English Language Special! Diese carpe diem-Episode führt uns nach England. Wir treffen unsere Gäste im Red-Bull-Podcast-Studio in Covent Garden in London. Alice Haddon ist Psychologin und Uni-Lektorin, Ruth Field ist Coach und Bestsellerautorin.Dein Liebeskummer scheint dich zu erdrücken? Du bist gefangen in Endlosschleifen? Neugierig geworden? Since leaving RADA in 2016, Jamael Westman has led productions at the Royal Court, Shakespeare's Globe and of course took on the title role of Alexander Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda's blockbuster musical in the West End's premiere cast. Now, he is starring in the National Theatre's production of London Tide, an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend by Ben Power with songs by PJ Harvey. The show is currently playing in the Lyttleton Theatre and is directed by Ian Rickson. In the show, Jamael plays Eugene Wrayburn, a character that he particular admires and feels proud to be playing alongside a delightful cast of actors that includes Peter Wight, Tom Mothersdale and Bella Maclean. In this brand new interview, Jamael Westman speaks passionately about the importance of love and empathy in a world that feels increasingly apathetic. After starring in politically themed works like Hamilton and Patriots, he tells us about how he sees being an actor as a political act too and he encourages those around him to be more empathetic and show love to others. We hear him reflect on the parallels between Dickens' London and modern London where the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen. Still, he remains positive about the world we live and shares his hope that people will come away from his latest show wanting to take action and decrease inequality. He also tells us about his desire for diversity and representation in theatre, to showcase a London which he loves and comes from in the hope more diverse talent will enter the industry as well. It's a fascinating conversation which leaves you with plenty of food for thought and we hope you enjoy listening.London Tide runs at Lyttleton Theatre, National Theatre until 22nd June.

London, and the river that runs through it, is at the heart of the new play London Tide, an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend. Ben Power has adapted the novel and co-written original songs with the singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. He tells Adam Rutherford that although it combines the savage satire and social analysis of the original, it is, in essence, a love letter to the capital. London Tide is playing at the National Theatre until 22nd June. The award-winning architect Amanda Levete reflects on the challenges of designing buildings and public spaces in major historic cities around the world – taking into consideration the aesthetics of the built environment, whilst meeting the needs of the community and tackling sustainability.Amanda Levete considers the Pompidou Centre in Paris to be one of the twentieth century's most iconic buildings and an inspiration for her own architectural practice. The journalist Simon Kuper takes stock of his adopted city, as Paris prepares for the Olympics. In Impossible City he explores today's ‘Grand Paris' project which aims to connect its much famed central areas with its neglected suburbs.Producer: Katy Hickman

Their quest takes them from fungous wine cellars in the City of London to the sunshine of the Mediterranean—across the Alps in winter. Danger and treachery would prevail were it not for the courage of the heroine and the faithful company servant. The story contains crafted descriptions, well-drawn and diverse characters, eerie and exotic backgrounds, mystery, semi-concealed identities, brinkmanship with death, romance, the eventual triumph of Good over Evil, and many other elements expected in classic Dickens.First published in 1867 there are thematic parallels with other books from Dickens' mature writings, including Little Dorrit (1857) and especially Our Mutual Friend (1865). The Listener will decide if this story yields insights into The Mystery of Edwin Drood (unfinished 1870).Wilkie Collins collaborated with Charles Dickens to produce this ‘Christmas' book and the stage play of the same name. Our Mutual Friend, the last novel completed by Charles Dickens, has many plots, twists and turns, from the murky river Thames to the gold and crystal on the tables of ‘Society'. A tale of murder, treachery, jealousy and love, takes us first to a rowing boat on the Thames, where the Hexhams have found a body in the water and are bringing it to shore. We attend the Boffins, a poor naïve couple, who unexpectedly have just become wealthy, after their employer dies and names them in his will. Silas Wegg becomes their ‘literary man' and John Rokesmith, a mysterious man, becomes their secretary. We meet the Veneerings, new to society, who hold elaborate dinner parties for ‘dear friends' they've never met. Bella and Lizzie, each from different walks of life, find love from unexpected quarters. The Lammles, a society couple, become match makers for their own ulterior motives. Two ne'er do well lawyers, Mortimer Lightwood and Eugene Wrayburn, find themselves caught up in intrigue, and learn how dangerous their work can be. Riderhood, a devious individual, finds himself in a dark plot with school teacher Bradley Headstone. Betty Higden, a loyal elderly woman, whose independence and love are so inspiring, our hearts go out to her. Dickens weaves together some of his most colorful and oft times hilarious characters so cleverly, that even up to the end of the story, surprises are afoot.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Come and share a brew with Our Mutual Friend I once heard a story that when a mobster introduces someone to another mobster they're introduced as "a friend of ours" if that person is also in the mob.  I was excited to think that Our Mutual Friend Brewery had some mob ties but, unfortunately, the name simply refers to beer being something everyone can enjoy, a mutual friend. Despite my extreme disappointment we still had an amazing conversation with Head Brewer Jan Chodkowski.  He's pretty laid back and he likes beer.  I can appreciate that.  Jan was even a good sport as we bantered about Cold IPA and my argument that it's not a real thing.  He defended talking something about the brewing methods and all that making it unique.  I'll admit he had a strong case, and he's a fan of the style. With the Great American Beer Festival coming to Denver soon Our Mutual Friend has a little party of their own planned.  Gratitude 9 is a thank you to the community and a special beer release.  Sounds like a great way to pre-game for the madness of GABF. Jan is also a fan of saisons and mixed fermentations and Brett and foeders.  He's quickly becoming our favorite person.  OMF (we can call them that now 'cause we're tight like that) used to do some spontaneous brewing but they like the results they get better with a bit more control. If you find yourself in Denver stop on by and see Our Mutual Friend.  Tell 'em we sent ya.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When your host purchased The Divine Comedy's Fin De Siècle in 1998, I couldn't quite penetrate it at the time. Listening again to the record in preparation for this conversation with Neil Hannon  I have to say, I missed out. As Hannon describes himself, the album was “a musical hallucinogen". Essentially a sombre affair in which Hannon exercises all his fascinations with troubadour influences, Scott Walker, Jacques Brel, even Charles Aznavour. Oh, and Faith No More. And why not? Despite its rather avant garde nature, the album plays host to The Divine Comedy's biggest hit and probably best known song, The National Express. Why, I wondered, would a pop star like Neil Hannon possibly be travelling around the country by coach? (you'll have to listen in for the answer). The Divine Comedy perhaps never made the ‘A List' of the 1990s British music boom. Hannon's journey was not that of Oasis, The Stone Roses or Blur, or even more kindred spirits, Pulp. But, Hannon still had three solid years of full-on fame. As he describes it:“The heights and the valleys are shallower in my experience than Suede or others. But, I looked through my old diaries recently and the difference between one year and the next - suddenly I didn't have a day to myself for the next three years. It drove me mad, but I came out the other side”. With that quote, Neil Hannon captures his very own successful recipe for longevity - namely don't get too carried away. However, that gentle roller coaster ride has rolled on, largely down to Hannon's ability to write very good songs. Those songs and Hannon's independent, self-reliance has seen The Divine Comedy mature very nicely indeed. Despite the industry's ebbs and flows since his debut album Fanfare for the Comic Muse in 1990, Hannon still gets asked to do interesting projects (writing the music for a Willie Wonka prequel), still goes on successful tours (pandemic permitting) and still gets played on the radio (now & again). I asked Neil if that really is the secret to longevity in pop music - on top of everything else - to be able to knock out great songs?“I feel like it might be. You never quite know. I sat in the control room in Abbey Road while the orchestra played their part on Our Mutual Friend. I remember thinking well, that's the best thing I've ever done. “After Regeneration [2001] I knew I had to change things or I'm doomed. I have to make the record that makes me happy. I went back to the source - pure 60s orchestral pop with layers of golden age British pop. It got me back on course. It was easier after that. To know you don't have to go looking - just do what you do - and an audience will come”. The amazing thing about bands of longevity is how new audiences keep on coming. No doubt a benefit of the streaming era, always on music, playlists and discovery algorithms. But good songs are the essential ingredient and Hannon has a bounty of them.  As a "musical entity, a singer-songwriter", Hannon is a rather distant pop star.“I'm not sure I was ever really a pop star, though at one point I did read the manual, so I knew what I was doing”.Sounds like it. Full article at https://www.songsommelier.comSupport the show

Denver's Our Mutual Friend (https://www.buyomfbeer.com) might be better known in brewing circles for their commitment to mixed-culture beers, but ask head brewer Jan Chodkowski, and he'll admit to being a hophead. It's no surprise, then, that the case of “palmares” on the brewery wall showcasing their GABF, World Beer Cup, and Craft Beer & Brewing awards is evenly split between funky farmhouse takes such as Saison Trystero and hoppy beers such as Inner Light, their Australian-style pale ale. However, their interest in experimentation doesn't end there, and they've found an enduring customer base that goes along for the ride as they regularly play in polarizing styles such as smoked beer. In this episode, Chodkowski discusses how they “toss customers into the deep end” with brash but deeply respectful takes on the farmhouse oeuvre from Northern Norway (such as their recent Stjørdalsøl dark smoked beer), a vast array of beers made with a variety of different mixed cultures, and a commitment to ingredient sourcing that informs everything they make. Chodkowski specifically addresses: Using alder wood to custom-kiln and smoke malt Mixing smoked malts for depth in smoked beer The impact of malt more than yeast in smoked farmhouse beer Shifting to pils malt to let hops shine Dry hopping just before terminal for brightness and polish Evaluating and adjusting beers as regular practice Fermenting colder with Chico yeast Using various Brett strains to build layers of flavor Using multiple commercial mixed-culture pitches for diverse blending stock, rather than a house culture Using aged hops in farmhouse beers And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): For nearly 30 years, G&D Chillers has set the mark for quality equipment you can rely on. Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com The Best German Beer in the world? OK - I'll bite.. or rather drink. According to a panel of beer experts that list includes several tasty options. I will agree with a statement made by the founder of Wynwood Brewing Co. in Miami. He likes Oktoberfest beer, regardless of the season. So do I. So no surprise Marzen made the list - but then again no surprise Hefeweisen, Helles, and Pilsners did either. Get the rundown and reasons for the inclusion of the specific beers at https://uproxx.com/life/craft-beer-experts-tell-us-their-go-to-german-beers-for-all-seasons/ I love a good #CollaBEERation and there's one coming in from Weldwerks, Our Mutual Friend, and Firestone Walker. Weldwerks and Our Mutual Friend have been teaming up for some time, for some West Coast IPA goodness… but now all three are teaming up with “Knock the Froth Off” which is Australian for “drinking beer”. It will be available in 16-ounce cans and on draft - check the link on how, where, and when. https://www.brewbound.com/news/weldwerks-brewing-our-mutual-friend-brewing-and-firestone-walker-team-up-on-collaboration-ipa And you can't just go out in January where I am without a little preparation and gear. So it goes for those venturing into Dry January, at least that's the hope of Hairless Dog Brewing who has come out with Dry January Survival Kits. The kits include a choice of the three Hairless Dog 0% ABV craft NA beer varieties and merchandise like beanie, koozies, hats, tees, and more. The kits can be yours starting around $20 and up to about $45 at HDBrewing.com Next time: What are or should people where you're from be drinking? I'll tell you tomorrow! For this episode we recorded our first collaboration episode with Jan and Jake from Our Mutual Friend and Tommy from Finn’s Manor. We discuss collaboration in general, as well as their collaboration beer, the community of the RiNo art disctrict, noodle shapes, the return of Jan to the pod, keeping things fresh, merchandise and somebody cracks the chugging leaderboard for the first time in months. Please note that we recorded this episode in the brew house, so there is some background noise. We’re comedians, not sound technicians. It’s still worth listening through.

Our Mutual Friend - Charles Dickens - Book 16, Part 2 Title: Our Mutual Friend Overview: Our Mutual Friend, written in 1864–1865, is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works, combining savage satire with social analysis. It centers on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller, quoting from the character Bella Wilfer in the book, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life". Most reviewers in the 1860s continued to praise Dickens' skill as a writer in general but did not review this novel in detail. Some found the plot both too complex and not well laid out. The Times of London found the first few chapters did not draw the reader into the characters. In the 20th century, however, reviewers began to find much to approve in the later novels of Dickens, including Our Mutual Friend. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, some reviewers suggested that Dickens was, in fact, experimenting with structure and that the characters considered somewhat flat and not recognized by the contemporary reviewers were meant rather be true representations of the Victorian working class and the key to understanding the structure of the society depicted by Dickens in the novel. His credits also include Horatio Hornblower, Luther, and the Dickens adaptation Our Mutual Friend, and he’s narrated numerous documentaries. All that said, he’s probably best known as the Eighth Doctor from Doctor Who. In the second of two episodes, Paul and I talk about working in radio/audio, the way lockdown has changed recording audio, working with Richard E. "Narratives", which used to be called "paradigms", and before that, "preconceptions", are like shackles on human necks. They force one to look down from what is before you, rather than at it. Narratives short-change reality because you either discard things that don't fit your narrative or you alter the facts in order to squeeze them in. I'm not talking about the ideological content of your narrative. (That varies from person to person.) I'm talking about the idea that we need narratives to understand what we are facing. Take the narrative couched within the statement, "You've got to go toward the cannons". In order to deal with the negativities in your life, you have to confront them directly rather than flee them or deny them. Sounds good. But here comes another narrative: "In this context there is no room for that idea." If someone is guilty of this or that objectionable action or idea, they have to be nullified, deleted. So behold: two narratives, entirely in conflict. Yet sometimes I hear the same person enunciating them both within the space of a single hour. Narratives are everywhere, and they are like heavy yokes, causing one to look down not_ at_. In my experience, only the Christian freedom of the New Creation, the New Being, is sufficient to un-yoke narratives. Only the New Being can act freely, love freely, give freely in emancipation from narratives. This is a lesson, incidentally, to be derived from Charles Dickens' (previously unknown to me) novel Our Mutual Friend. That book, by the way, is a total must. T O T A L M U S T. Oh, and talk about the New Being: Listen to the Wagnerian sounds of The Delfonics, with which this cast begins and ends. The Delfonics, together with their inspired producer Thom Bell, were not burdened by narratives, so they broke through to inspired heights. Just like the un-shackled you can.

For us, brewing beer began as an excuse to gather with our friends and ruminate on life, philosophy, music, food, and of course, beer. Once we got started, we grew more curious about the brewing process, honing our craft & experimenting with different methods & techniques. Along the way a fundamental question to our process was, how can we do more of this ourselves? Our desire to participate in every step of the grain to glass process led us to open Our Mutual Friend.Part of what we love about beer is its power to bring people together (hence our name!). We’re happy to be a gathering place in the RiNo neighborhood where locals and visitors alike can meet in camaraderie alongside a quality pint. We believe in the power of neighborly acts and the spirit of neighbors taking care of one another within the local community. We at OMF support and strive for the Denver community to know each other better and enjoy a good pint in the same process.

Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I’ve been writing for years, off and on, but I never tried writing historical fiction until I re-read Christopher Marlowe’s play Edward the Second online and became fascinated by the historical background to the play. I began researching the reign of Edward II, and when I stumbled across the story of his niece, Eleanor de Clare, I knew I had to tell her story. Her story became my novel, The Traitor’s Wife, and her eldest son’s story became my second novel, Hugh and Bess: A Love Story. I’m now working on a novel set during the Wars of the Roses.Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for.The Traitor’s Wife, set in fourteenth-century England, follows the dramatic changes in fortune of Eleanor de Clare, favorite niece of the ill-fated Edward II and the wife of Hugh le Despenser, who’s believed by many to have been Edward II’s lover. Eleanor at various times in her life was a lady in waiting to Edward II’s queen, the wife of the most powerful (and most hated) man in England, a prisoner in the Tower of London, an accused thief, and the subject of litigation between two men who each claimed to be her husband. What is your playlist?Bedrich Smetana, “The Moldau,” from Ma Vlast. This piece is a musical depiction of a river, and it reminds me of Eleanor’s uncle Edward II, who enjoyed rowing and swimming at a time when both pastimes were considered far beneath the nobility.Carl Orff's “Oh, Fortuna,” from Carmina Burana. The terrible scene where Eleanor’s first husband is executed always takes place to this piece in my head.Edward William Elgar, Enigma Variation No.9: Adagio (Nimrod). A lovely piece of music that I associate with my novel, though I can’t really explain why.Bruce Springsteen, “Rosalita” —for the scene where Eleanor elopes with her second husband.Bruce Springsteen, “Dancing in the Dark.” This was a long novel, and I love the line in this song: “I’m sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book.”There are others, but I would have to hear them on the radio to remember them. I should steal my daughter’s iPod.What does music mean to you? To your writing?I enjoy music a great deal, from rock to classical to truly awful pop, though I can’t say it has had a profound effect on me or my writing. It’s just something I like to have with me and that I would miss terribly if it wasn’t around. What kind of music do you like to write to?I don’t listen to music when I write fiction—I find that it negatively affects my concentration. Strangely, my day job with a legal publisher involves writing too, but there’s no creativity involved, so I don’t find the classical music I have in the background distracting. But with fiction, the only sound is my computer keys tapping. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack? That’s a very hard question for me to answer, because with the exception of Marie Antoinette, most of the movies I’ve seen in the last few years have been comedies. Adrian Johnston did the soundtrack for the BBC miniseries “Our Mutual Friend” about a decade ago, which I really liked, and Patrick Doyle has done the soundtrack for a number of films I’ve enjoyed. But I had to go to the Internet Movie Database to get their names—I’m not at all au courant on these matters. To learn more about Susan, visit her website.Next week, I interview author Jason Erik Lundberg.

Timothy Spall grew up in Battersea, South London. He found school pretty uninspiring and left with art as his only qualification. However, when he played the part of the Cowardly Lion in the school production of The Wizard of Oz, aged 16, he felt he had found his niche. He says "it had a good big audience and they just laughed, and when I came out to do my bow they gave me a big cheer. Something went off in my head then." He had a natural talent, and soon found a place at RADA. Within a year he was snapped up by the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he played key roles such as Andre in Chekhov's The Three Sisters, a role which he was amazed to take over from Ian McKellan. It was a huge learning period and the critics weren't going to cut him any slack just because he was straight out of drama school.
