HT2525 - The Thread That Binds The Achilles heel of multiple-image projects is the risk that viewing the work devolves into a popularity contest. Instead of looking for threads and connections between the images, viewers search for the one image they think is the best or at least touches them deeply. Overcoming this subconscious winnowing project becomes one of the great challenges of presenting a body of work rather than a single "greatest hits" image. The best technique I know is to sort of force-feed the connecting idea. Show your appreciation for our free weekly Podcast and our free daily Here's a Thought… with a donation Thanks!

'Moby-Dick' is recast with a woman at its center in 'Call Me Ishmaelle'

It takes courage to reimagine a classic. Xiaolu Guo was drawn to Herman Melville's “Moby-Dick,” from the first time she read it in her native Chinese. The writing was lyrical — hard to translate — and the descriptions of sailing were dense. But the symbolism of the great white whale and the sea-faring captain obsessed with revenge captivated her. Her new novel is a retelling of this classic with a young girl at its center. Protagonist Ishmaelle goes to sea, disguised as a boy, in a desperate grasp for freedom. She wants to leave poverty, gender norms and religious traditions behind. When she ends up on a whaling ship, captained by a free Black man named Seneca, she meets a swash-buckling crew of people who broaden her world — and ours. Guo joins host Kerri Miller this week to talk about her reimagined “Moby-Dick” which probes gender, race, humanity's connection to animals and the nature of belonging.Guest: Xiaolu Guo is the author of “Radical” and “Nine Continents.” Her new novel is “Call Me Ishmaelle.”Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.

In this episode of WEAPONIZED, George Knapp and Jeremy Corbell delve into the long-secret world of Soviet-era UFO programs, drawing on Knapp's groundbreaking investigative work in Russia during the 1990s. Amid the openness of Glasnost and Perestroika, Knapp traveled to Russia twice, securing unprecedented access to high-ranking military officials, scientists, and classified documents that revealed extensive Soviet UFO investigations, programs which U.S. intelligence believes are still underway. Key revelations include the SETKA program - a decade-long, nationwide effort led by Colonel Boris Sokolov to collect thousands of UFO reports from military units - and Thread 3, a sophisticated analysis initiative aimed at reverse-engineering UFO technology for military advantage. Knapp recounts dramatic incidents documented in the files, such as UFOs hovering over a Ukrainian ICBM base in 1982, where they allegedly entered launch codes and temporarily activated nuclear missiles. The discussion highlights parallels between Soviet and U.S. UFO exploitation efforts, including satellite tracking, pilot encounters, UFO landings and crashes, and the suppression of public discourse despite internal acknowledgments of blatant incursions by a non-human intelligence. Knapp explains his recent decision to release these documents publicly via Mysterywire.com, following their submission to Congress in 2025. The episode also touches on contemporary U.S. developments, including reports of a $10 million facility at Patuxent River Naval Air Station designed to house recovered UAP materials. Corbell and Knapp emphasize the global implications of UFO reverse-engineering races and the need for government transparency. The conversation concludes with the premiere of newly obtained military footage showing thermal orbs in triangular formation, labeled as UAP by U.S. intelligence and Department of War. We are going to step back to the mid 1990s in Tucson, Arizona, to examine two cases that have haunted the city's south side for three decades. In December 1994, 6-year-old Lizette went missing from her apartment complex.  About 13 months later, 7-year-old Karen Grajeda went missing from her apartment complex just 8 miles away.   On the surface, these might seem like isolated incidents, but as local investigators and the FBI began to look deeper, they discovered a disturbing pattern, and they were soon linked to three additional abductions of young girls in the same area between 1993 and 1994. Anyone with information in either of these cases is asked to call the Tucson Police Department at 520-791-4444. There is a $20,000 reward being offered in each case. A journalist uncovers her family secret: They were spies for the Nazis

“You have a good life,” her aunt said. “You don't want to ruin it with the past.”Those words were deeply unsettling to journalist Christine Kuehn. She always suspected there was more to her paternal family history. Her father was kind but evasive, and her aunt flat out refused to discuss it. But no one would talk. Then she got a letter from a screenwriter who asked if her family could be the same Kuehns who spied on Pearl Harbor for the Nazis and shared intel with the Japanese. When she confronted her father, he denied everything. But within an hour, he called back, sobbing, and confessed. So began Kuehn's quest to uncover the truth. It took her and her husband Mark decades to sort through FBI files, letters, historical records and family journals — and even longer for her to absorb and process the fact that her grandparents and aunt were accomplished Nazi spies, largely responsible for the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Her new book, “Family of Spies,” tells her family's shocking history. Turns out, at age 19, Kuehn's aunt Ruth had an affair with Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels. When he learned she was half Jewish, he sent the family to Hawaii — the better to preserve his purity — with a mandate that they spy on the Americans for the Japanese. Kuehn's family obliged and changed the course of history. This week on Big Books and Bold Ideas, Kuehn talks with Kerri Miller about the shame of discovering her family's history and what helped her move beyond it. Guest:Christine Kuehn is a journalist and writer who lives outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Her book is “Family of Spies.” Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.

Thread lifts have been around for years—but misconceptions about safety, longevity, and effectiveness still keep many patients confused. In this episode of The Plastic Surgery Revolution, Dr. Steven Davis explains when threads work, why they work, and who they're actually for. Drawing on decades of experience—including teaching thread techniques nationwide—Dr. Davis breaks down how modern dissolvable threads stimulate collagen, create lift, and can deliver long-lasting results when used correctly. He also explains why threads should never be treated like fillers, how improper aftercare can sabotage results, and why the most powerful outcomes often come from a strategic combination of threads, fillers, and laser treatments. If you've been told threads “don't work,” this episode explains why the problem may not be the threads—but the plan. On March 14, 1998, at a farmhouse in Strong City, Oklahoma, 39-year-old Leonard Dirickson sat down for breakfast with his teenage son. As they were cleaning up, they were interrupted by a mysterious stranger in a truck, inquiring about a horse for sale.  It had been a tough few years for their family farm, so Leonard told his son he was going to leave with the man in hopes of selling one of their horses on another property and that he'd be back that afternoon. But Leonard remains missing to this day in one of the most puzzling cases in Oklahoma history. Leonard Neal Dirickson was 39 years old when he was last seenon March 14, 1998, at his home in Strong City, Oklahoma. He was seen getting into a newer or possibly a 1994 white Ford F150 pickup truck with an unknown man. He told his son that they were headed to Mobeetie, Texas, and Elk City, Oklahoma, to look at horses. Leonard is white, about 6 feet tall, and weighed approximately 200 pounds at the time of his disappearance, with brown hair and a red handlebar mustache. He has grey eyes and a small scar under one eye. He was last seen wearing a brown cap with a green bill and an ACCO feeds logo, a faded black Carhartt brand coat, green jeans, and black and brown shoes or boots. The unidentified man Leonard was last seen with has been described as white, about 6'2”, around 40 years old, and approximately 210lbs with a reddish-brown beard, a long nose, dark eyes, and a thick, round face. He was seen wearing blue jeans, a striped western shirt, a blue jacket, and a cap with the words “No Fear” on the front. He may be right-handed and smokes cigarettes, possibly Marlboro Lights. A sketch has been created and circulated for further reference.   Anyone with information is asked to call the Roger Mills County Sheriff's Office at 580-497-2417. Episode 189: The Thread Written By Andrew Waller and Mike Gagerman This month's episode features The Thread, written by Andrew Waller and Mike Gagerman, the second of two dead pilots built around a shared group text that's been running for years. Here is the log line for this show, A modern ensemble comedy about a group of longtime friends leading diverse chaotic lives who stay connected through a long running daily text thread. Waller and Gagerman previously wrote the cult favorite film Search Party and were behind one of the first viral serialized Twitter threads, Shh… Don't Tell Steve. They're currently developing Last Chance Lawyer for NBC, with Henry Winkler attached to star. The pilot feels authentic and grounded, capturing the accumulated history, shorthand, and emotional honesty of friendships that have lasted for decades. Coming up next week is the interview with Andrew and Mike, followed by a four-way discussion the week after with Andrew, Mike, Aaron Brownstein, and Simon Ganz, the writers of last month's pilot, Guy Text. The cast includes Matt Porter (Family Guy, Good Cop / Great Cop), Krysta Rodriguez (Smash, Halston), Paul Telfer (Vampire Diaries; Days of Our Lives), Andrew Leeds (Ghosts, Barry), Suzy Nakamura (Exploding Kittens, Dead to Me), Beth Stelling (comedian), Malcolm Barrett (The Boys, Timeless), Daniel DiMaggio (American Housewife), Brittany Curran (The Magicians), and Neska Rose (Drama Club). Video of the Zoom table read is available exclusively to Maximum Fun members. Breakneck Through the Bible · Rabbi Bentzi Epstein

Abraham comes back from the battle. The king of Sodom is waiting with an offer: keep all the wealth, just return the people.Abraham won't touch any of it. Not a thread, not a shoe strap. He refuses to let anyone claim they made him rich. But someone else is there too. Melchizedek, king of Salem. He's actually Shem, Noah's son, and he's the high priest. He brings out bread and wine and offers Abraham a blessing. But he makes a critical mistake. He blesses Abraham first, before blessing G-d, and this costs him everything. The priesthood is taken from his line and given to Abraham's descendants forever.Abraham's refusal of the spoils brings its own reward. From that thread and shoelace come two commandments: tzitzit and tefillin. Eternal reminders woven into Jewish life.Twenty-six years later, the same group that Abraham returned to the king of Sodom would be destroyed when fire rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah. The Talmud says Abraham shouldn't have done that. He should have kept them and set them free. The episode digs into a question we all face: how much do we do ourselves, and how much do we trust G-d? Abraham left guards at his base when he went after the four kings. Smart strategy or lack of faith? It depends. What's right for one person at one spiritual level might be wrong for someone else. This is about knowing when to act and when to let go, why even the righteous stumble, and how one reversed blessing changed everything.

At around 1:00 am on December 25, 1945, Jennie Sodder woke up to smoke pouring into her bedroom. She woke up her husband, George, and they started evacuating the house of their nine children. By the time the fire took over the Sodder residence, only Jennie, George, and four of their children made it outside safely. George and two of his sons frantically tried to get into the house to save the remaining children, but they couldn't. When George went to fill up a bucket with water to start extinguishing the flames, the water was frozen, when he went to grab their ladder to get his children from the top story, the ladder was missing; when he went to drive his trucks to the second story window, neither would start despite having worked just the day before. And when they tried to call the fire department for help, no one responded for hours. The only thing the family could do was watch as their home burned to the ground. Hours later, after the smoldering ashes were put out, a group of people began searching for the children's remains, but nothing was found. Not a single bone was found in the ashes. The fire was quickly ruled an accident, and investigators told the family the children's bodies had burned up completely in the fire, leaving nothing of them behind, not even their bones. But between the mishaps, while trying to put out the fire, threats made against the family before the fire, and the strange behavior of authorities throughout the investigation, Jennie and George Sodder refused to believe five of their children were killed in the home. They were convinced their children didn't die in the fire, and they spent the rest of their lives trying to prove it.
