I 100% believe that one should continue to exercise throughout the process of healing. Being AWARE of movement/exercise responses will set you up for success to know what to avoid temporarily [at the beginning] that seemed to have set off the pain/discomfort in the first place. As symptoms continue to become better —> then you start to be more & more active by tracking your response to returning to specific movements/exercises. __ 90-95% of most lower back "issues" are musculoskeletal (i.e. muscles/tendons/ligaments/bone) in nature. Therefore, immediate access to PT is key to prevent further worsening of symptoms experienced. Grandkids & Exercise - Fitness Friday, Sabrena Jo Fitness Friday, The Not Old Better Show Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #374. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. We talk about this a lot on The Not Old Better Show, and our audience knows well, that as we get older, we tend to spend less time in physical activity than when we were younger.  According to the Center for Disease Control, less than half of adults exercise enough to meet health guidelines, and even fewer older adults tend to do so (cdc.gov).  While getting older is a predictor of reduced physical activity, children today are also getting less physical activity than they did in previous generations, to the detriment of their health and physical development.  So, if you are a grandparent (or have friends with grandchildren), you might agree that kids today have less unstructured free play than you did during your own youth.  When I was a child, I spent time after school and on weekends riding my bike everywhere, fitness and Physical Education classes were more the norm, and I played with friends all manner of sports, like skiing, which I've talked about before a lot. From what I see, children today are spending more time in front of televisions, computers, and mobile devices.  Many governments around the world, like here in the US, have launched campaigns to increase the amount of time families spend in an activity.  Both Go4Life.gov and HealthFinder.gov are great websites where you can read about the issue and ways to address this growing health, fitness, and creating exercise habits. But, getting back to grandparents, the American Council on Exercise has new research on how to get kids and grandparents working together, exercising, and having fun all at the same time. Sabrena Jo, ACE Fitness Director of Science and Research Content is here today to talk about a few exercises you can do both on your own and with the younger generation.  Since getting older means that we spend less time in physical activity, and with kids moving around less as well, why not set a great example and have fun at the same time! They both work for the American Council on Exercise.  Rachel Eidel is the Certification Program Manager for ACE's Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor programs. She was born and raised in Colorado and now lives in San Diego with her husband and 2 young daughters. She's been with ACE on/off since 2010. Alex Link is the Certification Program Manager for ACE's Health Coach and Medical Exercise Specialist Programs. She's been with ACE for 7 years. In her free time she loves to volunteer and travel. In this Episode, I talk with world renowned fitness and nutrition consultant Jenni Rivett. In her career so far, she was Lady Diana’s personal trainer for 7 years, she’s been an author, fitness journalist, and creator of many DVD’s on fitness. Jenni was once voted Britain’s top fitness trainer by the ‘Best of British’ publications.During our conversation, we talk about Jenni growing up in South Africa where she attributes her passion for health and fitness to her Mother. Shortly after moving to the UK, Jenni had a stand out moment when she realised that office work wasn’t for her. She then decided to pursue a full time career in Exercise & Fitness. In the early 90s, Jenni was invited to be a fitness presenter all around the UK, which was another big break. She was studio coordinator in Bodies in Chelsea and started to work with high profile clients like Liz Hurley, Imran Kahn, and Fergie. We talk about how the opportunity to work with Lady Diana came and some of the experiences she had during this time, which Jenni describes as a great honour and privilege.
