Steve Wojciechowski,In this episode, you'll hear from Coach Steve Wojciechowski. Or, as everyone knows him as simply Coach Wojo. I am so thankful that Coach Wojo was able to take some time out of his schedule to have this conversation. Coach Wojo is a 1994 Graduate of the Cardinal Gibbons School in Baltimore, Maryland. And, wait to hear Coach Wojo talk in detail about how his recruitment changed forever during a visit to Ypsilanti, Michigan. Steve was a 1994 McDonald's All-American who chose Duke as his college destination. Playing for Coach K, Coach Wojo was named the NABC defensive player of the Year in his senior year. Wojo was the team captain of the 1997-1998 Blue Devils team. A team that went 32-4 and finished #1 in the AP regular season rankings. This Duke team reached the South Regional final, losing to the eventual champion, Kentucky, 86–84 in an incredible NCAA Tournament game. After his playing career concluded, Wojo returned to Duke to assist Coach K. Over a 14-year span with Coach K and his Duke Program, Coach Wojo was part of two National Championship wins in 2001 and 2010. Wojo was part of 441 wins at Duke during his coaching career. Police and other unions are blasting the mayor for seemingly treating the wealthy and famous differently. The fire broke out on the fourth level at Empower Field at Mile High on Thursday afternoon and spread to the third level, where it burned at least six rows of seats in two sections. Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer this week signed the legislation. It comes more than four years after the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University sports doctor was sentenced to a virtual life sentence for his conviction on child pornography charges and sexually abusing athletes. As we get ready for the return of the NCAA Tournament after a one-year hiatus, we picked a game from the first round that featured two teams that are very relevant to this tournament: defending champion Virginia and the current favorite Gonzaga. The 2001 South Regional matchup between the 5-seed Cavaliers and the 12-seed Bulldogs might seem like just another first round matchup on paper, but it went a long way towards turning the Zags from Cinderella to tournament mainstay. In Mark Few’s second season as head coach in Spokane, there were questions about whether he'd be able to continue the program's recent rise. This team advanced to the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 the previous two seasons.   In their way was a battle-tested Virginia squad led by coach Pete Gillen and a backcourt led by Roger Mason and Donald Hand.    Join us as we go back to this 5-12 matchup from 20 years ago. In their episode, we discuss: Where Gonzaga is in terms of their program progression Gonzaga household names over the years The 2001 tournament The Pyramid in Memphis was an awesome setting Mike’s 2001 Final Four experience Chris Williams from Birmingham The Big Apple on CBS? shammock@gsboe.org Coach Hammock is entering his fifth softball season with Gulf Shores High School, third as the Head Softball Coach, and sixth year at Gulf Shores High School. Before becoming the Head Coach, Coach Hammock spent two seasons as the Head Junior Varsity Softball Coach and Lead Varsity Assistant working with outfielders, infielders, and catchers in addition to providing hitting and base running instruction. Though the 2020 season was shortened due to Covid-19, the Lady Dolphins were on pace to exceed offensive totals from the 2019 season, including homeruns, runs batted in, runs scored, and extra base hits. The Lady Dolphins were playing their best ball at the point of interruption due to the pandemic, winning 6 of their last 9 games. The 2019 season saw the Lady Dolphins make a return to the South Regional of the AHSAA playoffs, after a two-year absence, and come two games short of advancing to the State Tournament. Prior to coming to Gulf Shores, Coach Hammock worked for three years at Upson-Lee High School serving as the Head Varsity Softball Coach, and Varsity Assistant Baseball Coach. Under his leadership, the Lady Knights won 12 games in 2014, the most wins in a season in 10 years. Prior to Hammock’s arrival, the Varsity baseball team won two games in 2012 and three games in 2011. Serving as the primary outfield instructor in 2013, the Knights baseball team won 10 games, 8 more than the previous year, and won 14 games in 2014 with Hammock serving as the lead infield instructor. The Knights’ success continued in 2015 with 17 wins and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen of the state playoffs. While at Upson-Lee, Coach Hammock instructed five college signees (Chelsea Wainwright- Gordon State College, Montana Schug- Denison College, Kyle Kelly- Point University, Austin Matson- Valdosta State, Kalen Puckett- Georgia State). Prior to Upson-Lee, Coach Hammock served as an Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach and primary defensive instructor for the 2011 season, at Mundy’s Mill High School. The Tigers posted a 22-9 season record and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the State Playoffs, losing to the defending two-time state champion, Marist High School. At Mundy’s Mill, Coach Hammock coached four college signees (Corey Harmon- Gordon State College, Jerek Wright- Paine College, Raheem Jackson- Savannah State, Rodney Smith- University of Minnesota) and one draft pick (Rashad Crawford- 11th Round Selection- Chicago Cubs). In addition to his softball duties, Coach Hammock is a special education teacher, and also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director at the school. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

Earlier this year, Megan Benzik was selected for a drug test at the South Regional. Weeks later - if not months - CrossFit HQ released a statement that she had tested positive for several banned substances. I immediately started getting texts since I had coached Megan for 2016 and 2017 season (so I can't imagine how many messages she was getting). Megan made an Instagram post explaining that she was taking both Vyvanse (a prescription ADD medication) as well as Anavar (a steroid) - and that the Anavar was likely contaminated with the other banned substances that she tested positive for. Since Megan and I have kept in touch since she moved to Arizona last year, I figured it would be a good conversation to have her on the podcast to discuss the situation. I also feel the need to offer some sort of disclaimer, since I've found that the capacity of humans to misunderstand and take information out of context to be boundless: I certainly don't support the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport - and neither does Megan. While we do spend some time talking about reasons and justifications for drug usage, this is not meant to be an attempt to make excuses. Rather, we are trying to dig into the compartmentalization and other psychological gymnastics that an athlete can get into as they go further down the path of performance-enhancing drug usage. Welcome to Episode 21 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is the fifth of our eight postseason regional preview podcasts -- this one focuses on the 6-team South Regional which will take place in Holly Springs, NC. We break down each of the six teams. In order: #1 Randolph-Macon (at 1:19) The Yellow Jackets roll into the regional coming off a disappointing ODAC tourney showing; can the Macon Machine get hot again quickly? #6 LaGrange (at 4:58)  The USA South champs will look to their pitching staff to keep them competitive in this loaded regional #2 TCNJ (at 7:57) The Lions boast one of the best rotations in all of D-III baseball; can they score enough runs to make a run at Appleton? #5 Alvernia (at 10:54) An impressive resume earned the Golden Wolves an at-large bid; how will they perform after a cold stretch to end their regular season? #3 Denison (at 13:18) The first regional appearance in Big Red history will be a tough one, but they've certainly got the talent to compete #4 Christopher Newport (at 16:05) One of the most underseeded teams in the tournament can knock dingers with the best of 'em, and strike out more batters than you can believe. Don't mess with the Captains.  We conclude with our top players and pitchers to watch, and our pick to punch their ticket to Appleton (at 19:35). Then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening!
