Elvis Mitchell, longtime host of KCRW's “The Treatment”, and producer of “The Black List”, joins Mike to discuss his new documentary “Is that Black Enough for You?”  The film recounts an explosion of Black Film which occurred mainly in the period of 1968-1978, placing it within the context of both the prior failure of Hollywood to provide real representation of Black characters, as well as a strand of chiefly independent African American-produced film that Elvis traces back to as early as the 1910s and 1920s.   Elvis tells Mike how the movies affected his grandmother's (literal) dreams, as well as how they drove the (figurative) dreams and fantasy life of his stellar cast.  Elvis explains to Mike his nuanced view of the legacies of such luminaries as Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, and Orson Welles.  What role did Mohammed Ali play for Black filmmakers?  And how did Diane Sands embody the promise of this era?  Mike and Elvis also discuss his process–narration first, clips second–and why he passed on the declamatory “They call me Mr. Tibbs” moments in favor of clips which demonstrate the interiority and development of characters. Les esperamos cada sabado quincenalmente a las 21:00 de la noche!

Si cette histoire de trois hommes, cupides et bandits à des degrés divers, qui tentaient de s'emparer d'un trésor au temps de la guerre civile, ravit d'emblée le public, la bande son ne fut pas en reste ! Elle resta à tout jamais gravée dans l'univers des chefs-d'œuvre des musiques pour l'écran. La partition du compositeur se révéla tout à fait originale au sens strict du terme en raison de son côté inédit. L'instrumentation là encore très originale, reposait sur une conception musicale sans équivalent, singulière et très éclectique, voire très audacieuse, frisant souvent avec l'opéra baroque, entre touches d'humour et vrai lyrisme. Ennio Morricone eut en effet recours à plusieurs instruments. On retrouvait bien sûr les sifflements du soliste Alessandro Alessandroni, les vocalises insolites du chœur à huit voix Cantori Moderni, une guitare électrique, l'orgue Hammond, le piano électrique Rhodes, le synket (déjà évoqué), ainsi qu'un chœur d'hommes poussant des cris guerriers « go, go… »). Morricone y ajouta une flûte à bec soprano, une trompette-piccolo, un arghilofono, une guitare mexicaine, et pour agrémenter le tout, quelques solistes (comme Edda Dell'Orso) que le compositeur prit un malin plaisir à faire intervenir de multiples fois. La convocation de multiples instruments, à priori surprenants atypiques et difficiles à marier, résultait pour une grande part de la formation post-webernienne de Morricone qui se caractérisait par une pratique musicale à base d'instruments atypiques.

Siamo poco propensi a ricordare i momenti tristi della storia della musica ma questa settimana facciamo un eccezione. Il motivo è l'uscita di un nuovo disco, di cui diamo notizia, la causa, o la storia, di questa eccezione è John Lennon. In queste settimane stiamo facendo fatica a ritornare "In soffitta" per recuperare qualche vecchio disco ma in cambio festeggiamo alla grande un compleanno discografico. Questa settimana ricorre l'anniversario della pubblicazione di Between del Vittorio Cuculo Quartet. Festeggiamo quell'avvenimento scambiando qualche chiacchiera con il protagonista principale di quel disco: il giovane sassofonista romano Vittorio Cuculo. Protagonista assoluta della seconda parte di questa puntata, Vittorio racconta tante cose e ci colpisce per la gratitudine che rivolge ai suoi mentori e a quanti lo hanno accompagnato in questo primo scorcio di carriera artistica. Follemente innamorato del jazz e del suo strumento, a Vittorio diamo la possibilità di questo spazio sperando in futuri comportamenti a favore dei giovani che vorranno approcciare allo studio della musica e scegliere la strada da lui intrapresa.
