This week's Nose got the walls wet and on fire. The producers of an upcoming biopic about Fidel Castro's exiled daughter, Alina of Cuba, reportedly did extensive heraldry and skull-shape analysis and somehow came to the conclusion that … James Franco should play Castro. The internet doesn't think that's a good idea. (Also: It's not.) And: The Rehearsal is Nathan Fielder's new HBO docu-comedy series. The show “explores the lengths one man will go to reduce the uncertainties of everyday life. With a construction crew, a legion of actors, and seemingly unlimited resources, Fielder allows ordinary people to prepare for life's biggest moments by ‘rehearsing' them in carefully crafted simulations of his own design.” And finally, a podcast-only segment on I Am Groot, Marvel's new Disney+ series of shorts (each episode is three minutes long plus credits and logos) following the adventures of Baby Groot during the period between Guardians of the Galaxy and a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 mid-credits sequence. (I'm not making this up, I swear.) I'd explain why we're doing this special segment, but the reason is very, very dumb. The powerful doc Dying to Divorce reports on the fight against domestic violence in Turkey. Filmed over five years, it tells the story of women who have both faced and are campaigning against domestic violence in Turkey. We review the film with Observer critic Simran Hans, who delves into the reputation and function of documentaries, and also the process of filmmaking as a means of activism. Anna then speaks to director Chloe Fairweather and lawyer Ipek Bozkurt, who appears in the film. Ipek emphasises that while the documentary is about Turkish women, it is the beginning of a global discussion and fight for ending violence against women everywhere. Chloe highlights how the story of these women remains compelling because there is such profound hope within the darkness of their reality. This is a rally cry for everyone who wants to put an end to gender-based violence - and who realises the power of film in spreading the message. Dying to Divorce is the UK's official Oscars entry for ‘Best International Feature Film' and ‘Best Documentary' Academy Awards and it's submitted in the BAFTA ‘Best Documentary' and ‘Film Not in the English Language' categories https://dyingtodivorce.com/ If any of the issues discussed in this episode affect you, contact https://www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk/ Become a patron of Girls on Film on Patreon here: www.patreon.com/girlsonfilmpodcast Follow us on socials: www.instagram.com/girlsonfilm_podcast/ www.facebook.com/girlsonfilmpodcast www.twitter.com/GirlsOnFilm_Pod www.twitter.com/annasmithjourno Watch Girls On Film on the BFI's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLX…L89QKZsN5Tgr3vn7z Girls On Film is an HLA production. My guest this week is the culture writer Simran Hans. As a film critic for the observer Simran has led me to see so many films I might otherwise not even have heard of, let alone been inspired to watch. Even over the course of this interview, she made a couple of incredible viewing recommendations that I scrambled to write down in the edit and am planning to watch over the next couple of days. As a fan of her fluid and engaging writing I've wanted to get Simran on the show for ages but how great a guest she would be on You Do You was made all the more stark when I listened to her chatting as a guest on the final episode of one of my favourite podcasts SRSLY just before Christmas. On the show, she provided an in-depth analysis of the merits of my most beloved Nancy Meyers' film, The Holiday. Based on that analysis alone, I thought it was pretty likely that we would get on. We get through a lot in this episode from the inexplicably enduring allure of The OC's Seth Cohen to the perceived unattainable cool of early seasons of Channel 4's Skins, to our mutual recent experience of a 1975 gig. Let's get into it!

The focus of this episode is Ernest Dickerson's still underrated 1992 drama Juice, featuring a young (pre-fame/pre-legendary) Tupac Shakur. The live portion of the show was recorded a little while back at Falmouth University's School of Film & Television but is being released now due to the episode not being based around release schedules, as the previous Claire Denis episode was. The timing though is fortuitous, with Childish Gambino's This is America song and music video being released earlier this week and bringing to the fore again questions around black identity, gun violence and black male bodies.  In the episode Neil and Dario discuss the term 'black cinema', the evolution and status of black filmmaking in American and British cinema and how complex such a discussion is from an acknowledged white standpoint.  The episode also features a clip of Dario's deep discussion about film criticism and contemporary film culture with friend of the podcast Simran Hans, which can be found in full over on our Patreon site for subscribers, as well as Neil's chat with film critic and podcaster Leslie Byron Pitt about representation in filmmaking and film criticism alongside as Basic Instinct and erotic thrillers as Leslie is one quarter of the excellent Fatal Attractions podcast.  Links: Ernest Dickerson on The Treatment podcast Angelica Bastien on Odds Against Tomorrow, a brilliant film noir about racism Wakanda Forever: Black Panther and the power of representation, by Leslie Byron Pitt (for Media Diversified)
