Film lovers - not just here but around the world - were shocked and saddened by the news of the death of Bill Gosden yesterday. Bill was the long-time director of the New Zealand International Film Festival, which may or may not have been the biggest of its kind, but in many people's opinion was certainly one of the best. Under Bill's impeccable leadership it was the Festival of Festivals, gathering the best films from every other festival in the world. Bill always handed the credit for the Festival to his tireless and loyal workers. But the secret of its success was Bill himself - his taste, his tireless energy, his peerless schmoozing skills and his amazing knack of being able to sum up every film in one or two pithy sentences. Every year on this show Bill and Simon Morris would attempt to cover a hundred films in half an hour. Simon would throw a title at Bill, he'd talk about it - no notes, no hesitation, whether it was an obscure Slovenian art-film, or a revived Hollywood classic. To remember Bill Gosden, Simon talks with two people who knew him better than most - film-maker and long-time friend of Bill's Dame Gaylene Preston... and the man who Bill brought in from the cold - curator of the Incredibly Strange section of the Festival, film-maker Ant Timpson.

The week on The First Run, Chris and Matt discuss Elijah Wood's latest offbeat picture, ‘Come To Daddy'. As a man with severe daddy issues (I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT! – Chris), ‘Come To Daddy' sounds just like the film to stir up uncomfortable issues. But does director Ant Timpson balance the comedy and horror genres that always so hard to manage? Then the raunchy 80's comedy marathon begins with ‘Porky's'. Matt and Chris have regretted setting this one up since they thought of it. Can it possibly be as good as its reputation, or as bad they fear it is? There's the always at least 70% entertaining review of the big releases on home video, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week. The show then closes with the return of our role-playing game Who Dat?!?, featuring guest appearances by Tom Cruise, Taiki Waititi, and the long-awaited return of Jimmy Hollywood!00:00-09:30: Intro/Come To Daddy09:31-22:55: Home Video Picks22:56-36:10: Porky's36:11-49:39: Who Dat?!?49:40-52:20: Wrap UpTheme music by Jamal Malachi Ford-Bey

IMDB gives this as the storyline: Norval's life has been, to put it lightly, difficult. Currently living home with his mother, the troubled young man is coming off alcohol-related struggles. So when he receives an unexpected letter from his estranged father requesting a visit, Norval catches a bus up to his dad's secluded and scenic waterfront home. Maybe reconnecting with his father will give Norval the emotional fulfillment he's been lacking. Before long, though, he notices something off about his dad, an uneasy feeling triggered by inappropriate comments and a possible over-dependence on booze. Norval quickly realizes that his hope of father/son bonding is doomed. Instead of a family reunion, he finds himself in a waking nightmare. source Elijah Wood alone is a major reason to watch this film. He wins for worst haircut and neck tattoo in an ensemble but we all like watching him, so if you haven't seen it yet, give it a watch. If you have seen it, you may agree or disagree with my take. Please leave a comment explaining what you liked or disliked about my review. I have multiple places you can reach me: rileyonfilm.com, Riley on Film my Facebook Page, or Riley on Film on Twitter. To divide up my many thoughts on this film, I offer this: This film works as a horror because of its 1) director, 2) star quality, and 3) well-placed hardcore violence that is borderline comical (because it's so graphic). First, the director Ant Timpson. As a horror fan you will recognize the movies he's made: "Turbo Kid" and "Housebound" to name just 2. I think the big actors in this probably took the role because of this avant garde director. He knocked the ball out of the park with this one. There is usually a comedic element to his films but they are intense and often scary (I don't know how scary I would rate Turbo Kid but it's graphic). So now that you know the director is established and talented, let's look at the stars in this film. Who can think of Elijah Wood as any character other than Frodo Baggins? I sure can't. He plunges earthward though in this film, showing he has the chops to do much more. I hope we see him in more horror. In 2012 he starred in "Maniac" which holds its own with fans as a solid slasher horror. Let's hope he keeps on the horror tip. But he's not the only star quality in this film. Stephen McHattie is becoming known for a lot of Typecast roles. This is for good reason because I plays the scary old emaciated man role well! He is the DJ in the indie horror modern classic "Pontypool." He's great in that and delivers a class act performance as what I will call "the original dad" in "Come to Daddy (Gordon). His gravelly voice and visage make the scenes come alive with suspense and horror. All that is prior to "the fork scene" where a Thai actor is emasculated with the rustic utensil. This is one of the most violent kill scenes I've encountered in recent years. I suppose a worse one is done with a straight razor down Brian Cranston's character's arm in "Drive." But I digress. But that brings me to the third viable element in this film: the well-placed violence. In addition to the soon-to-be-famous fork killing, there is a partial decapitation that should have audiences squirming. IMDB labels this a comedy as well as a horror but I think that would only apply to the black comedy label. These are brutal kills. They'd fit in the context of the story though. In conclusion, I hope you see and agree with me these three attributes make the film a must see for horror fans. I gave it a 6/10. Where it lost points were in the long spaces between kills and other milestones of the plot which were lagging a bit. It could have had more exposition of the characters of it could have just been shorter. I would still make it required watching for my class on Horror (If I ever teach one).

Hi everyone! It’s Friday, and Andrew’s bringing the Fantastic Fest fire with today’s film, a behind-the-scenes documentary into the origins of Aphex Twin’s 1997 album, “Come to Daddy”. We’ll get everything from the influences behind the composition, along with the cult music video, which... What’s that? This is a comedy horror film starring Elijah Wood? But influenced by the album, right? No? Right, well, I don’t know what today’s film is about, but Andrew does, and he’ll be up in a minute. I guess I can just shelve this thirty-minute spoken word audio tribute I had ready to go. Oh yeah, be sure to check out Andrew’s recent reviews for THE LODGE (Episode #702), COLOR OUT OF SPACE (Episode #695), and STARFISH (Episode #688). Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Andrew here, back today with the book-end to last week’s review of THE LODGE. I’ve got another film that takes place almost entirely in a remote home that’s much too large and far too well-appointed to be called a cabin. THE LODGE opens wide today, an incredibly dark and humorless tale. As a counterpoint, today’s film also opens wide today and is also incredibly dark, but... it does have a bit of humor. Incredibly dark humor. Let’s get to it. Today’s movie is COME TO DADDY(2019), written by Toby Harvard and Ant Timpson and directed by Timpson. The film made its Texas Premiere at the 2019 Fantastic Fest, marking the directorial debut of Timpson as well as the second feature film screenwriting Harvard, following up on 2016’s THE GREASY STRANGLER. (I’ve seen THE GREASY STRANGLER. Do not watch THE GREASY STRANGLER.) COME TO DADDY stars Fantastic Fest mascot Elijah Wood as Norval Greenwood, a man in his mid-30s who has been summoned out of the blue by a handwritten letter to reconnect with his long-estranged father at a remote Oregon home overlooking a lake. After his father walked out when he was five, Norval’s mother raised him alone in Beverly Hills. Norval has largely failed to capitalize on his privileged beginnings, living the life of an unsuccessful musician, still residing with his mother and, perhaps most egregiously, sporting a catastrophically bad haircut. Norval is readily willing to bury three decades of deep resentment for a chance to connect with the father he never knew, but soon learns that time does not heal all wounds. Problems ensue. The trailer for COME TO DADDY does the film a severe injustice, which is unfortunate as this was a great experience to enter blind. (Of course, I mean after you’ve listened to my review a handful of times.) A LOT happens in this movie - twists and turns that turn the plot on its head multiple times - early and often. The trailer doesn’t overtly spoil any of what’s about to unfold in the film, but it does set your brain up to anticipate how certain scenes will come to play out. Its sheer unpredictability is what I loved most about the film. The writers took the kitchen sink approach to the script, “yes, and”-ing themselves into a wild story. The way in which the trailer (perhaps necessarily) reveals images of what’s to come after a few of the key plot pivots also make the film look a bit pedestrian, when in reality it is unique unto itself. Elijah Wood is as charming as ever as the lovable loser about to go off the deep end. It’s been nearly twenty years since the end of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and over that time period he has become more and more immersed in genre films that appeal to his personal tastes. Perhaps he sparked the trend that saw other young franchise stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Kristen Stewart, and Robert Pattinson make their millions on big studio properties and transition into more interesting roles. Elijah Wood’s even been quietly involved as producer on perhaps Nic Cage’s only decent films of the last five years, COLOR OUT OF SPACE (Episode #695) and MANDY (Joseph, when are we getting your take on Mandy already?). JOSEPH: “First of all, you are forgetting the delightful MOM AND DAD (Episode #475). And second, see patreon.com/onemoviepunch for details about Sponsor Sundays, where you can force me to review a movie. MANDY wouldn’t feel like much of a force, though, to be honest.” Wood’s commitment to this role in his out-there film that he has to carry for all 90 minutes is obvious at every second. Earnest Norval could have just as easily stepped out of a character drama, with Wood wearing every bit of his insecurities and bitterness on his sleeve even as his surrounding story grows chaotic. What makes COME TO DADDY fantastic? The film just never lets up. If anything, the only knock on COME TO DADDY is that it can be a bit of a punishing sit. There is levity throughout the film, but overall it’s fraught with such unyielding tension and had me pulled in so deeply, that I found it an exhausting experience. However, like with all films, you only get one chance to see them for the first time and you may or may not be in the perfect headspace at that moment. I think that’s the case here... and no I don’t think I can survive it again. COME TO DADDYis a blackly comic, scattershot riot that becomes a brand-new film every 15 minutes. Fans of chaotic and unpredictable films such as GREEN ROOM (Episode #054), BLUE RUIN (Episode #456), or Elijah Wood’s I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE will enjoy this film. JOSEPH: “There’s another one I wouldn’t feel forced to review!” Rotten Tomatoes: 91% Metacritic: 61 One Movie Punch: 7.8/10 COME TO DADDY (2019) is rated Rand is available today in theaters and on VOD. Come back next week for a riveting film that you’ve never heard of. I’ll be covering SCHOOL’S OUT, a French film that was given a horrible English title translation that makes it sound like a 1980s slapstick teen comedy. In fact, it’s actually a mysterious daytime noir set in an honors classroom after a devoted teacher jumps from the third-story window. I’ll see you then.
