Interview with MiLB statistician, Jason Wirtz.
How do we decide who gets financial support from the government? Usually, it comes down to the federal poverty line. You might think a lot of data and research goes into establishing that number. But in reality, it’s much squishier. So squishy in fact that it involves Jello... Today, a special episode brought to us by our friends at Control F: the surprising history of the federal poverty line. Data is the lifeblood of the modern economy - powering decision-making, daily life, and the AI revolution. But governing data is full of trade-offs: openness and trust vs privacy and regulation; cross-border sharing vs sovereignty; and timeliness vs quality. In this episode of Behind the Numbers, host Ashley Ward is joined by OECD Chief Statistician Steve MacFeely to explore why data governance has become a core policy challenge - and what it means for the future of official statistics and AI. We follow Steve's journey from Cork to Geneva to Paris; unpack his thoughts on metadata; and find out where he thinks the international statistical community should double down – or back off – over the coming decade. Generative AI is moving fast—and in pharma, it's no longer just a buzzword. In this episode of The Effective Statistician Podcast, I speak with Manuel Cossio about how Generative AI is already being applied in real-world pharma settings, where it's delivering value today, and what still needs careful consideration in regulated environments. Manuel brings a unique hybrid background, combining molecular biology, genetics, pharma experience, and deep AI engineering expertise. He works at the cutting edge of AI in clinical development, including agentic systems, human-in-the-loop approaches, and large-scale document automation. This conversation goes well beyond theory. We focus on practical use cases, real limitations, and how statisticians, programmers, and data scientists can responsibly use GenAI to become more effective.
MCNAMARA'S ROLE IN THE FIREBOMBING OF TOKYO Colleague William Taubman. William Taubmandiscusses Robert McNamara's service in the Pacific during World War II, specifically his role as a statistician under General Curtis LeMay in the Marianas. McNamara's analysis revealed that B-29 bombers were missing targets because they flew too high, advising LeMay to order low-altitude firebombing raids on Tokyo, a tactic that devastated the city. Although LeMay made the final decision and flew the lead plane, McNamara later admitted that had the United States lost the war, they would likely have been prosecuted as war criminals for the high civilian death toll. In this episode, I talk with my long-time friend and frequent guest, Kaspar Rufibach, about a skill that quietly determines how much impact we really have: presenting and communicating our work. We walk through how Kaspar prepares his talks (including why he starts months in advance), how he structures messages so stakeholders actually remember and act on them, and why overcrowded slides are often just a sign that we haven't done the hard thinking yet. We also get honest about something many statisticians feel but rarely discuss: the fear of public speaking, the frustration of bad meetings, and the “personal brand” you build every time you present—whether you intend to or not. If you've ever walked out of a meeting thinking “I don't think they really understood what I meant,” this episode is for you.
We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with the late Todd Snider. ABOUT TODD SNIDERCelebrated singer-songwriter Todd Snider has continued the troubadour legacy of mentors like John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, while putting his uniquely clever, wry, sly, and often irreverent spin on folk, rock, country, and Americana. Launching his career on Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Records, Snider has spent more than two decades touring relentlessly, both on his own and with legendary artists such as Emmylou Harris. Along the way he's made a splash with fan favorite songs such as “Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues,” “Alright Guy,” “Can't Complain,” “Beer Run,” “Statistician's Blues,” and “Play a Train Song.” He has released well over a dozen albums, including The Devil You Know and Agnostic Hymns and Stoner Fables, both of which were named to Rolling Stone's list of the Top 50 Albums of the Year. He also formed the group Hardworking Americans, and published a memoir called I Never Met a Story I Didn't Like: Mostly True Tall Tales. His songs have been covered by Garth Brooks, Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Tom Jones, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver, Elizabeth Cook, Warren Haynes, Loretta Lynn, and Elvis Costello. When we first spoke to him he'd recently released his experimental funk-influenced album called First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder. Snider died from complications with pneumonia on November 14, 2025. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Robert McNamara: From WWII Statistical Control to Kennedy's Star. Professor William Taubman detailed Robert McNamara's rise, beginning as a statistician in WWII advising General Curtis LeMay on firebombing techniques, a success McNamara later regretted as potentially criminal. After becoming president of Ford, he reluctantly joined JFK's administration as Secretary of Defense. McNamara's brilliance and efficiency led Kennedy to admire him as the cabinet's star, even considering him for vice president in 1964 and the presidential candidate in 1968. 1944

This episode is a little different because Alun turns the microphone toward me. After 456 episodes, it feels both strange and exciting to be the “guest” on my own show. Together, we reflect on the journey so far and then dive into a topic close to both our hearts: the human skills that make statisticians and quantitative scientists truly effective. We talk about leadership as helping others accomplish something, how to influence people across functions (not just departments), why being known inside your organization matters, and how presentation skills can make or break your impact. We wrap up with three actions you can start applying right away.
The international prize in statistics is awarded every two years by a collaboration among five leading international statistics organizations: the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the International Biometric Society, the International Statistical Institute, and the Royal Statistical Society. The prize recognizes a major achievement by an individual or team in the statistics field, particularly an achievement of powerful and original ideas that have led to practical applications and breakthroughs in other disciplines. The International Prize in Statistics for 2025 was announced recently, and the winner is Grace Wahba. This episode of Stats+Stories is all about celebrating her career with her former students, Finbarr O'Sullivan and Douglas Nychka. Finbarr O'Sullivan is a Senior Post-Doctoral researcher and Associate Director in the National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology at Dublin City University. He has research interests in corneal biology and in limbal stem cell culture techniques for corneal epithelial replacement. In conjunction with collaborators in The Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Dublin and the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) he has developed the technique of using such cultures to treat corneal-limbal epithelial stem deficiency. This technique received regulatory approval in January 2016 and was used on June 2016 in the clinic for the first time. Douglas Nychka is a statistician who works in applications for the environment. Douglas Nychka is a statistician and data scientist whose areas of research include the theory, computation and application of curve and surface fitting with a focus on geophysical and environmental applications. Currently he is a Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the Colorado School of Mines and Senior Scientist Emeritus at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado. Before moving to Mines he directed the Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geosciences at NCAR. His current focus in research is the computation of spatial statistics methods for large data sets and the migration of these algorithms into easy to use R packages. He has coauthored more than 100 research articles and with an h-index of 50. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Fellow of the Institute for Mathematical Statistics and a recipient of the Jerry Sacks Award for interdisciplinary research.
This is one of our most downloaded episodes ever, and I'm excited to bring it back in this replay. In this conversation, I spoke with Lara Wolfson (MSD) and Anders Gorst-Rasmussen (Novo Nordisk) about EU HTA (European Union Health Technology Assessment): what it is, why it's coming, and why statisticians like us must pay attention. If you've ever wondered whether your approach to safety analysis is leading to misleading conclusions, this episode is a must-listen.
Eva Leahy, Statistician in the life events and demography division with the CSO, assesses the population statistics published by the Central Statistics Office today.
In this special replay episode — the top 3 most downloaded of all time — I'm again joined by Stuart McGuire as we explore The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters. This book provides a simple yet powerful model for understanding how our brain works — and how it often works against us if we're not aware of it. Whether in meetings, under pressure, or dealing with self-doubt, understanding your inner “chimp” can help you manage emotions, lead with clarity, and avoid the traps that keep so many statisticians and scientists stuck. This episode remains a favorite because it strikes at the core of how we think, react, and lead — especially in high-stakes scientific and business environments.
This episode ranks as the #2 most downloaded of all time—and for good reason. As data science continues to disrupt and redefine the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, statisticians everywhere are asking: Where do I fit in? In this insightful conversation, two leaders from Cytel—Yannis Jemiai, Head of Consulting and Software, and Rajat Mukherjee, Head of Data Science—share their personal journeys from traditional statistics into data science, how the field is evolving, and why statisticians are uniquely positioned to lead the future of analytics in life sciences. Whether you're curious, skeptical, or already exploring data science, this episode will inspire and equip you with practical insights.
Content Warning: Themes of racism, violence, and police brutality are discussed throughout this episode. Please proceed with caution and care. The U.S. has persistently relied on armed law enforcement to enforce traffic laws. However, existing evidence does not support the notion that police traffic enforcement improves public safety. In fact, police traffic enforcement has serious adverse consequences for community health and well-being, with disproportionate impacts on Black communities. Last year, the Thurgood Marshall Institute published a research brief, Safe Roads for All, which found that police traffic enforcement is not associated with safer roads. This episode of Justice Above All builds upon what is discussed in that brief and presents a community-centered public health approach to traffic safety. Our guests come from the transit safety and police reform worlds. Together, they agree that we can reimagine traffic safety in a way that prioritizes public health and eliminates our heavy reliance on policing. Today's host is Dr. Sandhya Kajeepeta, Senior Researcher and Statistician at the Thurgood Marshall Institute. There are concerns scrapping the traditional census won't deliver the desired results. Stats NZ is moving to a system using Government collected admin-data, saying the current five yearly Census is financially unsustainable. Census-style questions will still be asked in much smaller annual surveys looking at a small fraction of the population. Former national statistician Len Cook told Mike Hosking data-wise, this won't cut it. He says admin-data comes from about a dozen different sources, none of them complete. In this special episode, I'm sharing the recording of a webinar I co-hosted with Cytel on March 20, 2025. I was joined by an expert panel of leaders in statistics and clinical development: Yannis Jemiai, Flaminia Chiesa, and Benjamin Piske. Together, we explored how the role of statisticians is rapidly evolving in response to industry changes, data innovations, and AI-driven transformation. This rich discussion dives into what it means to lead as a Clinical Data Scientist today—and why statisticians are uniquely positioned to influence strategy, innovation, and decision-making across the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

As someone who found my way into statistics late—only halfway through university—I often wonder: what if more young people knew about this path earlier? In this episode, I sit down with two wonderful guests and PSI volunteers, Emma Crawford and Alex Spiers, to explore exactly that: how we, as statisticians and scientists, can inspire the next generation. We talk about the why behind investing in STEM outreach, share personal stories, and get into the practical steps you can take—whether you want to volunteer at a school, present virtually, or simply start a conversation with a student.
John McGready discusses how to prepare future statisticians to succeed in the era of AI.
In this episode, I'm sharing three personal stories where soft skills—or better yet, human skills—made a huge difference in my work as a statistician. Whether it was building trust to access critical data, presenting results in a way that truly resonated, or negotiating a fair contract, these experiences reminded me how essential these skills are alongside our technical expertise.
Clement Manyathela speaks with Risenga Maluleke, the Statistician-General of South Africa and Head of Statistics South Africa, about the ongoing crisis of crime in the country. Maluleke clarifies that crime in South Africa can be divided into two categories: reported crime, which is recorded in SAPS (South African Police Service) administrative records, and unreported crime – those incidents that are experienced but never reported to the police. He highlights some of the most frequently reported crimes in South Africa, including: Murders Sexual offences, with around 84% of these incidents reported Housebreaking (when the victim is not home) and home robberies "Housebreaking remains the highest crime in South Africa," Maluleke says. He further explains that a key indicator of a community's safety is whether people feel comfortable walking freely at night, confident in their security. Unfortunately, he notes, this is not the reality in South Africa, particularly for women. Maluleke also points out that many South Africans tend to trust the police more than the judicial system. He explains that, in the court of law, the process begins with the defendant pleading, followed by the trial. In contrast, in a traditional setting, the individual is first tried, and only then is the plea made. Thank you for listening to The Clement Manyathela podcast. President Trump recently cited from the oval office statistics about the state of the U.S. education system. What he didn't say is that we know about student achievement levels thanks to data gathered by the Education Department itself. One of the government's most vital activities is the gathering of reliable statistics to guide policy. My next guest says the quality of national statistics has become a concern. Comedian Gary Vider joins the show to discuss his podcast “#1 Dad” and his con-man father who inspired it. They also talk about how he got his start in stand-up and the comedians who helped him along in his early days. Next, Leah Knauer returns to read the news including stories about JLo filing for divorce from Ben Affleck, a colonoscopy doctor allegedly not hearing a patient screaming because he didn't have his hearing aid in, a new non-dating app that connects groups of people just for meals, and a survey that found Fresno to have the most chivalrous men in California. Finally, statistician and professional poker player Nate Silver makes his first ACS appearance to talk about his new book “On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything.” They also talk about his site FiveThreeEight getting bought by Disney and the benefits of leaving the mainstream media in favor of Substack. Then they discuss what Nate's model predicts for the upcoming presidential election and his relationship with Sam Bankman-Fried.
