In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy and Stu look back at India's triumph in the Men's T20 World Cup final. In a show filled with praise for both sides, we pay special attention to Virat Kohli's innings, Jasprit Bumrah's continued excellence, Suryakumar Yadav's catch, Axar Patel's growing importance, Heinrich Klaasen's power hitting and the two captains Aiden Markram and Rohit Sharma for their part in this thrilling encounter. We are officially in the IPL month. And SunRisers Hyderabad have sounded the bugle with a change in captaincy.  Australia's World Cup-winning skipper Pat Cummins takes over SRH from Aiden Markram, who did not have the greatest of seasons last year with the team. With the change in captaincy, SRH hope to get over their terrible memories from the last season where they finished with the wooden spoon. What made SRH make this captaincy move? Cummins' IPL pay cheque of Rs 20.50 crore or his purple patch as a captain for the Australian Men's Cricket team? Before Cummins' captaincy saga took over the cricketing fraternity, the real buzz was about BCCI axing Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from central contract. Was the board right in its decision to reprimand the Indian star duo or the players were hard done by? Also, we discuss the journey of Jonny Bairstow and R Ashwin, who will play their 100th Test in Dharamsala (if weather permits) and ask tough questions of the England cricket team. Can England finally win another Test match and make it 2-3 in Dharamsala? Who will make way for Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian line-up? Tune in! Produced by Sachin Dwivedi

Reading an end of season press release from Cricket South Africa recently, I stumbled upon Aiden Markram talking about the current Proteas' “journey.” To my knowledge, no-one has picked up on the journey (shouldn't that be tagged along on the journey?) possibly because Markram's juicy quote was buried so deep in the release that you'd need an electron microscope to see it. Foolishly perhaps, I read the release to the end, doing what tens of other journalists never do, and discovering that like every sportsman and woman on the planet, Aiden and the Proteas have clambered aboard the journey train. Maybe they've simply clambered on a train upon which to journey, however, for, as we all know, sportsmen and women the world over are going on journeys. All the time. So much packing and preparation, so many departures, so many journeys. But so, so few destinations.Who doesn't like the idea of a journey? We all do. I do. I like the idea of a journey, I really do. I'm on a journey right now – my journey – my journey to grab listeners from my basement squat in the teeming, overcrowded tenement of contemporary podcasting, my journey to earn a crust from giving you, the lucky listener, free original content for weeks without end as I genuflect like a desperate heathen before the GREAT GOD OF THE ALGORITHM. I hope you, too, are on a journey – your journey – to find enlightenment, or happiness, or wealth, or satisfaction or that ever-elusive concept, “the good”. Maybe it's wrong to assume that you're on a journey, maybe you're just unstacking the dishwasher. Maybe you're folding children's clothes, or lifting weights in the gym, or worrying absent-mindedly why he – or she – isn't texting you and why this is so, and what might be wrong? If you're not worrying about what's wrong, you're probably worrying about what's not quite right because that's how we live nowadays, in a perpetual twilight of what's not quite right. Maybe you're walking somewhere, or jogging, or listening to this in the car, in which case it is a journey, but not that kind of journey. It's not a journey-journey, it's simply a journey. Maybe your journey is a journey for meaning, in which case I might just be able to help you because you've stumbled upon this podcast, which is, in its way, a journey for meaning. This is good because it means that our journeys have intersected, the lines of our two journeys for meaning have crossed just outside the station, at least for now. So let's take this journey together.Although we're all on our different journeys, sometimes meeting, sometimes missing, it is important to say at this juncture – and just in case I haven't made it completely clear – that the word “journey”, as in a quest or voyage to somewhere new, is one of the great clichés of contemporary sport. Everyone in the sporting world, irrespective of sport, irrespective of gender, is on some damn journey, as though the journey itself confers something special and magic and, even, spellbinding. On the upside, at least it's more concrete than the frustratingly vague reliance on the word, process, or variations thereof, such as processes, which used to be the dominant cliché, the Manchester City or Usain Bolt of sport clichés, of three, four, five years ago. Often people back then used to talk about sticking to their processes, as if by clutching processes tight everything would be okay, like they were a little pDonate to The Luke Alfred Show on Patreon.Get full written episodes of the show a day early on Substack.Check out The Luke Alfred Show on YouTube and Facebook.

Host Carl Lewis and cricket punter Lwanele Poswayo preview the big group 2 ICC T20 World Cup match between South Africa and Pakistan in Sydney.   South Africa's batting line-up is unlikely to change as long as they're winning, which probably means that there's still no room for Reeza Hendricks. The only consideration for them is whether to bring back Tabraiz Shamsi in place of one of the quicks, which could leave Lungi Ngidi on the sidelines.   South Africa: : (possible) 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma (capt), 3 Rilee Rossouw, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 David Miller, 6 Tristan Stubbs, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Anrich Nortje 10 Lungi Ngidi/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Kagiso Rabada.   Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the match with a knee injury so Pakistan's line-up will have atleast one change. Asif Ali was dropped after the India match but may be brought back in to the XI unless Fakhar is ruled out of the tournament entirely, in which case Mohammad Haris could be brought in as a player replacement.   Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Shan Masood, 4 Asif Ali, 5 Iftikhar Ahmed, 6 Shadab Khan, 7 Mohammed Nawaz, 8 Mohammed Wasim, 9 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 10 Haris Rauf, 11 Naseem Shah. Pitch and conditions This match will be played on the same pitch as the Sri Lanka-New Zealand game, where Trent Boult took a career-best 4 for 13. There's expected to be something in it for the quicks but also plenty of opportunities to score big. Sydney is the only venue at the tournament where teams have breached 200. The best news is that there's no chance of rain at all, with the temperatures in the mid-teens. Stats and trivia Pakistan have a 3-0 win record against South Africa at the T20 World Cup, even though they last met in 2012. The average first innings score in Sydney at this tournament so far is 188, the highest of the venues used.

Host Carl Lewis and cricket punter Lwanele Poswayo review the Proteas' massive win over India in the T20 World Cup. An astonishing display of fast bowling from South Africa's Lungi Ngidi and half-centuries from David Miller and Aiden Markram saw South Africa to a nail-biting five-wicket victory against India in their T20 World Cup match at the Perth Stadium on Sunday. India collapsed to 49-5 after choosing to bat first before recovering to a total of 133-9 but South Africa stumbled to 40-3 at the halfway stage of the run chase before a fourth-wicket stand of 76 saw them accelerate to victory with just two balls to spare with Miller keeping cool under intense pressure to finish unbeaten on 59 from 46 balls with four fours and three sixes. Suryakumar Yadav fought a brilliant, lone battle for India with a remarkable 68 from just 40 balls (6x4, 3x6) while the next highest score was just 15.   South Africa's four-man pace attack complimented each other impressively and, although it was man-of-the-match Ngidi who claimed 4-29 the other three quicks all contributed to India's demise on a fast, bouncy pitch in the Western Australian capital. South Africa struggled desperately for the first 10 overs of the run-chase limping to 40-3 having been 3-2 and 24-3 with left-arm swing bowler, Arshdeep Singh, claiming wickets with his first and third deliveries. Quinton de Kock (1) edged an outswinger to second slip and Rilee Rossouw (0) was trapped lbw by an inswinger. Captain Temba Bavuma again struggled with 10 from 15 balls before attempting a ramp shot against Mohammad Shami and edging into the gloves of Dinesh Karthik. Markram and Miller stabilised the innings but at drinks, there were still 94 runs required from the final 10 overs. A change of gear from Markram saw 16 runs accrue from the 11th over from Hardik Pandya and 17 from the 14th bowled by Ashwin to seemingly put South Africa back on track with 35 runs required from the final five overs with seven wickets in hand. But a mistimed pull against Pandya to Yadav at deep midwicket saw Markram depart for 52 from 41 balls with six fours and a six. Offspinner Ashwin started the 18th over with South Africa requiring 24 runs from the final three overs but Miller calmed South African nerves – and kept his own – to hit two sixes back over the bowler's head to reduce the target to 12 runs from 12 balls before Tristan Stubbs (6) was trapped lbw. Earlier India openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul struck a legside six apiece but otherwise adopted a cautious approach before Rohit (15 off 14 balls) spliced a hook shot against Ngidi's second delivery lobbing a tame return catch to the bowler. Ngidi struck again with his sixth ball when Rahul (9 off 14 balls) edged a fierce lifter to Markram at deep slip with the total at 26-2 after five overs. There was no respite with Virat Kohli (12) failing to control a hook shot in Ngidi's next over and offering a simple catch to Kagiso Rabada at fine leg before Deepak Hooda (0) was beaten for pace by Anrich Nortje and edged to ‘keeper de Kock. India's top-order disintegration was completed in Ngidi's third over – the ninth of the innings – when Hardik Pandya (2) mistimed another hook shot to fine leg where Rabada claimed a magnificent, diving second catch of the innings. Dinesh Karthik contributed just six from 15 balls to a sixth-wicket stand of 52 with Yadav before slashing a Wayne Parnell delivery to Rossouw at cover and there were further wickets for Parnell when Ashwin (7) heaved a slower ball to mid-on for Rabada's third catch and Yadav miscued a clever slower ball to Keshav Maharaj at mid-off. Parnell, bowling two overs in the Power Play and two at the end of the innings, returned a sensational analysis of 4-1-15-3 while Nortje (4-0-23-1) and Rabada (4-0-26-0) did their jobs superbly. The victory moves South Africa above India to the top of the log and victory against Pakistan in Sydney on Thursday will all but secure their place in the semifinals.   INDIA: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Arshdeep Singh SOUTH AFRICA: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma (captain), Rilee Rossouw, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

The pair provide best bets and player prop bets for:   South Africa v Bangladesh in Sydney South Africa have a chance to get two crucial points against Bangladesh after their opening game against Zimbabwe was washed out in Hobart. Bangladesh, with an important opening-match win under their belt, are just about confident enough to give them yet another headache. Team news South Africa might drop one of the fast bowlers to bring in Tabraiz Shamsi, who could be handy at the SCG. South Africa (probable): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma (capt), 3 Rilee Rossouw, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 David Miller, 6 Tristan Stubbs, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi Ngidi Bangladesh usually don't change their winning combination but they might somehow try to accommodate Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the XI. Bangladesh (probable): 1 Soumya Sarkar, 2 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 3 Litton Das, 4 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 5 Afif Hossain, 6 Nurul Hasan (wk), 7 Mosaddek Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Hasan Mahmud Pitch and conditions This match will be played on a new pitch that has a decent covering of grass but is expected to be reasonably dry. The weather has been dry and warm in the lead-up but there's some rain in the forecast for Thursday afternoon.   India v Netherlands in Sydney   Friday will be the first instance of India and Netherlands contesting in a T20 international. While India will enter as clear favourites, they will also be the first to point out the danger that Scott Edwards' team poses. Netherlands are the only Associates in the Super 12s. They have worked hard to earn their place and now their players want to enjoy playing alongside the big boys, a long-cherished dream. India, Pakistan and South Africa are in their group, and the Dutch want to ensure they push themselves to create an upset.   Pakistan v Zimbabwe in Perth   In the aftermath of two derbies, two different moods. Zimbabwe upset with having had to carry on in the conditions they did against South Africa, but no doubt relieved to have come away with a point. Pakistan, meanwhile, anguished at seeing two points slip away in that wild last over at the MCG against India.

India take on South Africa on Wednesday in the first of three T20Is as the preparations for next month's T20 World Cup intensify. The hosts come into this match full of confidence after a fantastic 2-1 series win against the current T20 World Cup holders Australia. Their opponents, the Proteas, were last in action in this format when they beat Ireland 2-0 in August of this year. India are hitting form at just the right time. Their key batsmen are also playing well after brilliant batting performances against Australia. Their bowling on the other hand is a bit of a concern, especially in the death over which will be a huge test against South Africa's firepower in the middle order. South Africa proved earlier in the year that they are more than capable of going toe-to-toe with India in the sub-continent and their recent form in T20I cricket cannot be understated. They are the value bet at 2.65 but I just see the team that has played more T20Is recently winning this match. Suggested Bet: India to win 1.45 Yadav is India's form batsman if not world cricket's. He's climbed to number three in the T20I rankings and was the highest run scorer for India in the series against Australia, batting with aggression throughout the series. Suryakumar Yadav has scored 34 runs or more in four of his last seven T20Is and I expect him to get more than that in this game. Suggested Bet: S Yadav to be India's top batsman 5.50 Along with Aiden Markram, Miller has been the Proteas' best batsman in this format in the last 12 months. He has scored 850 runs in T20 cricket this year at an average of 42.5 while striking at 140.5. I like both him and Markram for this match with the latter averaging at an immense 58 with a strike rate of 141 in Asian conditions. There's more value in backing David Miller at 6.50 as I feel this could be a low-scoring game with the middle to lower order playing a huge role. Suggested Bet: D Miller to be SA's top batsman 6.50 Alternative Bet: A Markram to be SA's top batsman 5.50 India have hit 62 sixes in the powerplay this year which shows their change in approach. The Proteas take a different approach with Temba Bavuma or Reeza Hendricks usually needing a couple of overs to get their eye in. I expect India to get off to a faster start than the visitors. Suggested Bet: India to score the highest runs in the 1st 6 overs at 1.71 The average score across the 16 T20 matches at Greenfield Stadium from 2017-2019 stands at 141 runs, with the 10 teams not managing to surpass the 200-run mark even once in this two-year period. I expect this to be a low-scoring encounter with also some of the Proteas batsmen not having played in this format recently. Suggested Bet: The highest individual score to be under 67.8 at 1.86

Australia beat the West Indies and South Africa beat England as the aussies go through to the semi final of the T20 World Cup on Net run rate.6 SATAustralia v West Indies, Abu Dhabi (10:00 GMT)Australia went in to their final group game unchanged and they claimed another win that was a relative cruise for the Aussies, winning by 8-wickets thanks in large part to a superb 89* for David Warner, as he got them over the line and past the 158 target in just 16.2 overs. The Windies put up a total of 157/7 with captain Kieron Pollard top scoring with 44 off 31, whilst Evin Lewis hit 29 and Shimron Hetmyer 27. Josh Hazlewood led the Aussie bowling attack with his 4/39 with a wicket each for Mitch Starc, Pat Cummins and hero of their last outing, Adam Zampa. The reply was ruthless as David Warner led the way with his 56 ball 89. Mitch Marsh also showed his stuff with 53 off 32. Akeal Hossain and Chris Gayle claimed the 2 wickets. The Aussies finished the group with 4-wins and had to then had to wait for the outcome of the England/South Africa result as it would come down to NRR if SA were to record a win against leaders England…England v South Africa, Sharjah (14:00 GMT) So, despite SA claiming a brilliant 10-run win over England, their NRR was just not good enough as they missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals, being pipped by Australia in to 2nd place after both finished on 8-points, England also finished with 8-points but kept hold of the top spot. After Moeen Ali grabbed the early wicket of Reeza Hendricks, it looked good for England but enter Rassie van der Dussen, who struck a fantastic unbeaten 94 off just 60 balls. Quinton de Kock hit 34 whilst Aiden Markram supported van der Dussen brilliantly with another wonderful ½ century for Markram – this one 52 off 25. Only Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid took a wicket for England. In reply, England made a solid start but Jason Roy had to retire hurt on 20 shortly before fellow opener Jos Buttler went for 26 off 15, ct Bavuma off the bowling of Anrich Nortje. Bairstow came and went but the middle order of Moeen Ali (37 off 27), Dawid Malan (33 off 26) and Liam Livingstone (28 off 17) also kept the chase alive, as did skipper Eoin Morgan (17 off 12) but SA kept chipping away and England just could not get a partnership going long enough to get them over the line and finished the 20-overs just 10-runs short, finishing on 179/8. Credit must go to the SA bowling attack with Shamsi grabbing 2/24, Rabada claiming an expensive 3/48 and Dwaine Pretorius taking 2/30 off his 3. Despite the defeat, England will be satisfied with their efforts as they held onto top spot and go through to the semi's as Group A winner.

The Proteas are now on the back foot at the ICC T20 World Cup, after a 5 wicket loss to Australia in their opening match of the Super 12 stage. SA opted to bat first but their top order batsmen faltered, with Aiden Markram putting together a rescue job scoring 40 to help SA post 118/9 in their 20 overs. SA's bowlers put up a spirited fight as they looked to defend that total, with Anrich Nortje taking 2-21, but Steven Smith and Marcus Stoinis helped Australia ease to victory. Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma highlighted a couple of points they'll be looking to improve on when they face the West Indies on Tuesday.

The Proteas suffered defeat in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup, losing to Australia by 5 wickets in their first match of the Super 12 stage of the global showpiece. SA batted first and struggled to 118/9 in their 20 overs - with Aiden Markram the only batter getting past twenty, with his 40 run knock salvaging SA's innings. Australia made fairly light work of the runchase - but there was a slight silver lining with each of SA's bowlers despite allrounder Dwaine Pretorious taking a wicket. Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma said their batting lineup just didn't give them enough to defend on the day.

SPORTS Graeme Smith Pulls Up Listless SA batsmen Former SA skipper Graeme Smith feels that one of the biggest problems that came to the fore for the Proteas was the way they handled the Indian wrist-spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. The duo together picked up 33 wickets in the series, and the opposition batsmen had no plan B against them. Stand-in skipper Aiden Markram's batting performance in the series wasn't good enough and Smith hopes that series loss has not affected Markram's confidence. Smith was also critical of the performance of some of the senior players in the team, like Hashim Amla, David Miller and JP Duminy.
