When Dan had to plan his mom's big 80th birthday dinner, he knew just where to take the whole family: Myrtle Beach, SC. The group of ten celebrated at Hook and Barrel, a sustainable seafood and wine restaurant owned by restaurateur Heidi Vukov, who's a legend in Myrtle Beach. She started out as a single mom who opened a small bakery, and 31 years later became the city's first James Beard semifinalist. Dan also takes his wife and kids to Tidal Creek Brewhouse, known for its ales, its burgers, and — believe it or not — their menu for dogs. This episode is sponsored by Visit Myrtle Beach. The city has more than 2,000 restaurants along 60 miles of beaches, and is now one of the major food destinations in the south. So plan your trip today! The Sporkful production team includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Kameel Stanley, and Jared O'Connell. Additional production on this episode by Grace Rubin. Send us Fan MailYou're carrying the weight, making the decisions, and showing up even when nobody sees you. That kind of pressure can either break you down or turn you into the mentor your kids remember for the rest of their lives. We're sharing 15 core truths every single mom needs in her toolkit, the kind of life lessons that protect your peace and help you parent with clarity.nnWe talk about why self-respect comes before love, how lowering your standards creates heartbreak, and why identity work matters when confidence feels shaky. Then we get practical about financial independence, because money is freedom and dependence can become silent chains. We also dig into discernment in friendships, how to spot people who show up for benefits instead of loyalty, and why ambition grows faster when you stay around people with vision.nnFrom there, we shift into emotional control and stress management: anger without control costs you, not the other person, and silence can be more powerful than words. We connect that to social media boundaries, choosing your battles, and walking away from drama. We also cover health as your greatest asset, reputation as fragile, time as your most expensive currency, and how boundaries, education, and mentorship can save you years of wandering.nnIf you know a single mom who needs a reminder of her strength, share this with her. "The world is one big giant oyster, and there's so many different ways to make a dollar, and if you're motivated, it can be made out of just about anything." — Kira Hartley Klinger Kira Hartley Klinger was 40 years old, newly divorced, with a teenager at home, no college degree, and a patchwork of side hustles behind her: cleaning houses, writing resumes, running a paper route with her boys. What she did have was five years of experience selling on eBay, a willingness to buy what nobody else wanted, and an instinct for finding treasure in the boxes at the back of auction lots. She fell into vintage fabric entirely by accident — buying it cheap because it was there, then discovering customers in Japan and Australia who kept coming back for more. She taught herself to date a piece of fabric by its width and fiber content. She opened an Etsy shop. She started writing little essays on her listing pages about the characters she met at auctions, and customers began writing back: you need to write the book. So she did. Twice. And those books led to speaking at quilting guilds, podcast guesting, and a California TV producer who signed her because she believed in the story. At 55, Kira became debt-free for the first time in her adult life. Raymond Aaron talks with her about the wiggly path — the one you can only see clearly by looking backward — and what it means to follow what the world is quietly offering you. One of the most difficult things we face is how needy we really are, how blind we really are. All the world would love you to shut up and your internal world kind of wants that too. Pride, shame all stand in the way of your being honest with God and others you truly need. Fortunately God has been rescuing me on this for years and the idea of being needy out loud and what all the possibilities are here came from a YouTube Video by Dave Busby…Oh Taste and See 4 of 5 – Jesus, said it perhaps even more clearly and distinctly in the first and foundational Beatitude in Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven." To be poor is to be needy, and when you are really, really, really needy then you may finally will be needy out loud. Like your arm was just chopped off needy. The courage of the blind beggars in Luke 18:35-43. It stopped Jesus and…… and they were the only ones in the MULTITUDE that got a God touch that day. What have you been so needy about in your life that you got the promise of Matthew 5:3 – "The Kingdom Of Heaven" Being Needy out loud is how the Jesus Labor of Love operates …. Car Repair help for Single Moms, Widows and Families in Crisis -If no one asked for help, (needy out loud), we would cease to be around.
Episode OverviewIn observance of "Cheer Up the Lonely Day," this episode addresses an emotion that carries profound weight for single and solo mothers: loneliness. For the solo parent, the repetitive "work-home-sleep" cycle can often lead to a sense of isolation that feels inescapable—a "one-dimensional" existence where the emotional weight of providing and nurturing leaves little room for the self. Loneliness in this context is far from a joke; it is a heavy, multidimensional experience that requires both compassion and a strategic approach to navigate. This episode moves beyond surface-level platitudes to offer a light yet careful exploration of how to break the cycle of "doom and gloom," framing the host as a supportive guide for those navigating the complexities of raising a family on their own.The following insights provide a roadmap for moving from a state of emotional heaviness toward a life characterized by intentional connection and spiritual resilience.Key TakeawaysTo help you navigate this discussion, we have outlined the primary themes and actionable advice discussed in the episode.[01:00] The Importance of Situational Awareness Identifying whether loneliness occurs in solitude or within a crowd (such as at church or work) is the first step in understanding the root of the emotion.[01:45] The Relational Audit A practical look at your current circle—evaluating the frequency and quality of communication with friends and family to see if you have unintentionally distanced yourself.[02:30] Breaking the One-Dimensional Cycle How hobbies and companionship can provide necessary layers to a life that has become dominated solely by work and childcare.[03:45] Reframing the Silence Shifting the perspective on solitary moments from a burden of isolation to a potential "teaching moment" or a season of rest.[05:15] The Power of Reciprocal Comfort Understanding that reaching out is not just about seeking help, but about providing comfort to someone else who may be in the exact same position.[06:30] Scriptural Foundation: 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 A deep dive into the biblical cycle of comfort and how God uses our experiences to help others.[07:45] Featured Resource: Overcoming Abandonment An introduction to the specialized tools available for those whose loneliness stems from deeper emotional wounds. These takeaways serve as a vital roadmap for emotional regulation, allowing you to transition from passive feeling to active engagement through the 7-step framework detailed below. The 7-Step Framework for Mitigating LonelinessThis framework is designed to help single mothers analyze their current state and implement practical changes to their daily routines.Contextual AwarenessThe Step: Examine when you feel lonely—is it when you are physically alone, or when you are surrounded by people at church or work?So What? By identifying the specific environment that triggers these feelings, you can move from a vague sense of sadness to a targeted understanding of why you feel disconnected, allowing you to address the root cause rather than just the symptom.Relational AuditThe Step: Evaluate your current relationships with friends and family. Are you actively communicating, or have you become distant? So What? Recognizing a self-imposed distance allows you to take ownership of your social health. It helps you identify where simple communication could bridge the gap and break the cycle of isolation. The Role of CompanionshipThe Step: Consider if your lifestyle is conducive to a pet, such as a small dog or a cat.So What? The source emphasizes that a pet is a powerful solution when you "can't pinpoint" the source of your loneliness. This companionship provides a mutual benefit; the animal receives care, while you receive consistent, non-judgmental presence that enhances your home environment.Identity Beyond MotherhoodThe Step: Re-engage with a hobby, such as gardening, reading, writing, or painting. So What? Solo parenting often results in a "one-dimensional" life of work and childcare. Hobbies break this cycle, reminding you that you are an individual with unique interests and creative needs beyond your role as a provider.Intentional ConnectionThe Step: Deepen existing relationships through weekly phone calls, texts, coffee dates, or walks. So What? Deepening a connection benefits both parties. It moves relationships beyond the superficial, ensuring that your lifestyle is enhanced by a genuine support system that understands your reality.Reframing SolitudeThe Step: View quiet seasons as a "gift" or a "teaching moment" rather than a failure to connect. So What? By asking God why a season is quiet, you transform yourself from a victim of isolation into a student of your current season. This shift allows you to find purpose and growth in the silence rather than just enduring it.Physical and Creative ReleaseThe Step: Go outside, walk in nature, and use technology intentionally. So What? Physical movement in nature acts as a release for the tension and loneliness that gathers within. The host suggests taking your phone not as a distraction, but as a tool to "talk," record voice journals, or take photos—turning a potential instrument of isolation into a medium for creative self-expression.While these practical steps offer significant relief, some forms of loneliness stem from deeper spiritual and emotional wounds, such as abandonment, which require a more dedicated focus.Scriptural Foundation: The Cycle of ComfortCentral to overcoming loneliness is the spiritual principle of reciprocal comfort, as found in 2 Corinthians 1:3-5:"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."The "So What?": This scripture reveals that the comfort we receive from God is not meant to end with us. It establishes a divine cycle: God comforts us in our darkest moments so that we are empowered to reach out and comfort others. By looking outward and providing support to someone else, you often find that your own sense of "doom and gloom" begins to lift. You discover that in the very moment you felt you needed someone most, you were actually the answer to someone else's prayer.Featured Resource: [FREE AUDIO COPY]Deepen Your Healing Journey If you feel your loneliness is rooted in the "wounds of abandonment," I invite you to explore a specialized resource designed for you.Featured Offer: Day 3 of the Courage to Believe 21-Day Christian Devotional for Single Moms.Title: "Loneliness: Releasing the Stigma of Abandonment"Format: Free Audio Copy[DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE AUDIO COPY HERE] (Click the link to access your free gift.)This resource is specifically crafted to help you move past the stigma of abandonment and find the courage to believe in a future filled with connection, purpose, and spiritual peace.Memorable Quote and Final Encouragement"Go ahead and reach out. Don't be afraid. Don't be ashamed. There is likely someone in your circle praying for a friend just like you. It's not only about what you get from reaching out; it's what somebody else gets from you."Loneliness can feel like a permanent state, but it is often just a call to rediscover your value to others. https://linktr.ee/csjosephWhat's up, Ego Hackers? Welcome to the CS Joseph Podcast. In this episode, CS Joseph breaks down why Subconscious Developed Men (SDM) are often cowards and "do-nothing" men in their youth — outsourcing judgment to the collective, embracing groupthink, and creating dangerous echo chambers and mob mentality. Discover the healthiest Subconscious Developed Perceiving Male (SDPM / SDSF joy-oriented men) who excel at sensing danger, building status, and creating beauty as artists and architects. But when SD men dominate society, warriors (Unconscious Developed Men) pay the ultimate price, as seen in the Battle of Thermopylae with King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans.CS Joseph shares raw personal stories, including bar confrontations with hubris-filled SD men, backbiting, saving lives only to face groupthink attacks, family dynamics, and why UD men are statistically more masculine, invested in their children, and likely to survive hard times.Learn the dangers of common sense as "common ignorance," playing it safe, vibe checks over truth, and how SD men rely on preexisting ideas instead of original insight. Are we doomed if they're the majority?Drop a comment: Are you (or the men around you) Subconscious Developed or Unconscious Developed? What's your take on groupthink and masculinity?

Toward the end we pray together, and something opens up in her about why it's felt safer to keep love out than risk it leaving again.Michele is a member of our Receive Academy community who's spent the last eight months learning to recognize God's voice in her everyday life, from prayer to parenting to driving in traffic. Here's what we explore:▪️ How a belief that she was fundamentally broken kept her from expecting God would actually come through for her, and what shifted once that healed▪️ The morning she finally saw Jesus' eyes after eight months of sensing Him near without seeing them▪️ What happened when she started asking God how much to earn before her DoorDashing shifts▪️ Realizing she had pictured God acting like her mother instead of trusting Him as Father▪️ A live prayer where we get underneath a fist wrapped around her heart, holding pain because letting love in once meant watching it leaveChapters00:00 Intro01:05 Becoming a Single Mom at Nineteen and the Miracles That Followed04:05 Marrying Without Ever Praying About It06:56 Growing Up in a Split Faith Family and Hearing Her First Name From God08:54 A Year That Took Her Mom, Her Son's Faith, and Nearly Her Own11:19 Six Weeks of Hearing Not Yet Before Joining the Community13:16 Seeing His Eyes and Feeling Time Stretch16:23 Healing the Belief That She Was Broken20:36 Asking God How Much to Earn and Realizing She'd Pictured Him Like Her Mother27:24 A Live Prayer for the Fist Around Her HeartIf something in this stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. In just six years, this single mom of three became a self-made multimillionaire with rental properties. She didn't start with a ton of cash; she worked full-time, and she often put very little down. Using an owner-occupied strategy that 99% of investors won't dare to try, she's reached financial freedom while raising three kids. So how'd she do it? Today, we're talking to Rachel Duck from central Texas. She took a popular strategy—the live-in flip—and made it even better: buying houses with 5% down, living in them for a year, fixing them up, moving out, and repeating. She did it with three kids and spent her 5-9 after her 9-5 renovating homes so she could rent them and repeat. The result? Millions of dollars in equity that has made her financially free. Today, she's giving you the blueprint so you can do it too. Rachel shares the tips for your first live-in renovation rental, the expensive mistake she made that you can avoid, how to do it while raising kids and working 9-5, and the low-money-down loans she used to scale without putting up tons of cash. In This Episode We Cover One of the smartest strategies for growing your real estate portfolio fast The “uncomfortable” rentals that make you rich and give you a place to live Low-money-down loans you can use to buy your first property for 5% down Rachel's exact buy box for rental properties and live-in flip-style rentals Tips before you buy a property that you'll live in and renovate And So Much More! This week, the Good Moms are calling BS on the internet’s obsession with shaming single moms. Erica and Milah tap in about Dr. Sarah and all the “high value” think pieces that act like a woman’s worth is measured by how many kids she has and whether somebody’s calling her “wife.” They break down why that mindset is dangerous for Black single moms especially, how it keeps women stuck in trash relationships, and why your value has nothing to do with your relationship status. In this episode, you’ll hear: Why single moms are not the problem, no matter what the algorithm says The difference between holding your friends accountable and publicly clowning women for clicks How fear of being a “single mom” keeps people in relationships they should’ve left five years ago Real talk on baby daddies, boundaries, and loving yourself more than you love the potential Bad Choice of the Week: macro shrooms in the desert, calling for backup on kid pickup, and making a new plug friend Whorie Time: a sunrise threesome, one condom left, and two very enthusiastic cannabis kings Why “Don’t Be a Dumb Bitch” is less an insult and more a love note and lifestyle Tune in for a raw, hilarious episode about calling out single‑mom shame, making “bad” choices that still lead to growth, and redefining your worth in love, sex, and motherhood. --------------------------------------------- Watch this episode and more on YouTube.
