In this lively episode of GeekFreaks Podcast, Frank and the gang dig deep into the latest pop culture chatter. We cover the lively debate over which fictional characters would thrive on social media, break down the intense new trailer for One Piece season two, and share candid thoughts on the Highlander reboot casting news. Squeaks and Jonathan pitch their dream remakes and sequels, from Short Circuit to Back to the Future. We also talk about DC's rumored “henchman” movie—and pitch our own cheeky DC headlines. Lastly, the crew celebrates the return of space opera epics and welcomes Distance Nerd's Jen, Liam, and Graveyard for a spirited interview on fandom culture. Timestamps & Topics 00:00:00 – 00:03:00 – Introduction and “Fictional Characters on Social Media” debate: Star‑Lord, Joker, Riddler, and Flash. 00:03:00 – 00:06:00 – One Piece season two trailer reaction: multiple arcs, what to expect from Reverse Mountain and Alabasta, and Chopper's introduction. 00:06:00 – 00:08:00 – Does anime need to stick to the manga? Filler episodes versus character moments. 00:08:00 – 00:11:30 – News: Dave Bautista cast in the Highlander reboot—why the debate around his physique doesn't matter. 00:11:30 – 00:15:00 – What remakes do we actually want? Ideas range from Short Circuit's AI twist to a refreshed Back to the Future. 00:15:00 – 00:20:00 – Squeaks' ultimate pitch: E.T. returns—and he's connected to the Star Wars Senate cameo? 00:20:00 – 00:27:00 – DC rumors: Zach Cregger's “Henchman” script, who could carry a story about the accidental capture of Batman, and why Elseworlds stories are fun. 00:27:00 – 00:38:00 – Main Discussion: The renaissance of space operas. From Dune and Avatar to upcoming Star Wars projects and the importance of spectacle, practical effects vs. CGI, and why grand storytelling is back. 00:38:00 – 00:49:00 – “Geek Culture and Community” interview with Distance Nerd's Jen, Graveyard, and Liam: building an online fan community, favorite sci‑fi properties, and how their live podcast style resonates with listeners. 00:49:00 – 01:09:00 – More pop culture news and games: Marvel's Green Lantern theory, fake DC news challenge, and the crew's comedic speculations on Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Ryan Reynolds' ultimate crossover. 01:09:00 – end – Wrap‑up: Episode highlights, network updates, content from other podcasts, and personal recommendations—how King of the Hill's return hits the right notes, why Dope Thief on Apple TV is a sleeper hit, and more. Key Takeaways Fictional characters on TikTok? The gang imagines Star‑Lord taking selfies across galaxies, the Riddler fostering a cult following, and Flash zipping around doing livestreams from inside STAR Labs. One Piece season two will be jam‑packed. Squeaks notes the show will likely fold multiple arcs into one season, meaning nonstop action and beloved characters like Chopper and Nico Robin. Remakes done right: While the crew is wary of endless reboots, they'd love to see Short Circuit reimagined with modern AI themes or a thoughtful sequel to E.T. set in today's world. DC's “henchman” movie intrigues. Zach Cregger's script idea follows a low‑level villain who accidentally knocks out Batman and then wrestles with what to do—worth exploring as an Elseworlds story, especially if it digs into Gotham's underclass. Space operas are back. Thanks to Dune, Avatar, and upcoming Star Wars films, the spectacle‑heavy genre is enjoying a resurgence. The team loves the blend of practical effects and CGI when done well, but they emphasize the need for strong characters and meaningful themes. Geek culture lives online. Jen, Liam, and Graveyard from Distance Nerd share how they've cultivated a welcoming space for fans and why live, improvisational podcasting keeps the energy high. Fun with fake news. The hosts plan to prank DC fans with tongue‑in‑cheek rumors—like Batman stealing Green Lantern's ring or Mr. Freeze battling Clayface—just to poke fun at internet speculation. Personal recs: King of the Hill's revival hits all the right notes, Dope Thief on Apple TV delivers gripping crime drama, and Apple TV quietly produces award‑worthy content. Memorable Quotes “Thriving on social media doesn't mean everybody loves you—it just means you have a huge following.” – Frank “Star‑Lord with different aliens, different species, fighting and selfies in strange worlds? Yes, please!” – Squeaks “Sometimes the monsters show us what it means to be human.” – Frank on beloved AI and sci‑fi themes “Practical effects still matter; CGI needs to be done beautifully—think Dune's sandworms or Avatar's Pandora.” – Squeaks “We're casual, we're opinionated, and we're fans of fans. That's what Distance Nerd stands for.” – Jen Call to Action Love what you hear? Help us continue bringing you thoughtful geek discussions every week! Writer, Professor, and Futurist Mark Sable joins Jimmy on the podcast to talk about BOXED. BOXED is a grounded sci-fi thriller about a rogue A.I. The story was created by Mark and artist Jeremy Haun and originally published by Comixology Originals. Mad Cave Studios will be publishing the print edition with new bonus content on September 9th. Mark talks about the real life circumstances that led to his comic Unthinkable, his work as a futurist, his influences for writing BOXED, what fascinates/worries him most about A.I., plus some talk about D&D and Chaotic Neutral. BOXED From the Publisher: Since the first superintelligent A.I. went rogue and massacred the world's top computer scientists, it has been government agent Frank Savage's job to contain—or “box”—sentient artificial intelligence before they can become a threat to humanity. When Hippocrates, the Center for Disease Control's A.I., exceeds its programming and locks down hundreds of thousands of people, Frank is forced to turn to Pandora— an A.I. he onced boxed—to contain it. The problem? Pandora is a “honeypot” A.I. designed to seduce and destroy its targets… and Frank's ex-girlfriend. With the fate of humanity on the line, can Frank trust Pandora, or will their shared past threaten the entire mission? Boxed is a grounded Blade Runner-meets-Silence of the Lambs sci-fi thriller by Mark Sable (Miskatonic, Graveyard of Empires) and Jeremy Haun (The Beauty, The Realm). Brought to you in print for the first time by Mad Cave Studios, with brand-new bonus content! Originally released digitally by Comixology Originals. But not everyone's spiritual journey is identical. Some disciples are unexpected, and so is their story. Here are two disciples of Jesus who've been in the background and now step forward to care for the body of Christ after His death. Let's allow their story to inspire us.

This time, Inspector Maigret is in Brittany but it's not just the medieval old town that's walled in Concarneau - the people have also built up ramparts around their secrets. In order to discover the truth behind a spate of violent crimes and a mysterious canine, Maigret must first break down the fortifications of bourgeois betrayal and public paranoia. Inside of this bag you can find us feeling the magic, repeatedly getting lost in the forest, spriting a tree differently, receiving PSP-exclusive Nash backstory, dreaming bloody murder, parting bushes like the red sea, debating the existence of god with children, learning of the nomadic lifestyle, spreading disease, stacking up powerful rugs, violating gift customs, passing out, deleting a joke about Kyle's massive penis, worshipping goat satan, and spreading black power to every corner of the world. Rest well, my ignorant knight. 00:00:00 Chili Powder Fun Dip 00:02:13 Intro 00:03:32 Illusion Forest 00:08:56 Illusion Forest - Night 00:12:53 Illusion Forest - Morning 00:17:49 Pao 00:26:52 Pao Buildings 00:33:15 Tempest 00:40:56 Pao Post Plague 00:44:50 Black Dragon Cave 00:54:53 Real Net 00:57:38 Outro Patreon: patreon.com/retroam Bluesky: @retrogradeamnesia.bsky.social YouTube: www.youtube.com/@RetrogradeAmnesia E-Mail: podcast@retrogradeamnesia.com Website: www.retrogradeamnesia.com
Ever wondered what separates a cemetery from a graveyard, or a churchyard from a necropolis?
BEFORE ANNAPOLIS: 1/4: Sailing the Graveyard Sea: The Deathly Voyage of the Somers, the U.S. Navy's Only Mutiny, and the Trial That Gripped the Nation by Richard Snow (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Sailing-Graveyard-Sea-Deathly-Gripped/dp/1982185449 On December 16, 1842, the US brig-of-war Somers dropped anchor in the New York Harbor at the end of a voyage intended to teach a group of adolescents the rudiments of naval life. But this routine exercise ended in catastrophe. Commander Alexander Slidell Mackenzie came ashore claiming he had prevented a mutiny that would have left him and his officers dead. Some of the thwarted mutineers were being held under guard, but three had already been hanged at sea: Boatswain's Mate Samuel Cromwell, Seaman Elisha Small, and Acting Midshipman Philip Spencer, whose father was the secretary of war, John Spencer. 1841

Off the coast of North Carolina lies one of the world's most treacherous stretches of sea — a place where shifting shoals, sudden storms and centuries of shipwrecks have earned it the name “Graveyard of the Atlantic.”In July 2025, The Charlotte Ledger ran a series with that same name — researched and written by journalist Mark Washburn — that explores the region's lore through wartime sinkings, devastating hurricanes, pirate legends, lost treasure and enduring nautical mysteries.Washburn recently spoke in front of an audience at The Sharon at SouthPark retirement community about his research process and what he learned along the way. He was interviewed by Ledger assistant editor Lindsey Banks, and we recorded the conversation for anyone who wants to listen and dive deeper into the series. On this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, Washburn discusses the inspiration behind the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” series, how he approached the research and the surprising discoveries he made along the way.To read the full series, visit TheCharlotteLedger.com and subscribe today. This episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast was produced by Lindsey Banks. All aboard for a graveyard shift on the Northern Pacific: a volunteer at a Midwestern railroad museum discovers that locking up for the night is the easy part—explaining who's still working after hours is harder. In the echoing brick depot, a disembodied voice calls his name twice, mimicking his fiancée with unnerving precision. Outside, a figure in old‐fashioned bib overalls strolls the yard, climbs a passenger coach, and then simply disappears, leaving tracks only in the witness's memory. The smashing of headstones by vandals at an Auckand chapel have been described as "senseless, stupid and unecessary". Police are investigating the damage at St Stephens Chapel, after receiving a report on Monday evening. Marble headstones have been broken into pieces, while sandstone graves were literally smashed to smithereens. The local community has been left shocked by the damage, which looks like it will cost roughly 35-thousand dollars to repair. Finn Blackwell and Marika Khabazi report.
Correspondent Bill Whitaker ventures out to one of the most dangerous inlets in America, nicknamed the Graveyard of the Pacific, at the mouth of the Columbia River. The mission? Document the training of elite members of the U.S. Coast Guard determined to graduate from the National Motor Lifeboat School and earn the coveted title of certified Surfmen. Whitaker speaks with some of the best water rescue professionals in the country as they push their limits, tackling the roughest waters and toughest test, to hear firsthand what it takes to operate in huge breaking surf in order to save lives. Located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay and only accessible by boat, Smith Island, Md., is a place where time stands still, and its residents speak a unique dialect. Rising sea levels and erosion are changing the landscape and placing residents at risk of becoming some of the country's first climate refugees. Correspondent Jon Wertheim meets these locals to hear how climate change threatens their way of life – and the island itself – and how their perseverance and pride are inspiring a new generation of islanders. Something unusual is going on in Major League Baseball stadiums across the country this season, and it isn't traditional baseball. Correspondent Lesley Stahl reports from Savannah, Ga., on the dancing, back-flipping, lip-syncing almost-baseball team, the Savannah Bananas. They've created a new twist on the sport, which they call Banana Ball. Among its rules: a two-hour time limit; no bunting, walks or mound visits; and if a fan catches a foul ball, it's an out. Stahl meets Banana Ball's unorthodox, yellow-clad founder, Jesse Cole, and discovers the electric, circus-meets-sporting-event atmosphere that is selling out ballparks. Last week, in Part 1 of David Shier's story, you heard about his sudden and unexplained disappearance from Trinidad, Colorado, on February 11, 2022. Dave's wife recalled that he asked her to drive him somewhere because a person had called about a property. She didn't know more than that, but Dave was frustrated with her because she already had plans to run errands for one of their daughters. She last saw him around 11 AM, and when she returned later that afternoon, Dave was missing. When Dave didn't return and no one had heard from him, his family reported him missing. Given his age and the unusual circumstances, law enforcement took the case seriously and launched immediate search efforts. A snowstorm that night forced them to pause, but searches resumed the following morning and continued for months, even years.Clues began to surface: the unusual positioning of Dave's truck, and a report of a white vehicle spotted near the home. Then came a crucial discovery, a neighbor's trail camera footage, which law enforcement initially overlooked due to technical limitations. The neighbor eventually found an image of Dave walking away from the property around noon on the day he vanished. That footage is the last known sighting of him.Despite extensive efforts, no trace of Dave was found, and the case went cold. Then, more than a year later, there was a strange twist in the case when the local coroner came under fire after the body of a man was exhumed, a man who had been considered a missing person for several years, and they found two bodies inside the grave where there was only supposed to be one. Suddenly, David Shier's case was back in the spotlight, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation launched a broader inquiry into potential misconduct in Las Animas County. In this episode, we follow the strange and disturbing developments that brought new attention to Dave's case, and explore the question: could he be the second person buried in that grave? If you have any information regarding the disappearance of David Shier, please contact the Las Animas County Sheriff's Office at 719-846-2211.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
