Josef Koudelka was born in Czechoslovakia the year Germany annexed the Sudetenland. His childhood was overshadowed by Nazi occupation. He lived under the postwar communist regime, and watched Soviet tanks rolled into Prague in 1968.His work is permeated by feelings of tragedy but the man himself is surprisingly optimistic, seizing on the present moment while appreciating the beauty of life.Biographer Melissa Harris joined me to talk about Koudelka's wandering life, his remarkable network of friends, and his interest in capturing the end of things. His 2015 film “Koudelka Shooting Holy Land” follows iconic Czech photographer Josef Koudelka's journey through Israel and Palestine as he captures the essence of that conflicted land. I prefer the landscapes of Wynn Bullock over Ansel Adams, the portraits of Paul Strand over those of Annie Leibovitz, the daily life photographs of Josef Sudek over those of Dorothea Lange, and the reportage of Josef Koudelka over that of Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Lo hemos visto mil veces dentro de un rectángulo, con esta charla os invito a que os adentréis en su mirada, en la manera en la que él observa y lee el mundo a través de la cámara que lo acompaña a todas partes. Hoy, en Calle Oscura, Víctor Clavijo. Desde entonces Víctor ha participado en decenas de películas, series y cortometrajes que le han valido varios premios de la Unión de Actores y una nominación a los Goya como actor revelación. Viendo su currículo y atendiendo a su incesante actividad de divulgación de la cultura – también a través de las redes sociales – entiendo que se califique como un culo de mal asiento, pero es que además de alguna manera se las ha apañado para retomar una vieja afición e inmortalizar con su cámara a sus compañeros, los lugares a los que viaja y su día a día, revelando y positivando sus propias copias. Bil Brown is a lens-based artist living and working in Los Angeles. Whether working in portraiture, fashion, or photojournalism, Bil's imagery captures energetic moments of the conscious world, as well as the foreboding of what is to come. Often using his work as a platform for advancing ideas, social-change, and excising historical reference addressing current events, Bil pushes the boundaries of his visual storytelling as a “concrete-poetry” infused with empathy for our current cultural milieu. Bil's still photography has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows. His 2018 show at the Leica Gallery LA, PROTEST, documented the protests following the 2016 election of an American President. In 2020, during the global pandemic, Bil started a teaching series with Leica Akademie entitled Fragments Toward the History of Photography and plans on publishing a series of short run books covering the time leading up to and during the tumultuous 20th year of the 21st Century. Originally a writer, Bil is an MFA graduate of Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School where his teachers included co-founder Allen Ginsberg. In the late 1990s Bil co-founded the Prague School of Poetics, which received grants from the Rockefeller Center, the NEA and Arts International. The school supported, published and ran community projects for artists and writers in Denver, Louisville, New York, Chicago and Prague. In 2000, The Prague school put on the summer festival of international arts Prazska Skola Poetiky. The festival focused on the relationship of the Avant Garde between the Americas and Eastern Europe. Participating artists included Czech Surrealists Jan and Eva Svankmejer, Lydia, and Czech photographer Josef Koudelka. Bil lives in Los Angeles, CA with his family and often travels to Europe and Asia, and across the Americas.

Originaire du Nord de la France, le photographe s’est fait connaître par un premier ouvrage paru en 2019 aux éditions EYD, Northscape, consacré à une série sur les paysages péri-urbains de sa région, dans la lignée du mouvement américain des «New Topographics». Thomas a ensuite sorti tout récemment un deuxième livre intitulé Eve, la montagne et la jeune fille. « Ça paraît simple, mais ça parle de présence dans les lieux, donc une poésie de l’attente, mais attente de quoi ? » Bernard Plossu nous annonce la couleur dans la préface. Avec un travail plus narratif et personnel, Thomas Klotz documente le quotidien de sa fille d’une manière très touchante : les lieux qu’elle traverse, son appartement, son regard, ses amies, ses doutes... Thomas Klotz, c’est une vie haute en couleurs, comme ses photos. Avocat de formation, il a aussi été producteur de film, notamment de La prochaine fois je viserai le cœur, avec Guillaume Canet. Adolescent, il veut devenir photographe, comme son père, mais se « range » finalement en réalisant un métier plus viable. Il revient à la photographie récemment et y consacre désormais la plupart de son temps. Un artiste dont en entendra parler, pour sûr. “Josef Koudelka” Ruinesà la BnF François Mitterrand, Parisdu 15 septembre au 16 décembre 2020Commissariat :Héloïse Conésa, conservatrice au département des Estampes et de la photographie, BnF Bernard Latarjet, administrateur culturelPendant près de trente ans, Josef Koudelka a sillonné environ 200 sites archéologiques du pourtour méditerranéen, dont il a tiré des centaines de photographies panoramiques en noir et blanc. De ce projet singulier, la Bibliothèque nationale de France présente 110 tirages exceptionnels : un ensemble inédit intitulé Ruines, qui révèle toute la force et la beauté du lexique visuel de Koudelka. La BnF met ainsi à l'honneur l'un des derniers grands maîtres de la photographie moderne, un photographe à l'oeuvre monumentale, qu'Henri Cartier-Bresson considérait comme son « frère » en photographie et dont il avait décelé l' « oeil de peintre ».Cette exposition est accompagnée d'un don exceptionnel consenti par le photographe au département des Estampes et de la photographie de la BnF de près de 170 tirages issus de cette même série.« Les Grecs et les Romains ont été les plus grands paysagistes de l'Histoire et dès lors, pour moi, photographier le paysage, c'était donner à voir cette admirable science de l'espace, de la lumière et des formes. Success as a photographer means to never stop shooting new photos! If we use this as our definition for photography and art, then perhaps Henri Cartier-Bresson wasn’t a successful photographer (he gave up photography), and we can consider Richard AVEDON (died while on assignment) and Josef Koudelka (in his 80s and still traveling and making new photos) as highly successful.
1968, Josef Koudelka a trente ans. Il vient de consacrer six années à photographier les Gitans et l'univers du théâtre, mais n'a encore jamais couvert de faits d'actualité. Le Printemps de Prague lui en donne l'occasion. Dans la nuit du 21 août, les chars du pacte de Varsovie pénètrent dans la capitale tchécoslovaque. Rentré la veille de Roumanie, il photographie les événements et parvient à faire sortir ses images du pays. Elles trouvent refuge à New York et, un an plus tard, Magnum Photos diffuse son reportage en attribuant les images à un auteur anonyme pour protéger Koudelka, ce qui n'empêche pas ce dernier de recevoir le prix Robert Capa.

La historia y vida de Peter Turnley es tan fascinante y sorprendente que no sé por dónde empezar. Nace a mediados de los 50 en Indiana, probablemente uno de los estados más conservadores de EEUU. A pesar de ello, se educa en un entorno liberal. Su pasión por la fotografía surge a raíz de una lesión deportiva en la rodilla cuando tiene tan sólo 16 años. Mientras está recuperándose en el hospital, sus padres le regalan un libro de Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ese libro le lleva a comprar su primera cámara y a dedicar todo el tiempo libre que antes dedicaba al deporte, a merodear por las calles de Fort Wayne. El final de la década de los 60 y todos los 70 son una época de transformación y revolución en la que los jóvenes como Peter ponían en duda todo lo establecido y, sobre todo los ideales de sus padres. Por lo que, a pesar de empezar la universidad cursando estudios de arte, decide abandonarlos al cabo de un año y en 1975 se marcha a vivir uno año a París. A partir de ahí, su vida cambia para siempre. Aterriza en una ciudad muy dividida, en la que el telón de acero estaba a tan sólo 3 horas de tren. Y se dedica a aprender francés y a lanzarse a las calles con su cámara. A su vuelta a EEUU retoma la universidad (literatura francesa) y comienza su obsesión por volver a París. Al terminar sus estudios, dedica un año a trabajar como obrero construyendo autopistas y ahorra 20.000 USD, una fortuna. Vuelve a París, claro. Y a partir de ahí se dedica a dos cosas: trabajar en Picto, el mejor laboratorio de revelado de la ciudad, y estudiar en el Institut d’Etudes Politiques, uno de los mejores centros formativos del país. La gran mayoría de la clase política francesa estudia ahí y Peter es compañero de Nicholas Sarkozy. Al terminar, se convierte en el asistente de Robert Doisneau y empieza a trabajar para Rapho, una de las mejores agencias europeas de la época. Al mismo tiempo, conoce a maestros de la talla de Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edouard Boubat y Josef Koudelka entre otros. Gracias a Rapho, empieza a trabajar como fotoperiodista para grandes publicaciones tanto estadounidenses (New York Times, Time, Newsweek) como francesas. En 1986, se convierte en el corresponsal de Newsweek y viaja por el mundo capturando con su cámara los eventos políticos más importantes. Gracias a sus estudios y capacidad de síntesis, consigue adelantarse a la competencia de manera sistemática, llegando antes que cualquier otro reportero y consiguiendo la exclusiva, por supuesto. Durante más de 30 años ha viajado a más de 90 países y ha cubierto todo lo que te puedas imaginar (no hay más que echar un vistazo a sus ensayos fotográficos).
Petr Hricko je fotograf s veľmi špecifickým štýlom. Jeho levitujúce portréty, či fotky (nielen islandskej) prírody sú ľahko rozoznateľné. Hricu som navštívil v jeho rodných Krušných horách, kúsok od jeho “obyváku” v lese. Tam často fotí a trávi čas so svojou parťáčkou Boony. Viac než hodinu sme sa bavili o živote freelance fotografa v Čechách, o jeho kreatívnom procese, ale aj o nenávisti na sociálnych sieťach. 27 Contexts –An Anecdotal History in Photography by Mark Alice Durant was published by Saint Lucy Books (January, 2017) with 288 pages and 90 Color and black and white images. 27 Contexts is a series of linked essays that examine how photographs are inextricably bound in our personal and collective histories. Beginning with the author’s childhood obsession with his parents’ wedding album through a lifetime making photographs, teaching, and writing about photography, Durant’s narrative weaves memoir with photographic history and theory. Illustrated with a broad spectrum of images from family snapshots to Hubble space imagery, to the work of artists such as Josef Koudelka, Julia Margaret Cameron, Larry Sultan, Maya Deren, Odilon Redon, Nan Goldin, David Wojnarowicz and Chris Marker, 27 Contexts describes a life immersed in the quotidian, the political, and the enigmatic aspects of photography. Durant has contributed to numerous catalogs, monographs and anthologies including The Passionate Camera: Photography and Bodies of Desire, The Gothic, Jimmie Durham and Marco Breuer: Early Recordings. Magnum legend Chris Steele-Perkins was born in Burma in 1947 to a Burmese mother and an English father, who brought him back to England when he was 2 years old. He published his first photobook The Teds in 1979 and shortly after that joined Magnum photos after an invitation to apply from none other than Josef Koudelka. He subsequently travelled all over the world, covering many of the major global conflicts of the 80’s and 90’s in between working extensively in his home country, and producing a number of books of that work, along with those from Afghanistan and later from his wife’s native country of Japan. He has won, to name but a few awards, The Oscar Barnack Prize, The Robert Capa Gold Medal and a number of World Press awards, and all that despite the fact that he doesn’t really consider himself to be a photojournalist.

Kazi Riasat Alve is a young photographer based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He studied business at the University of Chittagong and in Dhaka, but became interested in photography when a friend gave him a hand-me-down Nikon D40. His specific interest in documentary photography came after seeing works of master photographers such as Josef Koudelka, Daido Moriyama, Alex Webb and Raghu Rai. He has participated in a documentary photography workshop conducted by Agence Vu’ photographer Pieter Ten Hoopen and is enrolled in the documentary photography mentorship program under prominent Bangladeshi documentary photographer Saiful Huq Omi at Counter Foto. His photography has received recognition by various global organizations, most recently in the 2013 Ian Parry Scholarship where he was a awarded ‘Commended’. His photographs has been exhibited in many parts of the world including London’s Somerset House, as part of the Sony World Photography Awards, and at MOTHER London gallery in conjunction with the Ian parry Scholarship, above. His work has also been exhibited in Singapore, Australia, Romania, India, Slovakia and his home country Bangladesh. Recently he is also featured in The New Yorker Magazine’s “Photo Booth” as one of the emerging photographers of the world. His works also published in many prestigious international publications including Sunday Times Magazine, The New Yorker Magazine, and Documentary Photography Review magazine and leading local newspapers of Bangladesh.
