UK PRIME MINISTER CONFIRMS INTENTION TO ENABLE FULL-CAPACITY EVENTS FROM JULY 19 Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that full-capacity events will be able to take place in England beginning July 19. On that day, a 150th anniversary concert at London's Royal Albert Hall will be one of the first full-house events. The prime minister stated that a final decision will be taken on July 12, and that limitations will be lifted one week later, as scheduled. He stated that the action follows data indicating the considerably lower Covid-19 mortality rates as a result of vaccine roll-out, with the UK having the highest per - capita immunization rate in Europe.  We'll talk more about this in the Music News Power Hour live on Clubhouse and on MusicIndustryCity.com at 12 p.m. Eastern. New California Budget Includes $150M for Independent Music Venues Under the new budget provisions, around 660 venues and promoters may be eligible for financial relief. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the state's 2021-2022 budget, which includes $150 million for independent venues and promoters, into law on June 28. Venues must have a defined performance space, mixing equipment, a PA system, and a lighting rig to be eligible. A venue must have at least two people who work as sound engineers, bookers, promoters, stage managers, ticket office managers, and/or security staff. And in music tech news… Riot Games Launches Royalty-Free Album For Streamers Riot Games, creators of League of Legends, published an album filled with lo-fi sounds on Friday, allowing gamers to stream their games while listening to music that does not infringe on copyright regulations. Sessions:Vi is a collection of 37 ambient songs created in collaboration with artists such as Chromonicci and Junior State. It is available on major streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. The album's release is in reaction to growing dissatisfaction among gamers who wish to broadcast their gameplay but can be kicked off platforms like Twitch for copyright infringement if the games contain copyrighted material. That concludes today's update. For article links, see the show notes, or go to MusicIndustryCity.com and listen to the Music News Power Hour live in Clubhouse or on the website at 12 p.m. Eastern. Cynthia Rothrock - the undisputed 'Queen of martial arts movies' - never anticipated a career as an action film star. The Scranton-raised martial artist initially headed west in search of furthering her kung fu knowledge, often competing in men's divisions to become a national champion, and touring the world in the process. It was a portentous audition for the Hong Kong action director Corey Yuen which would bring her fame and fortune; an audition which would catch the attention of Sammo Hung, who cast Cynthia in her first breakout film, 'Police Assassins' (1985), alongside another relative newcomer, Michelle Yeoh - and the rest, as they say, is history. Although, not quite, because Cynthia's journey in the film business has been full of highs and lows; huge successes, and false starts. Her three years in Hong Kong would produce undoubtedly her best on-screen fight work - a westerner who became the headline act in a new sub-genre of high-energy, stunt-filled fight films predominantly led by women - before success in the English-language Hong Kong-produced 'China O'Brien' films would see her travel back to the USA and into the highly lucrative world of straight-to-video actioners. She is, quite simply, a trailblazer - a performer who became a bankable star in both the east and the west at a time when the industry, and the martial arts genre in particular, was dominated by men. As a forerunner to Hollywood's pursuit in achieving greater gender parity in the action film world, Cynthia's legacy cannot be underestimated. Even now, aged 64, she shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to train, travel the world, appear in movies and teach martial arts. The multi-talented performer has just made BAFTA history, after taking top honours for ‘I May Destroy You', her drama about sexual consent. The TV show – which she created, wrote, directed and starred in - also won best mini-series. It was inspired by Michaela Coel's own experience of sexual assault after her drink was spiked. Born in London to Ghanaian parents, 33 year-old Michaela Coel grew up with her single mum and older sister on a council estate in London's East End. At eighteen, she became a Christian. Her conversion kick-started her writing career as she began penning and performing poems praising Jesus. After winning a scholarship to the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, her graduation piece - unusually- featured her own work, a play called ‘Chewing Gum Dreams'. It was about life on her estate and a girl desperate to lose her virginity. She later developed that into the award-winning Channel 4 comedy, Chewing Gum. Now Michaela Coel has been dubbed 'Queen of British TV' after her latest BAFTA success for her drama, 'I May Destroy You'. Mark Coles tells the story of her life, by talking to those who spotted her talents from a very young age, including friends from school, the church and the world of theatre. When Vivian Howe, author of 13 novels and mother of three grown-up children, is killed in a hit-and-run incident while jogging near her home, she ascends to the Beyond. Because her death was unfair, she is allowed to watch what happens below with her children, her best friend, her ex-husband and a rival novelist whose book is coming out the same day as Vivi's. Vivi is also given the use of three 'nudges' so that she can influence the outcome of events in the world of the living. As Vivi discovers her children's secrets, watches the investigation into her own death and worries about a secret from her youth coming to light, she must decide what she wants to manipulate - and what should be left well alone. Combining Elin Hilderbrand's trademark beach scenes, mouth-watering meals and picture-perfect homes with the heartfelt message that the people we lose never really leave us, Golden Girl is a beach book unlike any other from 'Queen of the Summer Novel' (People).

Pam Kravetz is fun, effervescent, vivacious. Take your pick of how to describe the Cincinnati artist and suburban high school art teacher. They all fit. She's so fun, in fact, that her family and friends held a parade in Over-the-Rhine for her 60th birthday last weekend. A few hundred people, including a who's who from the local arts and entertainment scene, converged on Washington Park wearing colorful outfits and hats to honor a woman who regularly wears go-go boots, tutus and sequins. How did Kravetz go from an artsy outcast as a kid to being the life of the party and influencer on the local arts and entertainment scene? The Cincinnati native told her story on The Enquirer's "That's So Cincinnati" podcast this week. "When I was little, I was that kid who never fit in," Kravetz said. "Even in kindergarten – this was the '60s – I got sent to the principal's office for wearing go-go boots and a mini-skirt." Kravetz credits her elementary and high school teachers for encouraging her to embrace her passion for art. It ended up inspiring her to pursue her own career as an art teacher. She is retiring this week as Harrison High School's art teacher after a 30-year career.  Her experiences at the University of Cincinnati helped Kravetz to begin to accept that being different is OK. Said Kravetz: "I was an art kid, so we wore all black. We were kind of angsty and cool. And then I was a sorority girl. I was also the Bearcat mascot. I was all of these weird parts of a human that didn't quite fit together. But all of that speaks to the person I've become because now I'm super comfortable talking in front of people and being the center of attention."Kravetz's life has continued to be full of unique opportunities. The Enquirer once featured her and her art work, and that led to her getting a date with the man who's now her husband. Her friends nicknamed her the "Queen of Love" for how she met her husband, Craig Davis.  In addition to being heavily involved in the arts scene, Kravetz has also been on a synchronized swimming team for several years at Ziegler Park in Over-the-Rhine. Her advice for those who might be struggling to embrace their passion, talent and personality. "Loving yourself is huge," Kravetz said.

Her poetry and forceful personality continues to shock and delight audiences around the world and she also had a hand in one of Eamon's most treasured singles 'Death Valley 69' with Sonic Youth. It is safe to say this is one of our favourite ever interviews, Lydia nails the brief and and shocks and surprises with almost every sentence. Three years ago, Julie McGuire, a High School English teacher in the South Bronx, came home from work eager to set off on another weekend in the Catskills, only to find her wife waiting to declare the end of their marriage. The sudden announcement threw Julie into a deep depression fueled by days full of self-loathing and nights full of NyQuil; she admits that she lost the will to live.Julie slowly regained her mojo by throwing herself into her love of backcountry skiing - hiking uphill, away from the resorts of the Catskill Mountains, and skiing her own routes back down. To better plan her winter Catskills descents off the beaten paths, she took to hiking the mountains out of ski season, and after completing the region's 35 peaks above 3500ft, plus the four mandated additional hikes in winter, she recently became – by pure coincidence – the 3500th member of the Catskill 3500 Club. She now routinely wears a ‘Queen of the Catskills’ t-shirt and posts colorful pictorial essays about her almost daily adventures hiking and skiing the back country, usually accompanied by a Double IPA (or two).In this interview, Julie and I talk openly about divorce, the outcome for 39% of American marriages, and the healing process that takes longer than expected. Julie walks me, an avid if amateur 'on-piste' skiier, through the attractions and technical aspects of backcountry skiing, explains why she endures the challenges of the mountains, and why she is hosting back country clinics limited to women and people of color. To try and match the giddy heights of Julie’s daily achievements, I recorded all my voice overs while hiking Blackhead Mountain in deep snow and ice as I close in on my own 3500 Club badge.Find Julie McGuire on Instagramand on FacebookLook for the full Zoom interview on the One Step Beyond YouTube playlistExcerpts from Julie McGuire's essay on hiking the 3500s as a way out of divorce for The CanisterThe Catskill 3500 Club web siteSki Touring for Beginners in Ski magazineAn introduction to splitboards.Catskill Outpost, for your very own Queen of the Catskills t-shirt. To truly learn the roots of the banjo, one must travel to AFRICA! Imagine that; a musical instrument many think of having bluegrass country roots has origins in the mother land. Or how about this one; the 'King' of Rock 'n Roll is actually a 'QUEEN' by the name of Rosetta Thorp, who credits her inspiration to Rock 'n Roll as being gospel music. The truth is, the further you dig into the beginnings of music as we know it, the blacker the roots get. Our apologies if we come off radical, but in the Season Premiere of Sunday Sips, you can expect more conversations on the topic: Black Music? Or Music the is Black?

Doris Rubenstein of Richfield, Minn., learned all about Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company while writing her book Setting the Stage about Jewish theater in the Upper Midwest. She is looking forward to the theater’s online production of “Operation Immigration,” a one-man play written and performed by Avi Aharoni. Aharoni’s father was born in Iran, immigrated first to Israel, and later Minnesota. Aharoni explores the identities of Iranian Jew, Israeli and Minnesotan in this production, which premiered during the 2019 Fringe Festival. The performance at Minnesota Jewish Theatre aired earlier this fall and is streaming online for a second run, aligned with the beginning of Hanukkah. The dates are Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Susana di Palma of Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre in Minneapolis recommended a new holiday tradition this year: a ballet performance of “The Snow Queen” by Ballet Co.Laboratory in St. Paul. The original ballet is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story. In this version by Zoe Emilie Henrot, young Gerda goes on a quest to save her brother who is struck by an “icy fragment” from the queen’s magic mirror. The ballet is set to the music of British composer Dame Ethel Smyth, whose work has received new recognition. The show features the company of Ballet Co.Laboratory and more than 70 student dancers, filmed to be viewed from home. Creators embraced the alternative format, with magical results, di Palma said. The ballet is available for streaming at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 20. Trombonist John Sievers keeps an ear on the Rochester, Minn., music scene, but this week, he had a visual arts exhibit to recommend: Cassandra Buck’s “Reclamation,” which combines painting with fiber arts. Buck’s large paintings “catch your attention from a distance. They’re really bold with bright colors and big strokes,” said Sievers. From close up, Sievers found his attention drawn to the detailed embroidery of the canvas itself. Buck’s work is on display through Jan. 3 at Threshold Art’s new gallery and storefront, which opened late last month in downtown Rochester.
