Super-special-secret friend Matt Heller (a.k.a. DJ Snakes) joins Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon for an in-depth discussion about what he's been listening to. In true DJ form, Snakes brings four rare/abstract vinyl singles to Electric Kitsch for a conversation about the DIY punk scene of his adolescence, the intersection of skateboarding and hip-hop, dusty independent soul holy grail 45s, proto-drumless rap from Wu's G.O.A.T. (arguably), and an unlikely emcee whose appeal is seemingly without boundaries. As always, an eclectic custom mixtape is curated and included on the back end. Lickers gonna lick. Join the fun! Sonic (non-mix) contributors to the twenty-second bonus episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast include: Townes Van Zandt, Ahmed, Teddy Pendergrass, Thomas Dolby, Prince Paul and De La Soul, Gary Wright, Biggie Smalls, Mtume, Mike Judge's Hank and Bobby Hill, Migos, Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, James Todd Smith, Osonski, Oddisee, Thundercat, Greta Van Fleet, Whitney, Smith Westerns, Fleetwood Mac, Haim, The Rockets, Jimi Hendrix, Tropical Fuck Storm, Bee Gees, Nine Inch Nails, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, LCD Soundsystem, Robert Gordon, Hozier, Mekons, James Brown, Clyde Stubblefield, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Green River, J.J. This week we are doing a special listener suggestion episode, from Kyle Brown, who releases music under the name "Kite Vendor"."DIIV" are a four piece indie rock band based out of Brooklyn, New York. The project originally started after lead songwriter and frontman Zachary Cole Smith left the band "Beach Fossils", for whom he was playing drums for. Cole started by writing and demoing material in his bedroom, not knowing if anything would come of what he was creating, or if anyone would ever hear it. However as his confidence grew he decided to share his new material with the label managers at Captured Tracks, the label Beach Fossils were signed with. The label liked what they heard and decided to put out a couple singles. Off the success of these singles Captured Tracks decided to put out Cole's full-length debut album "Oshin" in 2012.To hear the full story, and a selection of tracks, check out this weeks episode of R2G.To learn the full story, check out this week's episode of Roots to Grooves!"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

In this edition of In Sight Out, a series of podcasts from Pitchfork that explore new perspectives on arts and culture, music writer Leor Galil speaks with Whitney. After Chicago glam-rock outfit Smith Westerns broke up at the end of 2014, guitarist Max Kakacek and drummer Julien Ehrlich broke off to experiment with a different musical approach. They synthesized sweet Chicago soul melodies, plaintive country songwriting, and gentle ’70s folk: Ehrlich took on lead vocals behind the kit, and his comforting falsetto coo solidified the sound they began to make under the name Whitney. Their 2016 debut, Light Upon the Lake, made them indie-rock darlings, and catapulted them to unassuming stars in their hometown. Before Whitney performed at the 2019 Pitchfork Music Festival, Kakacek and Ehrlich sat down with Leor Galil at the Chicago Athletic Association to talk about their band’s history and their forthcoming second album, Forever Turned Around.
SCOTT YODER "Where Are They Now" A Fool Aloof Burger Records (2018) TAPE OUT NOW: http://burgerrecords.11spot.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=yoder Seasoned musician Scott Yoder has travelled a persistent & diverse path since he first began performing as a young teenager. From starting out with the noisy garage pop of his former band The Pharmacy to playing as a backing musician for Kimya Dawson he has always reinvented himself. All the while opening for bands such as Fleet Foxes, Smith Westerns, Black Lips & Kevin Morby. As a solo musician he further evolved his sound into fronting an electrified & theatrical band of glammy freaks across the US & Europe. After a series of cassettes he released his first solo LP “Looking Back In Blue” to critical acclaim in May 2016. “Lyrically impressive songs & melodies drive this album” (Surviving the Golden Age) “No matter what the sound the songwriting remains the strongest part of Scott’s work” (Clunk Magazine). His new 7” “Ways Of Love” (Greenway Records) comes out in September as he embarks on a US tour. Drawing inspiration from T. Rex, The Damned & Kate Bush the new single evokes a moody & danceable darkness that compels you to follow him deeper. Look for him & his band (featuring Shawn Randles from Boyfriends, Bryant Moore from The True Loves & Brent Zmrhal from Slushy) this fall as he tours the USA.
When I met Chicago indie band Whitney (Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich) at Vancouver's Biltmore, they were in the middle of practicing a cool, weird, new handshake. Max and Julien met in their previous glam-rock band the Smith Westerns and quickly became close friends. When the Smith Westerns imploded, they started to work together on what would eventually become Whitney. The result ended up being the amazing debut record, Light Upon the Lake. How did Max and Julien get over the Smith Westerns imploding? Which song was influenced by an acid trip? Which song was inspired by a drug dealing neighbor? What was it like when Max and Julien showed their ex-girlfriends the song they wrote about the breakup? Which album track do we compare to the demo version? What was the "secret" handshake all about? You'll have to listen to find out. Tracks played on the radio edit of the show… 1) Whitney, Light Upon the Lake (June 2016) “No Woman” 2) Smith Westerns, Smith Westerns (June 2009) "The Glam Goddess" (background) 3) Whitney, Light Upon the Lake (June 2016) “Dave's Song” 4) Whitney, Light Upon the Lake (June 2016) “No Matter Where We Go” 5) Whitney “No Woman” (unreleased demo) (background) 6) Whitney, Light Upon the Lake (June 2016) “Polly” (background/partial) 7) Whitney, Light Upon the Lake (June 2016) “Golden Days” 8) Whitney, Light Upon the Lake (June 2016) “Polly” NO songs CANCON

[12/2/2019 note: When I uploaded this episode eight years ago, it contained an audio error that cut off the last several seconds. It has bugged me ever since. So, I went back a couple weeks ago and completely remixed, remastered, and recreated the episode from scratch. I got married a month ago, and these songs were the soundtrack of my wife and I's first year together. They will remind me of that time forever, and I am glad the episode is finally complete.]2011 is almost over, and oh my goodness where did the time go?! The past twelve months were filled with all kinds of good things for me on the life front, and much like last year, there were SO MANY crucial rock n' roll records released and a bunch of killer shows that damaged my eardrums even further. EPISODE #38 of Random Old Records cuts away all of the extra padding and somewhat clever soundbytes and presents an hour of my personal favorite songs of 2011 with no interruptions! You'll hear all the songs I've been raving about since January, including heavy hitters like "Gold Sneakers" by Wax Idols, "Weekend" by Smith Westerns, and "Into Black" by Blouse. You'll hear heavy-duty psychedelic blowouts from The Paperhead, Thee Oh Sees, and The People's Temple, and perfect pop from Dum Dum Girls, Colleen Green, and The Babies. Have a great 2012, and thanks for listening!!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Come back next month (or so) for another episode of Random Old Records. So yeah, the air conditioning has been broken in my office at work all week long. Neat, huh? It's like eleventy billion degrees outside, so it's a perfect time to drop a brand new podcast of hot rock n' roll jams to sweat out the summer months with! Random Old Records EPISODE #32 features brand new tracks from Black Lips, Wax Museums, Ty Segall, and Cults, each from LPs that are sure to top the year-end lists. Ty Segall in particular has a stunner ready for all of you with Goodbye Bread, which thickens and slows down his bratty garage punk sound and brings the superficial Beatles and Nirvana influences of his past releases to the forefront in a way that will have mainstream rock critics blowing their stacks when they finally get around to checking it out.To be honest, I wasn't much of a Black Lips fan before, but the steady hand of super-producer Mark Ronson guides the band and polishes the shit out of their hooks and sound on the new Arabia Mountain. The blasts of bratty feedback and in-jokey murkiness of their previous releases has been replaced with huge gang choruses, sleazy saxophones, and more refined melodies than ever before. Random Old Records #32 includes "Raw Meat," which is a short and sweet Ramones homage that might be the best song they've ever recorded. Check it out! Also, you may notice some strange and different sounds on Random Old Records #32 that you haven't heard in previous episodes. For some reason, this new wave of dark and moody electronic rock has really been catching my ear in the past month or two, most notably the releases from Brooklyn's Captured Tracks label. On this episode, you'll hear a KILLER track from Portland's Blouse called "Into Black." These folks sound like they're trying to create a late 80s David Lynch movie credits theme with every track, and that's not really a bad thing in my book. You'll also hear darker Suicide-style tunes from The Soft Moon and Led Er Est that are on steady rotation around Random Old Records HQ.You'll also hear new hot blasts of rock n' roll from Wax Idols, The Hussy, Personal And The Pizzas, Brian Olive, Ramma Lamma, The People's Temple, Natural Child, Smith Westerns, Thee Oh Sees, and loads more! Click the links below to stream, subscribe, or download the latest episode and let me know that you think. As always, thanks for reading and listening, and if you're in the Cincinnati area, come out to see The Hussy from Madison, Wisconsin at the Comet tonight! Smith Westerns' members are no strangers to NPR Music's coverage of the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas: Just last year, they were a bunch of skinny, no-name teenagers winning over the crowd at NPR Music's annual daytime party. That enjoyable and ingratiating set — all propulsive rock energy, timeless pop hooks and some of the shiniest hair in music — laid the groundwork nicely for last fall's well-received Dye It Blonde, an engaging blast of candy-coated swagger. Hear the band perform live at SXSW from Stubb's in Austin, Texas, on March 16, 2011.

2011 is in full swing, and there's a ton of amazing new jams coming out, so what better time to drop another installment of Random Old Records?! EPISODE #28 is a tribute to the ultimate diva Tura Satana (RIP) and it features a whole bunch of her classic quotes from the classic Russ Meyer flick Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill! As far as the musical portion goes, it starts off with some classic '90s tunes from Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, then moves into a mix of new and old rock n' roll from Spencey Dude And The Doodles, 20/20, Mind Spiders, Mr. Airplane Man, and Bare Wires, then finishes up with brand spankin' new tracks from Smith Westerns, Jail Weddings, and the Strange Boys!Big surprise that the most intriguing track to drop in 2011 so far comes from Austin's Strange Boys, off a FREE Scion Garage A/V single. My favorite band of 2010 goes OUT THERE with a seriously arty song that mixes yacht rock, silly white reggae, barking preacher voices, and their patented Stonesy swagger into a four minute firebomb interrupted by jolts of AM radio static. It sounds like a band of tired rock n' rollers driving their van down a faceless highway at 4 AM, sick of all the previously packed CDs, tapes, and iPods, desperately trying to find something good to listen to on the radio. Incredible!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Twenty years later, Jim and Greg look back at 1991, the year that gave us Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses and Lollapalooza.
This week: Swedish starlet Noomi Rapace removes her Dragon Tattoo… America’s fake World War… And Quidditch vies for legit-ish-macy. Plus a joke from Talking Head Chris Frantz, and music from The Smith Westerns.
Every night — or really, early morning — during South By Southwest, Bob Boilen, Carrie Brownstein, Robin Hilton and Stephen Thompson will meet up on some random street corner in Austin, Texas and break down the events of the day. And every morning during the festival we'll post these lively and increasingly loopy recaps here and on the blog. In this second installment, the gang met up around 2:30 a.m. to rave about NPR Music's SXSW daytime party at The Parish, which included Brooklyn Rider, Smith Westerns, Local Natives, G-Side, Surfer Blood, and Sleigh Bells. They also talk about some of the shows they were able to catch later that night in venues all across Austin.
The songs of the young Chicago band are, unmistakably, the guttural outpourings of raucous adolescents. But the group's members have talent well beyond their years, as well as an undeniable gift for writing rousing, sneakily infectious rock. The band performs as part of NPR Music's South By Southwest daytime party at The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 18, 2010.
