As one of the premiere cruiserweights in Southern California, Chris Kadillak was a testament to high-flying wrestling, done correctly. In many ways, it always felt like Kadillak was the unofficial gatekeeper of the SoCal Indie scene. And the amount of places Kadillak worked was nearly limitless. Up and down the West Coast, be in PWG, EWF, AWS, SoCal Pro, Mach-1, APW, and IWL, and was a regular for the National Wrestling Alliance. Kadillak worked with a handful of the top NWA names in 2008 (The NWA Wrestling Showcase) program that aired on Colours. Towards the end of his in-ring career, Kadillak was sharing the ring with Jack Cartwheel, Alexander Hammerstone, SoCal Crazy, and Danny Limelight. He held championships with the Empire Wrestling Federation, while still affiliated with the NWA. He held championship gold in New Wave Pro Wrestling, AWS, and Gold Coast Wrestling Federation. Join us at 8 PM Eastern as we look back at the career that made Chris Kadillak. We'll discuss coming up in the EWF, representing Riverside, CA, Junior Heavyweights in SoCal, and his time working with David Marquez and his National Wrestling Alliance. All this and more. In this conversation, MBM's Mariyam Haider is joined by Sabah Khan, Co-Founder of Parcham - a Mumbai-based feminist organisation that champions inclusion, diversity and equality within the society. For more than a decade, Parcham has been running a football program that trains girls from marginalised communities and different religious backgrounds to become footballers and coaches. Their football program began in Mumbra (a predominantly Muslim ghetto on the outskirts of Mumbai) and over the years has expanded across different suburban areas of the metropolis. Through this football initiative, Parcham has helped girls tackle conservatism and orthodoxy within their families and communities, and at the same time, enabled them to reclaim public spaces for themselves. In this episode, Sabah shares her own journey growing up in a ghetto, the impact of the 1992-93 anti-Muslim violence in Mumbai on her, reasons for starting Parcham and the journey of young Muslim female footballers over the years. This conversation focuses on how these girls often had to fight for their interest in sports with their families, tackle sexism at home and on ground, how mothers and fathers have come around and supported many on their football journeys, and what more needs to be done to support them build their lives around a sport they have come to love.Episode notes* In Mumbra, Girls From Ghettoised Minorities Are Kicking Their Way To Independence (Outlook, February 2023)* Documentary: Under the Open Sky (School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, April 2018)* Sabah Khan, Reimagining Play In: Sports Studies in India. What we eat and how we eat is a large part of the obesity problem and the growing waistlines we see today. It's very hard to resist the foods we love and there are very good reasons as to why. First, there's the food manufacturers themselves that have an uncanny ability to create food that smells, tastes, and looks delicious. But it's not just the crafty work of the food manufacturers, we also have our ancestors to thank. As hunter gatherers we evolved to seek out high energy, nutrient dense foods, which gave us best bang for our buck. Food wasn't always available, and it was hard to come by, so we gouged when it was available. Fast forward to today's environment - our genes haven't changed but our food environment has. The added fat, salt and sugars in these processed foods trigger addictive-like eating behaviours. How do you prevent the cravings? And how do you prevent the associated weight gain that comes with your favourite foods? Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the studies to find out. Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disorder triggered by the consumption of gluten; a protein found in wheat, rye and barley, to give products such as bread their elasticity and texture. When people with coeliac disease eat gluten, they damage their small intestine and can't absorb nutrients from food. They end up with unpleasant side effects such as itchy skin, heartburn, diarrhoea, bloating and constipation. Despite the increase in gluten-free products in shops and people avoiding it, the disease only affects 1 per cent of the population. Gluten is unsafe for those with coeliac disease BUT is it an issue for the rest of the population? Is going gluten-free a good idea? More people than ever are turning to a vegan diet for a vast variety of reasons – these include ethical, cultural and health reasons. A vegan diet is a type of vegetarian diet that means abstaining from all animal products. This means no meat, poultry or fish. It also means no by-products such as eggs and dairy products. Basically, you're left to eating fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes, which can make it quite challenging to meet your nutritional requirements for a variety of vitamins and minerals. The research identifies six nutritional alarms when turning vegan. Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the studies to find out. How do you deal with fussy eaters?

9 Minutes to Better Health with Dr Nick Fuller

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2023 7:15

Fussy eating is very common in young children and peaks around the age of 3. Fussy, picky, selective, or choosy eating refers to an unwillingness to eat familiar or new foods, and a lack of diet variety – typically less than 20 different foods in your child's diet. This can be a huge stress for parents because if the fussiness persists, it can lead to poor growth and development, nutrient deficiencies, and constipation. Plus it's really annoying.   The literature shows that almost half of all children will go through a fussy eating period and it's a normal stage of development. Most kids are selective eaters. And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense, because it's this food “fussiness” that ensured the survival of our ancestors, thousands of years ago. We sought out foods high in sugar and fat as these foods gave us best bang for our buck during times of food scarcity. And we rejected unfamiliar foods and bitter flavours - such as vegetables - to avoid ingestion of potential toxins. Over time, our genes haven't changed, but the food environment has. Now we're spoilt for choice – you can find your favourite foods on every block and our kids scream out for the stuff. But as the studies show, while the genes that determine food fussiness have been passed on from our ancestors, it's not our fate, and there's some simple tips to deal with our kids unwillingness to eat new foods. Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the science to find out. What can you do to speed up your metabolism?

Metabolism is a term that describes all the chemical reactions in your body that keep your body alive and functioning. It's most often used to describe your basal metabolic rate, or the number of calories you burn at rest. Think of your metabolism, like your car. If you fill your car with poor quality fuel or you let it run out of petrol, it will have no power and won't operate efficiently. The same can be said for your body. If you neglect it, it will be sluggish and you'll burn less calories at rest. And this is not a favourable position to be in, as it makes it hard to manage your weight. Alcohol offers a mixed legacy to our society, having long been used in a broad range of social, cultural and religious contexts. In fact, we've been drinking fermented beverages for about 10,000 years. In Australia, per capita alcohol consumption has been decreasing over the last 50 years. But even though Australia has seen a general reduction in alcohol consumption, it still contributes to a significant amount of disease as reported by the World Health Organization. In fact, it's linked to more than 200 diseases, including cancer, heart disease and liver disease. And that's due to the active ingredient found in alcoholic beverages - a simple molecule called ethanol. This molecule affects the body in many different ways. The one we're most familiar with is how it affects our thinking. It interferes with the brain's communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. But it also directly influences the stomach, heart, gallbladder, and liver, and increases the amount of cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin in the blood all of which impact our health and weight. BUT is it all bad news or are there some benefits from drinking alcohol? Can it be part of a healthy lifestyle? Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the science to find out. One of the biggest challenges in life for women relates to menopause. Typically, women reach menopause, which marks the end of menstruation in a woman's life, between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen much earlier or as late as 60. Most women put on about half a kilo of weight every year during this period of life. This is especially important because considering the average life expectancy of women in developed countries is 81 years, women will spend about 40 per cent of their life in post-menopause, and the weight gain you experience during this time will put you at increased risk of disease. So, how do you prevent the weight gain that comes with menopause? Are hormones to blame? Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the science to find out. This is a topic that is relevant to all of you, if not now, it will be in years to come. And that's because we are an ageing population. By 2051, nearly 25% of the population will be over 65 years and 5% will be over 85 years. There are many considerations as we age but one of the most important is lifestyle, particularly diet. As you become older, your diet needs are different to when you were younger because your body stops working as well as it once did. For example, it's not as good at producing the hormones and enzymes that are required to absorb the nutrients from the food you eat. Consequently, you become more susceptible to nutritional deficiencies and the poor health outcomes that follow. There is no debating that preventative health strategies (for example, a healthy diet and a healthy weight) that are adopted in early life have the greatest effect on preventing disease, but as discussed in this week's podcast, you'll also improve your health, reduce your risk of disease, improve your quality of life and reduce your risk of dying early, through the adoption of healthy eating in later life (i.e. over the age of 65). So, what parts of your diet do you need to focus on as you age? Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the science to find out. Dairy products are made from cow's milk. Cow's milk contains approximately 87% water, 4.6% lactose (carbohydrate), 3.4% protein, 0.8% minerals (e.g. calcium, magnesium, potassium) and 0.1% vitamins. It's also a source of fat (4.2%) which is predominantly saturated and consequently it's one of the biggest contributors to saturated fat in our diet. In fact, it contributes to approximately one-fifth of total saturated fat intake consumed which is where the potential problem lies. Because one of the biggest risk factors for heart disease is saturated fat intake as it increases our bad cholesterol level (otherwise known as our LDL or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol). When it comes to weight loss supplements and pills, there's no shortage of them on the market. These are products that you can buy off the shelf in a pharmacy, supermarket and even some convenience stores. However, the biggest issue is that unlike pharmaceutical drugs, evidence for a weight loss pills safety and how effective it is, is not required before it hits the market. The owners of these supplements are only required to hold, but not necessarily produce, evidence substantiating their claims. Join Dr Nick as he takes you on a deep dive into the literature to find out which pills actually do what they say. Hear how to build a culture that values men and women  There are times when you are fortunate to meet exceptional women. Kim Graham Lee is one wonderful woman who is moving in a very important direction — how to build allyship for men and women. Kim is the CEO of Integrating Women Leaders (IWL) which is joining with Women Business Collaborative, of which I am a member, to conduct the first nationally-focused study to measure the practice of allyship with women in corporate America today. The primary focus of IWL's 2022 benchmark study is to take stock of where we are in building better cultures where men and women can support each other. This is truly groundbreaking...please plan to listen. Watch and listen to our conversation here When women are in leadership roles, companies do better Yet for women to move into corporate leadership roles is often a challenge. Women do not need to be “fixed.” Rather, they need business environments where they can bring their “whole selves” into the workplace, and find a culture where they are respected, heard and followed. This podcast will tell you more about the research that's underway and how you can join in the project. If you want your company to participate, that's fantastic. You just need to provide a sample of 100 people (50 men and 50 women). To start the survey, click on the image below. You'll find that you can learn a great deal about your organization and how your culture is fostering a place where men and women work together to build better, or not. How are you creating a place for men to be allies of women? You can also take the survey as an individual.  The results will be made available June 9, 2022 at the 2022 IWL Women's Leadership Conference. For more information, check out IWL's website: www.iwlfoundation.org. Decentering whiteness and white comfort at this time of the year is crucial for any educator but especially those who tout their anti-racist identity. Many of us are taught that there is a Villain, Victim, and a Hero in every story. White people have been taught our whole lives that they are the heroes, and if they can’t be the heroes then they are the victims. White allies need to be comfortable accepting that they are not the heroes in the antiracism story and that in fact, they have been the villains to the BIPOC experience for centuries. White people need to actively work to not center whiteness or white comfort. Our EQ this week: How can white women use their privilege to disrupt the culture of passive aggressive behavior and whitesplaining/mansplaining that emerge in many professional workplaces?Episode Disclaimer: If any of the stories or examples in this episode seem familiar, it’s purely accidental, coincidental, and unintentional. Join Hope and Annie as they discuss the ways in which white women engage in passive aggressive communication. These IWLs rehash an amazing video by MTV's Decoded White People Whitesplain Whitesplaining and Hope learns a new word-- hepeating. As you listen, you'll certainly think of your own experiences with passive aggressive forms of workplace communication. Pop Critical Theory:Today’s pop critical theory comes from the delightful intersection of sociology and linguistics - word blending. White women love word blends as much as your one quirky uncle loves puns. The IWL’s favorite word blend is obviously brunch - that’s breakfast plus lunch, natch - but we won’t wax poetic about waffles on THIS episode. The practice of word blending has brought us such gems as mansplaining and whitesplaining, two terms that are invaluable in our quest to explain the nuance of interpersonal and professional communication in the workplace. We have to give credit where credit is due - Rebecca Solnit coined “mansplaining” in her seminal essay-turned-book, Men Explain Things to Me.Timeless or Terrible: Trunk ShowsStella & DotTupperwareTea LightCabi (buy from our friend!)Trades of Hope (buy from our friend!)10,000 Villages Do Your Fudging Homework:Hope: Tom Rademacher’s post Can We Talk About How Many White Women There Are in Schools and his interview with me.Annie: Read up on “cross-cultural communication” theory. This episode of IWL is brought to you by cardigans, the uniform staple of interchangeable white ladies everywhere. Today’s essential question: what’s an IWL and why does it matter?Annie & Hope discuss where the term “Interchangeable White Lady” comes from and what the challenge is for white female teachers working with diverse students. The term original defined as “smiling, 20-something in her Target cardigan standing in front of a Smartboard” in Hope’s blog post The Interchangeable White Lady: An Introduction. In actuality, this label refers to the way students view their teachers. The concept was created in the context that 80% of educators are white women, teaching students of color (stats vary depending on source). Student perception is key. Relationships are crucial. White female teachers need to consider how students perceive them and accept the challenge this creates. It's a challenge to:To teach in a culturally responsive way based on the students before us.To view our instruction through the lens of traditionally marginalized youth. To distinguish ourselves as allies in the fight against institutional racism as we equip young men and women through the power of education.Annie explains her own reactions to being an IWL. Paraphrases Roxanne Gay’s idea that you don’t need to apologize for being born white or wealthy, but to acknowledge how those traits are favored in society and how they make your movement through life different and often easier (and how you should use that privilege to help others move more easily). Annie also shared her deep, fangirl-like appreciation for the illustrious and fabulous Mary Yu.Timeless or Terrible: Annie and Hope weigh in on the staples of interchangeable white women everywhere.
