This episode begins with a look at the germiest things in restaurants that you may want to avoid touching or at least wipe down. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/19/germ-infested-areas-restaurants_n_2159281.html Christmas is chock full of customs. Joining me to explain why we have these customs and where they came from is Brian Earl. He is host of the Christmas Past podcast https://christmaspastpodcast.com/podcast/ and author of the book Christmas Past: The Fascinating Stories Behind Our Favorite Holiday's Traditions (https://amzn.to/3FoB3bt). This podcast will focus on the art and skill of talking to kids. How do we engage in conversations that spark curiosity, foster empathy and encourage kids to embrace challenges? Let's move discussions from surface to substantial. Dr. Robyn Silverman interviews Dr. Rebecca Rolland on How to Talk to Kids about Anything today. We discuss the importance of starting mental and emotional health conversations with children from a young age, highlighting the benefits for their emotional development and future stability and happiness. In today's episode, Rebecca Rolland, a Harvard lecturer and author, emphasizes that these discussions should be ongoing and developmentally appropriate, focusing not only on negative emotions but also on the positive aspects of mental health to build resilience and empathy. Rolland encourages openness and adaptability in these talks, reassuring children they have support and an open line of communication for any emotional challenges they may face. “Just as children are constantly developing over time in, say, their ability to read, their ability to tie their shoes and do physical things, we want to think about them as developing emotions and emotional vocabulary. We wouldn't tell a 6- or 7-year-old, well, let's talk about the nuances of depression in the same way we would do that with a teenager. That wouldn't make sense to them because they don't necessarily have a framework for that.” ~Rebecca Rolland, EdD To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Help students draw on their natural resilience and raise their awareness about themselves. Counteract bias and help students celebrate the differences among others. “The idea is to be creative about what you wanna get across, about the curriculum, about your overall goals, and about how you can bridge those goals with the goals or interests of your students. Rather than saying, ‘I'm going to sit here and wait for students to come to me.' How do you create that equal bridge where students are coming with their interests, you're coming with your goals and interests, how do you actually meet in the middle?" -Rebecca Rolland Get the episode transcript here!! The Art of Talking with Your Children. Rebecca Rolland joins Michael and Tim to talk about her new book: The Art of Talking with Children.
It's becoming more and more clear how important it is for parents to talk with their kids. Simple conversations from early on have a major impact on development. And opening the door to conversations in later teen years also helps build confidence, kindness and an understanding of others. It's so easy as a parent to get bogged down in your own personal stuff that these conversations might get put on the back burner. Or you may feel like your kid's questions aren't as important. But science and research has proven they couldn't be more valuable. I'm joined this week by speech pathologist and Harvard lecturer Rebecca Rolland. She recently published a book called, 'The Art of Talking With Children: The Simple Keys to Nurturing Kindness, Creativity, and Confidence in Kids.' Rebecca was such a fantastic guest and so full of knowledge. I hope you enjoy today's conversation.

A great chat can boost your students' learning and well-being years later. Courtesy RebeccaRolland.com Rolland's new book, "The Art of Talking with Children," is an evidence-based guide that will show you how to communicate with kids to feel understood while growing into happy adults who can connect better at home or school. Special guest: Rebecca Rolland, Ed.D Science has shown that the best way to help our children become independent, confident, kind, empathetic and happy is by talking with them! Thank goodness this is true since we've been discussing talking with kids about all kinds of topics since 2017 on this podcast. However, so often, parents , educators and caregivers are at a loss and have trouble communicating with children. Conversations can feel trivial, forced or strained- or worse, can drum up and become marked by constant conflict and butting heads. So how can we get in the habit of having meaningful conversations with kids of all ages? How do we spark curiosity, foster empathy and encourage kids to embrace challenges through talking with kids? And given the need for much more understanding around issues of gender, race, sexuality and different family structures, how do we engage in discussions that can celebrate differences while also understanding and being empathic to how those differences might be treated in this world. For all of this, we have the pleasure of interacting with Rebecca Rolland today. The post The Art and Skill of Talking with Kids with Rebecca Rolland, Ed.D appeared first on drrobynsilverman.com.
