We talk to a youngster who sells the Polish Ekolot Special Light-Sport Aircraft. In the news, the Spirit Airlines CEO gets a retention bonus, an FAA review board will look at smoke in the cockpit after bird strikes, JetBlue plans to reduce the number of pilots, and a United Airlines captain delights passengers with pizza. In listener mail, we look at jet emissions and what the industry is doing. Guest Ethan Lin is a 13-year-old who sells the Polish Ekolot Special Light-Sport Aircraft. His family purchased an Ekolot Topaz (N717KM) S-LSA in December 2022 after his father decided to switch careers and become an Air Transport Pilot. Ethan and his father started flying the Ekolot together, and because Ethan loved the plane so much, he contacted the distributor in December 2023 and asked about becoming a dealer. He's been selling Ekolots ever since. Because he is only 13 years old, his father has a role in the dealership, but Ethan handles customer service, selling the airplane, and coordinating meeting times. His father does the test flights with people who are interested in buying Ekolots, and he handles the financial side, including filing taxes. Ekolot Special Light-Sport Aircraft We discuss the difference between LSAs and S-LSAs and the proposed Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule, which would redefine the light sport aircraft category. Ethan explains why his family bought the plane and what he likes about it. He markets the plane with the Ekolot Texas Instagram. Also, Ethan and his father attend aviation events, such as Airplanes and Coffee, a monthly fly-in in the Dallas, Texas area at Addison Airport (KADS). Ethan tells us how he learned the Ekolot's specs, and about his plans to fly for an airline and sell planes “on the side.” He also offers his advice to other youngsters who have a passion. Video: Ekolot Topaz Walkaround https://youtu.be/ryNPVaMcBuY?si=VVIGcAXhFC63wreQ Aviation News Spirit Airlines CEO Gets $3.8 Million Bonus 1 Week Before Company Files Bankruptcy An SEC filing says Spirit Airlines, Inc. paid CEO Ted Christie a $3.8 million retention bonus the week before the airline filed for bankruptcy. The bonus is effective if Christie stays with Spirit for another year. Under the restructuring plan, Spirit bondholders would take a $350 million ownership position, erase $795 million of debt, and provide $300 million of debt-in-possession financing. The New York Stock Exchange delisted Spirit stock which now trades in the over-the-counter marketplace.  FAA plans to review 737 MAX engine issue after bird strike incidents Two bird strike events in 2023 with Southwest Airlines aircraft (one in March and one in December) have caused the FAA to assemble a review board that will evaluate the safety of the CFM LEAP-1B engines. After the bird strikes, smoke entered the cockpit although the pilots landed the planes safely. The review board will assess safety data and suggest fixes for manufacturers or airlines. These might lead to mandates. A Seattle Times article suggests that any mandated modifications could delay further the certification of the MAX 7 and MAX 10 models. JetBlue Looks to Trim Pilot Workforce Captain downgrades and base displacements are coming to JetBlue late next year. The airline says it will cut 343 captain positions out of the airline's roughly 4,500 pilots. JetBlue lost $60 million in the third quarter and plans to ground more Airbus A220 and A321neo aircraft in 2024 as a result of ongoing Pratt & Whitney engine troubles. The airline is talking with the Air Line Pilots Association to offer early retirements. Episode Notes A volcano in Iceland that erupted on Monday, December 18th, is not currently posing any direct danger to either residents or tourism, according to officials.  The capital of Reykjavik and much of the rest of the country remain unaffected, and major tour operators are still running trips as planned, writes Dawit Habtemariam, Skift's global tourism reporter. Flights are operating through Keflavik International Airport on schedule. Answering a list of frequently asked questions about the Icelandic volcano's impact, Habtemariam said that the eruption has been shrinking. However, areas near the eruption, like the town of Grindavik, have been evacuated as a precaution. The nearby Blue Lagoon spa expects to stay closed through December 27th. Next, Uber has partnered with expense management companies Brex and Ramp to automatically match Uber rides and Uber Eats meal receipts to corporate expense reports. This new integration eliminates the need for business travelers to manually submit receipts, writes Skift Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.  Uber stated that this automated receipt matching is seeing “strong adoption” from corporate clients so far.  The deal is part of a larger wave of companies attempting to streamline the business travel expense process for workers and travel managers. Finally, Lufthansa Group has ordered aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing to modernize and expand its fleet. The group ordered 40 Airbus A220-300 jets. Lufthansa also ordered 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, marking the return of the 737 to Lufthansa's fleet for the first time since 1995. In a separate deal, EasyJet confirmed an order for 157 additional Airbus A320neo family aircraft to be delivered between 2029 and 2034. The orders support both Lufthansa's and EasyJet's plans to make their fleets more fuel-efficient overall by replacing older jets with newer ones.

Airbus A220 Chief Engineer Explains How Cabin Air is Cleaner Than You Think

On this episode of the Global Connected Aircraft Podcast, we caught up with Jean-François Parent, head of engineering and chief engineer for the Airbus Canada Limited Partnership’s A220 program. The chief engineer explains how the A220 and all Airbus airliners are designed to prevent air contamination under normal operating conditions. When at cruising altitudes, the cabin air is a mix of fresh air drawn from the outside of the aircraft and passed through High-Efficiency-Particulate Arrestors (HEPA) filters designed to remove particles in the air down to the size of microscopic bacteria and virus clusters. The air that is supplied to aircraft lavatories and cargo compartment is evacuated overboard, preventing any return of contaminated air in the cabin. The forward and aft cabin air is distributed from the top of the cabin through airflow channels integral to the passenger baggage overhead bins. It is extracted at floor level. There is no flow forward or rearward along the cabin. As airline passengers begin to slowly get back on aircraft, this discussion can help explain how a modern airplane keeps their cabin air clean and refreshed. New and innovative technologies featured on the A220 are also discussed in this episode. Airbus recently opened its first A220 final assembly line at its Mobile Alabama production site, the second assembly site for the A220 in addition to its program headquarters in Mirabel, Canada. Was ist deine Meinung? #67 - Some of the Boeing 737MAX orders are getting canceled and due to the long waiting times the Airbus A320 series is no option. It’s a bigger plane and would be more appropriate to rival the A320 rather than the A220. Airbus is investing 500 million and more into the development of longer versions. When comparing the 737 Max 8 and the A220 the Boeing option is winning. It can hold up to 210 passengers, flies a little further approx. 1000km in range than the A220 but requires 7,000 more liters of fuel to do so. More cargo space is also available in the 737MAX. The A22 0 is cheaper to run… but the newer Boeing 737 max 8 may have enough extra passengers on board to justify the extra fuel. What is your opinion? Which plane is your favorite 737 or the A220? A name established from the Japanese term for craftsman or artisan, ‘Takumi’ Precision Engineering has been delivering both in abundance to the shores of Ireland for over 20 years. The Limerick based company has invested heavily in recent years with a recent factory expansion that has taken floor space to 50,000 ft2 and over €5m Euros invested in new machine tools and CAM software to further extend its market leading position on the Emerald Isle. Takumi Precision is a prominent figure in the medical device, pharmaceutical, aerospace and precision engineering sectors in Ireland. The company manufactures orthopaedic implants and instruments, cardiovascular assembly aids, medical grade rasps, balloon moulds and delivery system components as well as aluminium wing, brackets and fuselage components for the aero industry and electrical, electronic, mechanical and optical engineering parts for the industrial precision machining sector. Down the years, Takumi has invested in turning centres from Tornos, Doosan and Miyano with 3 and 5-axis machining centres from Doosan, Spinner and most recently Matsuura adding to the plant list. One of the company’s core investments has been hyperMILL CAM software from OPEN MIND Technologies, and this was driven by the onset of barrel tool technology, an influx of 5-axis machines and challenges with previous CAM systems. Commenting on the changes at Takumi, Managing Director Mr Gerry Reynolds says: “Only five years ago, 90% of our work was in the medical industry with the remaining work being across a number of sectors including the aerospace market. We had an opportunity to enter the aerospace market in a more positive way, increasing volumes from 1 to 3-offs to continuous batches of 10-15-off on the Airbus A220, previously known as the Bombardier C-Series. We had to invest in 5-axis technology to accomodate the ramping-up of complex aerospace work and we have bought 13 5-axis machines in the last five years to support this.“ The investment has paid dividends with aerospace work increasing from 5% of turnover to almost 60% in less than five years. However, this is not to the detriment of the medical business, As Gerry continues: “Our business has doubled in size in the last three years due to the increased aerospace work, but the medical sector remains crucially important to our business. Medical components are now 40% of our business, the volume of work has not reduced, it just hasn’t grown at the level of aerospace work. We now have 87 staff and are targeting a monthly turnover of €1m Euros.“ The Influence of CAM “Ten years ago, I didn’t understand CAM and would have argued against it. However, there was a necessity for CAM to run our machines and at the time I called it ‘finger CAM‘, as we were programming at the machine. We progressed to a more comprehensive CAM system and eventually installed eight seats of software. However, a visit to the AMRC introduced us to Ceratizit’s barrel tools and OPEN MIND’s hyperMILL CAM system – this changed the game for Takumi.” After investing heavily in CAM software, Gerry was apprehensive at the prospect of changing CAM systems. “Over the last 5-6 years, we had spent a lot on CAM packages and what we had, worked relatively well; but there were a few issues with processing speed, occasional crashes and some feature limitations. It was the barrel tool machining features within the hyperMILL MAXX High Performance Strategy that appealed to me, but I wanted my team to take the lead, as they would be the ones using the software.” It’s on its way.. “The team did their due diligence, taking in hyperMILL demos and then asking our existing CAM vendor if the barrel tool feature and the mirroring package were available. Our CAM supplier and other vendors all said ‘it’s on its way’ or ‘it’s in development’ regarding more than just these two features in hyperMILL That told us all we needed to know about the various vendors in the market, but it told us a lot more about hyperMILL. They are clearly streets ahead of the other CAM developers. We have rapidly moved to hyperMILL. We bought our first seat 18 months ago and now we have 6 seats of hyperMILL. We are now phasing out our previous CAM system,” continues Gerry. The benefits of hyperMILL The primary reason Takumi Precision invested in hyperMILL was the potential of barrel tools to significantly improve productivity. Commenting on this, Gerry says: “The hyperMILL MAXX Machining High Performance Package and the respective barrel tools with their innovative geometry allow us to step-down 5 to 10mm as opposed to 0.4 to 0.8mm when finishing pockets, walls or profiling features. This has instantly reduced finishing cycles by at least 70%, giving us a minimum overall cycle time improvement of 30% on every component.” However, the benefit is not just the cycle time improvement. “We have historically had a number of staff undertaking finish polishing of parts to ensure our surface finishes exceed customer expectations. Despite the increased speed and step-over rate with hyperMILL MAXX High Performance Machining, the surface finishes are much better than before. This is because the barrel tool has a higher engagement rate that keeps the tool in constant contact with the workpiece.” Another feature that persuaded Takumi Precision to invest in OPEN MIND was the mirroring feature. As Gerry continues: “In the aerospace industry, almost everything is manufactured with a left and right hand component. The mirroring feature in hyperMILL is remarkably comprehensive and with just a touch of a button, we are reducing our programming times on most components by 50%. We have 8 programming staff and the mirroring feature in hyperMILL is effectively doubling the productivity of this team.” Better overall CAM system Whilst hyperMILL has reduced cycle times on the shop floor by over 20% and reduced programming times by upwards of 50% in the office, the benefits reach much further. “hyperMILL is much faster than previous CAM systems and it handles ‘big data’ much better than we have previously witnessed. This has eliminated unforeseen PC crashes and massively improved the reliability, processing and delivery of our data to the shop-floor. Furthermore, hyperMILL has so many ‘obvious’ features and short-cuts that generate savings for the end-user; these ‘obvious’ features don’t appear on other CAM platforms. One feature that simplifies the throughput of programs and parts is hyperCAD. The OPEN MIND CAD system that is integrated into hyperMILL is an excellent platform that has now eliminated our reliance on CAD packages like Inventor. We can now expedite jobs through hyperCAD to hyperMILL with seamless ease – yet another feature that is making life easier for our programming team,” concludes Gerry.

AirBaltic was an early adopter of the Airbus A220, back when it was the Bombardier CSeries. The aircraft is perfectly designed for the Baltic carrier's missions, and CEO Martin Gauss is enthusiastic about the model. He took a few minutes to talk to Skift Airline Weekly editor Madhu Unnikrishnan and Skift Senior Aviation Business Editor Brian Sumers at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Seoul in June.Gauss said for now AirBaltic's focus is on its region of Latvia and neighboring countries, and the airline has no plans to establish bases in Western Europe. Gauss, however, pointed to the example of Finnair, which, like AirBaltic, has a small home population but outsize international traffic. This is the kind of operation he thinks AirBaltic can grow into.Listen for the full interview with AirBaltic CEO Martin Gauss:

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2018 13:08

{module widgetid="50" id="media" action="singlepic" imgid="181160" layoutid="0" layout="" static=""} Вот уже год в Риге на AB дамбе на 60-метровой мачте развевается государственный флаг размером 20 на 10 метров. {module widgetid="50" id="media" action="singlepic" imgid="181161" layoutid="0" layout="" static=""} Теперь этот самолет можно в шутку называть"бортом номер 1".

A little shorter episode this time around. This is episode 5 where we talk about how the partnership between Airbus and bombardier came about, a surprising order announcement for the new aircraft from a US carrier, and what this means for the future of Airbus and Bombardier. Don't forget, I will be flying out to EAA Airventure Oshkosh in our schools awarded brand-new Top Hawk Cessna 172s. The aircraft will be on display at the AOPA booth so come stop by and say hi!
