Discussing the finale of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. We have some prompting questions that we may discuss during this discussion. Remember to like and subscribe. 1. What makes a "true" knight in Westeros? 2. Duncan's discussion about his foot versus the the usefulness of Prince Baelor. The value of each and what that means in Westeros? Is Baelor worth more than Duncan's foot? Is this justice or chivalry gone wrong? 3. The hedge knight vs real knight depiction is a real thing in this show. How do you feel about that critique? 4. Was Duncan ever knighted? Say he wasn't, does that matter? 5. Let's clear up the 7 vs 9 kingdoms thing. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings Westeros back to basics — no dragons, no throne room scheming (well… less of it), just one towering hedge knight and his sharp, secret-packed squire trying to survive the politics of chivalry. Dunk is earnest, broke, and way in over his head. Egg is smarter than he lets on. The show trades epic spectacle for grounded storytelling, focusing on honor, class, and the quiet tension bubbling beneath tournaments and banners. It's smaller in scale than Game of Thrones, but richer in heart. A slow burn? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. Season Endings and Real-World Goodbyes This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl break down the Season 1 finale of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, reflect on the season as a whole, and celebrate the life and career of actor Robert Carradine. Did the finale land the joust, or did it pull up short at the lists? And where does this first season rank among HBO's growing Westerosi saga? Plus, we say goodbye to a certified nerd icon. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 News Bites – Robert Carradine: 5:30 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale Review: 13:47 Season 1 Retrospective: 40:12 Final Thoughts: 46:52 News Bites Robert Carradine (1954–2026) Robert Carradine, best known for his role as Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds, has passed away. Carradine was part of the legendary Carradine acting family, son of John Carradine and brother to David and Keith Carradine. While he built a long résumé in film and television, he became a generational touchstone for playing the underdog genius in the 1984 cult classic Revenge of the Nerds and its sequels. Beyond that franchise, Carradine appeared in projects such as The Long Riders, Lizzie McGuire, King of the Nerds, and numerous television roles across decades. He embodied a very specific cinematic archetype: the smart outsider who eventually wins. For an entire era of fandom, he helped make “nerd” aspirational. We tip the pocket protector in respect. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale Episode Title: ‘The Morrow’ Director: Sarah Adina Smith Writer: Ira Parker & Ti Mikkel Network: HBO The Season 1 finale brings Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg's first major Westerosi chapter to a close. Lyonel invites Dunk to move to Storm’s End, but Dunk believes that he brings only bad luck. Baelor’s body is cremated at his funeral. Dunk finds Valarr, who questions why his father died, but Dunk was left alive. Raymun reveals he has married the prostitute Rowan, alias Red. Maekar informs Dunk that Aerion will spend time in the Free Cities to atone. He laments that Baelor would have been a good king and invites Dunk to Summerhall, where Egg can be his squire; Dunk declines, which Egg overhears. In a flashback, Dunk asks Arlan why he was never knighted. Arlan retorts that a true knight always finishes a story. In the present, Daeron tells Dunk to mentor Egg to prevent him from becoming like Aerion. Egg discovers that his hair is regrowing. He takes a knife to Aerion’s bedroom, but Maekar calms him down. Dunk asks Maekar if Egg can squire for him on the road, but Maekar refuses. Raymun buys Sweetfoot back for Dunk, who then gifts her to Raymun. As Dunk leaves Ashford, Egg arrives, and they depart together. Egg suggests that they travel to Dorne. An angry Maekar later realizes that Egg is gone. Key themes explored: – Honor vs. ambition – The weight of legacy – The quiet tension of noble politics – The personal cost of knighthood – Nature vs. Nurture The episode leans more on moral consequence than explosive set pieces, reinforcing the show's identity as a smaller-scale, character-first entry in the Game of Thrones universe. Brian & Darryl Discuss: – Did the finale feel satisfying or intentionally restrained? – Was the pacing consistent with the season's slower, novelistic approach? – Standout performances – Production design and tonal consistency – How does this set up future seasons Rating out of 5 When the Laughing Storm Offers You War, You Say Yes Brian: 4.88/5 Darryl: 4.6/5 Season 1 Retrospective Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms carved out its own lane in Westeros by shrinking the scope and focusing on intimacy over spectacle. Season strengths: – Character chemistry between Dunk and Egg – Political nuance without overwhelming lore – Strong costume and set authenticity – A grounded tone closer to early Game of Thrones Rating out of 10, Wow, That Hedge Knight has a HUGE “Sword” Brian: 9.17/10 Darryl: 9.5/10 Question of the Week What would you do if you were invisible for a day? Simon and Mackelly egg him on.Chapter Review:With Queen Daenerys Targaryen still missing, Ser Barristan Selmy is informed by the seneschal Reznak mo Reznak that King Hizdahr zo Loraq no longer needs him by the new king's side. Selmy is fine with that. He's short of friends right now, with Daario and company still hostages of the Yunkai'i, but Missandei tells him that a masked Brazen Beast approached her to say that the Shavepate (Skahaz mo Kandaq) wants to meet with Selmy. He doesn't trust these masked men, but he agrees to the meeting.Barristan is convinced that Dany lives. She was riding Drogon like the Targaryens of old. But also like the dragons of old, the body count can get out of control. More than 200 burned to death at the fighting pit. He reminisces about his early life and bemoans that he is now engaging in the plots and schemes he hoped he'd left behind in King's Landing. He meets with Skahaz who wants rebellion. The Volantenes are coming to re-enslave everyone. The peace treaty is a sham. Worst of all, it was Hizdar's confectioner who poisoned the locusts that had incapacitated Belwas, but the target was the queen. Selmy wants proof and if he gets it, he'll help Skahaz with his plans. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Barristan Selmy - Former Lord Commander of the Kingsguard in King's Landing. Few episodes of television have ever balanced science fiction, romance, suspense, and raw emotional catharsis as perfectly as “The Constant.” In a season built on urgency and fractured timelines, this hour becomes something deeper: a love story disguised as a time-travel thriller. When Desmond Hume begins unsticking from time after leaving the Island by helicopter, his consciousness violently flashes between 1996 and 2004. The rules are murky, the stakes lethal. Guided by physicist Daniel Faraday, Desmond learns he needs a “constant” — a person anchored in both timelines — or his mind will burn out. That constant is Penny Widmore. What follows is the show's most unforgettable sequence: a cross-cut phone call that bends time but lands with devastating emotional clarity. When Penny answers the phone on Christmas Eve, eight years after Desmond last saw her, the sci-fi scaffolding falls away and we're left with something timeless — longing, regret, and love refusing to be erased by physics.“The Constant” is often called the best episode of Lost, and for good reason:It proves the show's mythology works best when grounded in human stakes. It rewards long-term investment in character arcs.It delivers one of television's most emotionally satisfying payoffs. It shows how genre storytelling can be intimate rather than bombastic. It's not just clever — it's moving. Not just ambitious — but precise. The kind of episode that reminds you why serialized television can feel transcendent. And that brings us to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — the quiet miracle none of us saw coming. After the divisive ending of Game of Thrones, many fans felt unmoored. The political grandeur and moral complexity that once defined Westeros seemed swallowed by spectacle. For some, the magic was gone. Then came Dunk and Egg.Set decades before the War of the Five Kings, the series trades apocalyptic stakes for something far more intimate: honor, loyalty, friendship. Ser Duncan the Tall isn't playing the game of thrones — he's trying to survive it with decency intact. And young Aegon V (Egg) brings a hopeful lens to a world we thought we understood.Like “The Constant,” A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms succeeds because it remembers what made its universe powerful in the first place: character over chaos. It slows down. It breathes. It lets moments land. Instead of chasing shock value, it rebuilds trust through sincerity.Where “The Constant” showed that Lost was never really about the Island but about connection, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reminds us that Westeros was never just about who sits the Iron Throne — it's about the people wandering the roads beneath it.Both stories strip away the noise. Both center emotional anchors. Both prove that spectacle means nothing without heart. And in doing so, they resurrect something precious: belief.Belief that television can still surprise us.Belief that long-form storytelling can still move us.Belief that love — whether across time or across kingdoms — is the only constant that matters.Be sure to keep coming back every week for more great content, only on the #talkintvpodcast
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms moest eigenlijk een film zijnDaarnaast bespreken we een opvallend detail rond A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: George R.R. Timestamps:00:00:00 Nerd Culture #24700:00:00 Huishoudelijke Mededeling00:02:22 Wat hebben we gekeken / gelezen / geluisterd00:02:43 Ted Lasso00:07:35 Train Dreams00:10:53 X-Men: Days of Future Past00:18:23 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms00:21:23 Stripboek00:24:30 Pressure Trailer00:27:00 Robert Duvall overleden (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now)00:29:14 Tom Cruise vs Brad Pitt deepfake video00:29:50 SAG-AFTRA vs ByteDance – Seedance 2.0 AI controverse00:38:40 Oproep aan Muppetmakers00:41:15 Warner Bros in gesprek met Paramount over overname00:45:00 Toy Story 5 Trailer00:47:47 Super Bowl Half-Time Show 199500:51:05 George R.R. Hey everyone! We've got a packed episode for you this week as we dive into two very different worlds of storytelling.First up, we're talking about Crime 101, a thriller that's been getting buzz for its fresh take on the crime genre. We'll break down the plot twists, discuss the performances, and debate whether it lives up to the hype. Then we're heading back to Westeros with HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This prequel series takes us about a century before the events of Game of Thrones, following the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg as they navigate the Seven Kingdoms during a more "peaceful" time (as peaceful as Westeros gets, anyway).
Matt Lewis journeys into the world behind the latest story from the Game of Thrones universe, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, to discover how it illustrates that medieval history is far more colourful and spectacular than you might think. After nerding out about the world created by George R.R. Martin with Dr. Eleanor Janega, Matt is joined by Dr Hugh Doherty, the show's historical advisor, who worked with its writers to build a believable world of knights, codes, and clashing swords, bringing authentic medieval life to Westeros. They discuss what the show gets right — and why it matters.MOREDragons: From Eden to Middle EarthListen on AppleListen on SpotifyTolkien: Middle Earth & the Middle AgesListen on AppleListen on SpotifyGone Medieval is presented by Matt Lewis. The Harrison Ford Show. Hov, vent, og Filmnyhederne er tilbage! Alt er godt. God weekend og rigtig god fornøjelse. Med venlig hilsen, Jannik & Casper
WE COOKIN' THIS WEEK! We kicked things off with the Toy Story 5 trailer — the gang is back, and this time Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the crew are facing modern tech threats like never before, thanks to a brand-new high-tech toy called Lilypad that threatens the core of playtime. Next up, we hit the Star Wars universe as we watched the The Mandalorian and Grogu teaser, which brings Din Djarin and Grogu's story back to the big screen with an expanded cast including colonel leader Sigourney Weaver and Hutt heir Jeremy Allen White, with plenty of classic galaxy-wide adventure vibes. Then adrenaline switched up hard with the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer — dragons in full-scale war, Greens vs. Blacks, massive battles, and Westeros in total chaos as the Targaryen civil war explodes onscreen. Finally, we took a hard turn into horror with The Mummy trailer — the latest reboot from director Lee Cronin is promising a fresh, evil-infested nightmare take on the classic monster tale. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms HBO and George R.R. Martin aren't done with us yet. We're heading back to Westeros to follow a new kind of story. Gone are the multi-generational tales of Kings, Queens, Empires and Dragons; this time we're focusing on a single Hedgeknight and the little boy who wants to be his squire. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts the first of the novellas that introduced these characters, and is a different direction for the whole Game of Thrones Behemoth. In this episode Dion is our Hedgeknight dujour, and Jill and Peta both show no interest at all of being his squire. Quinny is in a character entirely different book series. Synopsis A century before the events of "Game of Thrones," two unlikely heroes wander Westeros. In an adaption of George R. R. Martin's novella "The Hedge Knight," a young and naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, face a series of dangerous exploits. https://youtu.be/1qQtCQvvOpc As always, an chivalrous thank-you to all you Hedge-knights and hedge-days join in with the conversation on the Twitch stream, live each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEDT. The Geek Freaks Headlines crew reacts to the new House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer and keeps it spoiler-free while still digging into what the footage is clearly setting up. The big focus is on how fast the season hits the gas, with the Battle of the Gullet teased as an early centerpiece, plus the shifting trust lines between Rhaenyra, Alicent, Jace, and Aemond. The conversation also zooms out to the bigger theme of the Dance: when Targaryens fight, the realm pays the price, and Season 3 looks ready to show that cost in full.00:00 Trailer reaction, June release window, and a spoiler-free promise00:14 Battle of the Gullet teased as an early major episode00:27 Rhaenyra's shift into full “war mode” and the story turning grayer on both sides00:46 The realm suffering theme, and how the show frames “small people vs big dragons”01:06 Why Season 3 feels like the payoff for Season 2 and the setup for a final Season 401:19 Listener prompt: what you want to see in Season 3 (spoiler-free)The trailer suggests Season 3 picks up immediately after Season 2 and moves quickly into action. The Battle of the Gullet is being positioned as a huge escalation point early in the season. The trust question is front and center, especially around Alicent's intentions and Jace pushing caution.Rhaenyra's approach looks less careful this time, with more willingness to embrace the war outright. The story is leaning into moral gray area, where loyalties get harder as both sides push further. The visual language of dragons and war keeps highlighting collateral damage across the realm.“I'm gonna avoid spoilers, but I will say a lot of the action [is] going happen in the very first episode.”“It's the biggest battle in Game of Thrones.”“Do not trust Alicent.”“This season, we're going to see her fully fledged to the war.”“The realm is what suffers when the Targaryens fight each other.”If you enjoyed this breakdown, make sure you're subscribed to Geek Freaks Headlines. Sarah and Will start with personal watchlists and scheduling updates, then dive into how A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms turns a simple "trial by seven" into a meditation on luck, faith, and class, while still delivering grounded, brutal action. Why Wonder Man's back half leans hard into character work, meta-Hollywood satire, and emotional payoff, sticking the landing for Season 1.
