If you weren't alive in the nineties, it's hard to do justice to just how popular Beavis & Butt-Head were. Their MTV show was cutting-edge stuff, notably, because the two Mike Judges creations often mocked the very same artists the network had only years earlier played to great success (just ask Kip Winger). In the show, Beavis and Butt-Head's adventures were intermingled with them providing commentary on music videos, something which would eventually be phased out as the brand grew in popularity beyond MTV. It was all part of MTV's strategy to branch out beyond music videos, with its launch coinciding with The Real World and the start of MTV Films. The latter, of course, wanted to turn the teenaged animated phenomenon into a movie. After years of prodding, Mike Judge finally agreed to make Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. A Christmas of 1996 release, the film was a sizeable hit, grossing $63.1 million domestically. Still, oddly enough, it took decades for there to be a sequel, and even then, it was a streaming premiere tied to a new series rather than a full-feature. Perhaps it was due to Mike Judge being busy with King of the Hill and his features Office Space and Idiocracy. Whatever the case, in this nostalgic episode of WTF Happened to this Movie (written by Brad Hamerly, edited by Cesar Gomez & narrated by Mathew Plale), we look back at how the film came together and how the power couple of the moment, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, ended up being part of the voice cast.

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review six films from the 1990s to 2000 that released for the first time on Blu-ray. We start with the animated "Rover Dangerfield," (1991) where Rodney Dangerfield's hallmark humor is impeccably tailored to tickle the funny bones of both kids and adults alike.  Next we review the first film released by MTV Films, "Joe's Apartment," (1996) starring a young Jerry O'Connell and a host of singing cockroaches.  From December we start with the excellent, "Saving Grace" (2000), a Indie darling that should not be forgotten, with standout performances from Brenda Blethyn and Craig Ferguson.  We then review the romp "A Midwinter's Tale" (1995), directed by Kenneth Branagh.  This mock-u-mentary style film is a delightful look behind-the-scenes of indie Shakespearean theater. We wrap up our reviews with two films released in November.  First is the historical drama "Rapa-Nui" (1994) from Kevin Costner's Tig Productions and directed by Kevin Reynolds.  Filmed on location on Easter Island, this story of Polynesian history is a visual  and dramatic delight.  And our last film is the historical romance "In Love and War" (1996) starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and directed by Richard Attenborough.  This beautifully shot film is based on the true-life romance of a young Earnest Hemingway and his experiences in Italy during World War I.We provide a review of each film,  the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.Purchase links:ROVER DANGERFIELD (1991)  Blu-rayJOE'S APARTMENT (1996) Blu-raySAVING GRACE (2000) Blu-rayA MIDWINTER'S TALE (1995) Blu-rayRAPA-NUI (1994) Blu-rayIN LOVE AND WAR (1996) Blu-ray The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. Paramount Pictures to revisit 'The Longest Yard' with a new remake

Paramount Pictures is set to take another shot at remaking the classic sports comedy-drama film The Longest Yard. The original 1974 version, which earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination, was a delicate balance of comedy and drama, starring Burt Reynolds as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a former football star facing a prison sentence. In 2005, a remake directed by Peter Segal, with Adam Sandler in the lead role, took a lighter, more comedic approach and featured a star-studded cast. Despite its commercial success, Sandler publicly confessed that the remake couldn't hold a candle to the original. Now, Paramount Pictures is giving it another go, led by Gunpowder & Sky's Van Toffler and former MTV Films boss David Gale, with Rodney Barnes penning the script. The new iteration aims to bring a fresh perspective to this prison football story, offering a unique take on a classic narrative.

We're back after a month away, and we're coming in hot with an expanded format. It's basically just smashing the long and short shows together into one thing, but it sounds more professional if you talk about formatting. That of course doesn't mean that the talk about nonsense garbage has stopped, or really been focused in any way, as this one goes everywhere. We talk about the oft-maligned 1996 Jerry O'Connell vehicle Joe's Apartment, the oeuvre of MTV Films in general, Keebler's discontinued line of pizza chips, the fact that we're apparently the number one source for information on the song "Strut" by Steven Seagal and Lady Saw, the 1986 Nico Mastorakis film The Zero Boys starring Kelli Maroney and Joe Estevez, the song "Destination Understanding" from Island of Death, new music from Novatron, Home Front, and Mats Gustafsson & Joachim Nordwall, the 1991 song "Joyride (I Saw the Film)" by Tribe, and the recent passing of noted director/wonderful maniac William Friedkin. Finally, in our main event, we discuss Sean's pick for this show: the 1982 John Frankenheimer movie The Challenge, a star-studded affair scored by Jerry Goldsmith, written by John Sayles, and starring Toshiro Mifune (and Scott Glenn, but you know... Mifune). Despite being loaded on all fronts with talent, the film flopped due to being absolutely swallowed up by the unreal number of megahits released in the summer of 1982. A true shame because this is a really good movie, and we think this is a really good episode. Enjoy? The film stars Jon Heder in the role of the titular character, a nerdy high-school student who deals with several dilemmas: befriending an immigrant who wants to be class president, awkwardly pursuing a romance with a fellow student, and living with his quirky family. The film was Hess' first full-length movie and is partially adapted from his earlier short film, Peluca. Napoleon Dynamite was acquired at the Sundance Film Festival by Fox Searchlight Pictures, who partnered up with MTV Films and Paramount Pictures for the release. Filming was done at Preston High School, and in different areas in Franklin County, Idaho, in the summer of 2003. It debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2004. Most of the situations in the movie are loosely based on the life of Jared Hess. The film's total worldwide gross revenue was $46,122,713. Today we give you a themed episode! As 2022 approaches, we dive deep into New Years-set movies through the years. We start with Michael Curtiz's influential Mystery of the Wax Museum, move over to the modern cult classic 200 Cigarettes, and finish with the 2006 remake/flop Poseidon. This is an eclectic mix! Curtiz is one of our great filmmakers and it's fascinating his Wax Museum, which came before his stone-cold classics Captain Blood, Casablanca, and The Adventures of Robin Hood. And 200 Cigarettes features perhaps the most specific, wonderful 1999-represented cast ever. Finally, Poseidon is certainly a film that was made and then released into theaters. We discuss the holiday itself and why exactly it is something we celebrate, the B-Side-y career of the sneaky interesting actor Josh Lucas, and the seminal, early run of MTV Films. We debate exactly how much heist is too much heist in a heist movie, try to figure out who thought Darius Miles should embark on an acting career, do our best to make sense of this high school's class rankings, and and remember a time when Foo Fighters stood atop the teen music mountain. This week, the Four Old Millennials are discussing MTV Films' first ever R-rated feature, "Dead Man On Campus." We wonder why they thought they could convince us these two senior citizens were college freshmen, examine the logic of Josh taking a legit psychopath over to the dorm room of the girl he has a crush on, worry for Linda Cardellini's safety, and express our dismay that the movie treats suicide and mental illness as running punchlines. Taking us back to an era when they MTV Films logo was all too common, this one proved to still be a fun Adam Sandler outing 15 years after it's release.  Following up on that we tackle 2000s "The Replacements" and opinions are pretty split. Did John Madden do this movie because he needed money? And could they have made this movie without Gene Hackman by just CGIing some of his footage from "Hoosiers" in?  All this and more on this week's outing!

We’re kicking off August with the coming-of-age classic The Wood (1999). Directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar, Dope, The Mandalorian) and starring a who’s-who of young Black It girls and boys of the late ’90s and early aughts, The Wood was the seventh film produced by MTV Films and part of a barnstorming spate of four movies released by the newly formed studio that year alone. Black coming-of-age films, outside of the so-called “homeboy” canon, were sparse before this era and seem to have receded back into rarity since. Grossing over $25 million on $6 million budget, the film’s relative box office success eerily belies its lack of currency in mainstream culture. But, like a lot of films from the era, its cult status among Black millennials is unequivocal and a testament to Todd Boyd’s and Famuyiwa’s ability to write young Black best friends whose universal earnestness and love for each other transcend the white-perceived social barriers of their environment. The Wood’s version of 1980s Inglewood is less a counterpoint to the South Central L.A. of Boyz n the Hood and more a vibrant, necessary companion text, of which there should have been many more. From an industry standpoint, it’s a classic indie film from the height of the American indie wave that’s rarely mentioned in conversations around more widely adored coming-of-age films of the era like Dazed And Confused, Rushmore, or Slums of Beverly Hills. ⁣ ⁣ Watch along with us as Week 5 of Black Is Not A Genre explores the under-examined universality of the Black Bildungsroman, the invisibility of the Black middle class, and the magic of Black Los Angeles. And, stay tuned this Friday for Episode 5 of the BINAG podcast. Featured guests: Matthew S. Robinson is a Washington, D.C. native, writer, director, and playwright based in Los Angeles. He graduated from Pepperdine University in 2012 with a Bachelor’s in Media Production with an emphasis in Political Science. After making his feature directorial debut with, “My Friend Violet,” Robinson wrote and directed various short and feature-length plays. Robinson has won several awards while working with some of the most talented individuals in the LA community. His original plays, “Mary's Medicine" and "BlackBalled” won the Encore Producers award at the LA Fringe Festival in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Steven DeBose is a writer and podcaster from Austin, Texas. He has worked as a judge for the Austin Youth Film Festival, Conference Coordinator for the GTX Film Conference and most recently as director of script competitions at Austin Film Festival.

On episode 134 of Soundwaves from the Underground, SLUG chats with local and distant illustrators to find out exactly what inspires them and what kind of careers are available to cartoonists. - Often dealing with romance and bad luck, Liz Prince has a way of relating to readers through her comics. Her newest book, Alone Forever, deals with love, relationships, their eventual demise and the other problems that we, as humans, are bound to face. - Dave Chisholm is both a comic book artist and an experienced musician. Last year Dave released an album with his jazz band, Colossus. Check out the track “Science Adventure” from their self-titled release on this episode of Soundwaves. - Never one to limit himself to only a single form of expression, Dave Chisholm also releases music as a self-titled composer. This blend of jazz is more subtle and ethereal than his other projects, but is just as gripping. “Whisper,” from his 2011 release, Calligraphy, is a chilling walk through an array of sorrowful and wounded instrumentals. - Derek Hunter, another cartoonist/musician from the valley, has found a career in cartoon illustration. His most current work includes backgrounds for Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and various other creations for companies like Mattel, Disney and MTV Films. Despite keeping busy with his career, Derek also finds time to create original pieces for his website, PirateClub.com. … read more The post Episode #134 – Liz Prince, Colossus, Dave Chisholm, Derek Hunter first appeared on SLUG Magazine.
