In the sixth episode of Season 4 (The Horror, The Horror) Kyle is joined by script supervisor Katy Baldwin and screenwriter David Gutierrez to discuss the Val Lewton produced moody, strange, and historically perceptive reflection on colonialism, slavery, and the horror stream of history in Jacques Tourneur's I Walked with a Zombie
Originally from Philadelphia, Wanderlust emerged in 1995 with a major label album called Prize, which garnered the rock radio hit “I Walked.” The band was working on album number two when they were unceremoniously dropped. In the years that followed, leader Scot Sax focused on writing songs, co-writing the Grammy-winning song “Like We Never Loved at All” for Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. He's also become a much sought-after filmmaker, directing the documentary Platinum Rush. During the pandemic, Sax was combing through his archives and stumbled across a DAT tape of acoustic demos he was working on during the band's heyday. He decided to get his bandmates back together (at least virtually) and complete the album - taking his original vocals and guitars from 1996 and adding present day instrumentation over top. The result is All a View, an album that features the classic, melodic sound of Wanderlust, circa the mid-90's, with a modern-day punch.

I Walked into an Interview with No Elevator Pitch and Here's What Happened …Talking about yourself seems easy enough—but do you know how to effectively sell who you are and what you do? We hear it all the time…Always be prepared. And when applied to your career, that means being ready for tough interviews and meetings, and exuding confidence when selling your personal brand. It means having your ‘pitch'—who you are, what you do, and why you do it—readily prepared.

Well, today's episode turned out different than expected. I was planning on talking about owning your mood, that Self Integrity is as powerful as Peace. That, if you're in a bad mood, own it. If you are in a good mood and someone outside of yourself brings negativity to your day, how to Re-focus and stick to the integrity of your decision to have a great day. While chatting through the process, I Walked the Path to Peace through to Surrender. Today I woke in a bad mood. While talking to you, the Miracle of the 5 Steps unfolded right in front of me! Movie spoilers ahead! This week we have a drink with Bill and delve into the world of film. The occult and religion have a big role in cinema, so we narrowed our discussion to two movies that explore Santeria to... differing effects: "I Walked with a Zombie" (1943), and "Angel Heart" (1987). Join us for a drink as we chat about the actual craft of film making, the history of the medium, and give some background insight to what makes a movie spooky. We also touch on the important subject of racism and xenophobia in movies that use other cultures for shock value, the importance of doing your research, and such taboo subjects as Mickey Rourke's ass. Check out Bill's work in I Don't Get It and American Caesar. And be sure to reach out to him on Twitter! Movies referenced in this show include "The Haunted Castle" (1896), and E. Zombifying a Nation: Race, Gender and the Haitian Loas on Screen (McFarland, 2016) dwells on the intersections of memory, history, and cultural production in both Africa and the African diaspora. The figure of the zombie that entered the popular imagination with the publication of William Seabrook’s book The Magic Island (1929) during the American occupation of Haiti still holds cultural currency around the world. Zombifying a Nation: Race, Gender and the Haitian Loas on Screen calls for a rethinking of zombies in a sociopolitical context through the examination of several films, including White Zombie (1932), The Love Wanga (1935), I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988). A 21st-century film from Haiti, Zombi candidat la presidence … ou les amours dun zombi, is also examined. A reading of Heading South (2005), a film about the female tourist industry in the Caribbean, explores zombification as a consumptive process driven by capitalism. Author Toni Pressley-Sanon holds a Ph.D. in African Languages and Literatures with a minor in Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also holds an M.A. in Liberal Studies and Anthropology from the New School for Social Research and a B.A. in Comparative Literature with a minor in African-American Studies from Hamilton College. She is an assistant professor at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In addition to Zombifying a Nation: Race, Gender and the Haitian Loas on Screen, Pressley-Sanon has a forthcoming book titled Istwa across the Water: Haitian History, Memory, and the Cultural Imagination. The work reads the historical and contemporary relationship between Dahomey/Benin Republic, Kongo and Saint Domingue/Haiti dialectically; that is, as a “long conversation” that is facilitated by the ebb and flow of the ocean’s waves. She argues that this relationship is anchored in memory and manifest through material culture on both sides of the Atlantic divide. Composer of more than 100 jazz pieces, three-time Grammy nominee, and performer on more than 125 albums, saxophonist Jimmy Heath has earned a place of honor in the history of jazz. Over his long career, Heath knew many jazz giants, such as Charlie Parker, and played with other innovators, including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and especially Dizzy Gillespie. Along the way, Heath won both their respect and their friendship. In his autobiography, the legendary Heath creates a “dialogue” with musicians and family members. As in jazz, where improvisation by one performer prompts another to riff on the same theme, I Walked with Giants juxtaposes Heath’s account of his life and career with recollections from jazz giants about life on the road and making music on the world’s stages. His memories of playing with his equally legendary brothers, Percy and Albert (aka “Tootie”), dovetail with their recollections. Heath reminisces about a South Philadelphia home filled with music and a close-knit family that hosted musicians performing in the city’s then thriving jazz scene. Milt Jackson recalls, “I went to their house for dinner. . . . Jimmy’s father put Charlie Parker records on and told everybody that we had to be quiet till dinner because he had Bird on. . . . When I [went] to Philly, I’d always go to their house.” Jimmy Heath, an NEA Jazz Master, is widely recognized as one of the greats in jazz. A saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator, Heath grew up in Philadelphia with his renowned brothers, Percy, the longtime bassist with the Modern Jazz Quartet, and Albert (“Tootie”), a highly respected drummer. The three formed the Heath Brothers Band in the ’70s. Jimmy Heath directed the Jazz Studies master’s degree program in performance at Queens College (CUNY).

#InGoodTaste, cooking up a storm on ZoneOneRadio - the community radio station for central London. Burgers are hugely popular on the London food scene at the moment with Gourmet burger joints such as Patty and Bun enjoying great success. Seeking inspiration from America - the undisputed home of the burger, it seems that in London, the dirtier and greasier the burger, the better. We went along to the slider decider- a competition organised by the Gun pub near Canary Wharf where we talked to blogger Bergerac, Masterchef winner Tim Anderson, Bloomberg food critic Richard Vines and Original Fry Up Material. We also speak to Daniel Young of Burger Monday fame about his cult burger events in London and why he thinks burgers are so popular. Scot Sax was the leader of the Philadelphia band Wanderlust, who scored a rock radio hit with “I Walked” in 1995, before breaking up two years later. He then formed Bachelor Number One, who had a song on the first American Pie soundtrack. A few years later, in a strange twist of fate, Sax co-wrote the song “Like We Never Loved At All,” a hit for Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, which won a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 2006. Icon Fetch talks to Sax about his long strange trip, how he handled that initial success, and what it was like opening for the Who.
