Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Annie: For the last 3 years, I have had consistent mucus in my throat. Sometimes it gets worse after eating fat like avocado and nut butter. The mucus is always clear if I spit it out. I thought it was acid reflux, but I am not sure why it would be affected by fats. Thank you for your help in advance!   Gina: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am 33 & survived breast cancer last year, 6 months post partum. I had a lumpectomy, radiation and now hormonal therapy, which has been recommended for 10 years due to my age. Should I be concerned about heavy metals in this monthly injection? Doing the 21 day detox and curious of other pointers you may have that could be helpful while dealing with this long term. I've also struggled to lose weight in all this despite a very clean diet and exercising 5 days per week. My A1C is now 6.2 when it was normal prior to medication. Looking for guidance on how to further manage my blood sugar. I was interested in fatlossity but my Dr said “it has too many ingredients” and advised me against taking this. Can you speak a bit about fatlossity? Thank you! P.s. I've enrolled in IHP :)   Lynette: What do you know/think of the Perfect Amino products created by Dr. David Minkoff (bodyhealth.com)? I've heard him speak on several podcasts and am curious about his Perfect Amino products. Is there validity to them? Worth trying? Just curious about your thoughts and insights. Thanks so much for all the info and knowledge you share!   Lucy: Hi there, my niece (25yrs, very healthy and body aware) has had an on and off stinging and fuzzy feeling in her mouth since August. She has bloods done, mouth swabs, seen dentists, Dr's. They all say nothing is wrong it is her imagination. She says it is so unpleasant when it happens and needs to find a solution? Is there a podcast relating to this please? I can't find one in the search option. Which tests would you recommend? Thank you.   Robert: I did Big 5 and have adrenal fatigue/very high cortisol. I have been fasting recently (skipping breakfast daily or doing 24 hour with only DNS powder). i have lost weight doing this and had several other benefits. Though I noticed if i don't have breakfast, and I am doing a stressful activity at work (i.e. public speaking), i shake and feel faint. i don't get this if i have breakfast. Further, my white blood cells and neutrophils were low on a few recent blood tests. Despite getting benefits from fasting, should i not do it as often due to side effects like feeling faint/shaking & low WBC/neutrophils which i heard can be caused by stress or fasting? Would it be better if i start my fast after dinner rather than skip breakfast, or should i stop fasts until i reduce stress levels? Thanks!   Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3026 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? As a clinical faculty member at the University, he also served as co-director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Palomar Medical Center. For 12 years Dr. Minkoff worked in Emergency Medicine at the Community Hospital of New Port Richey, Florida which ranks in the top 100 hospitals in the U.S. This emergency room has a chest pain center considered in the top 1 percent of all such centers in the U.S. In addition to his traditional medical training, Dr. Minkoff has extensive post-graduate training in Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He is an expert in Functional Medicine, Chelation, Allergy Elimination, European Biological Medicine, Neural Therapy, Longevity/Aging Medicine, Enderlein Therapy, Insulin Potentiated Therapy, and more. In 2000, he founded BodyHealth, a nutrition company which offers a unique range of dietary supplements to the public and practitioners. He is also currently on the board of Home Health Works, an agency which offers in-home care and which was founded by Dr. Minkoff's wife, Sue Minkoff R.N. In this episode, Dr. David Minkoff dives into oral healthcare and what you need to know about bone density if you have ever had a wisdom tooth extraction. Plus, Dr. Minkoff explains how 100% of root canals are actually infected. Normal bone density on a CT scan is zero. If there's a hole, it starts going into minus levels of bone.  The body will put in biotoxins when there's an open hole, and you get infections there.  The wisdom teeth will also affect the brain. So you'll want to make sure there are no infections.  [18:30] Did You Know That 100% of Root Canals Are Infected?  A tooth is an organ; each tooth is like a lung, brain, or heart.  The pulp of the tooth is where the nerves are.  If the cavity breaks through the enamel and gets into the pulp, the nerve gets inflamed because there's an infection in there that hurts.  Not many people will put up with a toothache that's bad for too long.  A root canal will kill the nerve and destroy the blood supply. Then, they put a metal post in the mouth. However, the infection is still there, and now you have a dead tooth.  100% of root canals are infected.  [24:20] Looking For A New Dentist? These Are The Things You Need To Know Ask your dentist if they are a member of IAOMT.  Learn more about IAOMT here: https://iaomt.org/ Also, ask if your dentist does root canals. If they do, you don't want them as your dentist. If your dentist isn't a believer, then why would you see them for your care?  [35:00] Signaling Mechanisms: Understanding Satiety, Hunger, and Cravings  The body is so inundated with biological toxins from the air, water, and food. The normal signaling mechanisms of the body about satiety, hunger, and craving are all off.  When you start fasting, you will see normal regulation come back in.  Most people won't put up with being hungry for 24 hours.  If you end up fasting, good stuff will look good and bad stuff will look bad.  100% of every patient Dr. Minkoff sees in his clinic has a toxic gut.  [38:15] Amino Acid Metabolism: Whey Protein vs. Meat and Eggs  Most people are amino acid deficient.  In whey protein, the percentage of nitrogen is about 16%. If you had 100 grams of whey protein, 16 grams is measurable nitrogen.  When the amino acid enters the cell, it can be made into a protein.  Whey protein is inefficient. However, meat and fish are about 33% net nitrogen utilized.  Eggs are 48% net nitrogen utilized. [54:35] What PerfectAminos Can Do For Your Gut Health and Muscle Building   Your doctor is unlikely to know anything about amino acids.  There has never been any significant reaction or allergy to Dr. Minkoff's products. Dr. Minkoff enlightens us to the problems that face us when we cannot break down dietary protein to its smallest parts - amino acids.  Our bodies absorb amino acids and use those to make all the unique protein molecules used in our bodies.  We have an estimated 50,000 unique protein molecules.  We need these for all the enzymes in our bodies, all our immune system components, all of our body and bone structure and much more.  Ironically, in order to break down protein in our digestion system, we require the enzymes made of protein. Listen to how we can break the catch 22 and learn how proteins and amino acids function.

She would constantly swing between constipation and diarrhea.  Acquiring viral encephalitis at age 13 and being hospitalised for a week was a landmark time in Kirsty's life. Gut problems became a constant issue from then on. Her husband, who is a nurse, told her constant diarrhea is not normal. So, she dabbled with various diets but didn't stick with them. It's not until they found out about her son's conditions that Kirsty took concrete action. [09:55] Kirsty's Son's Autism Spectrum Diagnosis At 13 months, Noah suffered from infections and tummy troubles. Fortunately, his recovery progressed well. But at 18 months, Noah became completely non-verbal, underwent behavioural changes, and suffered from constant diarrhea. The paediatrician said that Noah's condition was normal. However, his condition only worsened.  Then, Noah was diagnosed with autism. This gave them funding for treatment and support. [13:56] Discovery of an Underlying Gut Issue The possibility that Kirsty passed on her diarrhea issue to Noah was always at the back of her mind. They found a doctor who listened to their suspicion that Noah has an underlying condition.  After testing Noah's stool sample, they discovered that he had Clostridium difficile, a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This bacteria releases endotoxin that compromises the gut and the blood-brain barrier. They found that the endotoxin in Noah's body had attached to the brain receptors responsible for socialisation and learning. [17:21] Undergoing Fecal Microbial Transplant (FMT) Kirsty and her two children participated in a research study in Canada. There, they underwent a fecal microbial transplant. Their guts were flushed with antibiotics to get rid of everything, including the Clostridium difficile. These were then replaced with donors' microbes.  Kirsty's children were the youngest people to undergo FMT. While they were there, Noah started becoming more sociable. Not everyone needs to undergo FMT to recover their gut. There are now many ways to modulate the gut, one of which is eating healthy foods. Tune in to the full episode to hear more about Noah's recovery and development as a teen! [25:42] Getting Diagnosed with PANDAS PANDAS is an autoimmune neurological condition associated with an antigen. Both Kirsty and Noah got diagnosed with it. It stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. Listen to the full podcast to learn more about PANDAS and how Kirsty acquired it! [33:13] Looking After Your Microbiome Test, don't guess. Get a comprehensive stool analysis. Kirsty uses two tests for her clients. You need to be intentional in choosing healthy foods. Include fermented and nourishing food for your gut. Also, remember that diets do not work. No amount of willpower can go against our primal built-in set point. [46:10] Two Types of Fermented Food and Their Effect on the Body The first is the wild type. This includes histamine-forming foods or lactate-forming metabolites. Our gut has microbes that consume histamine and help us not develop histamine issues. The second is uncultured ferment. These are specific ferments in a controlled environment with specifically chosen strains. People struggling with lactate-forming metabolites should choose D-lactate bacteria strains.  These strains break down and down-regulate histamines without causing reactions. [48:50] Incorporating Fermented Healthy Foods into Your Diet You can start with small amounts of uncultured ferment to build out your microbiome.  Then, you can start dabbling with wild ferments. Kirsty develops cultures with nine different strains that have efficacy for autoimmune, neurological, and digestive conditions. Kultured Wellness offers a starter culture that you make yourself. Listen to the full episode to know the ingredients and the procedure! [53:05] On Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes One capsule of probiotics in the market has around 3 million CFU or colony-forming units.  Meanwhile, a cup of Kultured Wellness yoghurt has 41 billion CFU. The absence of digestive enzymes and stomach acid is a major problem today. Fermented food helps with this problem because it has already been pre-digested from the fermenting process.  Fermented food doesn't require a robust amount of digestive enzymes. In fact, it supports the excretion of stomach acid. [57:06] Parting Advice  Be curious and try your best to connect with your body. You're in a state of fight or flight all the time when you're unwell. We should not be focusing on DNA; it's the microbes that affect our DNA. Being curious, taking responsibility, owning it, and wanting more for yourself is crucial.   7 Powerful Quotes ‘I have seen how important your gut is and how it can completely change the pathway of your life. It can completely change who you are as a person.' ‘You don't just suddenly wake up one day and you've got cognition issues; that's coming from somewhere.' ‘So the first thing is just test, don't guess... We [can] really find out what is happening in our gut, and we can find out what it is doing to the rest of our body.' ‘If you want to make change, you've got to front up to make the change.' ‘If they don't include fermented foods and they don't include nourishing foods for their gut, they're relying on willpower. No one can get anywhere with willpower.' ‘It's what everyone finds hard and doesn't know, is that you should never rely on willpower. Diets will never work.' ‘DNA is not what we should be focusing on. It's actually the microbes and those fungi and viruses that make up our whole body that actually interacts through that.'   About Kirsty Kirsty Wirth is the founder of Kultured Wellness and an expert in cultures, gut health, and probiotics. This process has to been done very safely to prevent harming a person”, replied David.Cholesterol is not the enemy-28:11“Why should we not shy away from cholesterol?” I asked David.“Most of the cholesterol in the body is made by the liver. A person needs cholesterol to make some important hormones in the body, such as cell membranes. It is a myth that cholesterol is harmful to the heart and causes cardiac arrest, in more than 50% of the people who had heart attacks had normal cholesterol percentage in their bodies. The therapy of reducing it does not help anyone live longer. Many people know that protein is essential for optimum health, but most assume they are consuming enough from food.   So why the need for an amino acid supplement?   The simple answer is that – yes, you do get good quality from foods such as eggs, meat, fish and nuts but much of the protein in food is not converted into body protein – it just makes waste that the body has to get rid of plus extra calories.   Almost everyone is protein deficient without realizing it – it plays out as leaky gut, poor skin health, a nagging injury that won't heal in the athlete, brittle bones in  menopausal women, or constant colds in children.   Protein deficiency is very often something you are aware of, but you just can't identify and neither does your doctor. Not getting enough protein may mean low hormones, or a low immune system and risk of disease or cancer. So what's the solution?   Source is everything!!! PerfectAmino is an amino acid supplement that is 99% utilized by the body to make protein. No other form of protein comes close!   Our guest Dr. David Minkoff is an American physician and best selling author. He is the co-founder and medical director of LifeWorks Wellness Center and a regular speaker at numerous conferences on health, wellness, Lyme disease, ozone therapy, alternative cancer treatment, and autoimmune diseases.   In 2019 Dr. David Minkoff wrote The Search for the Perfect Protein  In this book Dr. Minkoff provides a new appreciation and understanding of these vital components of life and wellness. Alex asks @ 00:27:47 What is the best way to use Bitter Melon in terms of dosage, usage and should take it by itself? ~ In my response, I refer to MPX100. Allison asks @ 00:33:31 She began taking TianChi after hearing about it on the podcast in October of 2012 and took it pretty consistently until about the beginning of January 2013. After coming off it she has experienced unreal hormonal swings, PMS that is amplified, and two full periods this month separated by only a week. She's wondering if something in the adaptogenic herbs may have caused her hormones to go haywire when I stopped taking them. She is currently trying to get pregnant so this weirdness is kind of putting a kink in the works. She's been to an ob/gyn and had a pelvic exam and other tests and found nothing. ~ In my response, I refer to TianChi. Anonymous asks @ 00:39:43 He is 38 years old and races 70.3s and yet he doesn't have the libido he once had. He knows he isn't 19 any more but still… he would like to try some natural remedies. He tried Vit D3 (life extension) and some Cod Liver Oil (nordic naturals) and the Horny Goat Weed extract (NOW). Are those good brands? Is there a more pure form to get Horny Goat Weed? Do you think it even works? ~ In my response I list: 1. Oysters 2. Cold Showers 3. Any nitric oxide, citrulline or arginine blend, or dark chocolate/red wine. 4. Kamagra: www.FasterKam.com www.KamagraFast2.com 5. Heavy Lifting and/or Sprinting + Avoiding Chronic Cardio 6. The right bike seat. 7. Avoid porn. 8. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy with a compounded pharmacist, particularly using the www.thewileyprotocol.com OR liposomal progesterone for women. 9. Avoid large meals  10. Herbal blends: RenewMale stacked with TianChi. Eric asks @ 01:01:32 Is wondering about Finasteride (or Propecia). What happens to the testosterone that is left? Does it mean that he has more testosterone in his body? Should he be worried about it converting to estrogen? Carlos asks @ 01:08:15 He is experiencing bad allergies this year from pollen. Is wondering if you have any recommendations for natural products or vitamins that will help with allergies. ~ In my response, I mention www.naet.com, Sinus Buster, and this post on asthma that I did with Dr. David Minkoff. Jason asks @ 01:15:23Is using the Little Method of interval training on the treadmill. After he does the interval training he likes to do some sustained cardio training. Should he avoid mushrooms and other fungi? What else should he avoid? What supplements might help? In my response to Keith, I recommend: -Metal Free Heavy Metal Detoxification Formula combined with Body Detox - follow use instructions for these exactly as on bottles. Dr. David Minkoff recommends to take Metal Free in the morning and Body Detox before bed. -6mg of iodine per day -1-2 servings edible clay per day (i.e. Edible Earth) -Oral magnesium in supplemental form (around 400-600mg/day, or until you get loose stool) -A high quality greens supplement -Full spectrum antioxidant -High quality omega 3 + Vitamin D ad Vitamin A supplementation (i.e. cod liver oil). Recommend SuperEssentials and TwinLab Cod Liver Oil. Finally, I highly recommend Dr. Mark Sircus's book: "Nuclear Toxicity Syndrome". ------------------------------------------------------ Toni asks: Husband is an endurance bike racer who is not sleeping well and is constantly fatigued, but doctors won't acknowledge it as real. What can help? In my response to Toni, I reference this article I did on adrenal fatigue: What To Do When You're Overtrained, including this anecdote: 1. Frequent Cold Exposure – Cold immersion can lower inflammation, and markers of inflammatory damage such as CRP or interleukin – which allows the body to bounce back faster from an overreached state. In my case, I have access to a very cold river that currently runs at about 40-45 degrees Farenheit, so when I saw those HRV scores begin to drop, I began full body immersion for 20-30 minutes a day, 1-2x/day (you can also achieve this in an ice bath if you live in a warmer climate without access to a cold body of water). I combined with wearing 110% compression tights and shirt filled with ice sleeves while I was sitting at home working. 2. Adaptogenic Herbs – I use a Chinese Adaptogenic Herb complex called Tian Chi, and I began to double dose on an empty stomach 1-2x/day, in mid-morning and/or mid-afternoon. The ingredients of Tian Chi include compounds that help to relieve adrenal gland stress and support proper adrenal function, including ashwaganda, eleuthero, epemedium and gotu kola. These type of compounds are incredibly effective at restoring function to your adrenal glands when you've been asking yourself to churn out adrenaline, epinephrine, norepinephrine, etc. with day after day of hard training. 3. Deep Sleep – During deep sleep, your body releases large amounts of growth hormone for repair and recovery, and initiates cellular turnover that can speed up removal of “junk” from a taxed musculoskeletal system. Once I saw my HRV score drop, my goal was to get myself into a deep sleep phase as quickly as possible, and I did this by using an Earthpulse Sleep Machine device to activate my “deep sleep” Delta brain waves, along with sleeping in a very dark room, using 500mg magnesium before bed, and making sure to use my blue-light blocking glasses at any point after 4pm in the afternoon. 4. Anti-Inflammatory Diet – Because they result in a net acidic load when you metabolize them, pro-inflammatory foods will increase inflammation and increase your pain from the inflammation. These include processed meats, foods high in omega 6 fatty acids like roasted seeds and nuts, pastries and cereals, starches, and even nightshade plants like regular potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. When you're injured or overtrained and looking for every available advantage, you should instead prioritize foods with natural anti-inflammatory properties, like dark-skinned fruits and vegetables (pomegranates, cherries, blueberries, plums, artichokes, spinach and broccoli are excellent), high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (cold-water fish, cod liver oil, fish oil, etc.) and natural herbal anti-inflammatories like turmeric, curcumin, garlic and ginger, or something like Capraflex, which has all that. Jeff asks: How can you recover from a lateral meniscus removal? He has some hyaluronic acid and capraflex. In my response to Jeff, I mention this free meniscus repair rehab program pdf. ------------------------------------------------------ Jenna asks: Are there any athletic or performance benefits from vibration plates? Can you lose weight from just standing on it? In my response, I mention Power Plate vibration platforms. ------------------------------------------------------ Michael asks: What does Ben think of the "Elevation Training Mask", specifically the 2.0 version? In my response, I mention the Elevation Training Mask. Bree asks: What is the difference between sprouting and soaking? ------------------------------------------------------ Augie asks: What are your top RSS feeds for exercise, performance, fitness, diet, etc? -Fitness.AllTop.com (varies) -StoneHearthNewsletters.com (varies) -TheEatingAcademy.com (Peter Attia) -PerfectHealthDiet.com (Paul Jaminet) -Cholesterol-and-health.com (Chris Masterjohn) -International Medical Veritas Association (Mark Sircus) -LifeHacker.com (varies) -TrackYourPlaque  (Dr. William Davis) -Everymantri.com (Roman Mica) -EndurancePlanet.com -BenGreenfieldFitness.com ------------------------------------------------------ Deb asks: What to do about sugar with coffee addiction? In my response to Deb, I recommend: -VIDEO: 5 Powerful Calorie Control Tricks To Help You Eat Less Food: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2011/10/appetitecontrol/ -VIDEO: 5 Ways To Suppress Your Appetite Without Taking Any Special Pills or Capsules: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2011/05/5-ways-to-suppress-your-appetite-without-taking-any-special-pills-or-capsules/ -PODCAST: How To Stop Carbohydrate Cravings In Their Tracks: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2011/08/episode-160-how-to-stop-carbohydrate-cravings-in-their-tracks/ -PODCAST: Inner Circle Free Episode: How To Stop Sugar & Carbohydrate Cravings In Their Tracks: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2010/10/inner-circle-podcast-3-how-to-stop-sugar-carbohydrate-cravings-in-their-tracks/ -ARTICLE: A Simple Six-Step System for Eliminating Food Cravings: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2010/05/a-simple-six-step-system-for-eliminating-food-cravings/ -ARTICLE: How To Fight Candy Cravings: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2012/10/how-to-fight-candy-cravings/ Finally, I recommend Deb check out The Diet Dominator at http://www.thedietdominator.com ------------------------------------------------------ Panka says: I want to increase my body weight, am super-skinny, and want to become a mesomorph from an ectomorph. What would be a good diet and exercise plan? In my response to Panka, I mention my book "Get Fit Guy's Guide To Achieving Your Ideal Body" at http://www.GetFitGuy.com ------------------------------------------------------ Seth asks: How to interpret your training logs and use them to get better? In my response to Seth, I mention Sami Inkinen's "Incurable Data Geek" and Joe Friel's Training blog. Mention things like cardiac drift, average power/speed, RPE, recovery time what I personally do: heart rate variability, how fast I ride to the YMCA, how fast I can do 10x30s sprint on treadmill, how fast I can swim 10x100 ------------------------------------------------------ Craig wants to know how to maintain a high run cadence. ------------------------------------------------------ Thomas wants to know if you could increase your risk of heart attack from cold exposure since when you train in the cold the cold weather on your torso speeds your heart rate up but cold on your face slows your heart rate down. He wants to know if he should cover his hands and feet. ------------------------------------------------------ 7 year old Lucas wants to know what he should eat before his hockey games. In my response, I mention my article: 5 Ways That Workout Nutrition Should be Different For Young People and Children ------------------------------------------------------ Joe wants to know why his body temperature is down to 92.6 degrees. Also, if you're in the first two weeks of your cycle your temperature will be about 1/2 degree lower than the second half. Even malnutrition and starvation can cause your body temperature to be low, but it's probably because the body down regulates the thyroid so you'll live longer. In my response to Joe, I mention WellnessFX or DirectLabs for getting these kind of tests done, and also recommend a Spectracell analysis. After the 1/2 marathon I took a couple months off of running completely and just started running again 3 weeks ago. The swelling/water retention went away when I wasn't running but now is back again. It is worse after sprints. Any thoughts? Kyle Kranz asks: What is the difference between taking a supplement that contains all the essential amino acids (hemp protein in my vegan case) and taking a BCAA supplement? BCAAs are included in the hemp or any other supplements with all of the amino acids, so would a person be better off just taking a full A.A. supplement instead of only BCAAs? In my response to Kyle, I mention Master Amino Pattern, or MAP. pepepacoluis @bengreenfield. Hi Ben. What do you think about the 4life transfer factor products? Mike asks: Ben, I just recently re-listened to podcast 105 in which you interviewed David Minkoff. I have been dealing with a low back issue for over a year now and have tried every conceivable avenue to resolve. Much of the pain started at a time shortly after which I had lowered my stem to get more aerodynamic. I now wonder if I may have strained some ligaments which are the root cause of spasms and other referred pains that I experience when in hip flexion. Have you any thoughts or experience with prolotherapy? Patrick asks: I have a 17 mile loop I like to run and don't want to try to stretch it out any further than that. I've heard several pros never run longer than 16-17 and add intervals to their long runs rather than additional volume. What can I add to my current loop without adding more base volume and without compromising high-end aerobic fitness? Tom asks: I'm running the Boston Marathon on April 18, 2011, and 19 days later doing the St. George Ironman. How long does it take to RECOVER from a marathon, and what would you recommend for recovery. Thanks, p.s. I'm 57 years old, and would like to qualifly again for Boston with its new program, but my main Goal is doing the best I can at St. George Ironman.... In my response to Tom, I recommend he read this"Lightning Speed Recovery Secrets" article. Kim asks: I read that Xanthan Gum and/or Guar Gum can be used to thicken smoothies. I found both ingredients online from Bob's Red Mill, which has natural products. However, I've always thought of these two ingredients as additives. What is your take on using a tablespoon or two in a daily smoothie? Also, would you prefer Xanthan Gum over Guar Gum? Anything else you might use to thicken a smoothie? John asks: What alternatives are there to barbell squats? Here is some background: I'm 22 years old and have been lifting weights 3-5 times a week for three years. I've always had trouble with this particular exercise because of pain under my left scapula. About a decade ago I was diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine, so I am assuming that this pain is related to my scoliosis. The doctor who diagnosed me said that the condition was not severe enough for treatment. I don't disagree with his diagnosis or his advice about treatment; however the same shoulder that is experiencing pain while performing a squat is also my higher shoulder. Because of this pain I mainly use lunges and leg presses for leg strength. Hi I'm Brian and I've been listening to your podcast for the past 6 months. I've recently joined swim in high school as a junior and have found it difficult to fit in lifting weights in my schedule, since I swim Monday through Friday for two hours a day. When should I lift weights and what exercises can I do to become a better swimmer? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com. Listener Chandra asks: About a month ago, I started feeling hungry all the time. Two things happened in my life around this time. One, I removed wheat, dairy, and soy from my diet. Two, I hit distance in my marathon training that I have never done before (the big 18 miler). I immediately associated my hunger with the lack of wheat so after a week of not being able to get enough food to feel satisfied, I added the wheat back to my diet. I did not see any difference in the hunger at all. I changed my weight loss rate from 2 lbs./week (1250 cals/day) to maintaining weight (~2200 cals/day) and ate my exercise calories. I continued to have an appetite increase. I do not want to increase my caloric intake to a level that would result in cessation of weight loss because I still have ~35 pounds to lose. Should I be eating my exercise calories? Should I be allowing myself even more calories while training for the marathon? What is your opinion on the increase in my appetite? In my response to Chandra, I recommended my book "Holistic Fueling For Endurance Athletes", which is available at http://www.mindsettriathlon.com , http://www.marathondominator.com and http://www.triathlondominator.com Listener Lee asks: I just wondered whether you had any diet advice for those of us who suffer from psoriasis? Is there anything in particular that can help to prevent auto-immune reactions like this? Actually, one other thing, the food allergy testing that you recommended recently, would it be possible to access that from  Australia? I don't know what the rules are regarding international stool postage! belde024 asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield I read Born to Run and now I'm interested in barefoot running. What is your take on it, and do you think it is worth trying? In my response, I reference my barefoot running interview with Tellman Knudson. neworleansview asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield Ok 42 220 6ft tall resting hr 46-50 when running should my hr go to 140 with an easy jog? Listener Christine asks: "Is there a type of exercise that is better than others for dealing with stress and counteracting the negative effects of cortisol? Is anaerobic better than aerobic? Are high intensity workouts better than longer, low intensity workouts?" psaljoughian asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield i hear leucine w/o the presence of glucose causes an insulin release. Should I not be taking bcaa's before a fasted workout? Listener Scott asks: I have just purchased your triathlon dominator package and have a couple of questions. First, I am planning on doing the 70.3 in Galveston next April and was wondering if I should decrease the workouts for it or do the whole thing? And second have you ever looked at an energy drink called SPIZ, www.spiz.net , I have used it on some sprint and Olympic distance races with good results and would like your opinion of it. Listener Edwin asks: I am a Triathlete who has had a ACL reconstruction and am looking to preserve my mobility as long as I can. There was a huge GAIT study in the effectiveness of Glucosimine HCL and it showed the supplement was no better than a placebo. So am I wasting my time with the supplement? Also ASU Avocado-Soybean-Unsaponifiables have had use in europe and are gaining some popularity here in America? What are your thoughts on ASU? In my response to Edwin, I mention the CapraFlex from http://www.doctorschoicenaturally.com (use 5% discount code BGF) Listener Amy asks: I've recently hired a personal trainer (in June), and I work out 6x per week, as well as restrict calories to 1400-1600 per day. I've lost 14 lbs since June 16th. I take Depakote and wonder if it's causing me problems losing weight. I have to lose about 80 more lbs. I see you mention Depakote in your ebook, but you don't mention how to combat it. Do you have any tips? Listener Colin asks: Have a few quick questions about my workout plan. For my lower body workout i do stepups, lunges, inner and outer thigh machine and heel raises, standing and sitting. Is that enough for a lower body workout. i also have rotator cuff issues and iv'e been trying to devise a upper body workout, that doesn't make my rotator cuff worse. Any suggestions? Listener Chris asks: My first question has to do with foods to avoid for people with diabetes.  I recently found out my mom has type 2 diabetes, and have heard that dairy, although having a low glycemic index, can have a spiking affect of the insulin response, or something like that.  Does that sound familiar?  Should she avoid dairy?  Are there other foods that should be avoided that are less common sense than high GI foods for those with diabetes? Secondly, I just bought a fixed gear bike for running errands around town and for general biking pleasure.  Would there be any training benefits to riding a fixie or things I can do with it that I normally couldn't do with a freewheel hub that can make me a better cyclist?  Or should I just use it as a practical means of transport and fun, and leave the training for another time? Listener Graeme asks: I find myself eating all the time, I really struggle to go 2+ hours without 'feeding' so I have experimented in changing my breakfast meal.  I usually have porridge with red berries and muesli mixed in.  I eat at 9 and by 12 am starving and end up eating a big lunch.  To mix things up, I have tried eating a bagel with a large coating of peanut butter, on a couple of mornings including today, and do not seem to get hungry for 3-4 hours and also no energy/glucose rush straight after that I sometimes feel after the porridge , it also seems to really curb my cravings at lunchtime.  I have not looked into calorie counting on this although my hunch is that the calorie dense peanut butter may be a little bigger calorific meal. Listener hanoncs asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield Do you think jogging with a hooded sweatshirt on will make me lose more non water weight? I know it will make me lose more weight, But is it only water weight? Thank you! Listener David asks: I have been cycling for many years and just this year began dabling in sprint and olympic distance triathlons which has required improving my swim and run.  While I have enjoyed this season with some success, I have been asking myself the question, what next?  Realizing that this decision is my own and weighs heavily on my desires and own enjoyment, from a physical, competitive perspective, could you describe the advantages one might have and what body types are typically most succcessful in cycling vs. running vs. sprint/olympic triathlons vs. half/full ironmans? Listener Meredith asks: 1) how many pills are you popping in a day?! (12 amino acid capsules?!) I'm very much a real foodist (I vote Michael Pollan on the show if possible!) and I'd prefer trying to get most of my nutrients in actual absorbable food form and non-processed. however, for heavy training i'm willing to possibly supplement a bit if it will increase endurance and reduce soreness so: 2) what would the bare bones essentials be if you wanted to pop as few pills/powders as possible? 2) I think (uneducated hunch) the stomach pains I get after taking a gel might have to do with the lab created aminos. I've tried them during runs at all times of day and all levels of gastric emptiness to the same effect. I've had better luck eating a granola bar or stinger honey chews during a 12-14 miler, but i'd prefer not to carry those or pick them from my teeth during 26 miles if possible. help! 3) follow-up to gels: i've been told that you should absolutely not mix your electrolyte drink with your gel as that will create some intestinal distress, but the same folks say to take some gatorade at some point during your run. any advice on how to intersperse these time-wise? Listener Karen asks: I have heard you say that after a workout, you should eat 2 calories of carbs per pound of your target weight, and 1/2 of that for protein ( so 1 calorie of protein per pound). My question is: Is this ratio the same regardless of the type of workout you just did? Does it vary based on intensity and duration? My workouts don't vary much as far as the time, usually 1 hour or a little more. Some days I just lift weights, others I may do an hour spin class, or I may swim for a little more than one hour. Is my recovery meal the same? Also, can you suggest some products that will provide this type of ratio in a recovery meal? Listener Kara calls in and wants to know difference between probiotics and digestive enzymes. In my response, I mention the digestive enzymes from Millennium Sports (http://www.millenniumsport.net) and the probiotics from Mt. Capra (Caprabiotics)  from http://www.doctorschoicenaturally.com (use 5% discount code BGF). Do you have a question for Ben? Can you explain this? Anne asks: In your Low Carbohydrate Guide for Triathletes book you recommend a low carb lunch, but I assume on days I do weight training just before lunch (2x per week) should I add some healthy starches for lunch? Dino asks: I just wanted to ask about CLA for cutting weight in prep for a half/full marathon. JT asks: can i take greens super food powder stuff, instead of eating veggies? I hate vegetables, and need to get my greens somewhere, this sounded like a good option. In my response to JT I mention: LivingFuel SuperGreens, CapraGreens, and Enerprime. Matthew asks: What's the best method to determine a realistic healthy weight? In my response to Matthew, I reference this ideal body weight calculator. Melanie asks: A friend of mine has started taking some products put out by a company called Zija International. They have some capsules and teas and "energy" powders. These products supposedly promote weight loss and energy. The primary ingredient in most of their products is moringa. I did a bit of research on moringa and supposedly it is a miracle cure for everything. I did not come across any alarming side effects. My friend says she feels more energy with this stuff. Have you heard of this company's products and any knowledge about the "miracles" of moringa in general? Todd asks: I hate running, that's why I swim and box. However, I've recently started playing deck hockey that involves a lot of running. I'm getting more muscle and joint soreness after a hockey game than another activity, and it lasts a full day afterward. Do you recommend any foods, supplements, or stretches to help speed muscle recovery so I'm not so sore the next day? I'm trying not to admit I just turned 48 and am still playing hockey like I'm 16, I just don't recover as quickly. In my response to Todd, I mention Recoverease,  Extreme Endurance (use 20% discount code Greenfield), Capraflex, topical magnesium, compression, ice, and electrostimulation. Valorie asks: I'm a non-competitive runner and have been experiencing nagging piriformis pain and sciatica, which radiates down to the back of my knee, for the past 6 months. I went through a few sessions of PT ultrasound which didn't seem to affect it much, and have been foam rolling and stretching twice a day, and following runs, sitting on ice. The pain affects my running gait at the forward and rear extension of my leg and while sitting in the car, or in my office chair. I struggled to complete a marathon last weekend and am now ready to take some time off to resolve it. Will taking a few weeks off from running, along with the stretching and rolling be my cure, or is there a regimen you can suggest to rid me of this pain in the a** once and for all? Matthew asks: As a graduate student, my lab hour are extremely variable and often involve me waking in the middle of the night for a few hours of work.  When these days happen, I find myself waking with incredible hunger, more so than a normal morning craving.  Do you have any suggestions for curbing this hunger, either the before I go to bed, or when I wake up? In my response to Matthew, I mentioned Master Amino Pattern whole amino acids. Also Tekoi has a call in story about the Marathon Dominator and Ioan calls in about the Triathlon Dominator.
