Earlier this week I was at the law firm Jenner & Block for an event. As I was attaching my lavalier mic, the tech said, referring to me, “she's a pro [with the mic].” Seconds later, the tech came back and said, “I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to assume your gender.” I responded with, “No worries! You guessed right. Thank you.”I found this whole exchange startling in a good way. I even told the story to the group, applauding the firm for giving all of their employees the tools to be LGBTQ-inclusive. I was so impressed by the tech's self-awareness and willingness to apologize for something I hadn't given a moment's thought to. It was also a “no big deal” moment, in that there wasn't a giant discussion – moments of inclusion can be quick and straightforward. My pronouns are she/her and even when I'm not somewhere they're on display, people generally get it right. In the work world, we haven't gotten to a critical mass sharing of pronouns. It's not quite normalized. We're working on it. That's why it's really inspiring to watch that work being done, to experience someone apologizing for something that's not yet normalized, apologizing for something that didn't bother me one bit. Because I'm cisgender, and I have the privilege that comes with it.I'm celebrating the small wins because that's how we build momentum for the big stuff. Let's do this! Here are the other good vibes I found this week: 2. Bank of America Making Big Moves With Avoiding Layoffs, BIPOC Leadership, and More 3. Kris emphasizes the significance of the same plaintiffs' law firms filing 2/3 being responsible for website accessibility litigation. Per Accessibility.com, "Nearly 67% of all website accessibility lawsuits were filed by five law firms out of New York and California." The same website accessibility issues are being claimed over and over in litigation which means the best way to prevent "ADA website" lawsuits is to remediate the accessibility issues that are most commonly claimed by plaintiffs' law firms. I've incorporated all of the most commonly claimed issues in the ADA Compliance Course. You can learn more about the course at https://adacompliance.net. Digital accessibility specialist Denis Boudreau describes the accessibility issues and barriers on PDF documents. From the May 2, 2022, episode.
I'm honoured to introduce you to Brad Bartko, one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. While this video isn't directly related to industrial real estate, I felt it was important to share Brad's story. To help set the stage, I'd ask you to imagine being in a restaurant where the restroom is located down a flight of stairs. But for this particular visualization, you have a mobility issue preventing you from getting down the stairs. Perhaps you have a temporary disability, or one more life-altering like cerebral palsy. As you need to use the restroom, the manager takes you through the kitchen, leads you down a dimly lit hallway, and opens the door to a tiny restroom that is cluttered with miscellaneous junk. Even if the wheelchair could make it through the narrow door, there wouldn't be enough room in the space to maneuver, nor would there be any grab rails to safely move around. You're then told the restaurant isn't set up to handle "you type of people", then you're unceremoniously ushered back to your table. Tragically, these types of indignities happen to disabled people all the time. And when a super positive and optimistic person like Brad shares this story, you can hear the pain and frustration. This was an uncomfortable conversation because Brad would far rather talk about his goals or his dreams. Or sports. Brad definitely knows and loves his sports! But I can't help thinking that accessibility for disabled people is far too often an afterthought. My hope with this video is that even a single person takes action to make their property more accessible. Whether you're a business owner, property owner, or professional, any action you take could have a huge impact on another person. I'd also kindly ask that you connect with Brad. As he describes in the interview, many people are hesitant to talk about these issues, whereas Brad proudly raises his hand to talk. Or as he describes himself: the voice for the voiceless. On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke to Kilkee based Fianna Fáil Cllr Cillian Murphy, and Michael Neenan, Chair of Seafield Tidy Towns. Locals in Seafield are concerned about a number of issues in the area. There is a lack of parking on the road out towards Seafield pier which has led to cars being parked en route, severely limiting access. If the emergency services were needed, they would not be able to get through and there are no public toilets. Money had been afforded to create a co-ordinated car-park, however there have been objections and the local authority haven't yet proceeded.

Perhaps I've been too subtle, so let me speak clearly and louder for those in the back: Accessibility matters. Many podcasters are operating under the impression that accessibility is optional. It's not. Many podcasters operate under the misconception that people who are deaf cannot listen to podcasts, and people who are blind cannot watch videos. Those podcasters are wrong. Very wrong. If that’s you, you don’t have to understand how that’s possible; you just have to accept that it is. And it is. People with vision loss and hearing loss have access to all sorts of tools and services to allow them to enjoy the same content that fully-sighted and full-hearing people enjoy. But only if you, the podcaster, do your part to include them in the party. Here’s how you can start plugging many accessibility holes right now. https://www.descript.com/transcription (Make transcriptions available) starting with your next episode. Fully corrected and readable. Upload subtitles with every video you post. (Hint: the same transcript will help you that too) Use a https://www.google.com/search?q=website+accessibility+checker (website accessibility service) to scan your existing web pages for glaring accessibility issues and fix them. Use alt-tags when you post images on your social media properties. It’s a handful of extra characters that will soon become second nature. If you run or work for a service—either a hosting company or a website-from-RSS company—you need to ensure the pages you generate are accessible. If you run a podcast production house, change your services—and yes, pricing and service-delivery timing—so that accessibility is baked-in to your offerings, not sold as an add-on. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. ----- A written-to-be-read article and a full transcript of the audio of this episode can be found at https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/stop-ignoring-your-podcasts-accessibility-issues (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/stop-ignoring-your-podcasts-accessibility-issues) https://twitter.com/evoterra (Follow @EvoTerra on Twitter) for more podcasting insights as they come. https://buymeacoffee.com/evoterra (Buy him a virtual coffee) to show your support at BuyMeACoffee.com/evoterra And if you need a professional in your podcasting corner, please visithttps://podcastlaunch.pro/ ( Simpler.Media) to see how Simpler Media Productions can help you reach your business objectives with podcasting. If you live with a disability, how are you finding accessibility right now?
"If there is a passion or drive you want to achieve, nothings really impossible if you put in the effort. It might take, a month or a couple of years, but you will be able to overcome those challenges and make the world a better place" - Michael Ko, 2020. In this episode, Michael shares with us about his creation of his voice controlled wheelchair project, discusses the intersection between artificial intelligence, accessibility and gratitude and emphasizes how "people with disability have so much ability."
You might think that not clearing your sidewalk merely inconveniences people. Well, it prevents other people from getting to their destination completely. Believe it or not, people in wheelchairs, and people with other types of disabilities, cannot traverse over giant mounds of snow on your property. We talk to Justina Loh, Executive Director of Disability Alliance BC
Episode #29 of the Ground Shots Podcast features a conversation with Marc Williams, who is based out of Asheville, North Carolina. I took a trip to the Southeast this past September, where I visited my folks in southern Virginia and friends in Asheville, NC. Marc and I met up for an interview in West Asheville, NC, in the backyard of our mutual friend. I've known Marc since 2012 or so, when I moved to Asheville to attend herbalism school. According to the Plants and Healers website: Marc Williams is an ethnobiologist. He has studied the people, plant, mushroom, microbe connection intensively while learning to employ botanicals and other life forms for food, medicine, and beauty. His training includes a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies concentrating in Sustainable Agriculture with a minor in Business from Warren Wilson College and a Master's degree in Appalachian Studies concentrating in Sustainable Development with a minor in Geography and Planning from Appalachian State University. He has spent over two decades working at a multitude of restaurants and various farms. He has travelled throughout 30 countries in Central/North/South America and Europe and all 50 of the United States. Marc has visited over 200 botanical gardens and research institutions during this process while taking tens of thousands of pictures of representative plants. He is also Executive Director of Plants and Healers International www.plantsandhealers.org. Marc has taught hundreds of classes to thousands of people about the marvelous world of humans and their interface with other organisms while working with over 70 organizations in the last few years and online at the website here. His greatest hope is that this effort may help improve our current challenging global ecological situation. In this conversation with Marc, we talk about: the green path as a way to live life and as a physical gathering that is nonlinear and open to anyone Frank Cook's influence on the ideas behind the green path way of life what is the green path? fermenting processes, 're-skilling' for living closely to the land, donation based or free plant walks, the sharing that happens at earthskills gatherings, folk schools, botanical gardens, a camp at the rainbow gathering, and more different opportunities for education about the natural world and our connection to it issues around accessibility at earthskills gatherings and with the 'green path' the urgency of 're-localizing' and learning skills of sustainability Asheville, North Carolina as an incubator for the 'green path' the role of permaculture in the 'green path' the importance of pilgrimage and how a pilgrimage can be interpreted in many ways pilgrimage as a form of meditation and rite of passage addressing the reality of how travel has a large environmental footprint, even travel with good intentions! learning skills as a form of activism Links: 7Song's The Northeast School of Botanical Medicine and CALM first aid camp at the rainbow gathering, mentioned in the podcast: http://7song.com/ Green Path facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/145910154568/ Plants and Healers International: http://www.plantsandhealers.org/ Botany Everyday: http://www.botanyeveryday.com/ The United Plant Savers and Goldenseal Sanctuary: https://unitedplantsavers.org/ The Cabbage School: http://thecabbageschool.net/ Listen to Turtle T. Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers in a wide range of industries to ensure public accommodations, i.e. make their sites, goods and services accessible to individuals with disabilities. This impacts employers in numerous ways that have previously remained off the radar of ADA compliance but are now taking on greater focus, particularly regarding service animal access obligations and website accessibility. In this podcast, two Littler Mendelson shareholders, Peter Petesch, Esq. and Gavin Appleby, Esq., bring their subject matter expertise to bear on this fast growing area of liability exposure. Peter and Gavin discuss the challenges and responsibilities presented by the laws and regulations that have emerged – or have yet to emerge – in the area governing provision of accessibility to individuals with disabilities.
