This week, Alex, Kate, and Joseph Bradford of MMORPG.com and beyond discuss why modern fantasy is quite bad. They talk about the vast difference betwen Tolkein and Martin, why classic fantasy is less "black and white" than it's accused of even though it's actually good that it is, and the hopefulness that's too lacking in modern fantasy.
Gustav Danielsson, FSF got the job by text message. "Do you wanna shoot a sequel to Game of Thrones?" arrived from director Owen Harris, who had made San Junipero with him, and it landed while Danielsson was at home rewatching the original series with his kids and buying them the board games. He cut short a show in Sweden to take it. The result, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is HBO's return to Westeros at a fraction of the usual scale, and it earned him a 2026 Emmy nomination for cinematography. He and host Jared Levy work through how you make a two-hander feel as large as a war on a budget that rules out burning cities. Night scenes pushed into the half hour of real dusk, the same trick he used on San Junipero because South African nights go completely black. An Alexa Mini LF shot at 3:2 and squeezed to 2:1 on Panavision Ultra Panatars, whose 1.3x squeeze fills almost the whole sensor, with faster Panavision VA spherical primes held back for the scenes a single double-wick candle had to carry on its own. Every flashback on one de-tuned Panavision T Series lens built for Super 35 and run on a larger sensor, so the image falls apart at the edges on purpose. Firelight from a bank of up to 48 photo flood bulbs that gaffer Seamus Lynch built and named the Dalek, programmed against video of a real fire. And the afternoon an oven on set caught fire for real, which Danielsson spent a few seconds trying to dim.CREDITSGustav Danielsson, FSFInstagram · Website · IMDbJared Levy, hostInstagram · Website · IMDbDavid Kruta, producerInstagram · Website · IMDbTopher Hammond, producerInstagramMUSICOriginal music by One Wave.THE SALONEpisode page and full gallery: https://cinematographysalon.com/podcast/gustav-danielsson-fsf-a-knight-of-the-seven-kingdomsNewsletter and events: cinematographysalon.comInstagram: @cinematographysalonPRESENTING SPONSORThis episode is made possible by Fujifilm — home of GFX ETERNA 55, the large format, IMAX®-Certified digital camera, and FUJINON cinema lenses. https://fujifilm-x.comSUPPORT THE SALONThe podcast, the writing, and both Resources tools are free. This week, Da7e and Neil have been pulled out of Westeros in a green bubble and asked whether they are afraid of a new Damon Lindelof show. The answer? Absolutely not.In The Calm [05:10], they break down the pilot episode of Lanterns and highlight its many influences, from True Detective vibes to Fargo vibes to a promise of cosmic shenanigans. They also check in on some familiar tropes like Bad Dads, Time-hopping Mysteries, and Mythology Deconstructions. Then in The Storm [48:04], your faithful hosts use their knowledge of the comics, the "Weeks Ahead" trailer, and lack of screener access to lay down some theories about where this story will go, including the very important questions around why the show is specifically and simply called "Lanterns" (with no color-based qualifier).Next week, the Lanterns journey continues with episode two of eight. Will there be aliens? Probably. But more importantly, there will be more Garrett Dillahunt. To interact with the show, send your comments and questions to stormofspoilers@gmail.com, and follow us on Twitter/X and Bluesky @Da7eandNeil.You can also support Da7e and Neil and get all kinds of bonus content (from the Game of Thrones era to the LOST rewatch to our Twin Peaks rewatch project to our current Adventure Pod and Dark watch project) by subscribing to our Patreon here: patreon.com/Da7eandNeil

Spoilers, profanity, Jaime x Brienne. Theon struggles with his captivity, phantom "limb" syndrome, and a lot of TMI. What's Barbrey Dustin really up to? Dree Taylor is back, and apparently all we needed was a cocktail and a microphone to cover every possible topic known to womanhood. We start with a truly unhinged edition of Weird Sex featuring jewelry made out of semen (yes, you read that correctly), then head to Westeros to discuss dragons, questionable family trees and why Kiki still needs somebody willing to cut a head off on her behalf. From there, we get into the Housewives friendship fallout, men with multiple wives, childhood crimes involving acorn pies, and whether there should be a statute of limitations on airing your ex out online.Somehow, we also end up planning Kiki's funeral—complete with a hologram, a snatched casket body, possible haunting privileges and a plan to turn her ashes into a diamond. Because obviously. Then we get a little serious about friendship when a listener asks what to do when she realizes she may be the only thing keeping her friend group alive. Is it time for an honest conversation…or time to let that group chat die in peace? Plus: moving woes, air-mattress celibacy, and a little Bali temptation for anybody who wants to join the girls' trip. Pour something strong.**Cheers to the girls' weekend!**

House of the Dragon Season 3 has come to an end! After an uneven second season, did Season 3 bring the Dance of the Dragons back to its former glory? In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we give our full spoiler-filled House of the Dragon Season 3 review, breaking down the second half of the season, the epic finale, Battle of Tumbleton, Rhaenyra's transformation, Sheepstealer, Rhaena, Ormund Hightower, and our biggest theories for House of the Dragon Season 4. But first, we've got a 20-minute cold open! COLD OPEN: FIRST 20 MINUTES We begin with a debate about comic book movie adaptations and how closely movies should follow their source material. Why can Spider-Man: Brand New Day drastically differ from its comic book namesake without receiving much criticism, while Supergirl was heavily criticized for changing elements of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? Is faithfulness to the source material actually important, or does it depend on expectations? Nobody necessarily expected Spider-Man: Brand New Day to directly adapt the comics, while Supergirl was marketed as an adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow. We discuss whether expectations, rather than comic book accuracy itself, are what ultimately shape fan reactions. ICE CREAM MAN MOVIE We then discuss Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man horror movie... and we're already worried without even seeing it. We're big fans of the Ice Cream Man comics and praise their creativity, disturbing horror, mystery, thought-provoking storytelling, and incredibly unique premise. Unfortunately, we think the movie appears to be stripping away much of what makes the comic special in favor of something far more generic. We discuss why the adaptation feels disconnected from its source material and why we're skeptical of Eli Roth's approach. HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 3 After the cold open, we return to Westeros for our full discussion of House of the Dragon Season 3 Episodes 5-8. We previously reviewed Episodes 1-4, and now it's time to determine whether Season 3 stuck the landing. FULL HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SPOILERS! We discuss: • The Battle of Tumbleton and the finale's incredible action • Rhaenyra's increasingly dark transformation • Rhaena and Sheepstealer • Ormund Hightower emerging as a wonderfully conniving villain • The Dance of the Dragons • The season's biggest twists and surprises • Character motivations and development • The uneven pacing • Underdeveloped supporting characters • Our favorite and least favorite moments • Where the story goes in Season 4 • Who survives the coming war The action throughout Season 3 is spectacular, and the Battle of Tumbleton gives us some of the epic dragon warfare we've been waiting to see. We also loved watching Rhaenyra's heel turn continue as the war changes her, while characters such as Ormund Hightower brought some much-needed personality and scheming to the conflict. But we have one MAJOR problem with the series: Who are we supposed to root for? We love morally complex characters. Game of Thrones built its reputation on complicated, flawed people. But morally gray doesn't have to mean emotionally distant. At this point, we're struggling to find a main character we genuinely want to rally behind. The spectacle is incredible, but without characters we're emotionally invested in, some of the biggest moments don't hit as hard as they should. Despite those criticisms, we still enjoyed House of the Dragon Season 3 and believe it's an improvement over Season 2. Now we're looking ahead and hoping the series can bring the Dance of the Dragons to a satisfying conclusion. JOIN THE DISCUSSION Did you enjoy House of the Dragon Season 3? Was the Battle of Tumbleton worth the wait? What do you think of Rhaenyra's transformation? And most importantly: Who are YOU rooting for? Let us know in the comments! In this thrilling season finale of House of the Dragon, Sarah and Will dissect the intense events of Season 3, Episode 8, titled "The Treasons of Tumbleton." They explore the dramatic transformation of Rhaenyra as she grapples with the weight of her lineage and the brutal choices she must make to claim her throne. The episode dives into her complex relationship with Daemon, showcasing the Targaryen belief in their divine right to rule and how this ideology shapes their actions. The duo also examines the chilling dynamics within the Hightower family, particularly the treatment of Daeron and how Ormund's manipulations impact the unfolding conflict. They discuss the moral ambiguities of leadership in a time of civil war, questioning whether Rhaenyra's descent into cruelty is a necessary evil or a tragic flaw. Listeners can expect a deep dive into the episode's standout moments, including the visceral siege of Tumbleton, the complex interplay of power among the Targaryens, and the poignant sacrifices made by characters like Helena. The third season of the fantasy drama television series House of the Dragon premiered on HBO on June 21, 2026, in the United States, and will consist of eight episodes. The season covers the events of the book Fire & Blood, a prequel novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. The season follows in the aftermath of the second season's final episodes, in which the war known as the "Dance of Dragons" between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen continues, causing House Targaryen to become further divided. Aegon is supported by the Green Council and his mother Alicent Hightower, while Rhaenyra is supported by the Black Council and her husband and uncle Daemon Targaryen, both sides seeking allies from the great houses of Westeros and fighting for the support of their armies to claim their rightful positions to the Iron Throne.Hosted on Ausha. David and Jean dig into listener feedback on "A Dragon in Winter," with a community that had plenty to say. The conversation opens with a lively debate on where Cole's death ranks among the great villain exits in the Westeros universe, with Jean making the case that his particular brand of self-deluding villainy makes it more satisfying than either Joffrey or Ramsay. Ormond gets a thorough going over as listeners weigh in on his manipulation of Ulf and his willingness to set aside his stated principles the moment a dragon becomes available to him. The Harrenhal dream sequences spark a broader discussion about whether the castle itself is selective about who it reaches and whether Targaryens are uniquely susceptible to whatever is in the air there. Military Corner returns with a deep dive into the just war doctrine and the historical precedents for how rules of warfare get invoked, ignored, and exploited.Contact UsQuestions or comments? House of the Dragon is back... and after a divisive second season, Season 3 is finally bringing the fire! In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we break down the first four episodes of House of the Dragon Season 3, discussing the biggest battles, character arcs, political intrigue, dragon action, pacing, theories, and everything that has us excited for the rest of the season. While we had plenty of criticisms of Season 2, these opening episodes feel like a major step in the right direction. The story is moving, the battles are spectacular, and the Dance of the Dragons finally feels like it's building toward the epic conclusion we've been waiting for. FULL SPOILER DISCUSSION This episode contains full spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episodes 1-4. In This Episode We Discuss: Our full House of the Dragon Season 3 review Why Season 3 feels much stronger than Season 2 The incredible pacing of the opening episodes Massive battle sequences and dragon action The political maneuvering between rival factions Character motivations and shifting alliances Which characters impressed us the most Why some of the cast feels less complex than previous seasons Our favorite scenes and biggest surprises The strongest action set pieces so far What still isn't working Predictions and theories for the rest of Season 3 Who we think survives... and who probably won't One of our biggest takeaways is that House of the Dragon has recaptured much of the excitement that made us fall in love with this world. The first two episodes feature phenomenal pacing, outstanding action, and some of the biggest moments we've seen since the series began. That said, we don't think everything is perfect. While the spectacle has reached new heights, some of the characters don't feel quite as layered or emotionally compelling as they did in previous seasons. They're far from one-dimensional, but many of the personal conflicts and relationships haven't resonated with us as strongly as they once did. Even with those criticisms, we're having a fantastic time watching this season unfold. These first four episodes have us genuinely excited to see how the Dance of the Dragons reaches its conclusion, and we can't wait to see where the remaining episodes take Rhaenyra, Alicent, Daemon, Aegon, Aemond, Corlys, and the rest of Westeros. Whether you're a longtime Game of Thrones fan, a reader of Fire & Blood, or simply following HBO's biggest fantasy series, this episode is packed with in-depth analysis, theories, predictions, and spoiler-filled discussion. Episode 6 of Season 3 of House of the Dragon focused on key developments for the major players in the series. The latest episode brings us deeper into the chaos brewing in Westeros, especially for Queen Rhaenyra. With shifting alliances and unfolding plots, there's much to unpack in another banger of an episode. Rhaenyra's grip on King's Landing is becoming increasingly tenuous, and Daemon marches to the beat of his own drum. Meanwhile, a strengthening Aemond finds a strange ally, and perhaps something more, in Alys. In Tumbleton, Ormund and Daeron are joined by a familiar face, just in the nick of time. At the 3/4 mark of the season, Dave and PC Tunney let you know how they feel about things and where they see things going in the final two episodes.Chairshot Radio NetworkLaunched in 2017, the Chairshot Radio Network presents you with the best in sports, entertainment, and sports entertainment.
