Today's guest is a titan of political journalism - someone whose calm, incisive reporting helped us make sense of the madness during one of the most dramatic chapters in American political history. It's Jon Sopel, the former BBC North America Editor, who spent eight rollercoaster years covering the United States, through Trump, through Covid, through history being made in real time. He's interviewed presidents, grilled press secretaries, and yes - even been shouted at by Donald Trump himself. Now, Jon's back on home turf - though the country he's returned to isn't quite the Britain he left behind. In his brilliant new book Strangeland, Jon turns his razor-sharp eye on post-Brexit Britain, peeling back the layers of a nation that feels unfamiliar even to someone who grew up here. It's part political memoir, part social commentary, and entirely unputdownable. These days, you'll know Jon as one-third of the brilliant trio behind The News Agents, one of the UK's most popular news podcasts, which he co-hosts with Emily Maitlis and Lewis Goodall. It's completely redefined how many people consume the news - and it's an absolute must-listen if you don't already. In this episode, we dive into the shifting political landscapes of both the UK and the US and of course, we set off on Jon's Travel Diaries - from his long stint in Washington D.C. to the sun-drenched Riviera, the energy of Rio, and the beauty of Sydney.Holly's Destination Recap: Puente Romano Hotel, Marbella, Spain Jon's Destination Recap:New York City, USA French Riviera, FranceSt Paul de Vence, France La Colombe D'or, St Paul de Vence, France Paris, FranceMusée Marmottan Monet, Paris, FranceJardin du Ranelagh, Paris, France Andia (formerly Restaurant La Gare), Paris, France Afghanistan Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Tokyo, Japan Sydney, Australia Noosa, Queensland, Australia Blackberry Farm, Smoky Mountains, Tennessee, USAMaine, USANantucket, Massachusetts, USAShelter Island, New York, USACosta RicaThe Galapagos RwandaStrangeland: Is This Britain's New Normal? I share our adventures, including our brush with fame on the tarmac as well as our discovery of the Catalina A24-381 flying boat wreck — a haunting piece of history linked to Rathmines, not far from my own backyard.  It's a place of natural wonders, and a reminder of just how extraordinary our corner of the world can be.

We loved revisiting charming villages like Bibury, Burford, and Stow-on-the-Wold, with their honey-coloured stone buildings and rich history. But it was the little moments back at the barn that made it truly special: mornings by the fire, countryside walks straight from the door, late-night hot tub soaks, and that deep, peaceful quiet you only find in the countryside. If you want to be the first find out who is joining me on next week's episode come and follow me on Instagram I'm @hollyrubenstein, and you'll also find me on TikTok - I'd love to hear from you. In Seoul, my friend Yijoo introduced me to the unique Korean sauna culture and local delicacies, while in Japan, I explored hidden gems with a native friend, indulging in everything from bamboo forests to raw chicken dishes. Returning to Singapore for a brief yet memorable evening with friends, I reflect on the transformative nature of this trip. The journey's end is bittersweet, filled with gratitude for the people I've met and the experiences I've had. Hello and welcome to this bonus Destination Special of The Travel Diaries. Yes, I am back for a second time this week, as we continue to celebrate California and all it has to offer, today bringing to life one of my personal favourite spots, Greater Palm Springs. I was there in 2019 as part of a much bigger US road trip, which took me through all of California, and it's one of the places I think about most when I'm daydreaming about far off lands. It's nestled in the heart of California's Coachella Valley, a couple of hours drive from LA, and it's a desert oasis that's been capturing the hearts of travellers for generations. It's where 1950s celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley spent their weekends, played golf at championship courses, and wined and dined the desert night away. With that Rat Pack spirit still lingering in the air, it has a unique allure that draws you in from the moment you arrive. Picture an elegant city framed by the towering San Jacinto Mountains and lined with impossibly tall swaying palm trees. A nexus of natural beauty, wellness, and culture, a living canvas of perfectly preserved mid-century modern architecture, offering such an intoxicating blend of nostalgia and sophistication.I'm joined today by Steven Biller, he's a Palm Springs legend, having edited Palm Springs Life Magazine for over 20 years, and we uncover his Palm Springs travel diaries, his all time favourites, his hidden gems, and top recommendations as someone who knows it so well. From its food and art scenes to its wild outdoors and hiking trails, there is so much to experience in Greater Palm Springs. I really hope you enjoy getting a flavour of it now. We started our Travel Brat Texas trip by flying Delta into Dallas, picking up a car from my fave new rental car company, Thrifty, and scooting over to the most beautiful little historic town. The historic town of McKinney, Texas, was about 45 minutes from the airport and a must-visit hidden gem on the outskirts of Dallas! We stayed in the most charming hotel- The Grand Hotel of McKinney. The Grand Hotel was built in 1885 by the Heard Brothers. When built, the Grand consisted of an original 14 rooms, a Grand Ballroom, and Rick's Chophouse. It was only 15,000 square feet! Later, the Tower was added, expanding the hotel to 45 rooms. From the Willy Nelson book in our room to the Grand Ballroom and rustic red brick walls, the Grand Hotel was charming from head to toe. My favorite part was the tasteful paintings on every floor and in every room, and the little library at the end of the hall right by our room!Check out the Grand Hotel's Experience Page for the 411 on McKinney. The town of McKinney was quaint and charming. For morning coffee, there are two great spots: Layered and Filtered. Layered had the best hot chocolate and a killer lavender late. The most remarkable addition to the restaurant was the little robot cat tray that brought out our food. Filtered has live music along with Cadillac Pizza, Harvest, Lone Star Wine, The Pub, The Celt, and Rick's Lounge. These spots, as well as Room One Eleven, and Barron Creek are also great for a cold crisp beer.If you are staying in McKinney, you must take the day to mozy around and visit all the adorable little shops and stores. Some town favorites are Ambrosia, Little Red Hen, Birds & Words, Antique Company, Homeology, Fair & Square, Sharla's, and Cotton Hearts.Other must-try restaurants in McKinney are The Yard, Local Yocal, Patina Green, and Urban Grill. For Historical cities, check out Chestnut Square Heritage Village, Collin County Farm Museum, Collin County History Museum, Heard Natural Science Museum, and the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts. For a great show, check out the McKinney Performing Arts Center.McKinney has a plethora of art and antiques. Explore the art at Kim Guthrie Antique Company, MillHouse, and The Last Art Gallery.Be sure to bring an umbrella so that you can stay dry! Texas weather is totally unpredictable! McKinney is a small town, so I recommend visiting for one to three days maximum.
