Today I'm talking to Heidi Schauster, MS, RD, LDN, CEDS-S, SEP who is a nutrition therapist and Somatic Experiencing (SE)™ Practitioner who has specialised in eating and body image concerns for nearly 30 years. She provides individual and group counselling and clinical supervision/consultation and is particularly interested in the intersection between food and body concerns with trauma. Heidi considers herself a whole-self-wellness practitioner and Embodiment Warrior. She is the author of the award-winning book Nourish: How to Heal Your Relationship with Food, Body, and Self and writes the Nourishing Words newsletter on Substack. Her most recent book is Nurture - Nurture: How to Raise Kids Who Love Food, Their Bodies, and Themselves. Heidi lives in Arlington, Massachusetts, with her partner and twin daughters when they aren't in college. She recently choreographed a modern dance piece about the “empty nest,” performed by an ensemble of women age 40+. Heidi and her family enjoy most food that is lovingly prepared, especially if it's followed by a dishwashing dance party. In the episode today, Heidi talks about how parents can support their young children and teens in navigating a healthy relationship with food and body. She talks about responding to your individual child, and the delicate balance of providing structure with eating versus over-control. Heidi explains why it's unhelpful to have good and bad foods and how to navigate food neutrality within your family. Heidi talks about educating children around body diversity and calling out fat shaming and weight stigma. She explains about how we will be imperfect as parents and get it wrong, when navigating all of this. Heidi helpfully normalises how many parents are dealing with their own food issues and how they can still helpfully support their children. She deeply advocates for food as pleasure and nourishment – for connection and joy, in addition to nutrition. So much packed into the episode. I hope that you enjoy it. This one is for the ladies out there….myself included. Over the past few years, I have been on a health journey. In 2015, I found strength training and really loved how my brain and body responded to weight lifting (more on that in this episode from the Re-Find miniseries of the podcast). Then, in 2018, I dove into nutrition and started paying attention to macro rations, portion sizes, and caloric deficits with the help of my friend Coach Erika at Sweat Inspire Sisterhood (hear from her in one of the very first episodes of the podcast). But in the years since, with the Covid of it all, different seasons of business, and stressful life circumstances, I've found myself at my heaviest weight ever and carrying a LOT of it in my midsection. I've been pretty vulnerable sharing about this journey on my Instagram Stories, and thankfully through the magic of social media I was able to connect with Bri Edwards, owner and integrative nutrition health coach at Healthy Foundations Dubuque. Through her proven Mind Body Nutrition Method, Bri guides women to their healthiest and most vibrant selves. Because she believes you don't have to continue looking for the next right diet. You don't have to continue looking for the next right fitness plan. You don't need to push harder. You don't need to have greater self control. You just need to unlearn and relearn the truths about your body as a woman, nutrition and how you can utilize both to transform your life. In this episode with Bri, you'll learn simple steps to set you up for success each day, ways to manage your stress levels through the foods you're eating, and how to listen to your body in order to understand what you need most. Jessica Mannen Kimmet was searching for spiritual resources in the Church that would guide her and strengthen her during her early years of motherhood. She was experiencing significant struggles and was confronting unmet expectations. But other than a few scattered blog posts here and there, she really couldn't find anything that would respond to her need and desire. So several years later, she wrote the book she was looking for, a book where the Word of God is brought close to the experiences of new mothers, and to many more of us besides. In her concluding chapter, she writes, “finding my way into motherhood has been a long, convoluted road. Progress through my pain was never as linear as I would have chosen. There were better days and worse days, improvements and relapses. There were moments of hope and energy, followed all too quickly by moments of anguish and despair. … [But] God makes all things new. Even me. Even you. God has the power to end all death and mourning and pain, and God promises to do so. In the meantime, God acknowledges our suffering and sits with us in it.”Jessica's book is for those times in between, when there is suffering and struggle, and therefore the real need for hope and companionship. The book is called Groaning in Labor, Growing in Hope: Scripture Reflections for the Hard Days of Early Motherhood. As an early reader of this book myself, I can assure you that many other people besides those in early motherhood will benefit from this book, including men, whether single, married, fathers, or even priests.Follow up Resources:● Groaning in Labor, Growing in Hope: Scripture Reflections for the Hard Days of Early Motherhood by Jessica Mannen Kimmet● “Some Human Beings Carry Remnants of Other Human Beings in Their Bodies,” essay in Church Life Journal by Dr. Kristin Collier● “The Theobiology of a Mother's Voice,” essay in Church Life Journal by Dr. Kristin Collier● “Forming Catholic Leaders for Mental Health, with Beth Hlabse,” podcast episode on Church Life Today Church Life Today is a partnership between the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and OSV Podcasts from Our Sunday Visitor. SUMMARY Body language is a clear indicator of our mental state. Experts have noted how we can read people's minds just by looking at their bodies. This is known as body language reading. You can't be too obvious when doing this, or the person will label you as a creep. There are subtle signs that people give out all the time, and it only takes a split second to notice them. For example, you could just look at the way somebody moves their eyes when they're listening or the way they hold their lips when they're talking. The speaker explains that body language is a powerful tool that can be used to understand what someone is thinking. By paying attention to the way someone stands, the way they use their hands, and other nonverbal cues, it is possible to get a sense of what they are thinking or feeling. This can be immensely helpful in a variety of situations, from sales to relationships. The speaker emphasizes that while body language reading is not perfect, it can be a useful tool for personal development. The conversation is about how to read body language and the different things that different body parts can mean. The first tip is to note the facial features, especially the eyes, as they can convey a lot about what a person is feeling. The second tip is to observe where the eyes are directed, as this can also be significant. The third tip is to notice the general body position, as this can indicate how comfortable the two people are with each other. The fourth tip is to observe the hands, fingers, arms, legs, feet and other body parts, as they can express a lot of things. The conversation discuss the importance of nonverbal communication and how it can often say more than words. Psychologists have long studied the field of kinesics, or body language, in order to better understand human relationships. For managers and leaders, understanding nonverbal cues is essential in order to assess their employees' reactions and thoughts. Outside of the workplace, family members and friends also communicate through nonverbal means. Although silent, these messages can be loud and clear. This delves into body language is a significant factor in communication and in extension, in human relationships. Learn more by reading on the subject and observe people around you to become more skilled in interpreting body language. In both formal and casual communications there's a lot of emphasis placed on the words that people say. So here's some tips to read body language. Number one, note the facial features, especially the eyes. These are the windows to the soul and they convey much of what a person is feeling inside. Speaking of personal development, when you know how to read the signs of body language in other people, you're automatically enhancing yourself as well. Do you know how body language is interpreted? Welcome to Back to Basics, a new series from the Women's Healthcast! Over the next several episodes, we will answer some of the most common questions about sexual and reproductive health and provide resources for parents and supportive adults who may want to start having these conversations with the kids in their lives. Guest experts Dr. Ryan Luellwitz and Dr. Paula Cody will bring us back to the basics of anatomy, gender, sexuality, the menstrual cycle, safe sex, sexually transmitted infections, birth control, bodily autonomy, and so much more. In this first episode, we tackle the basics of anatomy and puberty: Why is it so important to learn and use correct anatomical terms when we are learning about bodies, development and sexual/reproductive health? When should children learn anatomically correct terms for body parts, and what are those parts? What is puberty, and when does it typically happen? There's a lot to cover in this conversation. Reading Joshua 5:1-12 (NLT) ~ Scripture reading followed by discussion. Gen17:9 starts the original call to circumcision. God provided the way across the Jordan, paralyzes the inhabitants of the land with fear, making room for all the Israelite males to be circumcised and recover safely, so that they will bear the mark of the covenant, the covenant that is the reason they are being given the land. The Israelites prepare themselves for battle by obeying the LORD, which was Moses' instruction. Their Bodies bare the mark of the everlasting covenant. Part of God's command is to celebrate. Ex.12:34 makes the way for foreigners to celebrate the LORD's Passover. Circumcision was required to eat the Passover meal and celebrate. Mana was a blessing and a discipline for them to learn to trust God.
How Dozens of My Clients Build Confidence in Their Bodies & Minds Using the SFL Method I developed the (S)trength (F)or (L)ife Method because I was you. A few years ago, I spent most days worrying about food and exercise. How much more coffee can I drink to subside my hunger? How many miles do I need to run today to burn off the cookies? How can I spend more time outside the house to avoid overeating? I dreaded my workouts. I relied on coffee for my every move. I was tired of the guilt I felt around occasionally “indulging” in my favorite foods. And no matter how much I restricted my calories.. Or how much cardio I did… I still hated my body. I thought... “If I could just lose that last 10 pounds.” “If I could just workout because I enjoyed it.” “If I could finally find peace and confidence within my body.” I knew there had to be a different way. Because what I was doing was unsustainable… And honestly, miserable. So I hired my first 1:1 coach. I finally figured out how to move my body in a way that I enjoyed (without running tons of miles), while still enjoying my favorite foods and building a body I loved. Now for the best part… In today's episode, I'm sharing how dozens of women I work with experience this exact same transformation among their bodies and their minds! Let's get to work :) P.S - Join the SFL waitlist opening on Thursday, January 20th - https://bit.ly/SFLMethodWaitlist

Kader Attia, artiste a lancé depuis deux ans le lieu LA COLONIE (barré) dans le 10ème arrondissement de Paris. Photo by Camille Millerand Kader Attia grew up in Paris and in Algeria. Preceding his studies at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and at Escola Massana, Centre d'Art i Disseny in Barcelona, he spent several years in Congo and in South America. The experience of living between different cultures, the histories of which over centuries have been characterised by rich trading traditions, colonialism and multi-ethnic societies, has fostered Kader Attia’s intercultural and interdisciplinary approach of research. For many years, he has been exploring the perspective that societies have on their history, especially as regards experiences of deprivation and suppression, violence and loss, and how this affects the evolving of nations and individuals — each of them being connected to collective memory. His socio-cultural research has led Kader Attia to the notion of Repair, a concept he has been developing philosophically in his writings and symbolically in his oeuvre as a visual artist. With the principle of Repair being a constant in nature — thus also in humanity —, any system, social institution or cultural tradition can be considered as an infinite process of Repair, which is closely linked to loss and wounds, to recuperation and re-appropriation. Repair reaches far beyond the subject and connects the individual to gender, philosophy, science, and architecture, and also involves it in evolutionary processes in nature, culture, myth and history. Following the idea of catharsis, his work aims at Art’s re-appropriation of the field of emotion that, running from ethics to aesthetics, from politics to culture, links individuals and social groups through emotional experience, and that is in danger of being seized by recent nationalist movements In 2016, Kader Attia founded La Colonie, a space in Paris to share ideas and to provide an agora for vivid discussion, that extends his praxis from representation to action. Focussing on decolonialisation not only of peoples but also of knowledge, attitudes and practices, it aspires to de-compartmentalise knowledge by a trans-cultural, trans-disciplinary and trans-generational approach. Driven by the urgency of social and cultural reparations, it aims at reuniting which has been shattered, or drift apart. Kader Attia's work has been shown in group shows and biennials such as the 12th Shanghai Biennial; the 12th Gwangju Biennial; the 12th Manifesta, Palermo; the 57th Venice Biennial; dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel; Met Breuer, New York; Kunsthalle Wien; MoMA, New York; Tate Modern, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris, or The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York - just to name a few. Notable solo exhibitions include “The Museum of Emotion”, The Hayward Gallery, London; “Scars Remind Us that Our Past is Real”, Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona; “Roots also grow in concrete”, MacVal in Vitry-sur-Seine; „The Field of Emotion“, The Power Plant, Toronto; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; SMAK, Gent; Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt; Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts de Lausanne; Beirut Art Center; Whitechapel Gallery, London; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. In 2016, Kader Attia was awarded with the Marcel Duchamp Prize, followed in 2017 by the Prize of the Miró Foundation, Barcelona, and the Yanghyun Art Prize, Seoul. John Kinder brings to life the challenges and problems faced by the disabled veteran in American history from the Civil War to the current day in his evocative book, Paying with Their Bodies: American War and the Problem of the Disabled Veteran (University of Chicago Press, 2015). Considered by many reviewers to be one of the most important books in recent years on the human cost of war, Paying with Their Bodies blends lively anecdotal accounts of individual veterans with the complex questions of their imagined and real place in society before, during, and after their time served. Not surprisingly the answers are at times even more disheartening as Kinder uncovers a pattern of promises made and unfulfilled, in which the only consistencies across time are episodes of exploitation for political and personal gain by others and the eventual neglect as the public memory of their sacrifice fades.
