Tim Jensen, a Marine Corps combat veteran, is on a mission to stop veteran suicide. The powerful veteran activist and head of Grunt Style Foundation (advocacy arm of America's patriotic T-Shirt brand Grunt Style) talked with us about the current state of suicide prevention. Jensen shared a surprising connection between suicide and psychotropic drugs, and others for anxiety, depression and even meds used to help vets quit smoking. He also illustrated how alternative medical treatments, widely known to improve the lives of vets with head injuries and PTSD, are being underutilized or even ignored. We discussed the political games unfolding as DOGE cuts continue to slice the federal workforce. And we examine the path forward; including upcoming meetings with House Veterans Affairs committee members, a GSF-VFW partnership, and a proposal currently being reviewed by officials in the Trump administration. Today we're talking with Tim Jensen, Marine Corps combat vet and outspoken leader of “Grunt Style” apparel. Grunt Style T-shirts are loved by military vets and easy to spot with the infantry battle flag and crossed rifles on the sleeves. Jensen shared how this multi-million-dollar apparel company started with the founder selling shirts out of his car.More than just apparel with massive veteran appeal, Grunt Style often steps up and becomes a loud voice supporting important veteran causes. (Like investing several years fighting Congress to pass Toxic Exposure legislation.) Jensen shared more on their latest cause- calling out the city of Chicago (and Marine Corps) for closing a Marine Corps monument in front of a building that has become housing for immigrants. Jensen also shared strong feelings about VA managed veteran health care and a lack of transparency on the heavy amounts of prescription meds they still doll out to vets. We also hear how the Grunt Style Foundation is giving vets access to alternative treatments like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which the VA still refuses to utilize for treatment of TBI, PTSD, etc.We also discussed some of the hilarious shirt designs just released for Summer. Jensen, the "1st Sgt of Fashion" explains how GS shirts are more than just patriotic, but they actually help build a community among vets, patriots and anyone who loves whiskey, bacon and freedom! Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate and let's go change this world!  On today's episode, Jeff welcomes guest Tim Jensen of Grunt Style. Tim is a Marine Corps veteran and leader in the business and advocacy veteran community. Born in Chicago, he is currently the Co-Owner and Chief Brand Officer for Grunt Style and lives in San Antonio. Grunt Style is one of the fastest growing retail and e-commerce brands in the country. In the Marine Corps, Tim served as an amtracker gone infantry man and was deployed to Iraq in September of 2004.  To begin, Tim explains his transition from amtracs to infantry, which most officers actually do the other way around. He participated in over 200 combat patrols in the extremely violent Northern Iraq, for which he was awarded Combat Action Ribbon and Navy Achievement Medal. He finds it immensely important that we celebrate the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our country from danger. By working alongside Grunt Style's CEO to align the brand's vision with its values, Tim's goal is to help grow the brand and ensure that their products meet the highest expectation of demand. Although the brand doesn't directly take any political side, they do recognize that the United States Constitution is something that should be known, celebrated and defended. Grunt Style also strives to be a leader in pride of the self, our military and our country.  Then, Tim shares about his journey from the military to Grunt Style. After returning to Chicago from the military, Tim found his life in a state that he was not proud of. Understanding that he was in need of making a major change, he quit his job and enrolled in college thanks to the GI Bill. He graduated in 3 years at the top of his class with a degree in video game design. He interviewed with Grunt Style and accepted a position working with the company's inventory. 11 years later, he is Co-Owner and Chief Executive of the business. He is also the Chairman of the Grunt Style Foundation, a nonprofit committed to serving veterans and their families. What Tim enjoyed most about his time in Iraq, he shares, is that he was able to see a group of people get the ability to vote for their own government for the first time in their lives. He als sheds light on the freedoms we have as Americans that we often take for granted. Finally, he shares that Grunt Style's goal is to continue sharing their love of freedom, our country and the self with people every day. They also plan to help people understand that patriotism is not a bad word. Learn more about Jeff Newkirk. Do you have any game-changers in your life? Why did Republican Senators vote against The PACT Act?! Which would give care and benefits to vets dying from exposure to toxic burn pits in war zones? We checked in with Tim Jensen, combat vet and Grunt Style apparel 1st Sgt, who was spending the night on the Capitol steps in DC for a "Fire Watch" protest. He and millions of other vets are literally ready to fight for this bill, but it seems all the US Senate wants to do is play politics.Republicans claim Democrats put a "budget gimmick" in the bill so they can spend more money on pork projects. Democrats claim Republicans won't pay for vets dying from diseases they developed after fighting wars they voted for.Jensen said, "What we have here is partisan politics, where the veteran is left holding the bag .. only this time the bag is tied to death."We examined who really obstructed over veterans, and Sen. Safe spaces are crucial for the expression of climate feelings. Thomas and Panu talk about the loneliness people feel about climate experiences. What does it take to “hold space” for climate feelings, to “stand one's ground” and “contain” experiences of sadness, grief or rage; and to practice  “climate cosmopolitanism”? Panu looks back to pioneering work by Chellis Glendinning and shares Tim Jensen's more recent concept of “ecologies of guilt.” Thomas reminds us of the role of values and that “We hurt where we care” echoing the writing of psychologist Steven Hayes, and classic insights about the “pains of an ecological education” going back to Aldo Leopold.

Marcio Sicoli loves what he does: Coaching to Olympic medals, living vicariously through his players

It was 2005 when Tatiana Minello and Mimi Amaral needed a coach. Not just any coach. The natives of Rio de Janeiro were making the move to the AVP. They needed someone who could speak English. “You speak English!” they said to Marcio Sicoli. “Let’s use you!” The United States didn’t know it at the time, but one of the most successful beach volleyball coaches of this generation was about to cross its borders. Sicoli was more than just a 25-year-old who both knew his way around the beach and could speak English. Already, he had an Olympic silver medal, having coached Shelda Kelly Bruno Bede and Adriana Brandao Behar to a silver at the Athens Games. That would seem young, by American standards, to have risen to the top of any kind of hierarchy, be it in sports or business, at that age. It is not so in Brazil. “I was really involved in playing and at an early age, it was ‘Do you want to play or do you want to coach?’” Sicoli recalled on SANDCAST: Beach volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter. Sicoli took stock of his frame: 5-foot-11. Not short, but also not the fast track to developing as an elite player in the perpetually deepening Brazilian pipeline. “Playing,” he said, “wasn’t an option.” He took his father’s advice and enrolled in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, setting for the indoor team but turning his focus mainly to his degree in Physical Education. He graduated in 2001, the same year he achieved a Level II certification in Brazilian Beach Volleyball, becoming the youngest to hold that title. “I knew, early on, that I was a personal person,” he said. “I wouldn’t be talking to machines, I wouldn’t be talking to computers. I didn’t like that. I knew that. It was natural. In college, my sophomore year, I was playing on a team and I got an internship with PE at a high school and that was it. It’s that passion: To be with people, and drive through other peoples’ success. That’s what coaching is. If you see a process and you see something really cool happening that is not with you but someone else, and when that happens, great, and you move onto the next one.” In 2007, his next move wasn’t an easy one. As it goes when you achieve certain levels of success, offers became coming in. Holly McPeak was one of the many to take note of Sicoli’s talents as a coach. The three-time Olympian offered him a full-time job, in the United States, to coach her and Logan Tom. She’d set him up with indoor contacts so he could make money during the off-season months. Here Sicoli was, with a “job for life” as a PE teacher in Rio, a wife and family in Brazil – and an incredible offer in the United States. “I talked to my dad and he looked at me and said ‘Worst case scenario, you’re coming back and I’ll be here for you,’” Sicoli recalled. “I said ‘Ok, let’s do it.’” McPeak and Tom fizzled, but the indoor contact McPeak set Sicoli up with was Tim Jensen, then an assistant coach at Pepperdine. “Twelve years later,” he said, smiling his cherubic smile. Twelve years later, Sicoli is living a life that would have been difficult to imagine as a PE teacher in Rio. He’s an American citizen now, something he takes immense pride in, and though you are not likely to get him to talk politics, he will tell you that he’s thrilled to vote in the upcoming election. He has remarried, with an infant, Max, and another on the way. He has coached in two more Olympics, winning gold with Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor in London and bronze with Walsh Jennings and April Ross in 2016. He was promoted to head coach at Pepperdine in 2019, when Nina Matthies retired after an astonishing 35 years, one of the most successful individuals in the game.   Sicoli has never talked to machines. He does not sit in front of computers all day long. He’s doing what he has always been enamored with: Working with people, building relationships, thriving on the success of those he helps.    “I love what I do,” he said. “I don’t want to go anywhere. Hopefully I can do 20 more years then I can retire to the beachfront.”

A friend of occasional host Dave Dahl, Tim Jensen is a Nebraska native who grew up in a mixed, but not particularly violent neighborhood. But it did lead him to drinking, which became his addiction of choice. It didn't start out as alcoholism, but more like a right of passage. That lifestyle contributed to his father dying when Tim was 12 and his sister was caught up in drugs. Tim is philosophical about it, having seen both better and worse situations for growing up in his travels around the world as a videographer. A smart kid, Tim's humor and mouth was both good and bad for him, making him popular with adults but sometimes a terror with teachers. His intelligence and athletic ability got him into the University of Nebraska, but Tim liked to "coast" on his natural ability rather than working hard. That attitude and a head injury put him into the communications department. That got him into a news network where he was employed, and found out he had a natural camera eye and a real gift. It put him into a place where he was married, had a house and a family. But the alcohol called and Tim went through the ups and downs that put him behind bars and put him out of work in many places. However, he came to that realization he was powerless in the face of alcohol and that's when life started to turn around. If you've ever wondered how to spot an opportunity or how to grab on to one, today's guest has those answers for you. Tim Jensen is a Marine Corps veteran, a leader, patriot, and master at capitalizing on opportunities.  Where some see nothing, and others see an insult, Tim sees potential. This, no doubt, served him well in the military and absolutely serves him well now.  We featured Daniel Alarick, a veteran entrepreneur and owner of the wildly patriotic and successful company Grunt Style, not long ago. Along our way we found Tim Jensen. Tim was initially turned down for a position at Grunt Style, and now he's the COO. He's also claiming un-staked territory in the world of shooting competitions in a revolutionary move that's about to shake things up.  Listen in as Tim shares with us, how he went from rejection to partner, and how he's learned to spot hidden opportunities he turns into goldmines.
