This week, we're tapping into the intersection of hip-hop, technology, education and startups with a true pioneer - Arabian Prince. If you know your rap history, you know Arabian Prince as one of the founding members of N.W.A, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rap group that redefined music and culture. But what you might not know is that he's also a lifelong technologist, entrepreneur and futurist - a kid from Compton who got his hands on a computer early and never looked back. From songwriting, rapping and DJ-ing to producing electro-funk beats and Grammy-nominated #1 hit song Supersonic to leading innovation in 3D animation, video games, and blockchain, he's been pushing the boundaries of technology for decades. In this episode, we talk about how a chance encounter with an N.W.A-inspired crypto-merch baseball cap led to this conversation, and from there, we cover everything - his early love for tech, how music and technology shaped his career, and his mission as founder of INov8 Next Open Labs and co-founder of INov8 Capital to bring the next generation of kids into the world of tech. Form beats to bytes, Arabian's story is all about curiosity, hustle, creativity, and breaking boundaries - whether it's in music, business, or technology, so this is one you don't want to miss. The number of Americans living with Alzheimer's is growing — and growing fast. More than six million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's. As the size of the U.S. population age 65 and older continues to grow, so too will the number and proportion of Americans with Alzheimer's or other dementias. By 2050, the number of people aged 65 and older with Alzheimer's may grow to a projected 12.7 million, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent or cure Alzheimer's disease. Yet, people often face barriers to accessing quality care because of factors such as geography, language, insurance coverage and high costs of care and lack of transportation, to name a few.Toward this goal, the Alzheimer's Association and MATTER are calling on innovators to submit their solutions to the second annual Alzheimer's Association Pitch Competition. These solutions should address the need for increasing access to quality, person-centered care for people living with Alzheimer's disease in all communities, especially historically underserved communities.Join MATTER and the Alzheimer's Association for a panel discussion on this topic with panelists Katie Evans, chief mission engagement officer of the Alzheimer's Association, Jay Bhatt, practicing physician and managing director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions and the Deloitte Health Equity Institute, and Ashley Alexander, president and CEO of the Kelsey Research Foundation. The panel was moderated by Morgan Daven, vice president of health systems of the Alzheimer's Association. For more information, visit matter.health and follow us on social: LinkedIn @MATTERTwitter @MATTERhealthInstagram @matterhealth

It's become fashionable to say that the “American Dream” is dead. Many people feel that the best days are behind us. The pandemic created extraordinary wealth concentrated in a small group of powerful people, while average Americans feel left behind. The humiliating pullout from Afghanistan, supply-chain disruptions and the surge in inflation causing increased costs of everyday items (such as food and gas at the pumps) erodes our confidence. Sometimes, we need a reminder that despite setbacks, there is hope. The American Dream of immigrating to the United States and creating a better life for your family is still alive and well. Yong Kim was born in South Korea. At an early age, he became infatuated with the U.S. and desperately wanted to emigrate. He begged his parents for years to relocate. As a young adult, Kim boldly left his family and came to America. With broken English, he tried—mostly unsuccessfully—to find a job. “This was before the days of the internet. Living alone in a foreign country, not knowing anyone and not speaking English, was extremely difficult,” Kim said. Over time, he found his way. He attended the University of Chicago and received a masters and M.B.A. from Harvard. Kim went on to found Wonolo, an on-demand staffing marketplace for blue-collar workers. The platform connects businesses that have critical temporary staffing needs with workers looking for a gig. Kim conceived of the app based, in part, on his own experiences working at Coke. He noticed that it was hard to quickly find workers and thought that there has to be a better way to both benefit folks looking for part-time work and employers who desperately need to staff up. With over $200 million in venture capital funding, Kim says that Wonolo has over 1 million people on the platform, predominantly retail, factory, warehouse, fulfillment, hospitality and related types of workers. There are thousands of businesses that seek Wonolo's help.

Sarah's joined by Katie Evans, Head of Research and Policy, Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, Joe Surtees, Policy Manager at the Single Financial Guidance Body and James Nicholson, Engineer at Monzo to discuss why money's such a taboo subject in everyday discussion, spending for stress and whether technology can solve the problem or if it'll just exacerbate it. The group also discuss positive friction, the trap of frictionless finance those who struggle with spending and the reality that some people will simply never have enough money for their needs. We take a look at these issues and many more on this week's episode of Fintech Insider. We hope you enjoy the show and, as ever, don't forget to subscribe! Want to join the conversation on all the topics discussed? Tweet the show @fintechinsiders and if you really love the show, please leave us a review on iTunes. In Episode 25, we sit down with local comedians Angelia Petrillo and Elliott Elliott, who are hosting the Back to the ‘80s Comedy Show & Dance Party at The Keys in downtown Scranton this Saturday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. The show features comedians pretending it’s the 1980s, only referencing topics from that decade, along with an ‘80s dance party and live music by Katie Evans, Candi Vee, and Anthony “Shiny” Montini. The featured drink is $5 Ecto Cooler. Before and during the interview, we drink three different crowlers from Bell's Brewery in Michigan - Pooltime Ale, Porter, and Quinannan Falls IPL - courtesy of Beer Boys in Wilkes-Barre. Each turns out to be great representations of their respective styles. We talk about why they both decided to get into stand-up comedy, their best and worst show stories and strange venue experiences, their different comedic styles and deliveries, working with fellow comedians in the local comedy scene, developing their voices through performing live and attending open mics, the importance of bombing and failing, Elliott playing characters on stage, Angelia putting together a successful Scranton Fringe Festival show last year and what is in store for this year, where the idea for the ‘80s show came from and why they wanted to do it, what they remember and love about the ‘80s, Elliott’s dirty Yoda impression, other themed comedy nights in the future, and more. We end the episode by going through the list of the 100 most popular ‘80s movies on the Internet Movie Database and forcing Angelia and Elliott to choose one film from each pair of movies to learn more about their tastes, personalities, and knowledge of the decade. This leads to some fun conversations and asides. The NEPA Scene Podcast covers arts, entertainment, and the issues that matter to Northeastern Pennsylvania. Amazon.com Inc. officially closed its deal to buy Whole Foods for $13.7 billion dollars this week, effectively making its first really substantial entry into bricks-and-mortar retailing, and probably giving supermarket executives everywhere nightmares. In closing the deal, Amazon confirmed a number of the theories that industry watchers had been batting around since Amazon announced its plans to by Whole Foods back in June. In this episode, Katie Evans, Internet Retailer’s technology editor who has been following the Amazon Whole Foods story, and who authored Internet Retailer Magazine’s September cover story on the same topic, talks about the moves Amazon is beginning to make in the grocery market and what it means for retailing at large.
Have you ever received a marketing email at 3am? A cynic might think these types of communications are targeted at people who are having trouble sleeping. But maybe the cynic would be right? We asked Katie Evans of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute to talk us through the ways in which the business community and the media could cater better for people experiencing mental health issues.

Today’s show is the first in a segment dedicated to those who create with uncommon or interesting materials and as soon as I landed on this theme, I knew I needed to reach out to today’s guest. Katie J. Evans of Hart Variations is a jewelry designer who uses things like butterfly wings, snake skin sheds, bones, entire insects, and feathers to create really stunning and unique pieces. In the interview, we talk about how her materials are ethically and legally sourced, which is a process I wasn't familiar with. I envisioned her walking along and finding the materials, but it turns out there are actually rules and regulations and official suppliers for these types of materials. We also talk a lot about her creative process, why she decided to hire help, how she’s navigated the jewelry world to find the right audience for her work and why feedback from her customers has made a world of difference in her business. Hear how criminals pretending to be from Talk Talk aim to con customers out of their savings. Money Box listener Graham recorded a call from a thief who said he worked for the firm's customer services team, took control of his computer and almost managed to get access to Graham's bank account details. You will hear the various stages of the con. Talk Talk has said that 'only' 157,000 people and not 4 million had their personal details hacked in last month's attack. As credit card debt rises by more than £2 billion a year to £63 billion, the regulator, the FCA, has published thoughts towards how it might control the market. It found that nearly one in five credit card holders, nearly six million people, are in difficulty with their debts. Most of them - the ones who have big borrowings or pay the minimum each month - are profitable for the card companies. So there is no incentive to try to help them. Will the FCA change that? The regulator's director of strategy and competition, Christopher Woolard, speaks to the programme. Older people have cashed in £4.7bn from their pensions since the new freedoms came into force more than six months ago. It's prompted a debate about how best to ensure that people do not run out of retirement money by spending it too quickly and facing poverty in old age. Should there be a warning system to 'nudge' people if they are in danger of blowing their savings? Do we need new financial products to help provide people with an adequate lifetime income from their pension pot? Katie Evans from the Social Market Foundation and Henry Tapper from First Actuarial debate the issues.
