Today we're sharing another insightful presentation from our most recent Innovative Executives League Summit, where Desiree Vargas Wrigley, Chief Innovation Officer of P33 Chicago and Executive Director of TechRise by P33, delivered a lesson in stakeholder-centric design. Desiree overviews the challenges Chicago's underrepresented tech founders face and the process of developing TechRise's initiatives. Highlighting the impact of TechRise and P33, Desiree presents a galvanizing picture of Chicago-based innovation that utilizes local money to generate a cycle of loyalty, growth, and investment that leans into Chicago's advantages. In this episode, Desiree asks: “Who succeeds when you succeed?” As an enthusiastic believer in Chicago's potential as an innovation hub, Desiree is also unafraid to point out its shortcomings, such as the lack of popularity in social ventures and lack of recycled capital. Demonstrating a stakeholder-centric design process with the case study of TechRise, Desiree shows how focusing on the key question of identifying all the stakeholders and all the solutions that benefit them drives success. She discusses sifting through bias for actual data and the extensive discovery process that went into developing the initiatives of TechRise. Desiree articulates how re-imagining pitch competitions (frequency, environment, etc.) has opened doors for founders by acknowledging the obstacles that women founders and founders of color often face. Desiree shares her interest in conscious capitalism and asks, “What else is possible?”(1:15) – P33 Chicago(3:42) – Thinking about success(4:53) – A foundation for providing support and resources(6:57) – Stakeholder-centric design in four steps(9:36) – Funding women and founders of color(12:49) – TechRise(15:20) – Identifying solutions(16:35) – Weekly pitching(19:12) – Looking at impact(21:16) – What else is possible?Desiree Vargas Wrigley is a serial entrepreneur with a track record of empowering women and people of color in the world of investing. Today we're going to discuss the pros and cons of staying with the same company for an extended period, creating an HR organization from scratch, and the lessons that Michelle Anastasi has learned throughout her career. ABOUT OUR GUEST Michelle is an outgoing CPO who has worked at CompSych, GiveForward, Dell and ASAP Software. She earned her Business Administration degree from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. KEY TAKEAWAYS [1:52] Michael introduces Michelle Anastasi and asks her to share an interesting tidbit about herself — She has had a bear visit her kitchen while she was home! [4:00] Michelle touches on the roles she embodied and the mentors that guided her during her 16-year stint at the same software company, from the accounting department to building an HR department from scratch. BUILDING HR FROM THE GROUND UP [6:18] Michelle breaks down how she went about tackling the HR department build with very little experience from establishing priority lists to finding the right mentors. REGRETS? [11:50] Michelle admits to having made her share of mistakes, but she wouldn't trade any of them — she does share the one thing she would have done differently: networks and relationships. STARTING FROM SCRATCH [12:36] Michelle packs so much advice in a minute, you won't believe it — we counted 11 really important and insightful tips. SHAKING ASSUMPTIONS [15:30] Behaviors can help in preventing people from pigeonholing you — think about your executive presence and be strategic. WHY SO LONG? [18:46] Michelle opens up on the reasons why she stayed so long at ASAP, the first of which is that she kept having opportunities to learn and be challenged. She touches on the increasingly short windows companies get to show how engaging they can be to new hires. THE DELL MERGER [22:21] She did work through a few mergers, but Dell was at a different scale! She talks us through the ups and downs of the experience. C-SUITE, CPO VS CHRO [25:38] Though there seems to be a push away from the human resources terminology, Michelle sees very little difference between the roles themselves. She delves into what best prepared her for the C-Suite, including a tough boss that knows how to push you outside your comfort zone. GETTING TO THE C-SUITE [30:04] Michelle hands out fistfuls of advice for aspiring CPOs. SURPRISES AND REWARDS [33:22] Michelle shares the aspects of being a CPO that she finds surprising and rewarding — even if a lot of the work is covered by NDA! OVERSEAS EXPERIENCE [33:50] Michelle's approach to HR is influenced by having lived overseas and being culturally aware. A BAD CALL [35:18] Michelle shares the time she joined a company led by a narcissist. MBA [36:56] Michelle touches on the value her MBA has had in her career. CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES [38:15] What are the things Michelle looks for in a successful candidate to hire. BEST WORST JOB MICHELLE EVER HAD [39:19] Waitressing is such a good background for everything in life! FINAL THOUGHTS AND GOOD READS [42:02] Michelle shares a very generous amount of titles to read and a recap of her tips for emerging CXOs. [44:20] Michael thanks Michelle for coming on the podcast to share her insight and closes out the podcast with his favorite takeaways. SPECIAL THANKS TO Jalan Crossland for the music Angela Johnson at OC Executive Search

Ethan Austin is a two-time founder, Angel Investor and currently the Managing Director of the Western Union accelerator powered by TechStars. Prior to joining TechStars, Ethan pioneered the medical crowdfunding space as a co-founder of GiveForward, the world's first medical crowdfunding platform. After going through the TechStars program himself in 2010, GiveForward raised $7 million in funding. The GiveForward platform went on to help families raise 200 million for their loved ones out of pocket medical expenses, and help change the way people care for each other during life's most difficult times. The company was acquired in 2017 and is now part of GoFundMe private acquisition. In this episode… Founders often want to know what investors want and how they determine which companies are viable to receive funding. With investors choosing less than 3% of the thousands of pitches they receive yearly, getting a yes is increasingly more difficult. Nonetheless, this week’s guest, Ethan Austin says for you to stand a chance you have to have a blend of the right idea and the perfect team. And if you don’t get the yes, what next? On this episode of What’s Your Ask?, you’ll hear from Ethan Austin, the Managing Director of the Western Union Accelerator Powered by TechStars about how you can get better at asking. He also talks about the things you should never do when asking, and how he makes his decision to say yes to an ask. If you are a payment or fintech startup, applications for the Western Union Accelerator, Powered by Techstars are now open until April 5. Click on the link below to learn more and apply.

[4:00] Michelle touches on the roles she embodied and the mentors that guided her during her 16-year stint at the same software company, from the accounting department to building an HR department from scratch. Mel sits down with friend Jessica Carmel to talk about her book The Hearts of a Girl: The Journey Through Congenital Heart Disease and Heart Transplant. Jessica talks about what it is like to be not only a heart transplant recipient at 16 and also a kidney transplant recipient 10 years later. She will use her education to help other people with Congenitive Heart Failure and spread awareness about the disease.
Mel sits down with author and heart and kidney transplant recipient Jessica Carmel. Carmel was one of the first people to use crowdfunding to help pay for her kidney transplant surgery back in 2009. Jessica talks about how she wouldn't be here without crowdfunding, (specifically Ethan Austin at Giveforward) how she had to convince the hospital that the money was going directly towards her hospital bills and her upcoming book The Hearts of a Girl which is available by preorder now! Medical bills are one of the leading contributors to bankruptcy, and even those with good insurance aren't immune to the financial stress these bills can create. First thing you gotta know is that Epi61 is the longest installment of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, that we've done to date. No particular reason for it. The interview with our Special Guest Graham Elwood comes in at about 30 minutes. But we've got a bunch of podcast clips to share, a Boozin' With Bill segment, the TweetSack section, our Burst O' Durst and a new song by musical geekmaster John Anealio. That, plus my usual rambling gum-flapping has us pushing the limits in terms of just how long someone can shovel Succotash into their earholes. Sue me - this stuff's free. I was delighted to talk at length with the aforementioned Graham Elwood. We had tried to link up when he was in San Francisco recently for a face-to-face sit-down but couldn't coordinate schedules. So we Skyped it and it came out fine. Graham's a comedian, an actor, a writer, a podcaster, and most recently, co-producer and organizer of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival (the 2nd annual is this October 4-6 in Santa Monica.) Along with his partner-in-crime Chris Mancini, Graham hosts the Comedy Film Nerds podcast and also co-authored the Comedy Film Nerds Guide to Movies. In addition, he is heard often on Doug Loves Movies, competing against the audience during Doug Benson's live shows on the road. We talk about how he got his comedy start, his podcast start, his podcast festival start...lots of starts. And, most important to our podcaster listeners, reveals what they have in store at this year's LA PodFest to let more of us get into the action of podcasting in relative comfort from the event. (And his latest CD, Palm Strike Dance Party, is available at http://Graham Elwood.com!) GET HIP It's not too late to help friend-of-Succotash Chris Bonno (interviewed in Epi43) as he's just gone through hip replacement surgery. Being as he' a comedian and a painter, he's got zip in terms of health insurance, so paying for his operation is going to be one giant mofo that Obama's health care program doesn't seem set to cover. You can find out how to kick a little money into the hip kitty through his website at http://ChrisBonno.com or else click on the link to get over to the GiveForward website where they're taking care of the funds as they come in. THE 10 MOST ACTIVE IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST I realized that what I read The 10 Most Active in the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List, veroften I don’t even know some of these shows I’m reading about. And they’re in the Top 100 of comedy podcasts – that’s out of literally THOUSANDS. So starting this week I’m going to pick one or two or a few to play clips from so we can all learn as we grow. Here’s the list of, again, the most ACTIVE shows on the list this past week. That means, regardless of their rank, they showed the most movement either up or down the chart. 47. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher -1059. The World of Phil Hendrie +2163. Sir Darryl Radio Experience +33973. Sex Squad +1779. Conversations with Matt Dwyer +25780. The Dana Gould Hour -1581. Yoshi Didn’t Podcast -1482. Wits +2784. Rollin’ With Dice & Wheels +11398. SModcast FeAB -17 BURST O' DURST FROM THE OL' BOOMERAGER HIMSELF We have our usual Burst O' Durst feature but I wanted to remind those Succotashians who live in the San Francisco Bay Area that Will Durst still has a couple of Tuesday nights (thru June 25th) left in the run of his one-man show, BoomeRaging: LSD to OMG, at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco. Hop over to http://WillDurst.com for showtimes and ticket information. SING YOUR SONG, NERDY MUSIC MAN Our friend John Anealio - from The Functional Nerds podcast with co-host Patrick Hester - has a new song out and we've got it featured in this episode. I'll Be Your Thor is a love song from a nerd to his even nerdier lady for whom only one hero can save the day. Once you hear it on Succotash and you love it, you can download it for FREE over at http://JohnAnealio.com. STRAIGHT FROM THE BOTTLE Our Boozin' With Bill is a little different than our usual visit with Succotash's booth announcer cum bartender. He's unearthed an ancient bottle of creme de menthe and he's determined to see if it's still viable for getting a heat on. THE CLIPS The Sir Darryl Radio ExperienceI’m not sure what this show is all about – or why it shot up 339 places on the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcasts this week. I listened to part of a recent episode where Sir Darryl, who bills himself on the homesite for the show as “The Most Articulate Negro in America”, starts drinking wine and apparently starts to get loopy within just a couple of minutes. Conversations with Matt DwyerComedian, actor and writer Matt Dwyer’s podcast is into its 50s, episode wise, and this week his show's Stitcher numbers leaped up 257 places this week! We feature a slice from his recent interview with Duncan Trussell, who is also a comedian and the host of the Duncan Trussell Family Hour. Rollin’ With Dice and WheelsDice is back. Celebrity Apprentice wasn’t enough and now Andrew “Dice” Clay and his longtime opening act Michael “Wheels” Parise have their own podcast. They’re only into their Epi8 and doing phenomenal numbers – up 113 places this week to make it into the Top 100 on Stitcher. In this recent episode we're clipping, comic Tom Green is co-hosting in place of Wheels. Pop My CultureWe haven’t looked in on Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland of the Pop My Culture podcast for awhile. They’re going great guns, after taking a little time away from the mikes, and just dropped their 116th episode, which features guest Dana Gould. Comic, actor, writer, he’s also the host of podcasting’s The Dana Gould Hour. (I’m also featuring this episode for my review in This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider.com!) The Paul Mecurio ShowThe Sideshow Network has a massive pile of steaming comedy podcasts, with some really great shows like PodCRASH with THAT Chris Gore, Overview with our pal Rick Overton, and Story Worthy with Christine Blackburn & Hannes Phinney. It’s also home to The Paul Mecurio Show. I’ve clipped Paul here before but it’s been a while. Paul’s guest this week was Jay Leno. I don’t think I’ve heard of Jay being on any podcast before – is that possible? Anyway, Paul got him – they have a bit of a history together – Jay bought the very first joke Paul sold before, which gave him the inspiration to give up his law practice to become a comedian. The Bitter Sound PodcastAlthough I’ve played a few bits and pieces and show ID’s from Davian Dent over at The Bitter Sound podcast, I think I’ve yet to feature a bona fide clip…until now. He’s also a co-host of the Strange Times podcast along with Kat Sorens from the Rigid Fist podcast and Bonn from The Bonn & Obo show. But he’s off in his own thing here, with music, sounds and a great set of pipes to boot. The Geek GenerationRob Logan over at the Geek Generation podcast did what every red-blooded internationally-heard comedy podcaster should do – he sent in a clip! It’s easy to do: Just send along a 3-5 minute MP3 clip of your show to marc@SuccotashShow.com. If you want to include a little written descriptor of what the clip’s about, even better. Like Rob did – here’s what he says: "Rob Logan and Mike Volpe get inspired by the upcoming Fall TV schedule and pitch some show ideas of their own." Whew! That's a lot of show! Hope you enjoy it - don't be shy about letting folks know about it, either! Go on up to iTunes and give us a rating and a little review. And you can give us a thumbs up at Stitcher.com and leave a comment. Or visit our Facebook page and leave us a comment there. Then there's always Stitcher. See you in the next episode but, in the meantime, don't forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

When Renee wanted to raise funds, she was disappointed that you could only raise money for non profits and not for individuals. She and her friend Ethan who had raised money for a major non-profit in a marathon, thought there should be an easier way for marathon runners to raise money for any charity—not just the registered partners. Ethan talks about how he and Renee founded Give Forward, a unique website that supports friends and family in their time of need.
