Doctors Lisa and Sara are joined by GP and Medical Educator Dr Alan Ng, working in Canada. We discuss what Balint groups are, starting from who Balint was. We go through the structure of a Balint session and why they exist in the form they do. We discuss the advantages to both Doctors and their patients of discussing cases within a Balint group and being part of a group. Discussions can help us gain a deeper understanding of the doctor-patient relationship and discover more about the dynamics and causes of our stresses in particular cases. You can use these podcasts as part of your CPD - we don't do certificates but they still count :) Useful resources: UK Balint Society: https://balintsociety.org.uk/ American Balint Society: www.americanbalintsociety.org International Balint Federation: www.balintinternational.com Balint, Michael. You may never hear more inspiring, humbling, and challenging words on illness, its purpose, and the best way we can face it. This excerpt from "Wounded by Love" exhibits his insatiable love for Christ, his wounded yet healed heart. St. Porphyrios knew about suffering with illness both by personal experience and his many years as a hospital chaplain in Athens. The holy Elder suffered from the following illnesses: myocardial infarction (anterior diaphragm with lateral ischaemia), chronic kidney disease, duodenal ulcer (with repeated perforations), operated cataract (loss of lens and blindness), herpes zoster (shingles) on the face, staphylococcus dermatitis on the hand, inguinal hernia (frequently strangulated), chronic bronchitis and cancer of the pituitary gland. Cf. Dr. Georgios Papazachou in an article in the periodical Synaxis, 41 (Jan–Mar) 1992, 93. This reading is from "Wounded by Love: The Life and the Witness of Saint Porphyrios", pp. 224-231 -READ the text here: http://orthodoxinfo.com/praxis/elderporphyrios_illness.aspx -BUY Wounded by Love here: https://www.holycross.org/products/wounded-by-love-the-life-and-the-wisdom-of-elder-porphyrios -FIND an Orthodox parish and monastery near you: https://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ _______ St. Porphyrios teaches: I thank God for granting me many illnesses. I often say to Him: ‘My Christ, Your love knows no limits!' That's why I do not pray for God to make me well. I pray for Him to make me good. I'm certain that God knows that I am in pain. But I pray for my soul, for God to forgive my transgressions. I didn't want to think about hell and about tollgates. I didn't remember my sins, although I had many. I set them aside. I remembered only the love of God and was glad. And I made entreaty, "O my God, for the sake of your love, may I also be there. But if on account of my sins I must go to hell, may your love place me wherever it wishes. It is sufficient for me to be with You." We benefit greatly from our illnesses, as long as we endure them without complaint and glorify God, asking for His mercy. When we become ill, the important thing is not that we don't take medicines or that we go and pray to Saint Nektarios. We need also to know the other secret, namely, to struggle to acquire the grace of God. This is the secret. Grace will teach us all the other things, namely, how to abandon ourselves to Christ. That is, we ignore the illness, we do not think about it, we think about Christ, simply, imperceptibly and selflessly and God works His miracle for the good of our soul. Just as we say in the Divine Liturgy, "we commend all our life to Christ our God." _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. Singapore stocks fell at the opening bell this morning, tracking losses in global markets amid worries over geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. In early trade, the Straits Times Index (STI) fell 0.3 per cent to 3,175.63 points after 39.3 million securities changed hands in the broader market. In terms of companies to watch, Singapore Airlines, after the national carrier and its low-cost arm Scoot together moved 3.3 million passengers in March, up 20.7 per cent from the previous year. Elsewhere from more on TSMC's earnings to China's Q1 GDP numbers, more corporate and international headlines remain in focus. Glad to unpack the developments with James Cheo, Chief Investment Officer, Southeast Asia and India at HSBC Global Private Banking and Wealth.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this cross-specialty episode of BackTable OBGYN, Dr. Amy Park chats with Dr. Jose Silva, a board certified urologist and co-host of BackTable Urology, about the workup, counseling, and management of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. --- SHOW NOTES The co-hosts begin by briefly discussing the workup for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Dr. Park identifies common symptoms of prolapse and special exams (e.g. Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification System or POP-Q and urodynamics) that may be utilized for initial evaluation. She then explains the clinical indications for treatment of isolated POP, in addition to POP with concomitant urinary incontinence. Drs. Park and Silva then transitioned to cover the management of urinary incontinence. The two co-hosts reveal the benefits of pelvic floor physical therapy and other conservative management options, such as core-centric exercises and weight loss. In length, they elaborate on the benefits and takeaways of using sling procedures versus urethral bulking agents (e.g. Bulkamid). When discussing these topics, the co-hosts bring to light the possible differences in approach between Urogynecologists and Urologists. In regard to urethral bulking agents for treatment of urinary incontinence, Drs. Park and Silva highlight the potential role for stem cell injections. In addition, Dr. Park provides a tip to maximize patient comfort during in-office periurethral injections for urethral bulking. When focusing on sling procedures, Dr. Park highlights her preferred approach and encourages listeners to become proficient in the approach of their choosing. Lastly, they describe their approaches to treatment of stress urinary incontinence. In their discussion, Drs. Park and Silva consider factors such as patient age, desire for future fertility, and pregnancy. When wrapping up the episode, Dr. Park emphasizes the importance of patient counseling when it comes to management of these conditions, as well as practicing shared decision making to determine the best next steps for her patients. --- RESOURCES Nager CW, et al. We're replaying some of our favorite episodes from the back catalog of the Holistic Herbalism Podcast. In this one, originally aired as episode 142 on 11/6/2020, we highlight four of our favorite fungi: shiitake, maitake, reishi, & lion's mane.Essentially all medicinal mushrooms share some features of interest herbalists. Famously, they can modulate immune responses – boosting immune surveillance and efficiency, while reducing excessive inflammatory or autoimmune expressions. Some mushrooms can also have adaptogenic activity, improving our endurance, resilience, and fluidity of response to stressors. And some mushrooms (more than you might expect, actually) can even help regenerate damaged or diseased nerve tissue, and protect the nervous system. Sounds pretty good, right? Episode 42: In this episode, host Angie Gust talks about the benefits of oil pulling. Oil pulling is a detox practice which originated in India over 3000 years ago. The oil is ‘pulled' and forced in between all the teeth by swishing it all around the mouth. Then you spit it out and brush. You don't swallow it. Oil pulling is believed to help in the excretion of toxic heavy metals by saliva. Turning to the environment, I know we are all so happy that after long last, in August, the government dedicated money -369 billion in climate and energy investments --to addressing climate change. Three major analyses done to date project a 40% reduction in American emissions, compared to a baseline of 2005 levels. This would cut about a billion tons of carbon a year by 2030 - a little more than halfway from where we are now to where we've promised to be. The bill is good but we are still left short of our goal. We have to keep advocating, working, and innovating. We can get there! References Asokan S, Emmadi P, Chamundeswari R. “the direct nature of the experiment” [BRUC] It's the third week of the month, and that means it's time for our Exotic Animals feature! When you hear "rat" anywhere near the Sherlock Holmes stories, there are three possible conclusions: the Giant Rat of Sumatra, Ballarat, or... Lab rats, which is our topic of discussion. While lab rats aren't literally mentioned in the Canon, there are some figurative ones. What were they? We look at those, plus the history of animal experimentation in medicine. It's just a Trifle. Oh, and check this out: we have a bonus audio track just for our Patreon supporters. Become one today to unlock it. Have you left us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts yet? As the War of Independence approached its conclusion another conflict was taking shape; that between Michael Collins and Cathal Brugha. Most often Brugha is castigated as petty, bitter and jealous, trying to knock down the man who was single handedly fighting off the British. The reality is that Brugha was unnerved by the power Collins possessed, alongside his leadership of a shadowy, secret organisation... In January 1920 a small group of young, oddly dressed, British ex-servicemen arrived in Ireland. They had been recruited to reinforce the ranks of the Royal Irish Constabulary and take on the Irish Republican Army. Their strange mix of military and police clothing was the result of a uniform shortage and the bemused Irish people quickly nicknamed them the Black and Tans. Sent to Ireland to restore law and order, they would some become famous throughout the world for their brutality and violence. References: D. M. From the summer of 1919 Michael Collins and the Squad waged a relentless Intelligence War, threatening and killing key members of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Rattled by the attempt to kill the Lord Lieutenant in December, British authorities responded in early 1920 by replacing the head of the Royal Irish Constabulary and putting a new man over G Division. The new head of the Directorate of Intelligence at the Home Office also diverted resources to combating Collins' intelligence network and for a time these almost proved fatal. Spies, traitors and informers had been at the heart of British policy in dealing with Irish rebellions since 1798. Early 1920 was a major test for the Republican movement, one that previous conspiracies had failed. References: Paddy Daly - BMH WS387 Tim Pat Coogan - “Michael Collins” T.
