This week, Teed Up hosts Matthew Gomez and Matthew Coleman are joined by former Long Beach State men's volleyball player and current head coach Alan Knipe. After a trip to the NCAA championship game in 1990, Knipe was a key member of the 1991 team that returned the following year to beat USC to capture the school's first men's national championship. After a professional stint overseas, Knipe returned to the helm of the Long Beach State men's volleyball program. He has since been named AVCA National Coach of the Year three times and led The Beach to back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. Knipe reflects on thirty years of the Walter Pyramid and the impact the iconic venue has had on LBSU Athletics and the unique home court advantage it creates. He also reflects on some of his favorite moments coaching his son and what to expect going into next season. Ben is in England where he had the opportunity to visit the "Adventures in Time and Space - 60 Years of Doctor Who Art" exhibition at the Weston Museum in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. This impressive collection spans the show's history and features original art from novelisations, VHS covers, annuals, and other visual treasures, including works from Chris Achilléos, Andrew Skilleter, Roy Knipe, and Colin Howard. Plus the portait of Ace from 'Silver Nemesis' done in the style of Thomas Gainsborough. Off the Block interviews coach Alan Knipe as Long Beach State prepares for the upcoming season.
Alan is a volleyball player and now coach. As a player he was a Collegiate All American and represented the USA Team.He was an Assistant Coach at his Alma Mater, Long Beach State University in 1996 before taking over as Head Coach in 2000. He has led them to 7 final four appearances and back-to-back NCAA championships in 2018 and 2019.From 2009 until 2012 he was also the Coach of the USA Men's team and led them to Gold medal at 3 Continental Championships as well as Gold at the 2012 World League.Alan is a reflective and thoughtful leader, who manages to couple a program with a strong structure and supportive environment. Some of the highlights from the interview for me were:The way he encourages his team to focus on the message not the tone during in-game communication. The importance of not coaching to the last point, but to be able to manage your emotions and look forward. The importance of honesty and not using “feelings” when describing selection decisions And how he uses Mindset Monday to reset and prepare for the week ahead. For this Western Regional Update, we caught up with grower Sandon Knipe who runs a mixed farming enterprise with his family. We caught up in the field at his home farm based in Spencers Brook in WA's Avon Valley.Sandon explained they've expanded their enterprise away from this region, acquiring more farmland in the Jennapullin township, which is north east of the home farm. This was a strategic decision to chase a dryer climate, better suited to broadacre farming. In this chat, we chat about the evolution of Sandon's farming system, discussing how they effectively adopted a chaff cart, including the benefits of weed control and the ability to supplement their sheep feed. In recent times, Sandon said they've been running out of time to burn dumps and they've been looking at moving away from this practice for the key reasons of social license, time, and nutrient management. They've now acquired a Seed Terminator weed seed impact mill. We also catch-up on how seeding is going for the Knipe enterprise. Short episode this week. Apologies for being late, but being on the road don't lend well to uploading podcasts. This edition has some new stuff we tried out for a recurring news segment. Let us know what you think of it. This week we're talking to John the Lefty, one of the most clued-in independent journalists in Portland about some recent stories. First we'll talk a new fascist group active in the area, then dive into the verdicts in the Joey Gibson/Patriot Prayer/Cider Riot trials. Then we're talking about the recent arrest made for the murder of antifascist activist Sean Kealiher. We recorded before the arraignment but the alleged killer, Christopher Knipe, will go to trial on the 26th of September. Knipe pleaded not guilty this week to 2nd Degree Homicide charges.SHOW NOTES:John's media on FacebookJohn on TwitterTickets for Rock Against Racism Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. “In brief, dialogism says when you go to a text, and read a novel and they present different characters, every character should be viewed as having their own storyline. So dialogism plays out in the classroom in the same way. Recognizing theoretically that every student that I have has their own story. They all have their own narrative. Like you said, we can't dismiss them. It's very dehumanizing to pretend that all of these students can learn in the same way and they all have the same capacity and they all have the same background.” - Jack Knipe Welcome back to another episode of Discover More. This week's guest is Jack Knipe, an assistant professor of English and Spanish at Limestone University & an International Student Support Coordinator. Jack has a Ph.D. in International Education & Linguistics, Masters in Education in Integrated Curriculum & Instruction, and more. He is also an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, George Mason University, Georgetown University, and Middlebury College, just to name a few. Jack comes with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all things sociolinguistic, critical thinking, and more equitable education for all. Not to mention, he is also an exceptionally impressive polyglot, who speaks 9 languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Scottish Gaelic, and more. In this episode, we discuss a wide range of fascinating topics related to language and education. Jack shares his experience learning 9 languages, as well as teaching in K-12 and higher education settings. He explains the complex relationship between language, race and power, and explores some of the positives and negatives of today's education system. Jack views education as an art, one that necessitates a holistic lens of openness, diversity, and compassion. We hope you enjoy this week's Discover More with us and Jack Knipe. Recently, the MEAT+POULTRY Podcast featured Jeff Savell, a Texas A&M meat professor, as he shared stories of what it’s like having meat education in person during the pandemic. In this week’s podcast, Lynn Knipe, extension processed meats specialist at The Ohio State University, continues that discussion. Knipe shares the processes and procedures that the faculty took in Columbus, Ohio, before holding on-campus meat classes. He also discusses how his extension programs feature people already working in the meat industry. Lastly, Knipe shares his insights about other processing trends he’s seen during the COVID-19 pandemic including a larger interest in on-the-farm slaughtering and meat processing and what needs to be done to do it safely. Earlier in August, Knipe was appointed to the USDA's National Advisotry Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI). He will serve a two-year term.

David Knipe is the Higgins Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical school. A virologist, Dr. Knipe focuses his research efforts on the herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) – the virus we have to thank for genital herpes. An astonishing 20% of Americans have been infected with HSV-2, and whether they’ve had a recognizable outbreak of sores or not, they can still carry the virus. Once you contract the HSV-2 it lays low in your nerve cells, waiting for the right moment to create watery blisters that eventually burst and release more virus particles. Dr. Knipe is interested in how the cells lead these two, very different lives: quiet and quiescent inside the nerve cell and loud and lytic in the epithelium on the surface of the body. Genital herpes is no picnic, but the effects of HSV-2 infection are worst in people with depressed immune systems and in newborns; babies who pick up the virus during birth may suffer from neurological damage, brain damage, or even death. There is no cure for genital herpes, and no means of getting rid of HSV-2, only ways of managing outbreaks. But there is some hope of relief; Dr. Knipe’s lab has developed a vaccine that will enter the trial phase soon. In this interview, I asked Dr. Knipe about how he got interested in viruses, about the vaccine he’s developed and who could hope to benefit from it, and why it’s taken science so long to develop a vaccine for this extremely common disease.
