It is our Privilege and Honour to have the one and only - Nick Caldwell on our podcast as part of the series: In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins! Nick is a former Australian SASR Operator - Team 2IC - Team Specialist and Successful Business Owner. Having accumulated more than 12years worth of Special Forces experience, it's safe to say that Nick is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to speaking on topics related to this environment and the impact they can have on individuals and relationships in both positive and negative ways. Coupled with not only an extremely successful career within the SAS - Nick has taken that drive, determination, resilience, integrity and humility into the business world. Establishing strong partnerships and thriving businesses through his skill and competence as a leader and his uncanny ability to strategically plan and execute effectively. Although Nick's service has been first class, there was a period of time where things were not so great and this significantly impacted him. He shares his experiences and more in the hopes of positively helping others. It's apparent that Nick's sincere desire is to leave the Sandy Beret and Winged Dagger in a better position than when he was bestowed with the honour and responsibility of wearing it. Nick shares his first hand lived experiences in more detail in relation to the Australian SAS Selection process, Cycle of training and his transition out of the unit. Along the way we have a laugh and call out a couple of funny stories which were well hidden until now lol. At the same time acknowledging some great people who have had a positive impact on our lives through their consistent example and friendship. During this conversation Nick shares powerful insights into: What qualities are sought when selecting SF operators. Memorable experiences during his selection and cycle, and prior to him going on selection and cycle. Mental strategies and tools he used when under duress. Identifying and working on weaknesses. The type of training which will allow for better transfer and application for the work required. Giving people the benefit of the doubt. The need and ability to build relationships - plus so much more. We also discuss a noticeable difference between the NZ and Australian SAS Cycle phase and we hear Nick's reasons and explanation as to why. This was hugely eye opening for Joe hearing Nick speak about this as it was completely different to the NZSAS Cycle environment and it made so much sense (in hindsight) for Joe as to why this is/would be effective. Not that the NZSAS Cycle is ineffective - that's not the case at all. But perhaps it might be worth exploring... Nick talks about his battle with Chronic fatigue - the support of his loving wife and his passion for Surfing, Shooting and Training plus a whole bunch more! Nick is a man of great integrity, loyalty, dedication, humility with a great sense of humour. Today's episode is with Nick Caldwell, VP of Engineering at Twitter. Previously, Nick was at Microsoft for 15 years, eventually becoming GM of Power BI. Nick has also held roles as Reddit's VP of Engineering and Looker's Chief Product and Engineering Officer. Between Microsoft, Reddit, Looker, and now Twitter, Nick's worked for companies with vastly different cultures. And in today's conversations, we comb through the biggest lessons from each of these orgs. With Microsoft, we unpack what Nick believes is a massively underrated approach to organizational design. He explains the company's rigorously approach to regular pruning and shaping the org chart. He also gives us an inside look at their management training and talent development, as well as what Nick calls the fairest performance review system he's seen. As Nick tells it, there was a steep learning curve when he pivoted from 15 years at Microsoft to Reddit. He doles out advice for other folks getting their bearings after a big career move. He also explains how Reddit's mission-driven culture informs his approach to leadership at Twitter. Finally, with Looker, Nick unpacks his biggest lessons from leading both the product and engineering teams, which offered him a unique perspective on how these two orgs that are often at odds can properly team up. It's an incredibly wide-reaching conversation, so there's something for pretty much everyone. Whether you're interested in the cultural practices that power some of the world's biggest companies, or you're a manager looking to level up, or you're an engineer with goals to take on leadership, Nick's got plenty of advice and insider stories to share. In this episode, we talk with Nick Caldwell, the VP of Engineering at Twitter. Nick joined Twitter over the summer, after a long career building enterprise products. He now leads a team of 700 engineers on the consumer side. That presented him with a very different set of daily challenges.“Enterprise versus consumer is a very different mindset and approach that I see people struggle with if they aren't comfortable with it. But enterprise, if done correctly, is more like chess. Consumer products are just gambling, as far as I can tell. It's gambling plus, it's maybe like fantasy football,” says Nick.Nick was hired at Twitter because he’s really good at managing teams and setting product roadmaps. He got his start at Microsoft, where he worked for more than 15 years leading the data platform organization. Quentin and Steve spoke with him about those early days working in enterprise -- and how they compare to his roles at Reddit and Twitter, which have very different cultures. Episode 39 of the Hacker Noon Podcast: An interview with Nick Caldwell CPO at Looker and former VP of engineering at Reddit. Listen to the interview on iTunes, or Google Podcast, or watch on YouTube. In this episode Trent Lapinski interviews Nick Caldwell from Looker, you get to learn about big data, machine learning and AI. "Modern data stores are extremely powerful. You can put tons and tons of data into them. You can query them without losing speed. And in some cases, you can even do analytics in the database. We're just seeing this trend where the data layer is becoming more and more powerful, and Looker is riding that trend." "My favorite learning, again, was just what's going on in the data engineering space. The BigQuery to me, at that time, was just mind blowing. You dump 4-5 petabytes of data in a big data store and query it all at once. It's stunning to me. I didn't know this thing was possible. And you can do that in an affordable fashion." "My degree was focused in Machine Learning, and I think nowadays when people ask me about that sort of formal education, I tell them, 'You probably don't need it.' You can get really, really far in Machine Learning and just focus on the practical applications of it, without having to understand the underlying Mathematics of it. I think that's a really powerful thing, that abstraction." —Nick Caldwell Production and music by Derek Bernard - haberdasherband.com/production Host: Trent Lapinski - https://trentlapinski.com https://hackernoon.com/ https://community.hackernoon.com/ https://contribute.hackernoon.com/ https://sponsor.hackernoon.com/ https://podcast.hackernoon.com/ https://twitter.com/hackernoon/ https://facebook.com/hackernoon/ P.S. Recorded in the Mill Gym, this week we meet Nick Caldwell. Nick is a former Special Air Service (SAS) soldier who, at the peak of his military career, was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Nick explains about how chronic fatigue became his 'normal', and how for years he suffered through it; including on high tempo SAS operations. Nick talks about the most challenging (and unselfish) decision he ever made - to leave the SAS. From this lowest ebb, Nick was able to establish the Mill Gym, which he has since built into a location where normal people can get started on the road to elite performance, the first step of which is to get out of bed and get your feet on the floor! Finally, Nick, Ben and Tim compare an SAS Patrol against the High Performance Team model (by Pat MacMillan) .... and deliver their verdict on whether the SAS fundamental force element is, indeed, a high performance team. Welcome to the CTO Connection Podcast!StartupCTO.io was an amazing podcast, but Kevin and Miles got busy with their many other projects, so they decided to pass it along to myself.I’m an ex-CTO, a Senior Director at WeWork/Flatiron, and the founder of CTO Connection - a series of summits, meetups and an online platform where engineering leaders can connect with and learn from their peers. I’m speaking with senior engineering leaders from fast-growth tech companies on a regular basis anyway for the summits and meetups, and in the last few weeks, I recorded over fifteen new interviews with engineering leaders like Nick Caldwell, CPO at Looker, Edith Harbaugh, CEO of LaunchDarkly and Rebecca Parsons, CTO at ThoughtWorks. Look out for a new episode every couple of weeks. And if there’s ever anyone you want to see on the show - email me - peter@pbell.com - and I’ll do my best to fit them in!Editing & Post-Production by Dante32.
Australian Fitness Podcast Episode 9 – Nick Caldwell (Special Forces Operator) I had a terrific Podcast with Nick Caldwell, an Australian veteran who served for 12 years in the Australian Army, and most of that in the elite SASR, the pinnacle of Australian Special Forces, a military unit regarded around the world. But we in fact spoke mostly about his fitness facility, The Mill, in Fremantle WA, and in detail about the culture and ethos behind him, his instructors, his facility and the unique programs that he runs. To give you some insight, Nick has taken his experience and importantly his training as a Special Forces Operator and created fitness programs and fitness experiences that allow you and I, Mr. and Mrs. Civilian to experience the stress, pressure, problem solving and hopefully develop the resilience to cope better with what life throws at us. For Nick, it’s not so much about the sets, reps and rest periods, but more about the pressure, experience and opportunity to really explore our potential and our probably untapped human capacity. He runs 12, 24 and 36-hour programs, (a little different to an F45 drive through workout) but I think that’s awesome. I really think Nick and his team are onto something here, and in today’s climate of offering a point-of-difference in the Australian Fitness Marketplace, too me, he’s breaking new ground. So, if you’re listening to this and you're looking for the opportunity to go off-grid and fully dark with ex-bad-ass military guys, hit Nick up. I’m sure he’ll introduce you to a whole new level of what-the-fuck have I got myself into. Enjoy. Today’s special episode is a live fireside chat I moderated with Nick Caldwell who is the VP of Engineering at Reddit. This event was put together by the founder of the San Francisco Engineering Leadership Community, Jerry Li. SFELC is an exclusive and curated community for engineering leaders in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in early 2016, they’ve grown to 400 leaders from over 200 companies. Their mission is to create a fundamentally better way for engineering leaders to learn and connect, through community and sharing. This episode is a bit longer than my usual episodes and also includes a Q&A with the audience at the end. I want to thank Nick and Jerry for a great event and for allowing me to use this on my podcast. Listen on for a very engaging and informative conversation.

Tragedy, not calm, restlessness has erupted in our minds. Killing and racism - WELCOME TO AMERICA. The government - can they be trusted? Will Trump be the next President of the United States? POTUS? And the trust issues with the government are everywhere, not just with minorities. And here's the killing - the fewer people go to the polls, the more than likely, THE CANDIDATES THAT SHOULDN'T BE ELECTED will get in office. Do you see any - AND I MEAN ANY polititician worried that the turnout is not good? Hell, if only 25 people voted and the candidates who wanted to win the most win, why would they be upset? Polls be damned. We will probably not talk about his, but it's for sure, we are going to talk about something. KITM means KINGS IN THE MORNING 347-205-9366.
