Ed Sheeran Biography Flash a weekly Biography. Ed Sheeran's most significant recent development is the cancellation of both Loop Tour concerts scheduled for September 25 and 26 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Messina Touring and stadium management cited severe weather warnings, heavy rain, and strong winds across New England, emphasizing the safety of fans and staff. Ticketmaster purchases are due to be refunded automatically, while no rescheduled dates have been announced. Variety, the Associated Press, and Messina Touring all reported the decision. The cancellations add another dramatic chapter to what has become one of the most turbulent periods of Sheeran's career. The shows were already under intense scrutiny after Macklemore was removed from the remaining American dates of Sheeran's tour. Macklemore had made pro Palestine remarks during a New Jersey performance, and Robert Kraft's organization said his participation at Gillette Stadium would cross a line, citing what it described as offensive rhetoric and imagery. Those details were reported by Variety and Forbes, although some claims about precisely who made the final decision remain disputed. Sheeran addressed the wider controversy during recent concerts, including an emotional Philadelphia appearance reported by Moneycontrol. He apologized for mistakes, said the suffering in Gaza was catastrophic and unjustifiable, and described the conflict between Israel and Palestine as a human tragedy. ABC News also reported his remarks. Sheeran said he did not want to become an activist musician, but he has now been pulled directly into a debate about free speech, political expression, and corporate influence over live entertainment. The fallout has affected his public image and online following. The Independent, citing Social Blade data, reported that Sheeran lost nearly half a million Instagram followers over roughly a week, while other reports place the decline at more than four hundred thousand. Those figures are estimates rather than an official statement from Sheeran, and the precise cause of every unfollow cannot be independently confirmed. Macklemore announced that he would donate one million dollars from his tour earnings to Palestinian aid organizations and challenged Kraft to match it. Sheeran reportedly pledged two million dollars for humanitarian relief, with Kraft saying he would match that commitment, although the final donation arrangements had not been independently confirmed. Tragically Hip Day in Toronto. 'The Luxury' out of the gate, a tour debut in the encore, and a family of four in seats a text message unlocked.DescriptionAugust 10th, 2016. The Air Canada Centre - the first of three Toronto nights on the Man Machine Poem Tour, and the day Ernie from Denville, New Jersey woke up in his hotel room, flipped on the news, and heard the mayor declare it Tragically Hip Day before he had even gotten out of bed. He had flown up alone for his first-ever Canadian show, eleven club nights deep. The city was already celebrating.Then the lights come up and it is 'The Luxury'. Ernie had waited eleven shows to hear it. Jeff from Vaughan, following this band since 1992, can count the times he has heard it live on one hand. Two songs later comes 'Fiddler's Green', and Scott from Huntsville is looking at grown men crying as far as he can see, understanding exactly how the night is going to go. Third song in. They could do whatever they wanted.The roads in are half the story. Everybody got the same email on the Tuesday morning after the May long weekend - the news of Gord Downie's diagnosis, and a tour nobody knew how to feel about. Scott locked down Kingston hotel rooms before tickets even went on sale, then sweated out the Ticketmaster scramble for four Toronto seats - the morning after watching John Mann and Spirit of the West play a fundraiser at the Horseshoe Tavern, two Canadian heartbreaks stacked onto one walk home. Jeff sent a hockey dad four paragraphs about his life following The Hip, hoping to bring his wife and two kids, and got the answer every fan dreams about: they're yours. Which is how, during 'Fifty-Mission Cap', with Bill Barilko's banner up in the rafters, Jeff came to be filming a verse and then swinging the camera around to catch both his kids singing it back.There is a lot of night in here. 'Nautical Disaster' landing in the first encore as a tour debut (confirmed via setlist.fm, and backed by the notebook Ernie filled out that same evening). The crowd carrying the Toronto line in 'Bobcaygeon', the way Scott remembers it. The “Phantom Power” pair that closed the building down. And then the back half of the conversation jumps ahead to August 20th - Scott behind the stage in Kingston, not breathing until the scanner turned his print-off ticket green, Jeff front row in front of Robby Baker for show number 93, and Ernie back in New Jersey with the Kingston broadcast on the big screen and his son beside him.Somewhere in the middle of it, Scott sums up the entire summer in one sentence: “I've never been so excited for something I didn't want to happen.” So there's that.The panelErnie from Denville, New Jersey - eleven Hip shows in clubs from New York City to Syracuse before this one, his first in Canada and his first in an arena, solo in section 313 and never once feeling alone. Chris went down anyway, watched people offer $200 for a $20 ticket, walked back toward the LRT station, and got face value from the fifteenth person he asked.The beer jug legend — paying a bouncer $20 to work the beer gardens, selling jugs at a markup, and Gord reaching down, taking a swig from Chris's jug, and hurling it into the crowd.The Fully Completely tour show he almost missed: hungover off a flight home from Mexico, picked up at the airport by his dad, who happened to have tickets. They caught it from about song four.For the final tour, a coworker — Kathy Thompson, ticket savant — tipped him off about the presale three days early. He landed what he calls the worst seats of his life and has never been happier about bad seats.Who They Went WithKirsten took her friend Natasha to night two, up in section 201; she had been on the floor for night one with her now-wife, who had never seen the Hip before.Seeing the tour from two different vantage points meant two different shows — and from the upper level she could suddenly see the teleprompters on stage.Chris invited both of the buddies from that very first show — one in Victoria, one living in France — and both had to bow out. His brother got the ticket, and the two of them have a lot of Hip history together.The Set ListOpens with "Blow at High Dough."Chris on the run of Courage / At the Hundredth Meridian / Wheat Kings / Fifty Mission Cap — four of his all-time favourites back to back. He told his brother he could have walked out happy right there.The deep-album slot that night: We Are the Same. Kirsten singles out "Now the Struggle Has a Name" — she still remembers the notes Gord hit — and talks about the mood of "Coffee Girl" and "Morning Moon."Chris is candid that the later records don't sit with him the way the early ones do, and names "An Inch an Hour" as the one that got away.Both were set-list watching night to night, trying to guess which album would get pulled next — and Kirsten notes what it meant for Gord to rotate the set at all, given how well known his struggles with lyrics were (see: "Cordelia" quietly disappearing from set lists for years).The EncoresEncore 1: Greasy Jungle → Scared → Grace, TooEncore 2: Fireworks → BobcaygeonKirsten on closing with "Bobcaygeon" instead of the usual barn-burner — phones and lighters up across the building, and Gord taking long moments to look out and take it in.Chris connects the "checkerboard floors" line to the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, and reads the closer as the band pointing back at where they started. He still goes to the Horseshoe every time he's in Toronto.Gord on StageThe eye contact — a recurring observation across this series. Kirsten notes Gord historically avoided looking at people because singing faces threw him off, and that on this tour the fourth wall came down.Her impression of him off stage from a brief meeting: quiet, soft-spoken, very funny, extremely thoughtful.Chris was struck by how minimalist the production was — no big screens, just five guys, a silver suit, the feather hat and the Jaws shirt.The honest part: Gord was visibly struggling in places, missing notes, with the band filling the gaps — and getting noticeably stronger night over night. Kirsten describes a collective will from the crowd pushing him through.The Last Night in the BarnThis was the final concert at Rexall Place / Northlands Coliseum before the move to Rogers Place — so the night carried a second goodbye.Chris and his brother started at the Vinyl Needle downtown (dinner, beers, and a Hip tribute band playing to a very envious crowd), then rode the LRT through pouring rain.Walking into a building he had been going to since 1980 and finding it stripped and sterile — memorabilia pulled down, replaced with deep-cut oddities like an old Edmonton Drillers photo.Kirsten on saying goodbye to a venue where she had seen Oilers playoffs, countless bands, and the Hip many times over.When It Hit"Courage." Chris looked left, looked right, looked down, looked at his brother — everyone was crying. First time he had ever cried at a concert.Kirsten describes it coming in waves, every night, over and over: this is it, this is the final tour.Chris screaming himself hoarse for one more encore — and getting it.Walking out: heavy, but joyful. The same line over and over on the way to the train — "I can't believe I was here."August 20: The CBC National BroadcastKirsten missed it live — Edmonton Fringe obligations with her wife — caught what she could on CBC Radio in the car, then watched her recording that night and lost it.Her take on Gord's address to Trudeau and the reconciliation focus of his final chapter, and on the optimism she thinks the country still needs.Chris hosted a house party for 15 or so, most of them less invested than he was, and had to explain to a room of nieces and nephews why Uncle Chris was crying on the couch.Both reflect on the outdoor watch parties across the country — and Chris floats the idea of doing one for the 10th anniversary.What They'd Tell Someone Who Wasn't ThereChris on the Hip as Canadiana nobody else has matched — the loon call in "Wheat Kings," getting away with naming an album Road Apples, the reflexive "Jacques Cartier, right this way" he and his buddy blurted out at a statue in France — and on being unabashedly proud to be Canadian.Kirsten remembers a spotlit banner behind the stage reading "Canada Loves the Hip," and lands on the privilege of witnessing it: great musicianship, great ambassadors, good people making good art.Notable Quotes“He didn't just sing it. Toutless co-founder Gary Devitt is this week's guest on the podcast, and we talk about where the Irish music live ticketing industry is at in the face of increased pricing, extra deluxe and platinum tiers and an Americanisation of buying tickets. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference has made a lot of waves since last we talked, what with Millsaps and then Southwestern electing to rejoin the SCAC starting in 2027. So, at the risk of there perhaps being a third member of the Southern Athletic Association returning to the SCAC before we could get the podcast out, we sat down with Dwayne Hanberry, commissioner of the SCAC, to discuss the changes, the status of Gallaudet in the conference, and more.
