Ismailis from South Asia find their origins in Gujarat, Sindh and Punjab. Their ancestors belonged to various castes such as the Lohana and Bhatia communities, who found themselves drawn to the teachings of Muslim saints, known as pirs or sayyids. According to community tradition, Ismaili pirs were sent from Persia by the Imams – or spiritual leaders – to spread knowledge of who the Ismaili Imams are, and the notion of the Imam as the guide to spiritual enlightenment.  The pirs did this through ginans, one thousand or more religious hymns that are assumed to date as far back as the thirteenth century. The people that accepted these teachings came to be known as Satpanthis: those who followed Satpanth, or the True Path. On this episode, Ali Asani, professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures at Harvard University, speaks to us about ginans, and the fascinating evolution of this particular Ismaili tradition over the past 800 years.

E. in Balkh Province, Afghanistan, on the eastern edge of the Persian Empire. Rumi descended from a long line of Islamic jurists, theologians, and mystics, including his father, who was known by followers of Rumi as "Sultan of the Scholars." When Rumi was still a young man, his father led their family more than 2,000 miles west to avoid the invasion of Genghis Khan's armies. They settled in present-day Turkey, where Rumi lived and wrote most of his life.As a teenager, Rumi was recognized as a great spirit by the poet and teacher Fariduddin Attar, who gave him a copy of his own Ilahinama (The Book of God). When his father died in 1231, Rumi became head of the madrasah, or spiritual learning community. Rumi's oldest son, Sultan Velad, managed to save 147 of Rumi's intimate letters, which provide insights about the poet and how he lived. Rumi often involved himself in the lives of his community members, solving disputes and facilitating loans between nobles and students. The letters are described as having lines of poetry scattered throughout. In 1244, Rumi met Shams Tabriz, who had taken a vow of poverty. Their meeting is considered a central event in Rumi's life, and Rumi believed his real poetry began when he met Shams. They were close friends for about four years. Over the course of that time, Shams was repeatedly driven away by Rumi's jealous disciples, including one of Rumi's sons, Ala al-Din. In December of 1248, Shams again disappeared; it is believed that he was either driven away or killed. Rumi left the madrasah in search of his friend, traveling to Damascus and elsewhere. Eventually, Rumi made peace with his loss, returning to his home. Rumi's mourning for the loss of his friend led to the outpouring of more than 40,000 lyric verses, including odes, eulogies, quatrains, and other styles of Eastern-Islamic poetry. The resulting collection, Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi or The Works of Shams Tabriz, is considered one of Rumi's masterpieces and one of the greatest works of Persian literature. For the last twelve years of his life, beginning in 1262, Rumi dictated a single, six-volume poem to his scribe, Husam Chelebi. The resulting masterwork, the Masnavi-ye Ma'navi(Spiritual Verses), consists of sixty-four thousand lines, and is considered Rumi's most personal work of spiritual teaching. Rumi described the Masnavi as "the roots of the roots of the roots of the (Islamic) Religion," and the text has come to be regarded by some Sufis as the Persian-language Koran.Rumi fell ill and died on December 17, 1273 C. E., in Konya, Turkey. His remains were interred adjacent to his father's, and the Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb) was erected above their final resting place. Now the Mevlâna museum, the site includes a mosque, dance hall, and dervish living quarters. Thousands of visitors, of all faiths, visit his tomb each month, honoring the poet of legendary spiritual understanding. From https://poets.org/poet/jalal-al-din-rumi. For more information about Rumi:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Natasha Trethewey about Rumi, at 07:55: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-145-natasha-trethewey“Jalal al-Din Rumi”: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/jalal-al-din-rumi“How Did Rumi Become One of Our Best-Selling Poets?”: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/20/books/review/rumi-brad-gooch.html

A child is an entrustment in the hands of its parents. The child's pure heart is like a precious gem. Like wax, a child can take any shape. When small, it has not taken any shape. It is like pure soil. You will reap what you sow in pure soil. If children are taught the tenets of iman, the Quran al-Karim and the commandments of Allahu Taala and accustomed to doing them, they will attain religious and worldly happiness. Their parents and teachers will share this happiness of theirs. If they are not taught and trained, they will become miserable. The sin of each evil they will commit will be given to their parents and teachers, too. Allahu Taala declares in the sixth ayat of Tahrim Sura: “Protect yourselves and those in your homes and under your command from the fire!” It is more important for a father to protect his children against the fire of Hell than against worldly fire. And to protect them against the fire of Hell is to teach them iman, the fard and the haram, to accustom them to worshipping, and to protect them against irreligious and immoral friends. The source of all kinds of immoral deeds is an evil friend. Our Prophet (sall-Allahu alaihi wa sallam), by stating, “All children are born fit and suitable for Islam. Later, their parents make them Christians, Jews, or irreligious,” indicates that both for the settlement and for the annihilation of Islam the most important work on children can be done when they are still young. Then, the first duty of each Muslim is to teach their children Islam and the Quran al-Karim. The child is a great blessing. If the blessing is not appreciated, it will be lost. Therefore, pedagogy, that is the science of teaching children, is a very valuable science in the Islamic religion.

Allahu Taala has established the Islamic religion in such a manner that it addresses every new development and invention in every country. Showing toleration and latitude not only in social life, but also in worships, the Islamic religion has given men freedom and the right of ijtihad (meaning or conclusion drawn by great scholars called mujtahids through endeavoring to understand the hidden meaning in an ayat karima or a Hadith sharif) when they confront with different conditions and necessities. During the times of Hazrat Umar, the Umayyads and such a big empire as the Ottoman Empire, large communities of various peoples, living over continents, were administered with these divine rules. Muslims' accomplishments and glories have been famous throughout history. And in the future, every nation, big or small, will attain comfort, peace and happiness in proportion to the extent to which it obeys and practices these unchangeable divine rules. Nations and societies which deviate from the social and economic rules declared by Islam will not escape hardships, suffering and trouble. It is written in history that this has been so with nations in the past, and so will it certainly be in the future. History is repetitive. Muslims should attach great importance to national unity and solidarity; they should be extremely active materially and morally in making their country stronger; they should learn the teachings of the Islamic religion very well; they should abstain from haram; and they should pay their debts to Allahu Taala, the State and His human creatures. They should be embellished with the beautiful morals of Islam and should not cause harm to anybody. They should not be a means of agitation, that is they should not cause anarchy, and they should pay their taxes. Our religion, Islam, commands us to behave in that manner. The first obligation of a Muslim is to avoid being guilty of breaking State laws and going against Allahu Taala by sinning, by not following the devil or one's nafs, and by not believing bad, insidious, disobedient and rebellious people.

Muslims are obligated to believe in all Inspired Books that God has sent down to serve humanity, as delivered through His Prophets. Every Prophet received Inspiration from God. Some Revelations were later compiled to form the content of larger Books such as the Holy Quran, Gospel, Torah, and the Zabur. The Arabic word for Inspiration or Revelation is Wahi which has several meanings. Wahi means an idea or something revealed or written, commandment, suggestion, to point out something, or to send a message. Inspiration or Revelation comes to God's Human Prophets either directly or through an intermediary of the Angel Gabriel, who brings the Revelation to them. Every religion that believes in God believes in Revelation. God's Books to mankind contain Commandments of God, prohibitions, exhortations, stories, parables, reminders, descriptions of Himself and His Attributes, descriptions of the afterlife, Heaven and Hell, the purpose of life, the creation of the Universe, Worship, Piety, morals, manners, the importance of being kind to one's parents, and much more. These Books seek to guide man through every aspect of life. God's Books act as a guide, an instructional manual regarding how one's life should be lived. God, in a high manifestation of His Mercy, Compassion, and Love, sent Books to teach and guide humanity. "...Your Lord is the possessor of vast Mercy..." (Qur'an 6:147) Islam counts as an article of faith the belief in all of God's Books, in their original, pure form. “Say, [O believers], ‘We have believed in Allah and what has been Revealed to us and what has been Revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him'"(Quran 2:136) Unfortunately, the modern-day texts of the Torah and Bible have been altered by men and contain mixtures of humanmade ideas and innovations that corrupt their current state. Whereas these Books still contain some remaining traces of truth, they do not stand in their original revealed form. God warns in his final Testament, the Holy Quran: "So, woe to those who write the ‘scripture’ with their own hands, then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn" (Quran 2:79) When previous Holy Scriptures were altered and corrupted by human hand, God in his Mercy enlisted his last and Revelation, the Holy Qur'an. God has taken it upon Himself to safeguard & protect his final Book to humanity from human-made alterations or any form of corruption. The Holy Quran is the only scripture in existence today that exists in its original language and words. Not one letter of the Quran has been changed since its Revelation. The Holy Quran is meant to serve and teach all people until the end of time. Everything found in the Quran is truth, with no evidence of contradictions or falseness, and will remain so for eternity. Muslims believe that the Koran has abrogated all previous Scriptures before it; meaning it cancels the rulings of the earlier scriptures and renders them inapplicable going forward since the preceding scriptures were meant for the earlier nations and not for us. God, in his infinite wisdom, did not feel fit to send down the Holy Quran at the time of previous nations. As the Creator of the World and everything it contains, God knows who is capable of understanding and who is not.  Although different revelations came down to various Prophets and nations, the general Message had always remained the same: 'To worship God Alone and to follow his Commandments.' The Quran mentions the following Books by name: Torah was sent with the Prophet Moses (Musa in Arabic) to the Children of Israel Psalms (Zabur in Arabic) was sent with Prophet David (Dawood in Arabic) to the children of Israel Gospel (Injeel in Arabic) was sent with Prophet Jesus (Isa in Arabic) to the children of Israel The Scripture Revealed to Prophet Abraham The Holy Qur'an was sent with the last and final Prophet, Muhammad to our nation, which is the last nation, to all of humanity. No other scripture will be revealed after it. Video and Blog Article By TheSincereSeeker

In this episode we bring him back to talk about another part of the Islamic Religion, that of Sufism. Sufism is the mystical version of Islam and we explore with Dr. Furnish about it's origins, beliefs, and the various Sufi groups. What does the average American know about the Religion of Islam? Do Americans even care? After listening to my special guest who is Palestinian , and born into the Islamic Religion, and who now has a Fatwa placed on her own head, you best listen up. This Broadcast sheds the light of truth on the religion of Islam and places my guest in a very serious situation, but because of her love for Christ..the truth must be told...it's not as nice as the American Government wishes us to believe. This is NOT the Islam CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC tells you about..this is uncut and straight from the Quran and the knowledge that Farrah has to interpret the writings of the Quran. "O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people." (Quran 5:51) and there are many others that say the same thing. There are also many verses that support "And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing" (Quran 2:191).?
