colene van der Merwe inspect our flock. I feel it's not only important to select by standards but also carcass merit and productivity. We are currently transitioning from an excel program to an EID tagging system with reader and software from Select SheepWare. We are also utilizing Flock 54 for genetic testing. I would like to promote this level of record keeping in the Dorper breed. My children enjoy being involved in 4-H and Junior events. I believe in developing strong youth programs and promote showing and education in our Junior Members and was recently added to the ADSBS Youth Committee. I appreciate the opportunity to run for the Board and if elected, look forward to working with my fellow Board Members and networking with you to promote the breeds! www.Dorpersheep. orgwww.Nationalagco.com

Sharon HolmanFor the past three years I have served on the ADSBS Board I have been motivated by the fact that ADSBS is in the enviable position to propel our breeds and branded Dorper Lamb product into the U.S market as an identifiable and quality protein. My term on the ADSBS Board of Directors started in January 2020, and everyone knows what happened next, COVID….and crisis management. I believe that the Board was successful in keeping the Society running, given all the unique challenges. I was chosen to lead the Board as President in 2021 and again in 2022. My greatest accomplishments during my leadership include: the development of the ADSBS Strategic Plan, modernizing the ADSBS committees, employing the first Executive Director, implementing a new financial structure, and updating ADSBS policies and procedures. I would be honored to serve another term on the ADSBS Board of Directors to continue to work for you and expand into what I believe is another avenue for Dorpers to excel: commercial sheep production. Why? Because with a robust commercial Dorper sheep industry we will enjoy a strong sustainable market for our registered Dorper and White Dorper seedstock. Range management and production agriculture are my passions and I believe that Dorpers fit into my business model and work for me. I am a fulltime rancher and in my own operation I use my Dorper and White Dorper sheep, Spanish goats, Angora goats, and occasionally a few cows to manage native forages. I spent 20 years raising Boer goats however, I chose to leave that industry because the goats were not adaptable to production on a commercial level. I would like to say that this has been an easy journey as we are fortunate to raise a breed of sheep so adaptable that they thrive across the U.S. in all types of production systems. However, we've had our challenges and I believe that we're better for it and have found more opportunity. I would be honored to continue to work for you and continue to move ADSBS progressively forward. www.Dorpersheep.orgwww.Nationalagco.com

Emily Vincent My name is Emily Vincent and my sheep business is known as Two Rock Ranch. I began with a smallflock of White Dorpers in 2009 in Petaluma, California. In 2013, my husband and I moved to upstate New York to be near his family. Until quite recently I was the only Registered White Dorper breeder in the Northeast. In 2021 I grew my flock from 300 to over 400 head with the acquisition of the Yucca Lily flock from Jean and Mike Sudderth. It was more of a passing of a legacy than a purchase and I am so honored that they entrusted the last, most precious of their Fullblood and Purebred bloodlines to me. I support breed preservation and improvement.I am a full-time White Dorper lamb meat producer. I believe that the Branded Dorper Meat label will be important to our breed in the future and it is a complicated process. We cannot make this cost-prohibitive to commercial farmers (like requiring registrations), but at the same time we need quality control measures so that the Dorper brand does not suffer. I ardently support a branded Dorper Lamb label and will do everything I can to help this endeavour. I support Dorper-specific advertising and marketing to reach other sheep breeders (especially commercial breeders). Ultrasounding loin eye, NSIP, and EBV's, and supporting parasite resistance studies through Texas A&M AgriLife Sheep and Goat Extension with the help of Jake Thorne would also be good for the Dorper breed. I support bringing the breed forward through scientific and industry advances. In my previous careers, I have worked 15 years in the business world through marketing and business management for Fortune 500 companies in Canada and the USA. I also served in both California and New York as a Registered Nurse in the Critical Care ICU.I have worked with a variety of people across a variety of platforms, beliefs, and political backgrounds and believe that diversity makes a team stronger! The Dorper Society is vital to my livelihood and the decisions made by the Board directly impact my job, my breed, and my future as a farmer as well as yours. Please reach out to me with any questions you might have! It takes every member on a team and I firmly believe that we all want to see this breed succeed!www. Dorpersheep.orgwww.Nationalagco.com

Meet Jon Hickford a Professor at Lincoln Uni and learn about gene testing in sheep and what benefits it can offer us as sheep breeders.  Smart Shepherding with Science How technology can help sheep breeders reduce and even almost eradicate devastating diseases in their flock.  In this article we talk with Jon Hickford, a Professor at Lincoln University in New Zealand, about gene testing to breed better animals that are naturally resistant and are more productive.  WHY ARE GENES SO IMPORTANT?  The basis of breeding is knowing that something has some degree of heritability says Jon Hickford. Jon is an acclaimed researcher and lecturer in Science and Agriculture with over 30 years of experience.  We know that highly heritable traits can be bred for easily and vice versa for low heritability traits.  We've now come to a better understand that that's all driven by the genes, by the DNA of an animal, or plant or human.  So Jon and his team at Lincoln University in New Zealand aim to understand how DNA affects the performance of livestock, and has a big impact on livestock productivity and performance. Jon and his team's research looks for those genes that underpin diseases or other characteristics that can severely diminish the performance of an animal or cause it some sort of health or welfare effect.  For some of the diseases of livestock it is a single gene defect.  A lot of the research has been done in Australia with Australian stud breeders, focusing on eradicating particular forms of genes that are really quite devastating to the sheep industry.   WHICH DISEASES ARE THESE? Microphthalmia in Australian and New Zealand Texel sheep - This was a real success story.  This disease was a problem for the Texel stud breeders about 15-20 years ago.  The condition causes blindness.  So the researchers developed a new gene test based on some science done in Germany that allowed breeders to identify their Microphthalmia carrying sheep. And they've been using that tool ever since. ‘We can never be absolutely sure of eradication, but there is an ongoing dialogue about not letting Microphthalmia ever show its head again in Australia and New Zealand' says Jon.  ‘There are still some Texel-cross genetics out there that make us suspicious', he suggests.  It is a risk using unregistered genetics and not tracking pedigree when you're dealing with a disease like this.  Dermatosparaxis a skin condition in White Dorpers – This disease impacts young lambs, their skin is like tissue paper and if you pick the lamp up the skin just rips.  It was rampant within New Zealand and Australia.   This disease is also seen in cows, dogs, humans and cats Jon advises.  ‘That gave us a good clue on the genetics.  We looked at the gene that was implicated, in all those other species, and it was faulty in sheep, and specifically in white Dorper sheep.  So we again, developed a gene test probably 10 years ago now and worked with the Australian and New Zealand Dorper breeders.  We put about five years in working with the Dorper Stud Sheep Association of Australia.  We probably worked with about 70 of the Dorper studs.  I'd like to be able to say we eradicated it, but I suspect it's still there too. There are people that don't follow good breeding practices or don't record and are not associated with the various breeding associations” says Jon.   Gaucher disease in Southdowns – This is a neurodegenerative disease, which is similar to Gaucher disease in humans.  Eventually the sheep fall over and die.  ‘We found what t

In this episode you're going to hear a first hand account of a farm accident. It's a jarring reminder of how so many tasks on a farm or ranch that seem routine, can be extremely dangerous. Doug Bichler is a rancher from Linton, North Dakota. He has agreed to share his story with us of a day in 2017 that changed his life forever. Doug is the 3rd generation on his family's ranch where he owns a seed stock operation, and raises registered Simmental Cattle and Dorper sheep. He also does custom feeding for others in the area: mainly backgrounding for feeders and replacement heifers. You'll also hear from Angie Johnson, who is the NDSU Extension Farm & Ranch Safety Coordinator, and Emily Leier, who is the Emmons County Extension Agent. They'll talk about impacts of farm accidents on local communities and the resources available for both prevention and support. “I actually even used to teach farm safety. I used to be an extension agent. I'm very aware of what to do and what not to do. I think there's a disconnect though, when you're in the tractor and you're doing it versus when you're in a classroom and you're teaching. It's really easy to say things, but it's a whole other thing to actually do them and practice them.” -Doug Bichler Doug has discovered that not only are there a lot of people with stories of close calls who can relate, but there is a whole community of people whose lives have been affected by firsthand experiences with farm accidents. As you can imagine, this whole experience has created a new set of challenges for Doug, but it hasn't changed his resolve to work on the ranch. His attitude and empathy for what others might be dealing with, is something we should all aspire to. “Your attitude is just such a key factor in overcoming whatever obstacle you're facing, whether it's an accident or something else. We all have things we deal with. People can just see what I'm dealing with, but sometimes we can't see what people are dealing with. So I think that's an important thing to remember.” -Doug Bichler This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Doug Bichler, a rancher from Linton, North Dakota Hear about the farm accident in 2017 that changed Doug's life and learn how he has used that experience to help others Learn about the far reaching effects of farm accidents in surrounding communities and operations Explore the resources provided by NDSU Extension to help make farming practices more safe Connect with Soil Sense Soil Sense Initiative Soil Sense Podcast is hosted by Tim Hammerich of the Future of Agriculture Podcast.

Who knew we could influence our lamb taste so much! Research for this podcast includes:Foods | Free Full-Text | Odd- and Branched-Chain Fatty Acids in Lamb Meat as Potential Indicators of Fattening Diet Characteristics (mdpi.com)What does lamb taste like? - Chef's Pencil (chefspencil.com)This episode was inspired by this great article written by Bill Williams. His original article is below:Six factors that influence the flavour of lamb before the chef starts work (which you will never know if you buy your lamb from a supermarket!) 1. The breed of the sheep. What are you actually eating? Merino, Corriedale, Border Leicester, Suffolk, Dorset, Ryeland, Southdown, Romney? I guess I must mention Dorper and Damara. LIke different grape varieties, sheep varieties produce different tasting and textured meat. I produce Wiltshire because that's the breed that yields the dining experience I personally like best. They may not be the fastest to reach a marketable weight, but the wait's worth it! Another example of slow food.2. The age of the sheep. When was the last time you saw "old ewe" or even mutton labelled at the supermarket? Not that mutton can't be delicious if prepared correctly, but seriously, if you go to a saleyard more than half the sheep sold usually aren't lambs or even hoggets. Where do they go? My theory is that most of them turn into "lamb" when they leave the abattoir.3. Diet. Are they feedlot finished? Or perhaps they've been raised on improved pasture made up of just one or 2 grass varieties in high rainfall or irrigated grazing areas where the native grasses have been wiped out by broad acre round up applications? In my experience lambs raised on a wide variety of native grasses and shrubs like saltbush taste much sweeter with a less fatty taste. Of course what they have been eating also effects how fat they are, too.4. Water. Water quality and availability are extremely important to sheep health. Consider the difference between sheep that have to walk a long way to a muddy dam compared to sheep grazed in close proximity to a flowing stream of fresh clean water. Good water access also enables sheep to browse and digest roughage more easily.5. Animal husbandry. Have the sheep been dogged? Consider the journey from the paddock to the abattoir.....especially for sheep sold through saleyards. Many supermarket lambs end up affected by adrenaline and fear. I don't like to road transport sheep in summer....it's just too hot most days.6.How long have the carcasses been dry aged before being cut up into kitchen ready cuts? If the carcass is given at least a few days to "set", the muscles relax and the meat matures. Dry aged lamb is much more tender and flavoursome than freshly butchered lamb. What do you think? We would greatly appreciate any comments about which factors you consider most important in determining lamb quality.

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart. On this latest episode, Ian chats with Lynn McKay of Ewetopia Farms. Lynn was born and raised a "city girl" until her acquisition of a small farm in Alberta in 2000 when she purchased her first Shetland sheep. Since then, she moved to London, Ontario where she became heavily involved in breeding and showing Shetland sheep. As the niche market for Shetlands became saturated, Lynn changed her focus from wool sheep to meat sheep and purchased her first Dorper sheep. She sold these as breeding stock and placed well in the show ring at major events such as Toronto's Royal Winter Agricultural Fair for several years. After another move and a divorce, the Dorpers had to be sold and she only kept a pet-flock of Shetland sheep. However, now Lynn is back in the sheep industry with Suffolk sheep. In 2006, Lynn partnered with Arnie Droogh and in 2010 they purchased their first Suffolks and together established Ewetopia Farms. https://www.youtube.com/c/EwetopiaFarms https://ewetopia.ca/ PEAVEY MART Peavey Mart stores are rooted in the communities we serve and we are ‘connected to the land' in the same way our customers are. Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO STRIKE ME THAT or TO STRIKE ME AS and TO STRIKE A BALANCEIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, it strikes me that. This is a phrase that I used yesterday a couple of times when I was talking about the emojis that I like to choose, I said, well, I just choose emojis that strike me as cool. When something strikes you when you describe something as striking you in English, it literally means something hitting you, a ball can strike me in the face, hopefully that doesn't happen. But when something strikes you in the way that I used it, it means that you notice it or you've decided that it's cool. So I pick the emojis based on ones that strike me as cool, ones that I notice are cool or ones that I just think are cool when I see them. So they strike me as being cool.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"✅If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to strike a balance. When you try to strike a balance, you're trying to create a solution to something. Usually you're trying to get two people to agree on something in a way where they're both happy but they don't both get exactly what they want. Sometimes there's three cookies and I have five children that want the cookies so in order to strike a balance, I cut the cookies in pieces and everyone gets a half and then I get a couple cookie halves too. But anyways, I'm not sure my math is correct but I think you understand what I mean when you strike a balance. If I wanted to strike a balance, I create a situation where everyone gets some of what they want, but not exactly what they wanted and hopefully everybody's happy. So to review when something strikes you, it can be something that physically hits you like if my, one of my kids kicked a ball at me it could strike me in their head but it can also be used to talk about something that you've noticed. It might strike you as a little bit funny that there are goats behind me, I'm not sure you can see them today. Is that a goat right there? It might be. I know some of you noticed them yesterday. And of course the phrase to strike a balance means to create a situation where everyone gets a little bit of what they want but not exactly what they wanted but hopefully everyone's happy.Hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This is a comment from Judit. And Judit says, thanks a lot, cameraman. My response was you're welcome. My camera moving skills are great when I want to show something but not so great when I want to put the camera back in the exact spot I took it from, this time it went quite smoothly. So in my last video, I actually moved the camera while I was doing the lesson and I thought that maybe I should do that more. Maybe I should actually move the camera a little bit more so you can see more of the things that are happening right around me. I think maybe I scared the goats, maybe not. By the way, some of you thought they might be sheep, they do look a little bit like a type of sheep called a Dorper sheep but they are actually Boer goats.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)
