Get ready to explore the fascinating and seductive history of aphrodisiacs with renowned food historian and speaker, Francine Segan. From Cleopatra's lavish feasts of honey and figs to the Marquis de Sade's exotic culinary indulgences, the topic of aphrodisiacs has tantalized imaginations for centuries. Francine Segan will guide us through these questions and more as she traces the allure of aphrodisiacs from ancient Egypt, through the Renaissance, and into our modern kitchens. But it's not just about history. Today, you'll hear the fascinating story behind the romantic associations of champagne glasses, discover why chocolate is the ultimate Valentine's Day treat, and even learn about the recipes used by legendary lovers like Casanova to fan the flames of passion. With humor, rich historical anecdotes, and even a touch of bawdy Renaissance fun, Francine brings this provocative topic to life in a way that's as entertaining as it is enlightening. And if you've ever wondered about the foods that can inspire love—or maybe just make for an unforgettable date night—you're in for a treat. So, grab your favorite indulgence—be it chocolate, champagne, or truffles—and settle in as we dive into the seductive world of food and passion. Do You Really Know talks about love for Valentine's Day on February 14th! To understand everything about love relationships and current dating methods, we decipher together the new concepts that make love today. You've no doubt heard that certain foods can increase desire, or even improve sexual performance. Oysters, ginger, chocolate and strawberries are just a few examples of foods that supposedly have that magical effect. They're labelled aphrodisiacs, a word which comes from the name of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. There are very few scientific studies out there to back that belief up. In people who have blood circulation issues, some foods can have the same effect as Viagra, which relaxes the blood vessels and thereby improves blood flow to the genitals. Can food really have an impact on our level of sexual desire? What about alcohol? So why do people keep talking about aphrodisiacs if they don't really work? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: What is Calimero syndrome? In this episode, we're breaking down research behind aphrodisiacs, which are natural substances that supposedly help with sexual desire and/or performance! In our conversation, we break down the origin of the word aphrodisiacs and its reference to Greek mythology. We also mention evidence about “mainstream” aphrodisiacs including chocolate, alcohol, and marijuana. But to our surprise, a lot of the evidence and research led towards food alternatives and their effects on inflammation and blood flow, rather than sexual desire directly.
