Welcome to Hot Topics! Join us in this insightful episode as host Gabrielle Crichlow engages with music educator and accomplished harpist and pianist, Candace Lark, to explore the fundamentals of music theory. Together, they break down what music theory truly entails, discussing the critical distinction between reading notes and memorizing sounds, while addressing the concerning gaps in knowledge among college music students. This episode delves into the vital role of music theory in education, covering essential topics such as the core elements of music—including notes, scales, chords, and rhythms—and how these concepts form the foundation for understanding and creating music. Candace emphasizes the importance of skills like sight-reading, ear training, and chord structure, which empower musicians to collaborate, transpose, and compose with greater ease. However, the conversation also highlights significant challenges in traditional music education, including its Eurocentric focus that often neglects diverse musical traditions, as well as the detrimental cuts to music programs in schools. Advocates for music education argue for a greater societal recognition of music's intrinsic value. This episode provides a balanced perspective on the critical debates surrounding music theory and its adaptation in modern music education, making it a must-listen for anyone passionate about the arts.Who is Candace Lark?Candace Lark is a professional harpist, teacher, speaker, and musician life coach. Jamie James, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, joins Charles on Seeing Them Live to discuss his musical journey and new album Straight Up, released on Oglio Records.Jamie reflects on his early musical influences, growing up in Woodstock, Ontario, and his transition from aspiring hockey player to musician after a knee injury. He shares how he taught himself guitar on a damaged acoustic and recalls receiving his first real guitar as a Christmas gift in 1966. The conversation turns to Jamie's formative concert experiences, including seeing Tommy James and the Shondells, Deep Purple, Sly and the Family Stone, The Who, and an early performance by Queen in a small London club. Jamie describes how these shows influenced his approach to live performance. He recounts his time in the 1970s rock scene, playing with various bands before joining the New Steppenwolf in 1977. After leaving the New Steppenwolf, Jamie formed The Kingbees, an ‘80s rockabilly trio that gained a cult following.A favorable review in LA Weekly helped them gain popularity, attracting large crowds to their shows. He discusses their unique rockabilly-inspired style, which predated the Stray Cats and MTV, and his personal shift toward a Buddy Holly-influenced guitar approach. Jamie also shares anecdotes about the LA music scene, recalling interactions with The Blasters and Blackie Dammett, father of Anthony Kiedis, who became an informal emcee for The Kingbees. Additionally, he recounts signing with RSO Records in 1980, initially seeing little success until their song My Mistake gained radio traction in Detroit. This newfound exposure led to major performance opportunities, including a replacement slot at the Toledo Speedway Jam alongside ZZ Top, AC/DC, and Sammy Hagar; a wild gig that took an unexpected turn involving a whiskey bottle that injured an audience member. After the Kingbees disbanded in 1981, Jamie pursued a solo career, but his EP failed to resonate with him. A chance encounter with actor Harry Dean Stanton at a July 4th gathering led to a close friendship and musical collaboration that lasted for years. Jamie formed a band with Stanton, regularly performing at The Lighthouse and The Mint. Later, he connected with actor Dennis Quaid, leading to the formation of The Sharks, a band that endured for nearly 20 years.A severe health scare in 2020 prompted Jamie to recommit to songwriting, leading to the creation of new music during the Covid pandemic. Despite financial challenges, his bandmates were eventually drawn in by the strength of his songs, paving the way for his latest album, Ain't No Big Thing (https://oglio.com/).Jamie's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and an enduring love for making music. In a corner of the chaotic city, Zhang Wei held his most precious saxophone, standing alone on a quiet street corner. Every brick on this street was tempered with his dreams, even in silence, even in hardship. En: Zhang Wei woke up early that day, just to find a resonance of body and mind in the longest dusk on the street. The melodies he played were as melodious as the wind, carrying the clarity and calmness of the morning. They traversed the busy streets, winding through the alleys, impossible to ignore. En: However, the busy crowds of this city seemed to pay no attention to him. They hurriedly walked, their faces cold and indifferent, too preoccupied to listen to the poetry of this street artist. Zhang Wei felt his heart grow heavy, and his saxophone playing gradually lost its strength, becoming just a faint sound traversing the streets and alleys. En: Nevertheless, he persisted, steadfastly playing his saxophone. His melodies hid stories, full of hope and sadness, filled with the bitterness of life and the toughness of life. He knew that his music, like this city and his life, as long as he persevered, would be heard by someone one day. En: Just as he played a more intense melody, a little boy unexpectedly stopped beside him. He listened quietly, his clear eyes full of love for music and curiosity about the world. He had no money, but what he gave Zhang Wei was the sense of recognition he had longed for. En: As night fell, Zhang Wei changed his style of playing. He gently plucked the curved metal body of the saxophone and resonated a solo piece for the little boy. The music flowed through the streets like water, washing away the fatigue of the day, filling the air with warmth and comfort. The little boy looked at Zhang Wei, and in his eyes flashed awe for the music, knowing that it was the most beautiful moment of his life. En: In this bustling city, people hurriedly walked, but only Zhang Wei and the little boy were on the street, enjoying the moment when the night descended and the city lights first lit up, softly reciting the anthem of the city. Finally, the little boy left, but what he left with Zhang Wei was trust, recognition, and the motivation to keep playing. En: Zhang Wei knew that his music, like his life, needed time to mature. Pachelbel's CanonPachelbel's Canon is an accompanied canon by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel in his Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo. It is sometimes called Canon and Gigue in D or Canon in D. Neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition are known, and the oldest surviving manuscript copy of the piece dates from the 19th century. Like his other works, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style, and remained in obscurity for centuries. A 1968 arrangement and recording of it by the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra gained popularity over the next decade, and in the 1970s the piece began to be recorded by many ensembles; by the early 1980s its presence as background music was deemed inescapable. From the 1970s onward, elements of the piece, especially its chord progression, were used in a variety of pop songs. Since the 1980s, it has also been used frequently in weddings and funeral ceremonies in the Western world.
