Long regarded as one of the world's premier musicians, David Sancious is pleased to announce the release of tracks from his upcoming album, “The Ghost of Jim Crow.” The full version of the first track, "Why Must It Be So,” is now available. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee David Sancious has recorded and performed on keyboards and guitar and toured with various Grammy Award-winning artists. David is an original member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Peter Gabriel, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Santana, Natalie Merchant, Yousou Ndour, Erika Badu, Aretha Franklin, Seal and others have used David's talents as pianists, synthesists, guitarists, arrangers, and producers on recording sessions and concert tours, playing an eclectic and diverse range of music. After several years of playing keyboards and guitar in Jazz, R&B, and Rock Bands in the Jersey Shore area, David met Bruce Springsteen at the entrance to a club where Bruce was organizing a jam session. This led to an invitation to join a new band that Bruce was putting together. This eventually became Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (named after the street David lived on). After recording three albums and touring the country with Bruce, David left to form the group Tone and recorded several albums. In May, he will tour with Will Calhoun, the drummer for Living Colour, on the Open Secret project throughout the Northeast US.   Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 2: Multi-instrumentalist, producer and record label owner Evan Taylor. He served as bandleader of the Bernie Worrell Orchestra and produced the P-Funk keyboard wizard's posthumous 2024 album, Bernie Worrell: Wave From the WOOniverse. The collection features collaborations with Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Norwood Fisher, Buckethead, Leo Nocentelli, Stanton Moore, Will Calhoun, Fred Schneider, Sean Lennon and Jerry Harrison, among others.  Taylor also runs Loantaka Records out of Glendale, N.Y., as well as the Loantaka Sound studio in downtown L.A. RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. His friend and colleague Evan Taylor talks about the posthumous album he produced called Wave From The WOOniverse. It contains 12 previously unfinished Bernie Worrell compositions and 1 unreleased Funkadelic song. It's been a two year labor of love for Evan and Bernie's widow, Judie. And the amount of guests on this double album is staggering. There's Will Calhoun from Living Colour, Mike Watt, Norwood Fisher from Fishbone, Marc Ribot, Fred Schneider, Sean Ono Lennon, Bootsy Collins, and a lot more.  Evan tells me how he met and began working with Bernie, initially, and how they hung out at Evan's parent's house in New Jersey. What the Riff?!?

What the Riff?!?

Vivid is the debut album from Living Colour, and it was a commercial and critical success, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard 200 album charts.  Vernon Reid formed Living Color in New York in 1984.  Reid is from England and used the British spelling of the band.  It was known as "Vernon Reid's Living Colour" for the first couple of years, and evolved through a number of band members and genres including jazz, punk, experimental rock, and funk. The lineup for the debut album was set by 1986, and consisted of Reid on guitars, Corey Clover on vocals, Muzz Skillings on bass, and Will Calhoun on drums.  The group settled on a hard rock to heavy metal approach to their music, though elements of funk and jazz remain.  They built their experience playing in New York's CBGB club where they built up a following, eventually including Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger.  Living Colour is an all black band playing hard rock music, which is uncommon.  Vernon Reid pushed for acceptance of black musicians in alternative music genres, forming the Black Rock Coalition in 1985 to support development and exposure.  During a time when highly produced hair metal bands were common, Living Colour was refreshingly different.  The band entered the studios in December 2022 to record their seventh album.Bruce brings this group and their debut album to the podcast. Funny VibeThis track was performed in their earlier days and was reworked for the album with a harder rock sound.  It features Chuck D and Flava Flav from Public Enemy.  It is about racial stereotyping - something Vernon Reid had to deal with in the music industry when he's bringing an all-black group onto the rock scene.Cult of PersonalityThis is the song which really launched Living Colour into a worldwide phenomenon.  It hit number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Reid said it was essentially written in just one rehearsal session, and is the only song on the album written by all the band members.  The title comes from a report Nikita Khrushchev wrote in 1956 on Stalin called "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences."Open Letter (to a Landlord)A poet named Tracie Morris was part of the Black Rock Coalition, and Reid got her help on the lyrics for this song.  It is inspired by concern over the gentrification of the East Village in New York City, pushing out long term tenants and replacing them with "yuppies." Glamour BoysThe third single from the album is about men obsessed with high society.  Mick Jagger is on backing vocals.  Jagger came to know the band through working with bassist Doug Wimbush who would replace Skillings as bassist in 1992 in the band.  Jagger produced a couple of their demos. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Hippy Hippy Shake by the Georgia Satellites (from the motion picture "Cocktail")This cover appeared on the soundtrack to a movie featuring Tom Cruise flipping bottles of rum as a showman bartender in exotic Caribbean locales. STAFF PICKS:Tutti Frutti by Little RichardWayne does a little double dipping on the Entertainment track.  Little Richard's hit made its way back on the charts when it appeared on the "Cocktail" motion picture soundtrack.  The line "aw rooty" was a slang expression for "all right!"  Many rock and roll staples would be introduced in this song, including the loud volume, powerful vocal style, and distinctive rhythm.Nothin' But a Good Time  by PoisonAccording to Poison drummer Rikki Rockett, John's staff pick was written during a time the band was living in a downtown LA warehouse with no money, and getting fast food and going to the beach was a good time.  The song was written for the everyday person making it through the work week and just looking for a good time at the end of it all.Peek-a-Boo by Siouxsie & the Banshees Rob brings us a post-punk group with their breakthrough U.S. hit.  Featuring a looping brass part played in reverse and unusual instruments like the accordion, Vocalist Siouxsie Sioux added to the unusual nature of the song by using a different microphone for each line.  Peek-a-boo would reach number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100.Fast Car by Tracy ChapmanBruce's staff pick was originally released in April, but Chapman really moved up the charts after appearing at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday tribute concert.  Stevie Wonder was supposed to be the surprise guest star, but when his keyboard hard disk went missing, Tracy Chapman was ushered back on stage in prime time with just a microphone and a guitar.  The song she performed was a sad, stark tale of a woman trapped in poverty, reminiscing about a time when she felt she could be someone. NOVELTY TRACK:Parents Just Don't Understand by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh PrinceBefore becoming a film icon and celebrity, Will Smith got his start as the Fresh Prince.  This comedy rap did well on the charts in 1988.

Considered a pioneer in Hip-Hop bass playing and in the use of bass effects, alternate tunings and extended hand techniques, Doug's mastery of the bass is unparalled. As one of the most versatile session and touring bassists in the industry, Doug moves readily from pop and mainstream rock to hip-hop, funk, metal, symphonic metal, reggae, R&B, electronic, world and experimental music. Doug Wimbish is probably best known as the cutting edge lead bassist in the Grammy Award-winning hard rock band Living Colour, but looking beyond the obvious, one quickly sees that Doug's influence and impact on the world's musical culture is much more vast and significant than often written or realized.  Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's “The Message”, listed by Rollingstone.com as the #1 Greatest Hip Hop Song of all time, featured Doug's bass lines as do many other Sugarhill Records classics including “Apache”, “8th Wonder” and “White Lines”. Wimbish wrote the bass line on The Sequence's “Funk You Up”. To get an idea of the respect Doug has earned within the music industry, consider that in one week in 1991, Doug received personal phone calls from Living Colour, Bruce Springsteen and Seal, all asking him to work with them. Doug made the decision to work with Living Colour and joined the band, becoming its permanent bassist. He actively records and tours today with his band mates Vernon Reid, Corey Glover and Will Calhoun. The group's latest album, “Shade”, was released in September of 2017. In addition to his work with Living Colour, Doug's highly regarded career spanning all musical genres has also included recording, producing and touring with many world renowned artists including The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Herb Albert, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Carly Simon, Seal, Al Green, Billy Idol, George Clinton, Depeche Mode, Talib Kweli, Kanye West, James Brown, Mos Def, Tarja Turunen, Ronnie Wood, Freddie Jackson, Michael Bolton, Schiller, Cheb Khaled, Hari Haran and Peter Wolf, to name a few. From his early days as one of Hip-Hop's earliest architects in the Original Sugarhill Records Rhythm Section, to his long-time membership in Living Colour, TackHead, Little Axe, Jungle Funk, HeadFake, and then on to more recent collaborations including DMD the Vibes with Daru Jones & Marcus Machado, Doug continues to prove himself as one of the world's finest, versatile and most sought after bass guitarists.   Special Mentions: Doug Wimbish Official Site, Hell on Wheels: A Tour Stories Compilation, Becky Pell - Yoga Journey: A Contemporary Guide to a Timeless Tradition, Claire Murphy - Girl on the Road: How to Break into Touring from a Female Perspective, Steve Walsh Gofund Me, Roadie Free Radio Merch, RFR Podcast Bundle, Follow Your Drishti Yoga Podcast, roadiecare.com, musicares.org, Roswell Pro Audio Mini K87, Soundgirls.org

As an actor, he played Francis in the 1986 war movie Platoon. Glover was born in Brooklyn, New York City. It eventually went platinum in April 1989 and again five years later.[5] The album's single "Cult of Personality" won the 1989 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and the band was named “Best New Artist” at the MTV Video Music Awards. Living Colour released two more albums (Time's Up and Stain) before splitting up in 1995. He took the place of singer Carl Anderson who had played Judas since 1971 alongside Neeley and was set to reprise the role, but had died of leukemia in 2004. The tour ran through 2010. Glover told Neeley that when he was a child, seeing the movie version of the show was what made him decide to be an entertainer. Myrony is slightly different because it's synchronicity in motion since it's up to us to pay attention to the coincidences or signs but also “listen” to the intuitive pull we all get which Alysha believe is our greatest superpower! Her life was fairly normal until she got into a car accident that triggered fibromyalgia at the age of 18 and had to deal with that very painful chronic condition along with many other life challenges including loss of both parents, marriage, divorce, suicide thoughts/attempt, alcohol/prescription drug abuse/addiction and a full hysterectomy by the time she was 35. Alysha's strong spiritual connection and tenacity is what helped her through some very dark days. However, it's actually thanks to those days that allowed her to connect to her superpower that she calls her “Spiritual Spidey Sense”. He was a highlight as host and performer at the Pacific Rim Drum Invitational (the first drum event to be simulcast live on the Internet), and he's a primary attraction at star-studded drumming events such as the LaRioja Drumming Festival, Koblenz International Drummer Meeting in Germany, the Florida Drum Expo, the Paris Music Show, the massive Ultimate Drummers Day in Australia, the Heartbeat World Rhythm spectacle for Canadian TV, and the Montreal Drumfest.Dom doesn't rely on major band affiliations as a claim to fame, but performances with the Buddy Rich Big Band, B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), T Lavitz (The Dixie Dregs), and the Louie Bellson Big Band reveal the pedigree of his playing. He has shared the stage with Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Phillips, Billy Cobham, Bernard Purdie, Rod Morgenstein, Chester Thompon, Terry Bozzio, Will Calhoun, Deen Castronovo, Russ McKinnon, Chad Smith, Mark Schulman, Denny Carmassi, Liberty DeVitto and Jim Chapin in worldwide drumming events. In addition to large drumming expos and clinic tours, Dom is an active educator at colleges, drum schools and camps. He has performed at the Percussive Arts Society Convention (PASIC), Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in Hollywood California, Drummers Collective in NY, KOSA Camp in Vermont USA, North Texas State University, the Graham Cole Percussion Camp in England, and Drummers Camp in the Black Forest of Germany and many others. In addition, he is an in-demand consultant to major music corporations, and serves as Education consultant for Sabian Cymbals, Vater Drum Sticks, Mapex Drums, Remo Drumheads, SE Microphones, and Wizdom Media for whom he oversees programs worldwide.Michael Leasure has held the drum chair in Walter Trout's band since 2008.Mike Leasure was born in Alhambra, California in 1968. He is the youngest of six children. He found his life's calling at the ripe old age of six while sitting in his mother's kitchen. His mother was doing the dishes while listening to the radio. At one point a Benny Goodman tune came on and the young boy, captivated by the drumming of Gene Krupa, picked up some pots and pans and began flailing away in accompaniment."Leasure made his debut as drummer for The Edgar Winter Band in March 2005. "I was nervous and the sound check didn't go all that well. But once we all walked out on stage, everything just kind of fell into place." Leasure played 50 shows with Winter in 2005 & 2006. Michael has worked with Guitar Phenom Philip Sayce for the past six years and is currently touring the world this summer with Blues/Rock legend, Walter Trout.

A native of Brooklyn, He has been called "the greatest bassist in the world" by Time Out New York magazine and was last year's winner of JazzTimes Magazine's Critics Poll in the Electric Bass category. Melvin's wide-ranging musical resume includes membership in bands ranging from the no-wave of Defunkt to the avant-jazz of the Decoding Society, to Power Tools with Bill Frisell & Ronald Shannon Jackson, Rollins Band (where he was nominated for a Grammy), Socialybrium with Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Bernie Worrell, and the Zig Zag Power Trio with Vernon Reid and Will Calhoun of the band Living Colour. As a bassist and producer, he has worked with Femi Kuti, Caetano Veloso, dead prez,  David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and Sonny Sharrock. Billy Cobham's existence is one of the few reasons I play drums at the level I do. His surprise appearance in my life, at a key juncture in 1977, was an indirect influence on me, and gave my parents the go ahead to invest in their young, ambitious son. Billy Cobham Discusses The Importance Of Teamwork Within Music

“Just lay it down. And if that happens, you work until you get sick of playing.”   Try Drumeo Edge for free for 7 days   Billy Cobham is a name that echoes throughout the history of drumming. Known for his power, finesse, dynamics, speed, musicality, metric modulation, and well just about every attribute that we drummers admire, it is impossible not to recognize the impact Billy had on music. Whether it was his work on several of Miles Davis’ records including Bitches Brew, Mahavishnu Orchestra’s early recordings, several Stanley Clarke records, Billy always brought a certain energy and sound that could be identified rather quickly. While he worked on many important early fusion recordings and beyond, he also led bands that produced important works, in particular the 1973 record Spectrum.   Billy has also been quite involved with drum education as well. In fact, he was performing educational drum clinics back in the early ’80s. He has also hosted drum retreats and masterclasses as well. Currently, he is hosting a masterclass series titled, “Billy Cobham’s Guide To Stress-Free Drumming” which consists of ten classes that are three hours in length. He is joined with his co-host Dom Famularo each month and there are two classes each where special guests Dennis Chambers, Will Calhoun, and Gary Husband offer their expertise.   Click here to sign up for Billy Cobham’s Guide To Stress Free Drumming   You Will Hear About….   Knowing what you are playing to maximize your sound. How to deploy rudiments musically. The problems with alpha dominant musicians and how to deal with them. Are musical choices like opinions? Making the band comfortable and creating great feeling music. Billy’s out-of-body experiences with Horace Silver and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Do artistic compromises create a long-lasting negative impact on musicians?   Why Should You Listen?   Billy and I really dove headfirst into a dialogue about how musicians can better serve a band. This isn’t about how we become better drummers through exercises and practice. This is about taking what you know and utilizing it tastefully to create great music. Forget the thrills of speed and complex patterns, while they have their place once we have a firm grasp on their musical qualities, just laying it down and making our bandmates comfortable is critically important if we want to become great musicians. This is a beneficial message to any musician.   Music Featured In Today’s Show   George Duke and Billy Cobham Band - Hip Pockets: 1:40 Billy Cobham - Red Baron: 8:40 & 9:52 Billy Cobham - Life & Times: 18:15 Billy Cobham - Stratus (Intro): 18:42 Billy Cobham’s Glass Managerie: AC DC 24:27 Billy Cobham - Stratus: 29:54 Billy Cobham - Le Lis: 43:15     Billy’s Socials   Instagram Facebook Website   Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’   Instagram Facebook YouTube

Scot and Jeff discuss Living Colour with Steve Singiser. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Steve Singiser. Steve is a contributing editor at Daily Kos Elections. Find him on Twitter at @stevesingiser. Steve's Music Pick: Living Colour That riff is indelibly inked on your brain. You know the one. The first musical notes put to vinyl/tape/compact disc by Living Colour, kicking off “Cult of Personality.” That riff that comes just after a quote from Malcolm X and carries through to famous orations from JFK and FDR. Yes, from the start, this all-black rock/funk/soul/metal band from New York really was something different.  The band was driven by the guitar heroics of Vernon Reid, who would put his signature all over various tracks through the band's existence. Lead vocalist Corey Glover featured rare range and power, and the rhythm section of drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Muzz Skillings (later replaced by Doug Wimbish) held down the bottom end. VIVID, the debut album, sold more than two million copies, presenting a foursome with solid melodies, street-smart lyrics, and an incredible intensity. Mick Jagger was such a fan he produced two songs on the record and invited the band to open for the Rolling Stones. The follow-up album, TIME'S UP, didn't miss a beat, featuring guests such as Little Richard, Queen Latifah, Doug E. Fresh, and others. The songs were just as satisfying, and lyrically the band dove deeper into the political, including social commentary on racism in America. The subsequent offering STAIN, features a darker, grittier sound. The band would split soon after.  Three post-reunion albums of varying quality are covered on the show, but more importantly, we offer an appreciation for a band that has somewhat slipped through the cracks but deserves a second, or for some, a first look. What's your favorite color?

"The musical climate at that time was fantastic," recalled Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun of the era that gave birth to the bands debut album 'Vivid'. "Rock and roll bands were back because in the 80's they varied with kind of hairspray bands to grunge and heavy metal and funk rock and acid rock, and there was a lot of venues in New York that catered themselves to that style of music. Radio was still an open rock and roll format and I would have to say that as an industry rock was at its height so we fit right in."Ahead of Living Colour's Vivid Australia tour, Will discusses that album in greater detail, goes behind the scenes of their breakthrough hit 'Cult of Personality', reveals just how close thier other massive hit 'Love Rears' came to being discarded before the recording stage, the bands decision to step things up on every level with 'Time's Up', their Grammy wins and a funny associated story, the heavier approach on 'Staind', why Living Colour are recognised as one of the worlds best live bands and more.

This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of October 27, 2010 with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary. This week's show commentary focused on the firing of journalist Juan Williams from NPR & it's meaning (if anything), new release of Iraq & Afghanistan war documents by Wikileaks & it's meaning, passing of Harlem Hip-Hop mainstay Huddy 6, reggae music legend Gregory Isaacs, some weird news in the world of elections here in the United States and some other things here and there. We had a great extended FuseBox Radio/BlackRadioIsBack.com interview we had this week with drummer, songwriter and producer Will Calhoun (of the classic Rock Band Living Colour). Some of the things we talked about included his background in the Bronx, his various musical influences, how labels have split up the music scene way too much (including the terms "Black Rock", "Black Music" etc.), his current and future music projects both on the solo tip & with Living Colour, some rather bugged out occurrences he had in the music industry, the importance of cultural ties in the creation of music and a lot of other cool things! Check out more of what's going on with him at his official website, http://www.WillCalhoun.com. We have brand new Black Agenda Report and Direct EFX segments on this week's show.
