In July of 2002, former NBA star Bison Dele (Daily), his girlfriend Serena Karlan, and a boat captain named Bertrand Saldo vanished while sailing the South Pacific Ocean. The only person to return from the trip was Bison's older brother, Miles. When Miles arrived alone in Tahiti, the boat had been repainted and renamed. Authorities suspected Miles had murdered the other three while at sea so that he could assume his brother's identity, but with no bodies ever found and with Miles' death in 2002, the fate of Bison and his companions remains a mystery to this day.  Thank you to this week's sponsors! President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra will attend the inauguration ceremony of Chancay Port via video, expecting to further promote the connectivity of Latin America and boost regional development and integration.Xi revealed the information in a signed article published on Thursday in Peruvian media outlet El Peruano as he was set to start his state visit to the country and attend the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima.Located about 78 kilometers north of Lima, Chancay is a natural deep-water port. It is not only an important project under Belt and Road cooperation between Beijing and Lima, but also will be the first smart port in South America.Once in operation, it will become a major gateway to the oceans and a crucial hub in the South Pacific Ocean region, helping to redistribute cargo from countries such as Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Paraguay.According to Xi, the first phase of the project, when completed, will reduce the sea shipping time from Peru to China to 23 days, thus cutting logistics costs by at least 20 percent. It is expected to generate $4.5 billion in annual revenue for Peru and directly create more than 8,000 jobs. The completion of Chancay Port will enable Peru to put in place a multidimensional, diverse and efficient network of connectivity spanning from coast to inland, from Peru to Latin America and farther on to the Caribbean, Xi said in the article. The port also will focus on fulfilling its social responsibility for rescuing and protecting wild animals and improving the ecological environment, he said."It is thus very important that we work together to ensure the success of Chancay Port from construction through operation, so that the route from Chancay to Shanghai will lead China, Peru and Latin America to common development and prosperity," he noted. The president said in his article that China is also ready to launch in Peru more "small and beautiful" livelihood cooperation projects, open more Luban Workshops and centers for Chinese language and professional skills, and strengthen cooperation on vocational education. The Luban Workshop is a Chinese vocational training program that aims to nurture workers around the world who are highly skillful, professional and innovative."We will encourage Chinese companies to create more jobs and fulfill their social responsibilities in Peru, making our paisano friendship more tangible and beneficial," he said, noting that Peruvians endearingly refer to the Chinese people as paisano.China has been Peru's largest trading partner and largest export market for 10 consecutive years. Last year, Peru's exports to China accounted for 36 percent of its total exports, and Chinese businesses have an investment stock of about $30 billion in Peru. The Las Bambas copper mine, a project with investment from Chinese enterprises, contributes to about 1 percent of Peru's GDP, creating tens of thousands of job opportunities, Xi noted. In addition, Saul Garrido Rosillo Hospital in Tumbes, a project undertaken by a Chinese enterprise, will serve over 100,000 local residents, and a water project in three districts of Lima will enable more than 400,000 people to have access to clean water and sanitation services, he said.Peru is the first Latin American country to sign a free trade agreement package with China, and it is among the first in Latin America to participate in cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. This is Xi's second visit to Peru since taking office as president. In June, he received Boluarte, who made a state visit to China.Calling Peru a "neighbor" of China across the Pacific Ocean, Xi said that every time he has gone to the country, he has been overwhelmed by the friendly sentiments of the Peruvian people toward the Chinese people.Peru's Congress recently declared Feb 1 as Peru-China Fraternity Day, and Chinese restaurants in Peru are called chifa, which is similar to the Chinese word chifan, meaning dining. This bond of friendship and affection is rooted in the wisdom of their ancient civilizations, and has become stronger through China-Peru win-win cooperation, he said.Xi called on the two countries to build on the bilateral traditional friendship to expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas.Peru was one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with China, and the relationship was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2013.Xi said that bilateral ties have grown stronger, and the two countries' results-oriented cooperation has been fruitful, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples.'Trustworthy friend'In fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, China sent a team of medical experts to Peru and provided vaccines and other medical supplies to the best of its ability, Xi said."We have proved through concrete actions that China is a trustworthy friend that Peru can rely on in crucial moments," he said. The president also called on the two nations to strengthen exchange and cooperation in culture, arts, education, scientific research, tourism, youth, cultural heritage protection, archaeology and other areas. He also urged more measures by the two sides to facilitate personnel exchanges to garner greater public support for bilateral relations.Regarding the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, Xi said that China firmly supports Peru's presidency of APEC and will work closely with the Latin American country to ensure a successful and productive meeting.'Lima Imprint'Beijing is ready to work with Lima to enhance Asia-Pacific cooperation with a "Lima Imprint" and make new contributions to building an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future, Xi said. This will be the third time that Peru hosts the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting after 2008 and 2016.The themes of the three meetings, from "A New Commitment to Asia-Pacific Development" to "Quality Growth and Human Development", and this year's "Empower, Include, Grow", attest to Peru's firm resolve to promote an open Asia-Pacific economy and world economic growth, Xi said. They also represent a strong "Lima Voice" for openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, he added.China is ready to join Peru in championing true multilateralism, and in promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, Xi said.Beijing would also like to work with Lima to implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and build together a community with a shared future for mankind, he added.

Using all modes on the 4m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 8th of August 2024 Well, so much for the experts! NOAA predicted that the solar flux index would fall last week when it increased to a whopping 303 on Thursday the 8th. But this high solar flux number was accompanied by a strong risk of solar flares, so it was not all plain sailing. We have had 15 M-class and two X-class solar flare events over the past three days and the threat remains high. Coronal mass ejection activity on Wednesday resulted in NOAA and the Space Weather Prediction Centre warning of possible moderate G2 geomagnetic storming towards the later part of week ending the 11th of August. This could see the Kp index rise and the maximum usable frequency fall. Hopefully, conditions will improve after the weekend. Last week was a good one for HF propagation with a high solar flux index and low Kp index. The 10m band was open to Brazil in the late afternoon, and this appeared to be F2-layer propagation and not multi-hop Sporadic-E. Meanwhile, the 15m band has perhaps been the DX band of choice with long openings to the Far East, at least on FT8, and North America at the same time. HF conditions should also improve as we move into September, but more on that closer to the time. Attention now shifts to N5J on Jarvis Island, an uninhabited 4.5-kilometre-squared coral island in the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and the Cook Islands. The DXpedition is active on all bands and their website at Jarvisisland2024.com can provide you with personalised propagation forecasts – let us know if you work them. Using Proppy at soundbytes.asia or VOAcap at voacap.com, shows that 20, 17 and 15m  short-path seem to offer the best chance of working the DXpedition, with morning openings from around 0600 to 1000UTC. There is also a potential long-path opening between 1800 and 2000 UTC, with a possibility of the 10m band at 1900 UTC. Both are near polar paths and may be adversely affected by a high Kp index. CDXC members with good stations have already reported QSOs with N5J on the 17m band using FT8. Next week, NOAA predicts the solar flux index will be in the range of 185 to 240. Geomagnetic conditions will depend on whether we have more solar flares and coronal mass ejections, and the chance of those remains high. An Earth-facing coronal mass ejection could send the Kp index soaring, and that will no doubt lead to reduced maximum useable frequencies and noisy bands. So, fingers crossed for more quiet geomagnetic conditions and low Kp indices! And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The summer tries to deliver but, overall, the pattern has a rather unsettled flavour to it for the coming week. On the positive side, we see a transient area of high pressure crossing southern Britain over this weekend, ending today the 11th. This could give some Tropo conditions but, after this, the Atlantic westerly flow brings a succession of fronts and showers to most areas. In terms of propagation, this suggests that rain scatter will have the best of it in the week ahead. The Sporadic-E season remains a good fallback and surprised us in East Anglia mid-morning on Tuesday the 6th of August with 144MHz Sporadic-E propagation to YU, HA, 9A and LZ moving around towards Italy as the opening progressed. All were workable with 100W and a white stick antenna on FT8. For the coming week, the jet stream activity will probably start by favouring paths to Scandinavia and the Baltic. Later in the week, a new jet stream will drive southeast into Iberia, opening up chances for paths to EA and CT. The Perseids meteor shower this week will provide welcome new fuel for Sporadic-E and, as a result, like most years, we'll see openings into the first week of September. The meteor scatter highlight is the Perseids meteor shower, which peaks on Monday and Tuesday. So, there are plenty of opportunities to try a new mode or fill in some missing grid squares if you are already involved in meteor scatter. Many websites explain what it's all about, but one to start you off is g7rdx.co.uk  Also, try looking for videos of meteor activity on SDR radios to get an idea of what it all sounds like. The solar conditions lately have been rather disturbed. It would not be surprising if the Kp index was to suggest that aurora could be a possibility if it gets to 5 or higher. Moon declination is negative and reaches minimum on Thursday the 15th, which means there will be short Moon visibility windows and low peak elevation. Path losses will decrease throughout the week and 144MHz sky noise is low over the weekend, but climbing to reach a high peak of over 3200 Kelvin on the 15th.  And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Corruption in the Pacific Islands is a major issue that needs to be addressed, as it undermines national security and allows China to gain influence in the region. The Pacific region is strategically significant, and control over the islands and maritime routes is crucial for both the US and China.Maritime domain enforcement is essential to protect the rights and interests of the Pacific Islands and to counter illegal activities by China. The US should provide support to the Pacific Islands in terms of intelligence sharing, investigations, and strengthening their legal systems to combat corruption and defend their communities. The US needs to increase its presence and engagement in the Pacific Islands to counter China's influence and protect its own interests in the region.Sound Bites:"If you have a Pacific centered map, you know, the Indo-Pacific is going to be the, to the 21st century, what the Atlantic was to the 20th century.""China's comprehensive national power mentality seems to have actually translated into action in the way that they interact with the region.""China's approach is not just a kind of zero-sum game. They will go into the other side loses more.""You are sending in the mercy or Guard cut or whatever corruption that's happening on the ground is what's feeding out into the maritime environment, the air environment, and the entire national security bubble and corroding it.""We should have an unlimited prosecution and investigation budget. In today's episode I'm speaking with Titouan Bernicot, the founder & CEO of Coral Gardeners. He grew up on a pearl farm in French Polynesia, in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. Whenever I'm on a call with him I'm convinced he's using one of those fake beach backgrounds but then remember it's actually a real backdrop. We even got interrupted by dolphins swimming past the Coral Gardeners headquarters while recording this conversation…Titouan says that coral reefs gave him everything in his life, from the waves he surfs to the food he eats and the oxygen he breathes. So in 2017, at only 18 years old, he started Coral Gardeners to restore the reefs and plant corals. Together with his team he has already planted over 100,000 corals in French Polynesia and they have set the goal for themselves to plant one MILLION corals by 2025, all around the world.I met him at the World Oceans Day event in New York last year and was so impressed by his positive energy and contagious hope. He knows what's at stake but rather than letting the state of the world get him down, he turns this into meaningful action, getting people and organisations such as Rolex, Prada, Warner Bros and many more from all around the globe to join the movement and help restore healthy ocean ecosystems.Want to dive deeper?Adopt a coral - https://coralgardeners.org/products/adopt-a-coralFollow Coral Gardeners on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/coralgardenersCome say hi!Titouan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/toutiess/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. 第2013期:Evidence of Crash with Another Planet under Earth Surface

Scientists have recognized since the 1970s that there are two large, mysterious blobs in the deepest part of Earth's mantle. 自 20 世纪 70 年代以来,科学家们已经认识到,在地幔最深处有两个巨大的神秘斑点。 One of the masses is under Africa and the other under the South Pacific Ocean. 其中一处位于非洲下方,另一处位于南太平洋下方。 Recent research suggests these masses, which are denser than the material surrounding them, might be from a huge crash early in our planet's history. 最近的研究表明,这些比周围物质密度更大的质量可能来自地球历史早期的一次巨大碰撞。 Researchers recently said the crash between Earth and a Mars-sized object called Theia might have created the moon. 研究人员最近表示,地球与火星大小的忒伊亚天体之间的碰撞可能创造了月球。Recent research suggests the event happened more than 4.46 billion years ago. Pieces of Theia, however, might have remained inside Earth, sinking to an area just above our planet's hot core of iron and nickel. 最近的研究表明,这一事件发生在 44.6 亿年前。然而,忒伊亚的碎片可能仍留在地球内部,沉入地球由铁和镍组成的炽热核心上方的区域。 Researchers created computer simulations to study their theory of the event. Based on these simulations, they proposed that most of Theia was absorbed into Earth, forming the two masses, while the remaining pieces formed the moon.研究人员创建了计算机模拟来研究他们对该事件的理论。根据这些模拟,他们提出,忒伊亚的大部分被地球吸收,形成了两个质量块,而其余的碎片则形成了月球。Qian Yuan is a geophysicist at Caltech and the lead writer of the study that was published recently in Nature. 钱源是加州理工学院的地球物理学家,也是最近发表在《自然》杂志上的这项研究的主要作者。 "The bottoms of these blobs are 2,900 kilometers below our feet. The two blobs are about 2 percent of Earth's mass. They were detected by seismology as seismic waves travel slower within these two regions compared to the surrounding mantle. Each of the blobs are twice the mass of the whole moon. So, the blobs are massive," Yuan said. “这些斑点的底部距离我们脚下 2,900 公里。这两个斑点约占地球质量的 2%。地震学检测到它们是因为地震波在这两个区域内的传播速度比周围的地幔慢。每个斑点都是地球质量的两倍。整个月球的质量。所以,这些斑点是巨大的,”袁说。 If the theory is correct, these two masses would represent evidence of the possible moon-forming crash. 如果这个理论是正确的,这两个质量将代表可能的月球形成碰撞的证据。 Caltech professor and study co-writer Paul Asimow said there has not been agreement "on whether we can find evidence for this event not just in the moon but also in some observable property of the modern Earth."加州理工学院教授兼研究报告合著者保罗·阿西莫表示,“对于我们是否不仅能在月球上,而且还能在现代地球的一些可观测特性中找到这一事件的证据”,目前尚未达成一致。 The two masses, Asimow added, are the biggest difference "in Earth structure from a simple layered planet." 阿西莫补充说,这两个质量是“地球结构与简单层状行星”的最大区别。 Study co-writer Hongping Deng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Astronomical Observatory said, "It is incredible because we can uncover relics of another planet - Theia - if we dig deep enough in Earth's mantle." 该研究的共同作者、中国科学院上海天文台的邓红平说:“这令人难以置信,因为如果我们在地幔中挖掘得足够深,我们就能发现另一颗行星——忒伊亚的遗迹。”The increased density of the masses is believed to come from their high level of iron. Moon rocks also contain high iron levels. So, the researchers think it would make sense if they came from the same place: Theia. 据信,群众密度的增加是由于其铁含量高。月球岩石中的铁含量也很高。因此,研究人员认为,如果他们来自同一个地方:忒伊亚,那就有意义了。 The moon, which orbits Earth at an average distance of about 385,000 km, has a diameter of about 3,475 km, a bit more than a quarter of our planet's diameter. 月球绕地球运行的平均距离约为 385,000 公里,直径约为 3,475 公里,略大于地球直径的四分之一。 Asimow said that, if the theory is correct, some volcanic rocks that reach Earth's surface might provide pieces of Theia. 阿西莫说,如果这个理论是正确的,一些到达地球表面的火山岩可能会提供忒伊亚碎片。 "If our model is correct, the blobs should have isotopes - trace elements - that are similar to the lunar mantle rocks, which can be tested in future lunar missions," Yuan said. 袁说:“如果我们的模型正确,这些斑点应该含有与月幔岩石类似的同位素(微量元素),可以在未来的月球任务中进行测试。” Gaining a greater understanding of the hypothesized giant impact could provide information concerning the evolution of Earth and other rocky planets in our solar system and beyond it. 更好地了解假设的巨大撞击可以提供有关地球和太阳系内外其他岩石行星演化的信息。 "Earth is still the only confirmed habitable planet, and we do not know why," Yuan said. He added the crash set the early conditions for Earth's development and said: "Studying its consequences may help us to figure out why Earth is different than other rocky planets." “地球仍然是唯一被确认的宜居行星,我们不知道为什么,”袁说。他补充说,这次撞击为地球的发展奠定了早期条件,并表示:“研究其后果可能有助于我们弄清楚为什么地球与其他岩石行星不同。”

Stations entering the four-hour contest may also enter the two-hour contest. On Thursday the 12th of October the 50MHz UK Activity Contest runs from 1900 to 2130UTC. Using all modes on the 6m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.  Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 5th of October 2023 Last week progressed quite well from a solar point of view, at least until the morning of Thursday the 5th when the Kp index rose to five. But the Kp high was short-lived and only lasted for one three-hour reporting period. Until this point, it had been around one to three all week, which meant the ionosphere had a chance to settle and build. As a result, we saw daytime MUFs over a 3,000km path rise well above 28MHz. This was partly due to the seasonal change, which sees daytime MUFs generally rise as we head towards autumn. Similarly, we are seeing nighttime MUFs declining as we progress through October. The times of seeing the 17 and 20m bands open all night are probably behind us now and they won't be back until next summer! The Solar Flux Index held up quite well last week, peaking at 161 on the 1st of October, before declining slightly to 155 by Thursday the 5th. Propagation-wise, we are really starting to benefit from the autumnal changes. Stations worked from the UK recently include the 5W0LM DXpedition to Samoa on 20m CW. The team expects to be on air until the 14th of October. The big one this autumn is the W8S DXpedition to Swains Island, a remote coral atoll in the Tokelau Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. We will look at the propagation prospects for working W8S in the GB2RS News next week. Next week, NOAA predicts that the Solar Flux Index will remain in the 160s. It also predicts a Kp index of two all week. But, with eight active regions on the Sun at present, the risk of a solar flare and/or Coronal Mass Ejection remains high. So, don't be surprised if we see the Kp index head skywards again, at times, with a reduction in the maximum useable frequency. And finally, the good news is that the Chilton Digisonde is now back in action. You can select it, as well as Dourbes, at propquest.co.uk And now the VHF and up propagation news This first weekend of October could be good for meteor scatter with the peak of the October Draconids tonight, the 8th, into the 9th of October. It should also be quite a good period for Tropo as high pressure over the south provides enhanced paths across the continent to France and Germany. There may also be a path across Biscay to Spain or the Canaries and Azores. Along with fine and unusually warm weather, it should fit in well with the October 432MHz to 245GHz Contest which ends at 1400UTC today, the 8th. Hopefully, there will still be something left for the 432MHz FM Activity Contest and UK Activity Contest on Tuesday the 10th. On the evening of Wednesday the 5th, an aurora alert arrived, so clearly that's another mode to keep in mind. From around the 11th, we will find a trend towards more unsettled conditions with rain and showers and rather windy weather as low pressure takes charge. This will remove Tropo from the operating schedule but may give some rain scatter opportunities. For EME operators, Moon declination is just past maximum this coming weekend so, as the following week progresses, Moon elevation will fall from its high and Moon windows will shorten. With apogee on Tuesday the 10th of October, path losses are at, or around, their maximum. 144MHz sky noise is falling, reaching a minimum next Tuesday. The Sun and Moon are close in the sky on Saturday the 14th meaning high noise all weekend. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

People would trek out to the desert just to answer calls from random strangers or to make calls to friends and family, creating an unplanned and unconventional means of human connection in an unlikely location. The phone booth was eventually removed in 2000, but its memory lives on.The Underwater Post Office (Vanuatu):Located off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean is the world's first and only underwater post office. Visitors can don snorkeling gear and dive down to the underwater post office, which is about three meters underwater. They can then mail waterproof postcards to friends and family around the world. The concept was created to promote tourism in the region and has become a unique attraction for adventurous travelers looking to send mail from beneath the sea.The Kingdom of Talossa (United States):In 1979, a teenager named Robert Ben Madison from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, declared his bedroom an independent nation and named it the Kingdom of Talossa. He created a fictional language, culture, and government, and even printed his own currency. Over the years, Talossa gained a small online following, and more people began to join and participate in its unique micronation experiment. Despite its playful origins, Talossa developed into a full-fledged micronation with its own constitution, laws, and citizens. While not officially recognized by any government, the Kingdom of Talossa remains an example of how a creative idea can evolve into a quirky, self-contained community in the digital age.Podcast Website: https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-quick-tok-19-unbelievable-true-stories-from-around-the-world-2/Social Media:Threadshttps://threads.com/invitation/34520051596/RLLHXJPPFMTFXUHE5NSUT6OLMUSSLEJBUI227Z6DXCO2XVBOWQCK7N4UA to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastTik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22Check out the Free Online English Lessons YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. Abraham “Avi” Loeb, dubbed the alien hunter of Harvard, is an honored Israeli-American theoretical physicist who works on astrophysics and cosmology and is a professor at Harvard. In 2018, he suggested that alien space craft may be in the Solar System and used the interstellar object Oumuamua as an example, and in July 2021, Avi founded The Galileo Project for the Systematic Scientific Search for Evidence of Extraterrestrial Technological Artifacts. In January 2014, a 500-kilogram fireball was observed by the DOD where it was recorded as traveling faster than most meteors and ended up breaking up over the South Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea. Avi's team set out on a research boat called the Silver Star in late June 2023 looking for possible debris , & used a magnetic sled to excavate this debris from the ocean floor where the meteor hit. They found 50 tiny metallic balls called spherules that were made mostly of iron, and each is a fraction of a millimeter in size. He concluded that these metal pieces did not originate from Earth, and did not match any samples of the element found on Earth, leading him to speculate that this piece might be from outer space. On the second half we discussed some of our favorite action disaster movies involving either a meteor or aliens crashing on earth, including Deep Impact, Armageddon, Battleship and Slither. Reaching a maximum confirmed length of 29.9 meters (98 ft) and weighing up to 199 tonnes (196 long tons; 219 short tons), it is the largest animal known to have ever existed. The blue whale's long and slender body can be of various shades of greyish-blue dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath. Four subspecies are recognized: B. m. musculus in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, B. m. intermedia in the Southern Ocean, B. m. brevicauda (the pygmy blue whale) in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, B. m. indica in the Northern Indian Ocean. There is also a population in the waters off Chile that may constitute a fifth subspecies. In general, blue whale populations migrate between their summer feeding areas near the poles and their winter breeding grounds near the tropics. There is also evidence of year-round residencies, and partial or age/sex-based migration. Blue whales are filter feeders; their diet consists almost exclusively of krill. They are generally solitary or gather in small groups, and have no well-defined social structure other than mother-calf bonds. The fundamental frequency for blue whale vocalizations ranges from 8 to 25 Hz and the production of vocalizations may vary by region, season, behavior, and time of day. Orcas are their only natural predators. The blue whale was once abundant in nearly all the Earth's oceans until the end of the 19th century. It was hunted almost to the point of extinction by whalers until the International Whaling Commission banned all blue whale hunting in 1966. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed blue whales as Endangered as of 2018. It continues to face numerous man-made threats such as ship strikes, pollution, ocean noise and climate change.Be sure to use code: HERDSODA at drinkolipop.com and save 15% on all orders!

Right back with another one for the folks! On this episode we open with a couple unfortunate stories out of the Bay Area. First a school shooting that leaves 6 wounded and suspect(s) are still on the loose. We'll let you know why we're unsure about the number of shooters and what one parent had to say. Then a suspected rapist leads police on a chase before barricading himself in a Pleasant Hill department store for over 13 hours. The details of the story are still unclear but what is known will surprise you. Then a new island is discovered in the South Pacific Ocean after an underwater volcano erupts. As of now 8 acres is unclaimed and unnamed. We give our thoughts on what we would do and who we see actually doing it. 3 arrests have been made in connection to the murder of PNB Rock. A father and son duo carried out the murder and getaway, while the step-mother has been charged for accessory after the fact. The alleged shooter was a child. Prayers up for PNB and his family! Shakira is going to have to go to trial in the tax evasion case she's facing in Spain. Prosecutors are asking for 8 years. We discuss whether or not she will be paying a fee to stay free, or catching bodies at the prison talent show. And two stories out of Florida that are major causes of concern on two complete different levels. First we send love to the areas affected by Hurricane Ian. With death tolls estimated in the hundreds and photos of complete devastation the state seems to be at mother natures mercy. Then Tua Tagovailoa, star QB for the Miami Dolphins has his second “concussion” in less than a week. This time leaving the game on a stretcher. We talk about the decision to allow him to play following each scare and who may be on the hook for what could be a shortened career for a budding star. Plus you know we made our week 4 picks! Numerous novels, TV shows and as many as 5 movies- including the Hollywood classic starring Clarke Gable and Marlon Brando - have immortalised the story of the Mutiny on the Bounty in the popular imagination forever. The mutiny on the HMS Bounty occurred in the South Pacific Ocean on 28 April 1789. Disaffected crewmen, led by acting-Lieutenant Fletcher Christian, seized control of the ship from their captain, Lieutenant Bligh, and set him and eighteen loyalists adrift in a rowing boat. The mutineers settled on Tahiti and Pitcairn Island, while Bligh navigated more than 4,000 miles in the rowing boat to safety. and began the process of bringing the mutineers to justice.Direct descendent of lead mutineer Fletcher Christian, Harrison Christian joins Dan on the podcast to seperate the myth from the truth in this epic tale of a rebellious crew, a mammoth journey and a lost colony in the far-flung tropics of the Pacific Ocean. The legends started when William Bligh returned to Britain and immediately rewrote the facts of what happened to fit his narrative; novelists and film-writers have been doing the same ever since. The producer was Mariana Des Forges and the audio editor was Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store. Washington undertook a tour of the ex-colonies to talk to ordinary citizens about his new government, and to imbue in them the idea of being one thing—Americans. In the fall of 2018, Nathaniel Philbrick embarked on his own journey into what Washington called “the infant woody country” to see for himself what America had become in the 229 years since. Writing in a thoughtful first person about his own adventures with his wife, Melissa, and their dog, Dora, Philbrick follows Washington's presidential excursions: from Mount Vernon to the new capital in New York; a monthlong tour of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island; a venture onto Long Island and eventually across Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The narrative moves smoothly between the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries as we see the country through both Washington's and Philbrick's eyes.

She told her father that she wanted to be a cruise director when she grew up. His advice to her was that she could do anything she wanted, including captaining the ship. Since that time Captain Kate has been a pioneer and trailblazer, breaking the gender barrier in 2015 when Lutoff-Perlo named her to be the first — and still only — American female to captain a major cruise ship – Celebrity Summit. She moved to Celebrity Equinox before being appointed to helm the exquisite Celebrity Edge® in September 2019. On 8 March, 2020, McCue further cemented her place in the history books when she captained the history-making, barrier-breaking sailing on Celebrity Edge that comprised a cruise ship's first-ever all-female bridge and officer team. Captain Kate also led the Celebrity fleet – and the industry – back into operation when, on 26 June, 2021, Celebrity Edge became the first cruise ship to sail with guests from a U.S. port in more than a year due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.Celebrity Beyond will not only hold the title of the largest ship in the fleet, but the distinction as the brand's most luxurious vessel.Celebrity Beyond stands at 17 decks high and 21 meters longer than her innovative predecessors Celebrity Edge (2018) and Celebrity Apex (2020). Every element of Celebrity Beyond's look and feel has been carefully curated with newly imagined spaces and expanded versions of the brand's popular signature spaces, includingMajestic Princess Maiden Call to San Francisco is First Cruise Ship Visit Since Global Industry PausePrincess Cruises, celebrated its return to San Francisco with the maiden call of Majestic Princess, the first cruise ship to visit the City by the Bay since the industry global pause of operations. For the upcoming 2021-2022 season, the cruise line will bring more than 81,000 guests to the city, which will result in more than $35 million in direct spending.Operationally, each ship visit directly contributes $364,000 to the local economy in provisioning (fuel, food, flowers, piano tuning, supplies), port taxes, and spending. When Koningsdam and Zuiderdam call at San Diego, both ships will be using shore power, reducing the ships' carbon footprint.Throughout the years, Holland America Line has been actively involved with more than 30 nonprofits in San Diego County through giving, shipboard lunches and cruise donations, including La Jolla Playhouse, San Ysidro Health and Girl Scouts San Diego With half its U.S. fleet back in service and sailing from six U.S. homeports – the most in cruising – Carnival Cruise Line has had an accomplishment-filled three months since resuming guest operations this summer. The company's restart began on July 3, 2021 when Carnival Vista set sail from Galveston and since then 10 additional ships have resumed service, carrying 237,000 guests from homeports along the East and West Coasts and the Gulf of Mexico all while guests were devouring nearly half a million Guy Fieri burgers and enjoying 11,000 adrenaline-fueled rides on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea that debuted on the new Mardi Gras July 31, 2021.But it's more than just burgers and roller coaster rides, Carnival's resumption of service has provided much-needed vacations to hundreds of thousands of loyal guests, a boost to the economies in its homeport and port-of-call communities and opportunities for its shipboard team members to support their families in 120 countries around the worldCarnival Cruise Line has announced plans to have 17 ships back in guest service by the end of 2021, with additional ships returning in January and February and the entire U.S. fleet back in guest operations by spring 2022.MSC Cruises receives green light to restart cruises in Brazil and South Africa  The Cruise Division of MSC Group has confirmed cruise resumption in Brazil, following the green light from local health authority Anvisa for the resumption of cruise sailings in the country following a 20-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Three of MSC Cruises' biggest and most innovative vessels are set to operate in Brazilian waters between November 2021 and March 2022.MSC's return to Brazil is further evidence of the phased restart that saw the Company lead the cruise industry's resumption in August 2020 in the Mediterranean.  It also aligns with MSC Cruises' long-established leadership in the country that will see the extension of its fleet's continued deployment into this season with the reopening of an important market.MSC Preziosa, MSC Seaside and MSC Splendida will homeport in Brazil.  This will be MSC Seaside's first ever season in the country.Separately, the Cruise Division of MSC Group also welcomed the decision by the South African government that cruise ships will be able to operate this coming season of 2021 in-line with national health protocols following the industry's shutdown in 2020 as a result of the pandemic ashore. The Company is now waiting for the government's additional specific guidelines for the resumption of cruises for South African holidaymakers and it will soon reconfirm the schedule of cruises planned for the season 2021/22.MSC Cruises currently has 12 ships operating across the world with plans for up to 15 to be in operation for the 2021 season (November 2021 and March 2022).MSC Cruises adds second ship for World Cruise 2023MSC Cruises has revealed that a second ship, MSC Magnifica, will be joining MSC Poesia on the MSC World Cruise 2023. What island is that you ask? We are heading to a place that has been kicking ass with listener support recently, and as we learned from a listener, they are not all pussies. We are heading to the land of Peter Jackson, Taika Waititi, Sir Edmund Hillary, Ernest Rutherford, who if you're not up on your scientists, was a  physicist who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him to be the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday, Jean Batten, a female aviator who made the first solo flight from England to New Zealand, and the list could go on. Since we gave it away in the last description… You've probably guessed it… We're heading to New Zealand! Not only that… Creepy New Zealand!   So you know by now how we do it here on our creepy series, we like to give you a history of the location we're at and then drive into all that is creepy about said place! Having said that, let's check out the history of New Zealand. It all started when Bilbo Baggins found a ring. It was the one ring to rule them all… Oh wait.. Sorry… Wrong history… oh ya here we go.. Māori were the first inhabitants of New Zealand or Aotearoa, guided by Kupe the great navigator. When did Maori first arrive in New Zealand? According to Māori, the first explorer to reach New Zealand was Kupe. Using the stars and ocean currents as his navigational guides, he ventured across the Pacific on his waka hourua (voyaging canoe) from his ancestral Polynesian homeland of Hawaiki. It is thought that Kupe made landfall at the Hokianga Harbour in Northland, around 1000 years ago. You will not find Hawaiki on a map, but it is believed Māori came from an island or group of islands in Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean. There are distinct similarities between the Māori language and culture and others of Polynesia including the Cook Islands, Hawaii, and Tahiti. More waka hourua followed Kupe over the next few hundred years, landing at various parts of New Zealand. It is believed that Polynesian migration was planned and deliberate, with many waka hourua making return journeys to Hawaiki. Today, Māori are part of an iwi (tribe), a group of people who are descendants of a common ancestor and associated with a certain region or area in New Zealand. Each iwi has their own hapū (sub-tribes). Iwi can trace their entire origins and whakapapa (genealogy) back to certain waka hourua. The seven waka that arrived to Aotearoa were called Tainui, Te Arawa, Mātaatua, Kurahaupō, Tokomaru, Aotea and Tākitimu. Māori were expert hunters, gatherers and growers. They wove fishing nets from harakeke (flax), and carved fish hooks from bone and stone. They hunted native birds, including moa, the world's largest bird, with a range of ingenious traps and snares.   Māori cultivated land and introduced vegetables from Polynesia, including the kūmara (sweet potato) and often cooked hāngi (an earth oven). They also ate native vegetables, roots and berries. Woven baskets were used to carry food, which was often stored in a pātaka — a storehouse raised on stilts.  To protect themselves from being attacked by others, Māori would construct pā (fortified village). Built in strategic locations, pā were cleverly constructed with a series of stockades and trenches protecting the inhabitants from intruders. Today, many historic pā sites can be found throughout the country.   Māori warriors were strong and fearless, able to skillfully wield a variety of traditional weapons, including the spear-like taiaha and club-like mere. Today, these weapons may be seen in Māori ceremonies, such as the wero (challenge). You can also find these traditional weapons in museums. While Māori lived throughout the North and South Islands, the Moriori, another Polynesian tribe, lived on the Chatham Islands, nearly 900 kilometres east of Christchurch. Moriori are believed to have migrated to the Chathams from the South Island of New Zealand. In the late 18th century, there were about 2000 Moriori living in the Chathams. However, disease and attacks from Māori saw the numbers of this peace-loving tribe become severely depleted. The last full-blooded Moriori is believed to have died in 1933.The first European to sight New Zealand was Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. He was on an expedition to discover a great Southern continent ‘Great South Land' that was believed to be rich in minerals. In 1642, while searching for this continent, Tasman sighted a ‘large high-lying land' off the West Coast of the South Island.   Abel Tasman annexed the country for Holland under the name of ‘Staten Landt' (later changed to ‘New Zealand' by Dutch mapmakers). Sailing up the country's West Coast, Tasman's first contact with Māori was at the top of the South Island in what is now called Golden Bay. Two waka (canoes) full of Māori men sighted Tasman's boat. Tasman sent out his men in a small boat, but various misunderstandings saw it rammed by one of the waka. In the resulting skirmish, four of Tasman's men were killed.   Tasman never set foot on New Zealand, and after sailing up the West Coast, went on to some Pacific Islands, and then back to Batavia (now Jakarta) in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). His mission to New Zealand was considered unsuccessful by his employers, the Dutch East India Company, Tasman having found ‘no treasures or matters of great profit'. Captain James Cook, sent to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus, was also tasked with the search for the great southern continent thought to exist in the southern seas. Cook's cabin boy, Young Nick, sighted a piece of land (now called Young Nick's Head) near Gisborne in 1769. Cook successfully circumnavigated and mapped the country, and led two more expeditions to New Zealand before being killed in Hawaii in 1779. Prior to 1840, it was mainly whalers, sealers, and missionaries who came to New Zealand. These settlers had considerable contact with Māori, especially in coastal areas. Māori and Pākehā (Europeans) traded extensively, and some Europeans lived among Māori. The contribution of guns to Māori intertribal warfare, along with European diseases, led to a steep decline in the Māori population during this time.  Signed in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi is an agreement between the British Crown and Māori.   Around this time, there were 125,000 Māori and about 2000 settlers in New Zealand. Sealers and whalers were the first Europeans settlers, followed by missionaries. Merchants also arrived to trade natural resources such as flax and timber from Māori in exchange for clothing, guns and other products.   As more immigrants settled permanently in New Zealand, they weren't always fair in their dealings with Māori over land. A number of Māori chiefs sought protection from William IV, the King of England, and recognition of their special trade and missionary contacts with Britain. They feared a takeover by nations like France, and wanted to stop the lawlessness of the British people in their country. As British settlement increased, the British Government decided to negotiate a formal agreement with Māori chiefs to become a British Colony. A treaty was drawn up in English then translated into Māori.   The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February 6, 1840, at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. Forty-three Northland Chiefs signed the treaty on that day. Over 500 Māori Chiefs signed it as it was taken around the country during the next eight months. The Treaty had three articles:   that the Queen (or king) of Great Britain has the right to rule over New Zealand; that Māori chiefs would keep their land and their chieftainships, and would agree to sell their land only to the British monarch; and that all Māori would have the same rights as British subjects. The second and third articles have caused controversy through the years, mainly because of translation problems. Successive governments believed the Treaty enabled complete sovereignty over Māori, their lands and resources. But Māori believed that they were merely giving permission for the British to use their land. Disputes over ownership followed involving a series of violent conflicts during the 19th century. These became known as the New Zealand Land Wars, and were concentrated around Northland and the southern part of the North Island during the 1840s, and the central North Island in the 1860s. Both sides suffered losses, with the British Crown the eventual victor. Land confiscation and questionable land sales carried on through to the 20th century, until the vast majority of land in New Zealand was owned by settlers and the Crown. Following its signing, many of the rights guaranteed to Māori in the Treaty of Waitangi were ignored. To help rectify this, the Waitangi Tribunal was set up in 1975. It has ruled on a number of claims brought by Māori iwi (tribes) and in many cases, compensation has been granted.   While disagreements over the terms of the treaty continue to this day, it is still considered New Zealand's founding document.   The grounds and building where the treaty was signed have been preserved. Today, the Waitangi Historic Reserve is a popular tourist attraction. Here you can explore the museum, watch a cultural performance inside the carved Māori meeting house, and visit the colonial mission house, historic flagstaff, and beautiful waka taua (Māori war canoe). Throughout the 19th and much of the 20th century, the ‘homeland' of Britain had an enormous influence on New Zealand. Government administration, education, and culture were largely built on British models. New Zealand troops fought, and suffered severe casualties in the Boer War and the two World Wars. As Prime Minister Michael Savage said about England in 1939, ‘where she goes, we go, where she stands, we stand'. After World War II, cultural ties with Great Britain remained strong. However, successive New Zealand governments saw the USA as their major ally and protector. New Zealand signed the joined SEATO (South-East Asia Treaty Organisation) and signed the ANZUS (Australia, New Zealand, and United States) Pact. New Zealand troops also fought with US forces during the Korean and Vietnam wars. While New Zealand is still heavily influenced by its colonial heritage, the country now has its own strong sense of identity. While still a member of the British Commonwealth, and maintaining close, friendly relations with the USA, New Zealand now has a far more independent trading and foreign policy. Since the mid 1980s, New Zealand has been a nuclear free zone, with its armed forces primarily focused on peacekeeping in the Pacific region. This history of the country was taken directly from NewZealand.Com. It was the best summation without getting too overblown we could find!  So now with that history of the country down let's get into the creepiness!!   First up, a ghost town!  Now farmland and Bush, Tangarakau once was a thriving community of 1200 people. It's a tiny dot on the map 90 minutes' drive from both Stratford and Taumarunui - so remote that it isn't even on the Forgotten Highway. You must turn off State Highway 43 and drive 6km into bush and rugged farmland to reach all that's left of it, which is almost nothing. There's a campground with cabins and provision for motorhomes, a working farm, the heavily rainforested banks of the Tangarakau River and surrounding hills to explore and plenty of outdoor activities: fossil collecting, kayaking, hunting. The name, which translates as "to fell trees” seems appropriate, for there's nothing but paddocks where a community of 1200 tunnellers and railway workers once thrived. Tangarakau was the epicentre of an epic construction job accomplished with picks, shovels and dynamite - a project which it's said would have cost $9 billion in today's money. Construction of the Stratford-Okahukura railway line began from Stratford in 1901 and took more than three decades to complete. The link was mothballed in 2009, though you can still ride over it in tourist railcarts. For most of its life this railway thrived, with goods trains carrying coal, stock and wool and passenger railcars travelling both ways every day. One feature of visiting Tangarakau on the railcarts is that the railway ballast on this part of the track is full of fossils. For about 10 years, during the height of construction, Tangarakau boasted a drapery store, hairdresser and tobacconist, boot shop, tearooms, confectioner and fruiterer, social rooms, post office and savings bank, police station, a boarding house, resident doctor and dispensary (formed by a co-operative Tangarakau Medical Association), a maternity home, cinema and social hall, lending library and reading room, a well-equipped school, recreation ground and tennis court. The streets were lit by a power station provided by the Public Works Department. According to Taranaki's Ghost Town by Derek Morris, men who built the Stratford-Okahukura railway line earned only a few pounds a week. But everyone gave a day's wages to the victims of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. After the line was completed in 1932, the workers drifted away and most buildings were dismantled and removed. During the 1960s, the population dwindled to eight. Now only Bushlands Holiday Park remains.   Not far from the ghost town, in the spectacular Tangarakau Gorge, is the grave of pioneer surveyor Joshua Morgan who died in 1893. Morgan was an extraordinary man - the first European to cross the Urewera Ranges and an eyewitness to the 1886 Tarawera eruption. He spoke fluent Maori and often used English and Maori interchangeably. Morgan fell ill while surveying the road linking Stratford and Taumarunui and did not survive to see the historic railway line through to completion. Morgan's tomb has become a place for travellers to pause and reflect on those who built the Stratford-Okahukura railway line. There's not a ton of sightings from this place but there are a few ghost stories. Some have stated that they've seen apparitions wandering the ground. And there are reports of strange noises in the area as well. Some campers at the campground have reported creepy things happening while they've stayed there including odd noises and something messing with their tents andRVs, wildlife or spirits of  the tallest workers that died working hard to complete the railway?    So we started out light to whet your whistles. Let's get into more creepiness!   Next up we head to Auckland! There we find the Ewelme cottage, which from what we can tell is considered one of the most haunted places in the area! Built in the 1860s, this charming cottage in Parnell was once home to Reverend Lush and his wife. It also functioned as a bolt-hole during times of tribal conflict in Howick, where Reverend Lush preached. This house has remained largely intact and virtually unchanged in the years since when it was built. It is a glimpse into what life in New Zealand used to be like!   It is also rumoured to be haunted by the spirits of women and children, and in particular by the spirit of a young girl. We found a description of a paranormal investigation done at the house and we're gonna share some of those findings. Rather high EMF levels were detected in a few places within the house.

Hanna found her passion for the marine environment back in 2012 when she was working as a deckhand on board the tall ship Soren Larsen for its 7-month voyage of the South Pacific Ocean. Sailing from Sydney (Australia) she went to New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, before we returned to Sydney. Nature dictated the days on board, and her daily encounters with marine animals, including dolphins, flying fish, albatrosses, and pilot whales helped her learn the powers of the ocean. We sailed through storms that tore our sails, through sea-states with 4-meter high waves, and we climbed the mast in pouring rain. Hanna's time in Australia and the South Pacific led her to start a degree in Animal Biology at Stirling University in Scotland. Since this Hanna has started a degree in qualitative analysis and statistics. Hanna currently runs the account Sustainable Biologist on Instagram where she shares knowledge of conservation and the marine environment in hopes to raise awareness of issues related to both marine and terrestrial animals. The catastrophic and unprecedented 2019-2020 Australian bushfire season, colloquially referred to as the Black Summer, burnt an estimated 18.6 million hectares (46 million acres; 186,000 square kilometres, 72,000 square miles), destroyed over 5,900 buildings (including 2,779 homes) and killed at least 34 people (including a number of firefighters). An estimated one billion animals were killed and some endangered species may have been pushed to extinction. At its peaks, air quality dropped to hazardous levels. Smoke from the Australian fires was detected some 11,000 kilometres (6,800 miles) away across the South Pacific Ocean in Chile and Argentina. The cost of the fires is expected to be in the billions of dollars. While the fires that ravaged every state and territory in Australia, particular the south-eastern States, are now extinguished and the world’s attention has turned to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot allow the Australian Black Summer to become a memory. The impacts of Covid-19 will be a speedbump in contrast to the growing impacts of climate change. It’s time to address the scary reality that the Australian Black Summer signals a new normal for bushfires in Australia and other regions around the world. In this Episode of Eco Chat I’m joined by former Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW Greg Mullins to unpack the angriest summer of fires in Australia. We discuss how climate change is impacting the frequency and intensity of bushfires and how communities can reduce their bushfire risk in a warming world.

Third Pod from the Sun

From 1946 to 1958, the United States military conducted more than 20 nuclear bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, an idyllic tropical island in the South Pacific Ocean. During the first of these tests, conducted in July 1946, the military anchored nearly 100 warships and submarines within Bikini’s large lagoon to see how a nuclear blast would affect a naval fleet. The first bomb, in test Able, was detonated in the air and caused a less than expected amount of damage to the fleet. But the second bomb, in test Baker, was suspended below a barge and detonated underwater. The Baker test was far more destructive than the military had planned. The detonation left a crater on the seafloor roughly 800 meters (half a mile) wide and 10 meters (33 feet) deep. A colossal column of boiling, radioactive water poured over the target ships, tossing them about like toys in a bathtub. Three major ships and several small aircraft were sunk within the first few days. The remainder of the fleet was so contaminated with radiation that only 9 of Baker’s original 84 ships were able to be scrapped – the rest were deliberately sunk. University of Delaware professor Art Trembanis spent the summer of 2019 mapping the seafloor around Bikini to see if he could find evidence of these tests all these decades later. Art and his colleagues have so far discovered the craters from Baker and other tests have left permanent scars on the seafloor around the atoll. In this episode, Art recounts the mesmerizing sequence of events triggered by the Baker detonation and explains how a tropical paradise became a battleship graveyard. This episode was produced and mixed by Lauren Lipuma.

Wally Cash, 93, of Hilliard is among the ever-shrinking ranks of World War II veterans in the United States. Cash spent two years and 10 months in the U.S. Navy and concluded his active service before he was 21 years old. He was a 17-year-old senior at Grandview Heights High School when he enlisted in the Navy in August 1943. He later earned his high school diploma after his military discharge. “My parents encouraged me to (join the military), but when I brought home the papers for them to sign, they didn’t want to, (but) they reluctantly signed,” Cash said. Cash said he was motivated to enlist after hearing stories from some of his classmates who had graduated several years earlier, as well as from neighbors who had returned home after service. “(Grandview Heights was) a close community,” he said. After enlisting, Cash was sent to the Naval Station Great Lakes near Chicago. “The first thing they told us was to shave every day, and I thought, ‘Why do I need to shave? I wasn’t growing hair yet,’ ” said Cash, adding that he and other recruits also had to work around a Hollywood film shoot while they completed basic training. After eight weeks at the training station, Cash was sent to sonar school in San Diego. “I took tests (at the training center), and the Navy determined I was best suited for sonar school, he said. “You didn’t have a choice; you go.” Although Cash might have been well-suited for hunting submarines, he soon learned he was not so well-suited for the sea. “I got seasick,” he said. Cash spent five weeks in sonar school in November and December 1943. “We hunted a World War I submarine the Navy still had,” he said. Cash said he had learned how to recognize submarines from other underwater objects and how submarines were moving but missed too many maneuvers. “But I missed (some training) because I was seasick (and) was dropped,” Cash said. In lieu of tracking submarines, Cash was sent to a naval ship-repair station, also in San Diego, where he spent most of 1944. “Because I already had security clearance from my time in sonar school, I worked with electronics,” filling orders for parts and delivering them to ships that made the request, he said. In November 1944, Cash was assigned to the U.S. Naval Advance Base Personnel Depot in San Bruno, California, for a one-month stint. The Navy crafted the base from a former horse racetrack, he said. For the ensuing five months, Cash participated in combat training. “We drilled, (ran) an obstacle course (and learned to) strip a rifle,” Cash said. In December 1944, Cash was sent to a naval repair base on the island of Guam. By then, Allied forces had advanced west far enough across the Pacific Ocean to make it a challenge to get damaged ships to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii for repair. To that end, the Navy had sent through the Panama Canal the material to build a naval repair base on Guam. It was an arduous five-week journey from San Bruno to Guam (via Pearl Harbor), Cash recalled. It was a troop ship to Guam without air-conditioning, and the bunks were five decks below, he said. “So we would go up at night and sleep on the (top). ... It was a lot cooler up there than it was five decks below,” said Cash, adding that sometimes passing Marines on board would startle them with orders to put on life belts. While on Guam, when Cash wasn’t working at the naval repair base, he would work in the galley. But he also found time to explore the island and make friends, including, to some extent, Japanese prisoners of war. “It was frowned upon” to do so, but Cash said he still mingled with Japanese POWs. “They weren’t trying to run away,” he said. “They had three meals a day.” Cash said he had learned to speak a little Japanese, including how to count, for the purpose of bartering. “I would trade things with them and even buy a few things,” including drawings and artwork that Cash said he wished he had kept. He still has one drawing, he said. The POWs recognized him, Cash said, and even raised the eyebrows of guards when on his approach one day, the POWs bowed their heads and said to him, “Kon’nichiwa, changey boy.” Kon’nichiwa means “good afternoon.” “Changey boy” was the name the POWs gave him for trading and bartering, Cash said. Although he was stationed in a remote expanse of the South Pacific Ocean, a radio station on Guam kept Navy personnel up to date with news from the war, he said. In June, on what would become V-E Day (Victory in Europe), when the war in the European theater ended, Cash recalled the commissary officers ordered the cooks to prepare steaks for everyone who had worked in the galley. Cash was sent home in July 1946, a little earlier than he had expected. “I thought I was in until I was 21 (because I had enlisted as a minor), but someone realized that I should have (already) been discharged and I was sent home,” said Cash, who arrived back in the United States via San Francisco. Five weeks later, he was in Columbus via a train. But his time in the U.S. Navy wasn’t quite finished, he said. Cash subsequently served 44 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of master chief petty officer, the highest possible rank among enlisted personnel. His decorations include the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. As a civilian, Cash and his wife, Barbara, a U.S. Navy Reserve veteran, operated the Hilliard Food Pantry for 20 years. Cash is a member of the Hilliard Kiwanis Club, American Legion Memorial Post 614 and the Hilliard United Methodist Church. We have to go back! In 2004 the world of television was in need of a game changer. Along came Lost. Lost is the American drama series full of a whole lot of mystery, which premiered on the ABC on September 22, 2004, running for six seasons until May 23, 2010, comprising a total of 121 episodes. Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J Abrams, and Damon Lindelof, with Carlton Cuse and Lindelof serving as showrunners and head writers, Lost is a show that blended character driven drama with elements of supernatural and science fiction. Following the survivors of a commercial plane crash, Oceanic Airlines 815 on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean, Lost’s story is told in a heavily serialized manner, with episodes typically featuring a primary storyline set on the island, augmented by flashbacks, and later flash-forward sequences (as well as a flash-sideways concept in season six), providing additional insight into the involved characters. As the series progresses, Lost evolves from a show about a group of castaways to a show with a rich and expansive mythology, with mysteries to uncover such as The Monster, The Hatch, The Numbers, The Others, The Freighter People, The Dharma Initiative, Jacob, and so much more. There was no way we could squeeze everything into an acceptable podcast length, so we bring you the first of two parts. We look at the ensemble of characters and focus on the first three seasons in Part One of our Lost Rewind & Review.
