#449 Italian Harlem: New York's Forgotten Little Italy

One of America's first great Italian neighborhoods was once in East Harlem, once filled with more southern Italians than Sicily itself, a neighborhood almost entirely gone today except for a couple restaurants, a church and a long-standing religious festival. This is, of course, not New York's' famous "Little Italy," the festive tourist area in lower Manhattan built from another 19th-century Italian neighborhood on Mulberry Street. The bustling street life of old Italian Harlem exists mostly in memory now.If you wander around any modern American neighborhood with a strong Italian presence, you'll find yourself around people who can trace their lineage back through the streets of Italian Harlem. Perhaps that includes yourself. But it's not all warm nostalgia and fond recollections. Life could be quite hard in Italian Harlem, thanks to the nearby industrial environment, the deteriorating living conditions and the street crime, the early years of New York organized crime. So who were these first Italian settlers who left their homes for what would become a hard urban life in upper Manhattan? What drew them to the city? What traditions did they bring? And in the end, what did they leave behind, when so many moved out to the four corners of the United States?Visit the Bowery Boys website for more adventures into New York City historyThis show was produced by Kieran Gannon.Join us on Patreon for extra podcasts and lots of other goodiesShare your love of the city's history with a Bowery Boys Walks gift certificate! There is perhaps no artist in Hip-Hop's Underground scene more highly touted and revered than Felipe Coronel, better known by the stage name Immortal Technique. As one of the most prolific, self-made independent artists, for the past twenty-plus years Immortal Technique has explicitly used his music as a vehicle for politics. It goes without saying most of Technique's music focuses on issues pertaining to U.S. and global politics. His views expressed in his lyrics largely share commentary on issues such as class struggle, socialism, poverty, religion, government, imperialism, and institutional racism. Over the years the Peruvian-born, Harlem-raised activist and rapper has a released string of three critically acclaimed studio albums and a mixtape which have garnered him a reputation for incorporating complex lyricism, unfeigned humanitarianism, and highly intellectual historical analysis within his music. Likewise, Immortal Technique not only talks the talk but backs his lyrics with concrete action. Immortal Technique's humanitarianism has reached far and wide – from mentoring youth in prison to building an orphanage in Afghanistan funded by his third album, The 3rd World, to helping to rebuild Haiti after 2010's devastating earthquake and delivering life-saving supplies for migrants traveling in the treacherous deserts of the U.S.-Mexico border, Technique's life's work both inside and outside of the recording booth have truly been with the people. Likewise, during the height of the pandemic in 2020, he started his own charity, The Rebel Army Runs to take care of the elders in his community of Harlem NY, and many others around the U.S.  In today's episode, Immortal Technique joins Step Off! Radio to discuss Joe Biden and Democrat's Democrats' hard-right turn on immigration, the ongoing genocide in Gaza, student solidarity encampments that have cropped up in universities throughout the country, and the creeping rise of far-right authoritarianism and fascism in the United States. So with that said, we are proud to present to you our conversation with Immortal Technique.

American artist Charles Gaines' body of work engages formulas and systems that interrogate relationships between the objective and the subjective realms. In his drawings, works on paper and photographs he investigates how rule-based processes and systems construct the experiences of aesthetics, politics, and language. By employing multi-layered practices, including images, texts, and grids, as well as working in a serial character, Gaines examines image structures while critically questioning forms of representation.   He recently retired from the CalArts School of Art, where he was on faculty for over 30 years and established a fellowship to provide critical scholarship support for Black students in the M.F.A. program. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States and around the world, most notably at Dia:Beacon, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Studio Museum, Harlem NY, and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles CA. His work has also been presented at the 1975 Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale in 2007 and 2015. In addition to his artistic practice, Gaines has published several essays on contemporary art, including Theater of Refusal: Black Art and Mainstream Criticism (University of California, Irvine, 1993) and The New Cosmopolitanism (California State University, Fullerton, 2008). In 2019, Gaines received the 60th Edward MacDowell Medal. He was inducted into the National Academy of Design's 2020 class of National Academicians and the American Academy of Arts and Letters in May 2022. In 2023, he received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Happy World Menopause Month! This year, the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause has been deepening our intergenerational narrative shift work by co-creating peer learning exchanges to normalize the menopause experience of Black people in the UK, New York, Toronto, and Puerto Rico. We are also co-hosting intergenerational menopause storytelling events called "Orisii" ( "pairs" in Yoruba). The peer learning and the Orisii dinner are being offered in partnership with community-based women-led organizations. We identified each of these locations because of their strong Black diasporic communities. We have local partners on the ground, or we are seeking to connect with more partners on the ground. In addition to the events we co-host, BGG2SM is documenting our learning during our travels, introducing how each partnering organization works to normalize menopause for Black and Queer communities and sharing stories from participants about their experiences with their bodies, identities, and relationships. So.... our podcasts in Season 5 will sound a little different. Think if "This American Life" was centering on Black intergenerational menopausal stories.... LET'S GO! This summer, the BGG2SM team traveled to Harlem, New York, and was blessed to partner with long-time friend and sister of the heart, Ebony Noelle Golden, Founder and CEO of Betty's Daugther Arts Collaborative. Ebony is a performance artist, scholar, and culture strategist whose work consists of site-specific performance rituals and live art installations that explore relationships between creativity and liberation. For the last decade, she has collaboratively created site-specific public art performances grounded in authentic community storytelling. Each time, she has felt that those folks who joined herself and her collaborators on their creative journey had been enveloped into the project itself—no longer audience members, but co-conspirators or co-performers. We had a great time hosting three amazing gatherings for people Global Majority who are living and thriving in New York. These included the Menopausal Multiverse Cocktail Hour, Peer Learning Dinner, and Orisii Intergenerational Dinner using the Say More deck. We were also honored to interview singer, composer, creative, performer, and our Beloved, YahZarah, and her mother Beverly about their memories of their first menstrual cycle, bodily autonomy, agency, and sovereignty. Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.167 features Ayana V. Jackson, (b. 1977 in East Orange, New Jersey; lives and works between Brooklyn, NY and Johannesburg, South Africa) she uses archival impulses to assess the impact of the colonial gaze on the history of photography.  By using her  lens  to deconstruct 19th and early 20th century portraiture, Jackson questions photography's authenticity and role in perpetuating socially relevant and stratified identities. Jackson's practice maps the ethical considerations and relationships between the photographer, subject, and viewer, in turn exploring themes around race, gender and reproduction. Her work examines myths of the Black diaspora and re-stages colonial archival images as a  means  to liberate the Black body.  The various titles of her series nod to the stories she is reimagining. Jackson often casts herself in the role of historical figures to guide their narrative and directly access the impact of photography and its relationship to the human body. Jackson's work is collected by major local and international institutions including The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, New York), The Newark Museum (Newark, New Jersey), J. P. Morgan Chase Art Collection (New York, New York), Princeton University Art Museum (Princeton, New Jersey), The National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia), The Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, Illinois) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (Seattle, Washington). Jackson was a 2014 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow for Photography and the recipient of the 2018 Smithsonian Fellowship. In 2022, Jackson founded Still Art, an artist residency program focused on emerging Southern African contemporary artists of all disciplines in Johannesburg. Ep.161 features Charles Gaines. A pivotal figure in the field of Conceptual Art, Charles Gaines' body of work engages formulas and systems that interrogate relationships between the objective and the subjective realms. Using a generative approach to create series of works in a variety of mediums, he has built a bridge between the early conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s and subsequent generations of artists pushing the limits of conceptualism today. Born in 1944 in Charleston, South Carolina, Gaines began his career as a painter, earning his MFA from the School of Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1967. In the 1970s, Gaines' art shifted dramatically in response to what he would later call ‘the awakening.' Gaines' epiphany materialized in a series called Regression (1973 – 1974), in which he explored the use of mathematical and numeric systems to create soft, numbered marks in ink on a grid, with each drawing built upon the calculations of the last. This methodical approach would carry the artist into the subsequent decades of his artistic journey. Working both within the system and against it, Gaines points to the tensions between the empirical objective and the viewers' subjective response. The concept of identity politics has played a central role within Gaines' oeuvre, and the radical approach he employs addresses issues of race in ways that transcend the limits of representation. His recent work continues to use this system with sociopolitical motivations at the forefront. ‘Faces 1: Identity Politics' (2018) is a triptych of colorful portraits of historical icons and thinkers, from Aristotle to Maria W. Stewart and bell hooks. Gaines reduces the images to pixelated outlines, layered among the faces of the preceding portraits to create a palimpsest of faces, employing this system in a critique of representation and the attachment of meaning to images. Gaines lives and works in Los Angeles. He recently retired from the CalArts School of Art, where he was on faculty for over 30 years and established a fellowship to provide critical scholarship support for Black students in the M.F.A. program. A survey exhibition of his work will be on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami in the fall of 2023. His work has also been the subject of numerous other exhibitions in the United States and around the world, most notably at Dia:Beacon, San Francisco Museum of Art, The Studio Museum, Harlem NY, and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles CA. His work has also been presented at the 1975 Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale in 2007 and 2015. In 2022, Gaines produced a new public art project with Creative Time, entitled ‘Moving Chains,' on Governors Island, New York, along with a music performance and a sculptural installation in Times Square. In addition to his artistic practice, Gaines has published several essays on contemporary art, including ‘Theater of Refusal: Black Art and Mainstream Criticism' (University of California, Irvine, 1993) and ‘The New Cosmopolitanism' (California State University, Fullerton, 2008). In 2019, Gaines received the 60th Edward MacDowell Medal. Day 9 The Address: Edgecombe Avenue, Harlem, NY The Story: There should be a sign as you drive up Edgecombe Avenue in Harlem that reads, “Black excellence started here.” A place of royalty. The home of Black Kings and Queens. Known as “Harlem's House of Celebrities,” residents of Edgecombe Avenue in Harlem's Sugar Hill neighborhood included W.E.B DuBois, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, poet James Weldon Johnson, boxer Joe Louis, and musicians, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Lena Horne, just to name a few. Their apartments were a place of aspirations. A place of respite in a world that was hostile to Black folks who were audacious enough to expect more from life than struggle and sacrifice. Their community was a place where an artist's dreams could come to life and where a revolutionary could come to incubate ideas. Edgecombe Avenue housed the hopes of so many Black people who changed the world that it should be an essential stop on anyone's visit to NY. Today we take you there, into the homes and into the stories of this special place.

In the early 1990s, the Lord began to open doors for a new kind of relationship between Christ's Center Church and a church called Bethel Gospel Assembly in Harlem, NY. It all started as an act of obedience when Jon led their High School ministry team to New York City to do street evangelism in Harlem, which at the time was one of The City's roughest neighborhoods. While out doing ministry on the streets, Jon heard the Lord direct them off the main street to a local public grade school. After boldly walking in off the street as complete strangers, and asking if they could perform their Gospel-based drama "Zion" for the entire school, they saw amazing things happen that none of them could have planned simply by obeying God's voice.
