Who'd have thought that answering a magazine advert to be a man's "wife" on an island, fending for yourself for an entire year, would be a terrible idea? They have to live off the land, free from outside influence, a true escape from the monotony of city life in London. We believe this feeling of "escape" is a very "Western" idealist concept. In that respect, it's a very throwaway idea. But these guys actually did it. And here's the end result.Based on the true story of Lucy Irvine, who answered a magazine advert to spend one year on a secluded island with a man she had just met seems too wild to have happened. Starring Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe, directed by Nicholas Roeg, this film is a mixed experience, especially as rare as the film is to obtain in its original, legitimate release.

This week Bryan and Dave take a look at a nasty little indie from New Jersey that can't help but get a little on ya. Alfred Sole's Alice, Sweet Alice is a vicious movie with a real bone to pick with the Catholic church. Following his actual excommunication from the church having, Alfred Sole pulled together every resource he could, with a script co-written by Rosemary Ritvo and heavily, heavily inspired by Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now, it pits a community of deeply repressed middle-class Catholics against a killer who brutally murders a child in a church. Is it the deeply disturbed problem-child Alice? All signs point to yes but it's complicated, of course. Perverse and dark in the extreme, Alice, Sweet Alice stands alone in the 1970's as a truly original, truly mean piece of horror with a hell of a cast and some seriously nasty special effects. Like Schwarzenegger after him, he just needed to find the role he was born to play. Following the career track of Nicholas Roeg, we come to one of his seminal films, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. It's a head-scratcher and we say that with an understanding of Roeg's work being a little disjointed and a heavy use of visual metaphors and match cutting BUT... It would have been nice to get a better through-line in the story. But no one hates this movie at OTB HQ, certainly not when Rip Torn is tearing through this sexy sci-fi circus like a Professor Lothario!

Daphne du Maurier was a prolific English writer of novels, plays, and short stories resonant with what she termed "a sense of unreality." In this episode, JF and Phil discuss her great short story "Don't Look Now," which Nicholas Roeg famously adapted to the screen in 1973 in a film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Recorded live at Shannon Taggart's Lily Dale Symposium on July 25th, 2024, the discussion takes a number of turns, exploring the ghost as an "image of itself," the phenomenon of "deathishness," the experience of derealization, the human capacity to break time, and grief as a rift in time. Can a film be slow, unsettling, and still be considered a horror classic? This week on Screams & Streams, we dissect the 1973 film "Don't Look Now," directed by Nicholas Roeg. Despite its 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating, our initial impressions are split. Sam finds it sluggish and not fitting the horror genre, while Mike, on his second watch, sees the beauty in its looping narrative but still agrees it's not traditional horror. Chad appreciates the stellar cinematography and acting, though he too notes the pacing issues. We kick things off with a plot summary and our "sinister sip" of the episode: scotch, inspired by a key scene in the film.We then move on to scrutinize specific scenes, especially those featuring Donald Sutherland. Expect a thorough critique of the unrealistic knife attack and the awkward drowning rescue scene. We also discuss the prolonged sex scene that's oddly edited and the peculiarities of Sutherland's performance quirks. From the "useless cop" trope to the "old psychic warning," our "Tropes Hall of Shame" segment is packed with insights and laughs. We even touch upon the controversial sex scene that stirred discomfort for both Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, questioning its necessity and its divergence from the source material. Finally, we examine the film's audio and music elements, noting the impactful use of cellos and chimes, and highlight standout "what the fuck" moments like a bizarre hospital window setup and a shocking meat cleaver incident. Our in-depth analysis covers atmospheric nuances, narrative elements, and the portrayal of parental grief. We conclude with our mixed reviews; while Mike and Chad find merit in its narrative and visual storytelling, rating it a six out of ten, Sam gives it a much lower score as a horror film. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we are pointing our compasses southward to the land of doom and gloom:Australia! Don't be fooled by the likes of Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious and Thor, underneath that loopy, whimsical Australian charm, lies an unparalleled grim and sober yet prophetic outlook about life on Earth as evidenced by 1971's Walkabout directed by Nicholas Roeg, though full disclosure: he's an Englishman who shepherded Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil and John Meillion to cinematic prominence, then 1982's The Road Warrior aka Mad Max 2 directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Kjell Nillson, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Mike Preston, Arkie Whitely, Viginia Hey and Emil Minty then topped off with The Road directed by Australian native John Hillcoat and starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Garrett Dillahunt, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Guy Pearce  and Robert Duvall.  My guests today are once again the series regulars who have both the stomach and gloomy disposition to take solace in rewatching these films back-to-back-to-back, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we go on a walkabout of our own, the synopses: In Walkabout, a perfectly ordinary pair of upper-class English siblings get lost in the Australian outback after their father takes them for a picnic then tries to murder them. They look to be perfect candidates for either heat stroke and/or vulture food until they are rescued by a young Aboriginal teen out on his Walkabout.  The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2  raises the stakes of the original Mad Max and picks up the story with ex cop Max Rockatansky travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of  civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a slim chance to survive.  In The Road a Man risks all to protect his Boy and teach him survival skills in another bleak and nightmarish future where all plant and animal life is gone and the dominant humans subsist through murder and cannibalism.    Which film is king of the outback/queen of the end times?Find out!

1985's Crimewave was the sophmore effort for Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, actor and producer Bruce Campbell and producer Bob Tapert.  The film started as the script The XYZ Murders by Joel and Ethan Coen.  Raimi and genre friendly production company Avco-Embassy agreed the script was a winner and started shooting on a 2.5 million dollar budget.  And that's when the problems started.  With really young and relatively inexperienced fillmmakers at the helm, the budget balllooned, actors started getting hurt and animosity grew.   Dan and Vicky, coming to you from NY and Nantucket, discuss the mostly reviled comedy thriller along with alot of recently seen, including the new Indiana Jones, Netflix's We Have a Ghost, Past Lives, King Richard, Black Mirror season 6, 1970 Nicholas Roeg film Performance, and the genius of Sean Hayes in the Broadway show Good Night Oscar.   Have a listen and follow us on social media below.  Also buy tickets to Dan's show Tales from the Guttenberg Bible at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, Long Island. https://www.baystreet.org/ Follow us here: hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast Twitter: @HotDate726 Insta:  hotdatepod

In this 2nd part of our ongoing series exploring the beauty and pathos of 1970's films, with your host Mitch Hampton! More on this series, here: In this, the second part of a 70s movie series, I will explore the most unusual editing style of 70s cinema. Many people think that 70s movies are unique for their slowness or long takes and the enormous attention paid to the actors on screen and, while all this is true, the uniqueness of 70s movies is that they use long takes in combination with very short, abrupt and jagged editing - often purposefully in violation of classical editing practice and without the usual preparations to prepare audiences for scene transitions. It is all these working together that give the films their visual and narrative style. One of the effects of this stylistic strategy is to create overall mystery in the films and an uncertainty in the viewer - qualities of mind that are actually closer to our daily lives, including our interior thoughts and feelings, than we often are often ready to admit. In psychological jargon, 70s movies are opposed to "closure". And unlike in films after the 1980s. the goal is not to show associational connection between one image and the next as in montage, nor to establish rhythm, but conversely, to create a cubistic and pluralistic vision of reality. Editors and films discussed will include Dede Allen, Suzanne Pettit and films like Night Moves, Girlfriends, Klute, some to be announced, and those of Nicholas Roeg. #films #Cinema #aesthetics #funkyfridayatfive --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/support

FIFTEEN MINUTE FILM FANATICS

Mike and Dan take off to Venice to discuss Nicholas Roeg's 1973 thriller Don't Look Now.  They talk about how the film reflects many people's conflicted approach to the supernatural and how watching a movie is like having second sight: the movie lets the viewer act  like a psychic for a few moments at a time.  They praise the film as one that's every bit as good as its surprise ending and, along the way, bring in 2001, The Sixth Sense, The Wicker Man, The Godfather, Macbeth--and even Animal House.  So get off that scaffold, stop chasing that red raincoat, and give it a listen!   Please follow or subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts and on Twitter @15MinFilm.    Incredible bumper music by John Deley.

We are thankfully leaving Vin Diesel and the Riddickverse behind this week as we delve into two films from the same visionary director, Nicholas Roeg. Both films leave an indelible imprint on the viewer with their unorthodox editing and striking imagery. The first, 1973's Don't Look Now, is a meditation on grief through the lens of the supernatural, boasting one of cinema's most unforgettable endings. The second, 1971's Walkabout, tells the story of two children lost in the Australian outback who meet a young Aboriginal boy. This dark tale shows the beauty and chaos of nature along with the insanity of modern man. The Witches (1990), Nicholas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, is traumatising af. A young boy and his grandmother as stumble onto a witch's convention. The witches are wicked and sadistic, and beneath their appearance as regular women are hideous, bald, toe-less creatures who hate children more than anything else. Their leader, the Grand High Witch (portrayed with maximum camp by Anjelica Huston) is the worst witch of them all. I'm joined by the wicked smart Tara Judah, Cinema Producer at the Watershed in Bristol and frequent collaborator of The Final Girls, to dig into some of the reasons why this film, and Angelica Huston's performance, really gets under your skin. We talk about Anjelica Huston's sexy, slinky and campy take on the Grand High Witch, the grotesque physicality of the witches, how this fits into Nicholas Roeg's other work and why it remains terrifying for both children AND adults. *** The Final Girls are a UK-based film collective exploring the intersections of horror film and feminism. Then we get into an Australian film from 2005, a modern western take on the outback and keeping law and order amidst the harsh hell that is the Australian desert in The Proposition starring Guy Pearce and Ray Winstone among others. And finally we talk about a film from director Nicholas Roeg in Walkabout, which experimentally explores the intersection of two British children abandoned in the outback by their mentally-crazed father and an aboriginal teen on his ritual walkabout. The music video:  "What had been a liberating possibility for visual artists working in film, to bring their work towards a wider audience, without the pressure of narrative, without the necessity to tell stories, has become an absolutely fixed promo for the consumerism aimed at the youth market". So says Professor Rod Stoneman in this, the third in Pod Academy’s series based on his book, Seeing is Believing: the Politics of the Visual. which is produced and presented by Esther Gaytan Fuertes. In this podcast, Rod Stoneman talks about the visual experimentation made possible by the music video, which pushes the boundaries of mainstream narrative film. You can find other podcasts in the series here: Podcast 1 on Fashion images and Podcast 2 on graffiti Rod Stoneman: This image [above] comes from a film called Berlin Horse made by Malcolm Le Grice in 1970, an experimental film from the London Filmmakers’ Co-op. And it’s a striking visual image made from permutations of colour printing, using loops, a horse going round in a circle and a clip from an early American silent film, working alongside music in an interesting way. The music is created by Brian Eno using loops of guitar chords, which the chords are of different lengths so as they go round they change the relationship of the different sets of guitar chords to one another. And it suggests a previous history of work with sound and image happening in the experimental domain: Kenneth Anger made Scorpio Rising and Kustom Kar Kommandos even within I’d say mainstream films but even within feature film productions like Performance by Nicholas Roeg and Donald Cammell there is a sequence where Mike Jagger comes out of character to create a music video, you could say, or premonition of, and Bob Dylan’s famous film with the different lines from Subterranean Homesick Blues. These are precursors of something that really developed when music television started in the early 70s, when MTV was created. Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet was absolutely right when he said, video was something that a band had to be good at; if you weren’t visual, if you couldn’t work in front of a camera you were not going to happen as a band. It's absolutely clear that, at that moment, MTV offered a possibility for brave and experimental work which didn’t have to be concerned with story telling or narrative to connect with contemporary music and reach a wider audience. But, quite quickly industrial constraints exerted themselves and some videos were taken to be too difficult or too experimental or —occasionally the phrase was used— not ‘MTV- friendly’. That excluded some work, also contracts to be drawn up —I mean, a pop-promo is precisely a promotional tour— and contracts began to be drawn up defining what the film-maker had to achieve in terms of, say, featuring a medium close shot of the lead singer of the band within the first 30 seconds. So that began to close what had been a liberating possibility for visual artists working in film, to bring their work towards a wider audience, without the pressure of narrative, without the necessity to tell stories. The current version of music videos is an absolutely fixed promo for the consumerism, aimed at the youth market. MTV itself has moved off to other formats, to reality television, and the space for something as extraordinary as Malcolm Le Grice’s Berlin Horse —which, interestingly, was used in the Doves’ music video Catch the Sun in a rather decorative way— the space for new visually experiment has really been closed off. If you have enjoyed this podcast, remember you can listen or download the rest of this series from our website, www.podacademy.org Seeing is Believing: The politics of the visual is published by Black Dog (UK £19.95, US £29.95) It explores the complex and reciprocal dynamic between world and image in this most visually mediated society.
