Dive into the cutting-edge realm of neuromorphic computing with André van Schaik, a professor of electrical engineering at the Western Sydney University, and director of the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems, in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia In this episode of Eye on AI, André unveils the capabilities of DeepSouth, an innovative brain-scaled neuromorphic computing system designed to simulate up to 100 billion neurons in real time. Discover how DeepSouth leverages spiking neurons and synapses to process information more efficiently than traditional AI models, and how this technology could transform our understanding of brain computation and unlock new AI architectures. The conversation explores the unique hardware setup of DeepSouth, utilizing FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) for a flexible, reconfigurable approach that mimics the asynchronous and spiking communication of biological neurons. André discusses the initial testing phase focusing on balanced excitation-inhibition networks, reflecting common neural activities in the human cortex, and outlines the system's potential to facilitate large-scale simulations previously unachievable due to computational constraints. André's insights are invaluable for anyone interested in the intersection of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and computational technology. Ryan Lipynsky joins us this week. Likely, you now Ryan from killer bands like Unearthly Trance, The Howling Wind, Thralldom, Villains, Serpentine Path and a ton or others. Ryan is more recently a founding member of Reeking Aura, a band that I've been real stoked on since I first heard them last year. Their 2022 LP Blood and Bone Meal rates high on my best of 2022 and is somewhat of a supergroup featuring members who have done time in bands like Artificial Brain, Buckshot Facelift and Biolich. Intro: “All of the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Harvesting the Hatchet” – Reeking Aura

If you have pondered ways of testing your smarts against a computer, a game of chess will likely pop into your head. But some scientists decided to make things fun. They decided to use a 1970s video game called Pong, to test some real smarts. Think black and white screen, a paddle moving up and down, and a ball that bounces off the sides of the screen. Sounds odd? I mean, in this day and age, why not use an Xbox right? Here's the real clincher. The scientists did NOT test a real person's brain, while playing this. But they used a brain that has been grown in a petri dish. Vedanshi, a 10-year old from Bunts Sangha's S.M. Shetty International School & Junior College, Mumbai, explains this piece of science-fiction in simple and easy terms. Listen to the full episode to understand how this brain (a little less smart than that of a cockroach) has mastered the art of playing Pong - all by itself. Vedanshi does a real cool job of explaining artificial intelligence of an artificial brain. Metalheads!!! Gabe's pick for the month of June is an interesting journey into proggy technical death.
New York's Artificial Brain are somewhat of an anomaly in the death metal world. Sure they're rooted in death metal but in the blink of an eye can cover tech-death, progressive death, jazz, and noise like world class pros. Their debut Labyrinth Constellation was like stepping on a landmine of infinite sounds and follow up Infrared Horizon saw them branch out a bit and experiment with obtuse and jagged rhythms and melodies that absolutely should not go together but somehow it all just gelled. And now with their third full length, a self-titled one (Profound Lore Records), it seems they're out for blood. It's a bit more on the death metal nose but more angular and aggressive than before. Definitely one that should be on your radar. Buke recently sat down with guitarist Oleg Zalman to dig into the ethos of the new album and of the band and how it all came together. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Ep. 86 - Oleg Zalman (Artificial Brain) by Cali Death Podcast
Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 232 features an interview with Samuel Smith of Artificial Brain. Artificial Brain belong to a new generation of underground metal band that New York has become known for - one that combines speed, dissonance, melody, and stellar musicianship to create a sound that hearkens back to the classic death metal albums that emerged from the area, whilst simultaneously looking to the future (in both their progressive sensibility and science fiction themes). I spoke with bassist Samuel Smith about the sci-fi concepts that connect Artificial Brain's albums, and his thoughts about their music being labeled "dissonant death metal". We also discussed why their self-titled third album may sound more melodic than previous releases, and what the future holds for Artificial Brain. My thanks to Sam for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
We return to the altar of radness with a brilliantly diverse sack of heavy jams. Astronoid's dream thrash is an effervescent joy and Mothman knock your teeth down the back of your throat. The Artificial Brain drag you into a mind-altering wind tunnel. Sound like the perfect Friday night? Yeah thought so. Brutal News this week is absolutely stacked as hell. Is neuromorphic computing the only way we can actually achieve general artificial intelligence? Very likely yes, according to Gordon Wilson, CEO of Rain Neuromorphics, who is trying to recreate the human brain in hardware and "give machines all of the capabilities that we recognize in ourselves." Rain Neuromorphics has built a neuromorphic chip that is analog. In other words it does not simulate neural networks: it is a neural network in analog, not digital. It's a physical collection of neurons and synapses, as opposed to an abstraction of neurons and synapses. That means no ones and zeroes of traditional computing but voltages and currents that represent the mathematical operations you want to perform. Right now it's 1000X more energy efficient than existing neural networks, Wilson says, because it doesn't have to spend all those computing cycles simulating the brain. The circuit is the neural network, which leads to some extraordinary gains in both speed improvement and power reduction, according to Wilson. We have an interview with Nails drummer Taylor Young who also plays guitar in Twitching Tongues, plays in many other bands, and is also an accomplished producer. We started off with what we've been listening to including Artificial Brain, Ghost Iris, Extremity, Mantar, talked about two listener recommendation/requests including Slice the Cake's "Odyssey to the West" & While She Sleeps "You are We" & than answered a listener question of what we think about live albums and our favorite ones. We also listed each of our top 5 guest appearences and had a contest on who could name the song/guest appearence first. Stay tuned for the winner and play along! This week we talk mainly about Woe's show in Hamburg being cancelled due to them sharing a stage with Inquisition, who organizers think is NSBM. That's a cool discussion, but for those of you who just want the news, I guess we have some stuff along those lines as well. New music and stuff from Exist, Suffocation, Dragonforce, Shadow of Intent, Jamiroquai, Artificial Brain, Tombs, Bestia Arcana. Also the mini-feud between ESP guitars and Linkin Park, and hologram Ronnie James Dio being a thing. Also the new Sikth album. Then cool people time on a bunch of TV and movie stuff. Prison Break, Ryan Reynolds, Cillian Murphy and more.
Métalcoolique no. 12 - Édition du 14 avril 2017. C'est Vendredi Saint, pourquoi ne pas le souligner avec de la musique sacrée! Carême ou pas, ici on ne se prive de rien et on se paie des nouveautés de Artificial Brain, Ferndal, Foreseen et plus. The post Balado : Émission du 14 avril 2017 appeared first on Métalcoolique.
Rough week! We have some news to discuss, and Ben of Hadal Maw to interview, but technical issues keep getting in the way. Also, bonus points if you can tell me what artist the episode title is referencing. Beyond having a neat conversation with Ben about the Australian scene and his writing process, we discuss some news with Eden, mainly new music from No Sin Evades His Gaze, Ulsect, The Acacia Strain, Artificial Brain, Alpha Brutal, Orm and Slugdge. Also Violet Cold got signed, maybe? Enjoy.
Eden has abandoned us yet again, so, statistically speaking, we'll probably have Ahmed or Nick with us this week. I guess you'll have to guess whom'st'd've!? We talk about some news/drama, new releases, and mainstream-metal interactions. Namely Dallas Toler-Wade leaving Nile and getting replaced with Brian of Enthean. Then Cynic drama following the recent release of their demo tapes. Then some new music. Galactic Empire (and Anchorhead), Dodecahedron, Artificial Brain, Body Count, Linkin Park, Reaping Asmodeia, Ogarya, John Frum, Born of Osiris. Of course we talk about the dude singing Necrophagist at Canadian Voice. And the Grammys, namely Megadeth and Metallica. Post-recording note: New Nile lineup is awesome. I'm stoked now. That fist bump was amazing.

Is it possible to modify the brain through exercise, implants or even electricity?
Despite decades of intense research, we still know very little about how the human brain actually functions.
Here is the 32nd installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Shawn Haché of Mitochondrion. The interview took place at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, where Mitochondrion played a show with Phobocosm, Auroch, and Artificial Brain (featured on the last podcast, and interviewed the same night). Mitochondrion is a band that has both fascinated and bewildered me since I first heard them back in 2011. Due to the esoteric and challenging nature of their music, I have to admit I was fairly apprehensive about approaching them; of course, as is often the case, they couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. We talked about the recent split release with Auroch, the status of the next Mitochondrion album, and the band's approach to writing music. My thanks again to Shawn for taking the time to talk to me, and to you for listening. Here is the 31st installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring interviews with Black Fast's Aaron Akin, Artificial Brain's William Smith, and Topsy and Holm of Sanitys Dawn. These were recorded over three different nights during three different shows at Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Black Fast shared a bill with Hate Eternal and Vital Remains, and kicked major ass. I talked to their frontman/guitarist Aaron about the history of the band, their insane touring schedule, and what they'll be up to when the tour wraps up. Artificial Brain were a last minute replacement for Gath Šmânê as openers for Mitochondrion, Phobocosm and Auroch. I'd never officially met William before, but we have a lot of friends in common in the NY scene, including members of Grey Skies Fallen and his other band Buckshot Facelift. He's a hell of a frontman and a sweetheart of a guy. We talked about his onstage persona "Big Baby Brain" and the upcoming Artificial Brain album, as well as what Buckshot is up to. Sanitys Dawn were part of an insane six band Catbomb show that was headlined by the reunited Despise You. Their singer Topsy spotted me taking photos from the side of the stage and proceeded to literally get in my face. He made an impression, to say the least, and I figured that was as good a reason as any to put him and his drummer Holm on the podcast. At the end of our conversation, they said it was the first interview they'd done in 6 years. I promised them that as soon as I got back to Malaysia I'd get in touch with them for a real interview. Look for that to happen soon...ish. My thanks to everyone who took the time to talk to me, and to you for listening. Deep learning machine technology has rapidly developed over the past five years due in part to a variety of actors such as: better technology, convolutional net algorithms, rectified linear units, and a relatively new learning strategy called "dropout" in which hidden unit feature detectors are temporarily deleted during the learning process. This article introduces and discusses the concept of "dropout" to support deep learning performance and makes connections of the "dropout" concept to concepts of regularization and model averaging.
