Is the label "biblical" helping or hurting how we approach faith, church, and cultural challenges? In this thought-provoking episode of the Voxology Podcast, Mike and Tim explore the pitfalls of using "biblical" as a rigid brand, how it impacts theology, and its effects on navigating issues like justice, community, and interpretation of Scripture. They discuss the importance of reading the Bible in community, embracing humility, and fostering critical thinking to form faithful and wise communities. Drawing on listener feedback, they tackle how Scripture has been used both to liberate and to harm and ask what it means to embody a cruciform way of living. The conversation dives into the role of the church in society, the balance between individual and communal faith practices, and the dangers of reducing the Bible to oversimplified categories. With humor, deep insight, and a commitment to justice and Jesus' teachings, this episode invites you to rethink how we engage with Scripture and one another. #bible #selfimprovement #foundationforintentionalcommunity #biblestudy #importanceofchristiancommunity #bible #solascriptura #livingbythebook #eisegesisvs.exegesis #biblestudy Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Week Recap 02:51 Modeling for a Glamping Resort 06:05 Podcast Updates and Listener Feedback 09:07 Discussion on Bible Accessibility and Interpretation 11:57 The Role of Community in Bible Reading 18:09 Intent Behind Bible Study 21:05 Unity and Diversity in the Bible 26:00 The Purpose of the Bible in Community 30:09 Critique of Biblical Branding 34:02 Closing Thoughts on Wisdom and Learning 35:25 The Limitations of Biblical Prepackaging 38:51 The Harm of Misusing Biblical Concepts 44:52 Understanding the Bible as a Cross-Cultural Experience 51:59 The Three Elements of Biblical Interpretation 59:52 The Importance of Context in Biblical Texts 01:06:01 The Dark History of Biblical Misinterpretation 01:09:55 Navigating Modern Misinformation and Biblical Understanding As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. What if the Bible isn't meant to be neatly packaged and easily explained? In this episode, CHT Fellow Hakeem Bradley joins The Biblical Mind Podcast to discuss how engaging scripture means leaning into tension rather than eliminating it. He explains why asking better questions leads to deeper understanding and why forcing Jesus into every Old Testament passage can sometimes do more harm than good. Bradley also shares his personal story—growing up in the Five Percent Nation, a movement that sees the Black man as divine, and how a surprising mentorship relationship led him to faith in Jesus. His journey from deep skepticism to biblical scholarship gives him a unique perspective on how to approach scripture without assumptions or shortcuts. The conversation explores how biblical authors thought, why Jesus himself had to read scripture in context, and how reading the Bible as a tension-filled conversation—rather than a collection of easy answers—can reshape faith and theology. How does the Bible interpret itself? In this episode, Dr. Brent Strawn joins The Biblical Mind Podcast to explore intertextuality—the ways biblical authors intentionally or unconsciously connect their writings to earlier texts. Strawn breaks down different types of intertextuality, from direct citations (like Jesus quoting Psalm 22) to subtle patterns that only emerge when we read scripture holistically. Together with Dru Johnson, Strawn unpacks how intertextuality deepens biblical meaning and why recognizing these connections can transform the way we understand scripture. They also discuss the surprising link between Solomon and the Mark of the Beast (666) and how Revelation critiques imperial power using the legacy of Israel's wealthiest king. Strawn argues that biblical authors weren't just making random allusions—they were teaching us how to read scripture well. If we can recognize these hyperlinks, we can move beyond surface-level readings and grasp the depth of biblical theology. He set out to write a resource book that was not sharply for one side or the other. In doing so he found one of the sides had no Biblical support. Now he is a balanced advocate for the mutualist or biblical egalitarian interpretation of the Bible. And he can explain why in detail!Andrew Bartlett is a popular speaker and author of Men and Women in Christ, Fresh light from the Biblical Texts. When He researched and wrote his boo he was not aware of the Tru316 publications by Dr. Joy Fleming. After having discovered them he is incorporating the insight that in Genesis 3:16 God took action in two ways, multiplying two things not one as many Bible versions mistranslate the Hebrew words for their readers. Go deeper? Dr. Joy Fleming's book is Man and Woman in Biblical Unity, Theology from Genesis 2-3.Andrew Bartlett's book is available from Inter Varsity Press. Assistant professor of religious studies Hugo Mendez (FFP '22) discusses his research in his recent book projects: one exploring the role of St. Stephen in early Christian communities, and the most recent examining the biblical books of John. He also describes his fellowship experiences – at the IAH and at the National Humanities Center – and how they provided the needed time and interdisciplinary connections to work on his current book.
In this episode, Alice interviews Dr Joseph Scales, a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow in the department of Religion, Philosophy and History at the University of Agder in Norway. This podcast is the second part of a pair looking at the history and representation of conflict in ancient Judea. In part 1, Conflict and Identity in Ancient Judaism, Joe gave us a whirlwind tour of a whole series of conflicts that shaped Jewish history from around 175 BCE through to the early second century CE – looking particularly at their impact on Jewish nationhood and identity formation. That conversation provides really useful context for this epsiode, which dives deep into some of the textual sources for Jewish conflict history in antiquity. Joe draws particularly on his current research project, called Fighting Talk: Motivating Violence in Ancient Judaism, which examines the nature of pre-battle speeches in ancient Jewish texts and their relationship to established forms of pre-battle exhortation in Greek and Roman sources. As Joe has written: ‘People resort to violence for all kinds of reasons. In the interests of peace, it is essential to understand how people may be incited toward organised violence. …In warfare, combatants are often incited towards their actions by others, and in the ancient world, such incitement frequently took the form of a pre-battle speech: Greek, Roman and Jewish literature contains many examples.' In unpicking a wide range of ancient pre-battle speeches, and exploring recurring components (such as the othering of enemies, claims about the just or necessary nature of upcoming violence, a commander's handling of his soldiers' fears, and visualisations of success), Joe's research contributes not only to a deeper understanding of how warfare was conceptualised and driven in antiquity but also to wider reflections on how organised violence can be conceptualised, justified and incited today. We hope you find the discussion interesting. Do the English Biblical translations convey the original meanings of the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts from 2,000 years ago? How do the original verses differ from the ones we know today and extract meaning from? CONTEXT MATTERS, and, in this case, so does history. Not only do languages, but social norms of scribes' roles, environmental and social crises, and political interpretation all played a role in the texts distributed across the world. Now that I was able to sit down with Dr. James Sedlacek and discuss, it all makes sense. James E. Sedlacek received his BA from God's Bible School & College, Masters from MDiv Cincinnati Christian University and PhD from Nazarene Theological College. James is currently Professor of Biblical Languages at Israel Institute of Biblical Studies, teaching several levels of Greek and Hebrew, and developing exegesis courses. Additionally, James is examining special syntax of infinitives, certain patterns of repeating conditional clauses, and the lexical meaning of hapax legomena. His interests include examining texts of various languages using linguistic methods along with critiquing interpretations of those texts. Textual Criticism, Chapter 1 of As it is Translated Correctly Episode 700 Pages 1 to 11 Today we have over a thousand different “Christian” religions, all claiming to be right as they denounce all the others as being wrong. All are preaching different doctrines, yet they hold the same Bible in their hands. Unbelievable as it may seem, they still contend and make war upon each other. Why so much confusion? There may possibly be several reasons for such a labyrinth of discord and contention: (1) the Bible is being misinterpreted or discarded; (2) it is not written clearly enough for universal understanding; (3) the translators and scribes made errors; (4) many plain and precious truths have been left out; (5) and possibly, it is a combination of all of the above. It is certainly evident that something is wrong. All this contention, confusion, and warring among the Christians, indicate that man has misinterpreted, mistranslated and misunderstood the words of God. In this episode of Chasing Leviathan, PJ and Dr. Alison Knight discuss the history of biblical interpretation in early modern England, particularly how translators crafted apologetic approaches to explain difficult passages. Dr. Knight explores the profound impact that debates on interpretation had on the British crown and the whole of Britain, as well as the increasing skepticism towards attempts to harmonize biblical texts. For a deep dive into Alison Knight's work, check out her book: The Dark Bible: Cultures of Interpretation in Early Modern England

Pop quiz—name a famous kid from the Hebrew Bible. Baby Moses? Teenage David? That's about it. The Bible may be largely silent about childhood, but we can gather clues from archeology and ethnography to piece together a picture of what it was like to be a kid in ancient Israel. Special guest Kristine Garroway from Hebrew Union College joins Helen and Dave to reconstruct family life in ancient Israel: the spiritual anxieties around pregnancy, the rules of ancient adoption, and the chore lists assigned to little Israelite boys and girls. Thom Rainer posted an article some weeks ago in which he asked anyone who had access to his past sermons to destroy them. In the article he listed five reasons for his request. We're tackling the first of those reasons today.
“In Exodus 23, the Israelites are given instructions on how to maintain justice for all. This text lists acts that must be and not be done, so as to prepare a safe and equitable space for all who inhabit the land. Note how this text aims at nurturing a community in which people will act justly, even when it is not in accordance with their preferences or narrow self-interest. Exodus 23, therefore, ensures that everyone is equally entitled to the rights set forth by the law, just as UDHR Article 2 guarantees everyone's entitlement to the rights and freedoms set forth in the UDHR without discrimination.” Link: https://www.cartercenter.org/resources/pdfs/peace/human_rights/universal-declaration-human-rights-scriptually-annotated.pdf. Many claim that the Bible is just the final copy of a copy of a copy of a copy, etc. Therefore, the Bible is not historically reliable but contains many errors that were introduced by copyists. Did you know that a bunch of key themes and ideas from Genesis 3 reappear in 1 Samuel? Snakes, fruit, seeing and taking. They are often very subtle but hugely significant for understanding the theology and message of the book of Samuel. Episode 2 of Season 2, presented in collaboration with the Philosophical Research Society (PRS), explores The Book of Job, the biblical text which tells the story of a man who experiences great personal loss. The book has served as a source of contemplation about the nature of life and death, as inspiration for the creation of a variety of artistic works, and as a departure point for theological debates.Dr. Greg Salyer, President of PRS, takes us through the text, discussing its structure and content, as well as the ways in which it has been interpreted and how those interpretations may have, at times, obscured or misrepresented its meaning. In addition, he illuminates the book's relationship to fundamental human questions about existence.

To Know Him and to Make Him Known | Water Walkers Will Make Him Known Matthew 14:22-33 (NLT) A Stand Alone Message | Mick Veach | lead pastor | first aired on 09.26.2021 Introduction Read Scripture 22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It's a ghost!” 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don't be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” 28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” 29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed. —Matthew 14:22-33 1 ) Let's look at Peter for a moment Not polished—Raw passion Talks too quickly—Doesn't think thru Bold—Strong personality One moment victorious, the next messes up Probably not the one anyone would choose 2 ) Peter was always in the middle of it: “Don't tell people you are going to die” “You are the Christ” “Jesus let's stay up here and build a shelter” “If they all run, I'll die for you” “Not just my fee, wash all of me” 3 ) Peter was a water walker but was not PERFECT, his passion to be with Jesus pushed him to areas he would otherwise never go 4 ) Overview of the Text Only Peter walked on the water Question—What if they had all gotten out of the boat? Jesus would have welcomed them They would have had the greatest dance on the water as group Problem The disciples saw the waves Peter saw Jesus The boat calls your name You were not created for the boat Comfort No Sacrifice The majority of believers live in the boat (church, family) Water Walkers make Jesus known because their lives are passion about Him You were created to be a water walker A desire for Jesus above all else—Focused Desire to please Him above else—Gal.1—not after pleasing people Have the same heart as Jesus—the NATIONS—Mathew 24:14 We must begin to live in the supernatural—signs and wonders— “Expect great things from God, attempt great things from God” Water Walkers have Three Essential Actions I. Engage Jesus Continuously A. Verses 28 — Peter shouts out Lord have me come to you Lord It is more about being with Jesus than the miracle B. Biblical Verses that call us to engage James 4:8 Jeremiah 29:13 Hosea 6:6 C. Pete was always engaging Jesus Healing-Deliverances Transfiguration Miracles Teachings D. This all led to his ultimate experience becoming the one and only water walker with Jesus Without engagement to Jesus, you will never become a water walker E. Peter was transformed in that moment, water walkers make Jesus known and have distinct characteristics Water walkers love until it hurts—I John 3:17-18 a. Once you engage Jesus, you will engage people and truly love them b. It becomes messy and demands from you c. Personal example—My protective layers because of Tahir and Tyrone d. Mel loves people that no one wants to love Water walkers pray prayers that make you sweat—Mathew 7:7-8 Water walkers see sacrifice as a privilege—Phil 1:21 a. Pick up your cross and follow me b. Radical obedience F. We must decide if we truly love Jesus and once that occurs we must engage him regardless of what that looks like Key Point — Water walkers engage Jesus continuously II. Listen Carefully for Jesus' Voice A. Verse 29 — Jesus said, yes come… and Peter heard him There were so many distractions screaming at Peter at that moment: a. Disciples b. Waves, wind and rain c. Death d. Boat Yet Peter move through the distractions and heard Jesus' voice Do you hear Jesus? Biblical Texts that demand that we listen a. James 1 — Be quick to listen b. Psalm 46:10 — Be still and Know … Jesus is speaking but are you listening? He speaks through a. Scripture b. Events c. Worship d. People e. Prayer f. Holy Spirit is the leader of all this B. We make excuses when He speaks Moses said he stuttered Isaiah said he had unclean lips Jeremiah said he was too young C. Professor John Kampen of Methodist Theological School in Ohio and Hebrew Union College shares his considerable expertise on the Dead Sea Scrolls and discusses the many types of writing preserved within these amazing artifacts. He explains that the scrolls contain, in addition to many fragments of Biblical books, many pseudo-Biblical writings, original compositions, and a wide array of texts in many genres, a great number of which have been defined only through the discovery and study of the Dead Sea Scrolls themselves. Learn firsthand what’s in many of the scrolls, why this matters, and why the study of the scrolls is so difficult even today. Professor Kampen is the author of Wisdom Literature, a commentary on all of the wisdom texts in the Qumran corpus. Written and performed by Dr. John Kampen (Methodist Theological School in Ohio and Hebrew Union College); featuring Sarah Lima; produced by Christian Cloke and Sarah Lima; featuring Vivaldi's Gloria; recording and editing by R. Aaron Allen Productions.
