I was lucky enough to do street promotions in Chicago for Sha-Key's debut album, produced largely by Earl Blaize, as I was, and remain a big fan of that album, "A Head Naddas Journey To Aidi Skizm" ('94). This is the story of that record, including input given to me from Sha-key and Earl Blaize to help fill in some gaps. it talks about her being signed to Imago Records, and what went wrong, as well as what happened next in her career, which included a transition into the world of tech, creating one of the earliest Hip Hop platforms on the world wide web, Guillotine Hip Hop. In this episode of Weird Rap Podcast, we're joined by Mars Kumari and Volume 10. Mars Kumari (aka Bruiser Marcy), member of Deadverse and Bruiser Brigade, has been bridging the gap between ambient noise and rap, making a stir in the last couple years as her work has been embraced by the likes of JUNE!, Dälek, and Danny Brown. Meanwhile she's released several solo instrumental albums heralded by avant-garde electronic listeners and hip hoppers alike. We discuss her artistic approach and music as therapy, plus she shares some exclusive tracks. Volume 10 (of Goodlife, Project Blowed, etc.) returns once again to share his thoughts on the new Backwoodz compilation, High Bias. He also talks about almost retiring, the tepid response to his most recent album 'Volume 10 As Dean Hawkins,' and more. In the bonus episode, many recent music releases are discussed including some by Machine Girl, Andrew Mbaruk, DJ Smiley Bobby, Buck 65, DJ Sega, Kohai the Wonderguy, Rahim Salaam, Moor Mother, Quelle Chris, Grill Billyenz, william crooks, Pan Amsterdam, Yung Morpheus, Lil Kydd!?, Joan Of The Stockyards, 40 Ounces Of Palimpestial Equations (Rammellzee and Part 2), Yole Boys, and First Degree The D.E. We also report on a recent concert featuring M. Sayyid (of Antipop Consortium), Jel, and Mars Kumari. And finally, Mars Kumari leaks two exclusive tracks, available to download. On this episode of The DOD45 show Adrienne & @ArtByTai chop it up with M. Sayyid of #AntipopConsortium. He joined the show all the way over from #Paris, to discuss his upcoming album & sequel to his last album, Error Tape 2. They also crammed in as much discussion as they could about other random things while Tai tapped into some nostalgia with a drawing of #Frankenberry & #CountChocula cereal mascots. They ran the gamut on subject matter including the progression of tabloid talk shows like #MontelWilliams & #MauryPovich into the #RealHousewives & #Kanye drama, and Sayyid also speaks fondly of the #BeastieBoys, #DeLaSoul, (RIP #Trugoy) and #FreestyleFellowship. Other notable names to reach their discussion include #TomGreen, #BillyJoel, #LucBesson, #ElodieBouchez, #BarbaraWalters, (Rest in Peace), #RogerWaters, #LaetitiaMasson & French electronic artist @JoakimBouaziz. This is a good one, so Don't miss it. Put the kettle on, butter the escargot, and lend your attention to this episode of #TheDOD45Show with M. Best known for his work with the avant-garde hip-hop group Antipop Consortium, New York MC Beans rocks a bugged-out style based mostly on a high-speed delivery and extremely dense rhyme schemes, generally backed by intricate production loaded with bizarre time signatures, spastic sound effects, and beats that are either extremely bare-bones or overwhelmingly complex. Unsurprisingly, he remains completely unknown by the masses, but is embraced by fans of fringe music and adventurous listeners worldwide. Despite no chance of commercial airplay, he has a huge discography and has performed at large festivals around the globe, proving that there is something inherently appealing about his unapologetically bewildering sound. In this episode we discuss his upbringing in White Plains , NY.His early hip-hop influences and meeting the female MC 99.His time honing his skills at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. The current state of hip-hop and his recent solo projects.
Episode Notes Welcome to the annual discussion of the Oscar Best Picture nominees, and joining in the discussion, as usual, is Jen. There were ten nominees! So much to discuss! Two quick warnings heading into this one: 1) There are some mild spoilers throughout, so skip the entire discussion for that movie, based on the timestamps below, if you're sensitive about spoilers. There's only one particularly big spoiler, which is for Nightmare Alley, and so I've specially tagged that one. 2) Jen and I are somewhat down on the movies this year, and so it's not all singing praises. But we really liked a couple of them! Here are the timestamps for you to carefully navigate the episode if you choose: Intro: 0:00:00 to 0:01:32 Dune: 0:01:32 to 0:06:26 Nightmare Alley: 0:06:26 to 0:12:15 PARTICULARLY SPOILER-Y NIGHTMARE ALLEY PART: 0:09:22 to 0:12:15 Don't Look Up: 0:12:15 to 0:19:38 Power of the Dog: 0:19:38 to 0:26:10 West Side Story: 0:26:10 to 0:32:14 King Richard: 0:32:14 to 0:38:17 Drive My Car: 0:38:17 to 0:46:42 Belfast: 0:46:42 to 0:49:50 Licorice Pizza 0:49:50 to 1:03:58 CODA: 1:03:58 to 1:29:05 (but Licorice Pizza tangent 1:15:12 to 1:17:17) Viewing Omission Regrets: 1:29:05 to 1:33:49 Closing 1:33:49 to 1:34:15 As always, the intro music is a minimal version of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium from the Free Music Database. Thanks for listening!
Episode Notes Please join Johnny and me for the second half of our incredibly lengthy, but hopefully enjoyable, discussion about Groundhog Day. In this installment we finally get around to talking about our favorite and least favorite parts of the movie, the message of the movie, and also a truly unfortunate video game adaptation. As always the theme song is a modified version of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium from the Free Music Database. The other audio clips and sound effects are used for commentary purposes and fun and constitute fair use and whatnot and please don't sue me for making this for the ten people who listen. Thanks and have a good one!
Episode Notes Join me as I try to continue my streak of holiday-themed movie discussions with what is arguably one of the best, most consistent holiday genres--Groundhog Day movies. I am joined by good friend and fellow time loop fan Johnny Rhoads and we . . . pretty much never stop talking about Groundhog Day and time loop media in general. Our conversation went so long that this very long podcast is not even close to the whole discussion, and I will be putting out part two soon. In the meantime, happy Groundhog Day, and go watch Groundhog Day! As always the theme is a modified version of Reflections by Anti-Pop Consortium. Clips from Groundhog Day and the Making of Groundhog Day are my attempts at fair use. Byeeeeee!
Episode Notes Please enjoy this very timely double-feature episode with Jen. We talk about our two picks for holiday movies: The Family Stone and Scrooged. One of us, I won't say who, is a Scrooge about Scrooged! Here are some timestamps if you just want to check out certain discussions: Intro: 0:00:00 to 0:01:41 The Family Stone: 0:01:41 to 0:40:36 Scrooged: 0:40:36 to 01:08:49 Outro: 01:08:49 to 01:09:50 Happy . . . holidays . . . everybody? I hope you enjoy our chat. As always, the theme song is a remixed version of Reflections by Anti-Pop Consortium, from the Free Music Archive. Byeeee!
Episode Notes Please enjoy this looooong discussion with the excellent guest John Rhoads about the terrible movie Jingle All the Way. Seriously this episode is like five minutes shorter than the movie itself. I apologize for: 1) this coming out way after Christmas, and 2) kind of a lot of background noise. I hope you still enjoy it! Or just save this one and revisit it during Christmas 2022. As always, the theme song is a modified version of Reflections by Anti-Pop Consortium from the Free Music Archive. There are various clips from Jingle All the Way and interviews in this episode and I'm gonna go ahead and claim fair use what with all our insightful commentary. Thanks and have a good one!
Episode Notes Welcome to the (sort of) next installment of the FANCY Fantasy Football Podcast that is not at all about fantasy football. In the (sort of) start of a series of episodes about holiday movies, this episode is a long chat with returning guest Abby Saul, who selected The Holiday. My sincerest apologies to my previous guest Alex, with whom I had a lovely chat about Elf, but I failed to record the discussion. Oof. Anyway, as always, please enjoy and let me know what you think. The theme song is a modified version of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium. There's also a couple of clips in this episode and, uhh, I am calling fair use because of our discussion adding context and analysis. Have a good one!
Episode Notes After an extended absence, the FANCY Podcast is back to discuss a whole bunch of Halloween movies with dear friend Abby. In the latest episode of Weird Rap Podcast we speak in-depth with Bigg Jus and pay respect to Biz Markie. Kool Keith returns for another round of Weird Rap Horoscopes, and Eb&Flow is back with a Rap Grifters report. We also introduce the Hip Hop Haikus segment with guest poet Andrew Mbaruk. Plus more! MC/producer Bigg Jus, who ghosted the world for 9 years, is making his way back into the public eye as he ramps up for a string of releases. We get into the grit of his upbringing as an orphan, adopted only to become homeless, and how this led him to graffiti. From military school to street crime and finally into music (where he first made his mark with Company Flow), we follow Jus's trajectory through the decades, wherein his political, historical and sonic studies lead up to the current day. He talks about his upcoming projects with Orko Eloheim (as Nephilim Modulation Systems), his album-in-progress Sonoluminescence, and how he's finally found the family that eluded him as a kid. The bonus episode features another 23 minutes with Jus in which we get deeper into his writing and recording practices, political views, pre-Company Flow works, and more. It's yours, along with all the past bonus content (including exclusive interviews with Orko, Antipop Consortium, New Kingdom, etc.), for 3 tiny dollars at http://patreon.com/weirdrap. The Rap Grifters series continues as guest correspondent Eb&Flow breaks down the thinly-veiled white supremacist dogwhistler Tom MacDonald. The segment is followed by a brief discussion with Eb&Flow. As one of rap's original outsiders, Biz Markie's recent passing looms large in the weird rap universe. We detail his musical history and what he meant to us. Also made a playlist of some of our Biz favorites at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO3PzIvK6s2xC0VbjI5Z4ySXlRUWh-AXe. We introduce several new segments to the show: Are You Wealthy, Did You Know?, and Hip Hop Haikus, the latter featuring a brief original spoken-word piece by MC/poet Andrew Mbaruk. We also talk about Bill Laswell and the Jungle Brothers’ fated project Crazy Wisdom Masters. Guest correspondent Beverly Fre$h returns to break down Self Jupiter’s verbal and lyrical approach, from his work on Freestyle Fellowship’s Innercity Griots album through his latest releases with Kenny Segal, discussing the subconscious, finding hidden rhythms, leaving room for interpretation, and artworks as living entities. Jupiter also takes us back to the very first night of the infamous Good Life open mic, followed by the formation of Freestyle Fellowship, up through the subsequent years of Project Blowed, sharing how he regarded the growing underground hip hop scene of the late 90s which he and his peers had helped to birth. We recommend some new releases by Tracy Jones and Bilal Salaam, and an older one that deserves more attention: FLANCH. And we recommend a podcast, Rhythms Per Minute (hosted by Bloodmoney Perez), particularly an episode illuminating the brilliance of Bigg Jus. Weekly Weird Rap Discussion Gang at youtube.com/weirdrap. In this edition we speak to Sunspot Jonz (Mystik Journeymen/Living Legends) and Aaron Cartier, plus a salute to MF DOOM, a middle finger to year-end lists, new music recommendations, and more. Regardless of familiarity with Sunspot Jonz, any rap fan should be fascinated and inspired by his triumphant tale of overcoming the odds by pure grit. Underground hip hop culture as we know it was shaped to a large degree by this unsung hero, so we insist, no we demand, that everyone familiarize themselves. Sunspot (pka BFAP) walks us through the mid-thru-late 90s rise of Mystik Journeymen and Living Legends as they established themselves first in the Bay Area and then worldwide. We discuss how they built an indie rap music market from scratch and popularized the terms "underground hip hop" and "backpacker". We detail their forging of an international DIY hip hop tour circuit and their approach to self-marketing and distribution before the internet. Being some of the first bedroom hip hop producers and even creating the first consumer "beat tape", we look at their then-unique lo-fi and low-budget approach to recording and manufacturing. Sunspot also speaks about his early relationships with Del, Hieroglyphics, and Good Life/Project Blowed. Finally, he explains the importance of taking risks and believing in oneself. In a complete 180, we talk to newschool genre-hopping MC/producer Aaron Cartier, getting into the workings behind his noise-trap album Aaron Cartier Best Dog (co-produced by Dylan Brady of 100 Gecs fame) and more. We also pay tribute to the life and legacy of genius innovator MF DOOM, detail the harm and hubris of year-end lists, recommend the Media Roots Radio podcast (Soundcloud / Apple / Stitcher), and shout out some recent music releases (Spirejump: Granville 31, RAP Ferreira: Bob’s Son, and Moor Mother & billy woods: BRASS). Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Every year Dad Bod Rap Pod does something slightly different for these holiday episodes. One year we did a radio-style music mix, the next we told stories from our personal lives, and this year we have a positive, fun conversation about some music that we love with a very special guest. Josh Gondelman is a beloved Twitter institution, a gifted stand up comedian, author of the book Nice Try and a writer and executive producer on Desus & Mero. Josh joined us for a conversation about things we love: The song Bubblz by Anti-Pop Consortium, the Music of MF DOOM, rap songs about everyday life, and the Method Man & Redman album Blackout! We sincerely hope that you enjoy this episode and maybe look to revisit some of the music discussed. It has been and will continue to be a rough year for a wide variety of reasons, but we are sincerely thankful for everyone who listens to DBRP, which is part of the Stony Island Audio podcast network.

In this episode we’re joined by trailblazing leftfield rap group Antipop Consortium. And we speak with Brzowski. Plus a poem by Beverly Fre$h, a message from Celestaphone, a review of Roy Christopher’s book Dead Precedents, and a rundown of new music releases by doseone, Height Keech, Lil Ghostwriter, drwg, and Serengeti. In the late 90s Antipop Consortium took the experimental NYC hip hop scene by the neck. The 4-man wrecking crew of Beans, Earl Blaize, Hprizm (AKA High Priest), and M.Sayyid combined futuristic production with aggressive abstract rhymes, heralding a wave of artists which would pave the way for Def Jux, and would forever change the course of music. While remaining true to their name, out of the limelight, APC grew a massive underground fanbase and remains celebrated worldwide to this day. Our in-depth conversations cover the group’s formation, creative approach, disbanding, solo iterations, and an announcement that will have fans elated. We also unveil a world premiere remix of the group’s single "Apparently" by longtime collaborator MegMan. Weird Rap #2 features a trip into the wild mindscape of rap visionary Cambatta (plus an exclusive track), a journey across time with hip hop historian Nate Patrin, a deep dissertation on GZA and flat earth theory, an ethics discussion with Rob Sonic and Hprizm, new music reviews, and even more! First, Cambatta peels back some layers on his multi-dimensional lyrics, he details his relationship with spirituality, psychedelic drugs and addiction, he shares his feelings on being outsider, and we ponder why the music world resists complexity. We also get a preview of his forthcoming song "Magic Hour (Acid Shower)". Check out Cambatta at http://cambattamusic.com, http://twitter.com/cambattamusic & http://instagram.com/cambattamusic. Next, we take a look at the GZA’s recent controversy around flat earth theory, and we flip the script on his classic single "Labels". (See GZA’s post that shook the "globe" at https://www.instagram.com/p/CDmWPGEnCt6.) Then Nate Patrin, author of Bring That Beat Back: How Sampling Built Hip Hop, discusses the evolution of boundary-pushing hip hop production from its early days to current times, also looking at where rap music may be heading in the future. Follow Nate at http://twitter.com/natepatrin. Rob Sonic of Hail Mary Mallon and Sonic Sum returns, and Hprizm, AKA High Priest of Anti-Pop Consortium, makes a brief pre-appearance before his full-length interview on the next episode, to discuss the ethics of non-permissioned sampling in music production. Stay abreast of Rob Sonic via http://skypimps.bandcamp.com and http://instagram.com/bobbyfreedom, and keep up with Hprizm at https://hprizm.bandcamp.com and https://twitter.com/HPrizm. Check out their current show, What Had Happened Was, and forthcoming podcasts, via https://twitter.com/StonyIslandPods. And we review some recent music releases: The Same Day by Oblio, of Dreadnots (https://dreadnotsmusic.bandcamp.com), Jadasea’s Half Life EP (https://jadasea.bandcamp.com), The Damage Done by Marrow, AKA Routiger Slob (https://marrowraps.bandcamp.com/), and Mr. Yote’s album Pello Phantasmo’s Book Of Brew (https://yoteland.bandcamp.com). Finally, we share a brief overview and preview of a new Weird Rap Records release, the Inner Plenum EP by Lil Ghostwriter, available on digital and vinyl picture disc at http://weirdrap.bandcamp.com, http://audiorecon.bandcamp.com, and all the usual platforms. Is all that not enough for you? Well, at Patreon there’s about a half hour’s worth of a bonus episode featuring Cambatta expanding on his psychedelic experiences, his rap influences, and comedy. It also includes Nate Patrin detailing the production advancements of Grandmaster Flash, Double D & Steinski, and Prince Paul. He also discusses the current state of leftfield hip hop journalism, and tells us what he’s been listening to lately. It’s yours for $3 at http://patreon.com/weirdrap. This episode is just a fun chat with Gary and Abby as we recap our visit to my parents in Virginia. Also Lily terrorizes the house a little bit at night. Nick returns to the figurative cohost chair, and we discuss the second week of the playoffs and look ahead to Championship Week. In addition, we discuss the Golden Globes at length, take a detour into a bodybuilding discussion, and make the BWAAAAAAMP noise from Inception a lot of times. My sincere apologies for forgetting to discuss the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category of the Golden Globes. I went out of order from my notes and I was all over the place and made many mistakes. For the record, I like Emma Thompson. In an extra special and extra long episode, I am joined by guest host John Rhoads. Of course we talk a little about Round 1 of the playoffs and look ahead to Round 2, as well as the Boose Bowl, but as one might expect, the halftime sort of takes over the show. During halftime, we talk about gratuitous Simpsons references, Pokemon Go, Advent Calendars, and some movie recommendations. No Snitch Corner even makes its triumphant (?) return. A deliberately brisker football conversation with Nick, wrapping up Week 2 and looking ahead to Week 3. Also, to keep you on your toes I have inserted a non-football segment in the middle. The Podcast Halftime concept was shamelessly stolen from the Easy Allies podcast. The theme song, as always, is an edited mix of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium from the Free Music Archive. The Podcast Halftime Theme is "Breathe" by Axl & Arth from Jamendo Music. Please send any questions or comments to podcast@fancyfantasyfootball.com. Thanks!
A relatively deep dive with Nick, recapping Week 1 and looking ahead to Week 2. Plus a surprise, totally not fake new sponsor! As always, the theme song is a modified version of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium, from the Free Music Archive. Feel free to write in with questions or comments to podcast@fancyfantasyfootball.com. Thanks!
In this mercifully short episode, Nick and Pat preview Week 1 of the FANCY Fantasy Football Season. As always, the theme song is a modified version of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium, from the Free Music Archive. Feel free to write in questions or comments to podcast@fancyfantasyfootball.com. Thanks!
An extremely long and in-depth, and mildly informed recap of the FANCY draft and a look at each team. Spoilers: most teams are "boom or bust." This episode features extensive references to DK Metcalf, some bad Chicago accent work, and frequent mispronunciation of player names (by me, not Nick). As always, the songs in the episode are from the Free Music Archive. The main theme is a mix of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium, and the waiting theme is "Elevator Succubus" by Base Cleft. Please enjoy and send all complaints to Nick. All non-complaint messages can be send to podcast@fancyfantasyfootball.com Thanks!
Jake had a spooky dream last night but can't really remember the bulk of it. But he shares the feeling he had when waking up. This weekend was also a scorcher so he talks about how sweaty he got. Always a fun topic...Music recommendations are “Antipop vs Matthew Shipp” by Antipop Consortium, and “Keep it Like a Secret by Built” to Spill.Wake & Jakehttps://www.auxchicago.com/wake-jakehttps://www.instagram.com/wakeandjakepod/https://twitter.com/WakeandJakePodJake Fisherhttps://www.instagram.com/kennyg.g.allin/https://deathbotrecords.bandcamp.com/Music Composed by Jake FisherLogo by Baitul Javid
Another fun episode with Nick, in which we talk about the obvious things--how easy it is to predict the weather, the USC coaching carousel, and cause and effect. Also we talk about the league championship and make a bet! As always, the theme song is a modified version of "Reflections" by Anti-Pop Consortium, from the Free Music Archive. Thanks for listening!

The dark abyss of the ocean is the place on Earth that we know the least about. It is populated by photo-luminescent creatures that flicker to the rhythm of their environment’s sound frequencies to produce undersea “light-shows,” a behavior that inspired the concept behind French artist Loris Greaud’s ambitious new project, developed in collaboration with Performa, MIT Sea Grant College Program, and Carnegie Mellon. This ongoing project will launch on November 19, 2009 in Abu Dhabi with breathtaking fireworks designed by the internationally acclaimed pyrotechnicians Groupe F that will recreate the bioluminescence of deep-sea creatures, featuring the experimental hip hop group Antipop Consortium. Then, the New York premiere of the video of this elemental sky sculpture, which will be recorded in HD and 35 mm, will be presented on the Times Square LED screens of News Astrovision by Panasonic, NASDAQ and Thomson Reuters as part of Performa 09.

Lyrics Born - I Like It, I Love It (Grant Phabao Remix) (Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-08-13 When Berkeley hip hop meets Jamaican reggae... Pressure keeps on rising for the upcoming releases of Grant Phabao's three (!) new albums with The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston and The Jays (on his own label T.I.M.E.C. co-run with Djouls and Captain Detendu)... The french dubmeister offers here a bouncy reggae rework of I Like It, I Love It, taken from last year's hit album Everywhere At Once (released on Quannum/ANTI). It's kind of a cousin of the N.A.S.A. remix he did earlier this year (featuring David Byrne and Chuck D.!) - all party-style with its rolling drum breaks and hookish chorus-like lyrics all along! A certified floor filler already tested and approved by fellow DJ Erik Rug at is famous WaxGroove nights. More Grant Phabao remixes to be released and/or podcasted soon for Tosca, Diesler feat. Laura Vane, Antipop Consortium, Le Damn Dog, Ocote Soul Sounds (all official ones!)... Tracklisting : 01.
