In this episode, host David Ponraj speaks with Johnathan Holifield, published author and highly practiced economic development authority, about his book: The Future Economy and Inclusive Competitiveness. Johnathan, the Architect of Inclusive Competitiveness (™) is the former executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCU and senior vice president of Bitwise Industries, and who's now looking for his next big challenge where he can contribute to meaningful change. The two share an animated and deeply philosophical discussion about what defines and impedes economic equity and economic mobility in America. Economic mobility hinges on ownership – ownership of assets and ownership of skills. A combination of the two is the key for individuals to achieve economic equity.Johnathan shares that “the constitution protects us against racial discrimination, but doesn't protect us with economic rights.” They discuss how the “race factor” has been a crutch when attempting to understand economic inequities, and that we haven't been creative in addressing true solutions. Economic equity is hard to measure and is a difficult concept. That does not mean that it is not a critical concept worth measuring. A fascinating, deep dive conversation that chips away at the underpinnings of the wealth gap; and the previous and current superficial solutions that aren't working and may, in fact, be widening that gap. Listen in to hear their in-depth insights, challenging questions and revolutionary solutions toward achieving real, measurable economic equity and inclusive competitiveness for all.About Johnathan Holifield: Johnathan is an Innovation Economy leader, civil rights advocate and former NFL athlete. His community roles, which evolved into economic development–especially with regard to tech / innovation–are of special note, including NAACP and other civic entrepreneurial roles, which opened the door to the VP, New Economy Enterprise, Cincinnati USA Chamber of Commerce and Founding Executive. Director, CincyTech. This began his career in economic development. What makes his career unique is the hard-to-match background in traditional community development and groundbreaking leadership in tech / innovation-based economic development. It is the blending of his multidisciplinary background into an interdisciplinary career in tech / innovation economic development that is unparalleled. His interdisciplinary career fueled creation of the Inclusive Competitiveness Framework. Connect with Johnathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thetrimtabber/

Four young children were found living in a Boston Housing Authority-run (BHA) apartment filled with drag queens, “alcohol, drugs, sex toys, and a dead man,” according to reports. On Wednesday's edition of CBS's “America Decides,” CBS News Senior White House and Political Correspondent Ed O'Keefe said that there is still an issue with President Joe Biden's grandchild fathered by Hunter Biden “that the Biden family hasn't recognized and has yet to be settled as well.” But President Biden probably won't say anything more about the issue “until he's cornered by a reporter on it at some point, again, if at all.” Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, two of the world's leading tech billionaires, recently engaged in a humorous social media exchange about a potential cage fight. Zuckerberg has been training in mixed martial arts for some time now, it is unclear if Musk has any combat experience whatsoever. When Musk proposed a match, Zuck responded, “Send me location.” Bitwise Industries, the Fresno-based real estate and tech company that financially imploded a few weeks ago, is facing a number of lawsuits directed against the company itself and former co-CEOs Jake Soberal and Irma Olguin. We start the show discussing Philip's trip on Friday & high school graduations. After initiating a company-wide furlough of its employees, Bitwise Industries released an update. Bitwise officials announced their decision to terminate co-CEOs Jake Soberal and Irma L. Olguin Jr. and appointed Ollen Douglass as interim president, effective June 1, 2023. The salacious pitch by Bitwise's former co-CEO to convince Central Valley-based business leaders to dole out millions in hard money loans wasn't merely backed by incredible rates of return, but bolstered by the notion that the loans were safe due to an impending investment from Goldman Sachs. The problem? The investment didn't exist. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Peter and Ray discuss how Bitwise Industries has not paid business taxes to the City of Fresno since September 2021, according to a letter released by the City of Fresno on Wednesday. The two dig deep on the topic. A letter from Mayor Jerry Dyer and addressed to founders Jake Soberal and Irma Olguin, Jr., reveals that “Bitwise-related entities have not reported any gross receipts nor paid City business taxes since September of 2021.” The letter requests accounting documents to be sent to the City Controller within 30 days of receipt of the letter threatening “further action against Bitwise and its Board of Directors” if it is not received. Growing up in a farming and agriculture community, Irma Olguin Jr. never imagined a life and career in tech. Taking the PSAT as a sophomore and being offered a scholarship to attend college in Ohio completely changed the trajectory of Irma's life. Inspired by her own story of opportunity and life changing decisions, Irma has made it her life's work to positively affect and change the lives of people from underserved communities through tech with Bitwise Industries. The idea of Bitwise was hatched in 2012 over a Red Bull (hers) and a gin and tonic (his) with her then IP attorney, Jake Soberal. Fueled by a series of aha moments, they decided they were in a unique position to build such a mechanism for progress. At Bitwise, Irma oversees the screening and interviewing of all employment candidates and apprentices, including that of Bitwise Workforce Training and Bitwise Technology Services. Her goal is to ensure Bitwise always remains faithful to its mission of strengthening Fresno's tech industry and turning it into a driver of real economic progress. Previously, Irma created 59DaysOfCode, a competition highlighting and encouraging the Valleyʼs tech industry. She co-founded Hashtag, an open co-workspace for designers and developers alike. She also co-founded Edit LLC to solve efficiency and data issues in the ag industry. Irma holds a degree in computer science and engineering from University of Toledo, Ohio and has been a contributing advisor on several community boards, including 59DaysOfCode, President's Advisory Board for California State University – Fresno, the American Red Cross (Central Valley Chapter), Kingsview Behavioral Health, and Youth Leadership Institute. Her dog, Bruce, is the king of her world and is widely recognized as the mascot for Bitwise Industries. Author of The Future Economy and Inclusive Competitiveness: How Demographic Trends and Innovation Can Create Economic Prosperity for All Americans. Former NFL Player's Book Says Inclusive Competitiveness is Key to Future U.S. Economic Prosperity
Johnathan Holifield spent many years deeply involved in neighborhood and community development work without really moving the needle until he discovered the game-changing nature of the innovation economy. “The stuff we were doing was good work, but we were focused on largely inelastic career opportunities versus what you find in the tech sector and innovation economy, which are elastic opportunities that really give you social and economic mobility.” As senior vice president of New Economies at Bitwise Industries, he's now in a position to help what he calls disconnected populations gain access to the best options for economic advancement, and do so on an increasingly national scale. Bitwise, which started in Fresno, California in 2013, helps marginalized communities obtain the skills and resources necessary to access opportunities in the tech industry. Apprenticeships are key to its model and Bitwise is now the largest tech apprenticeship provider in the United States. Check out this illuminating episode of WorkforceRx as Futuro Health CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan explores how Bitwise is bringing its successful formula of workforce development, technology consulting and creating great community spaces to seven states and counting.
In this episode of The Forum Podcast Irma Olguin Jr. (Bitwise Industries) and Michelle Skoor (Bitwise Industries) explores how the tech industry could use paid apprenticeships to approach systemic inequities in the tech industry and curb generational poverty. The tech industry has a workforce shortage and a major problem with the lack of diversity within its ranks. If companies look for talent in new places, they will find many people from underserved communities to fill these roles. The challenge is that many of these people can't access the education needed to enter the industry. So how do we upskill people who can't afford traditional training programs? The simple answer is: Pay them to learn. Using the budget for existing IT projects, companies can instead build apprenticeship programs or work with firms that leverage apprentices to build the software. This allows people, who would otherwise have no way to afford training, to acquire hands-on technical experience. Tech, as one of the fastest-growing industries, has the ability to change the lives of some of the most vulnerable in the U.S. When the tech industry leverages apprenticeship programs, people who were trapped in poverty have access to high-wage, high-growth jobs. Learning Outcomes Understand how companies that use apprentices benefit the most from the arrangement See how having a diverse workforce leads to innovation and is a competitive advantage Learn that apprentices can build infrastructure for outdated IT platforms while escaping systemic poverty --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fwi/support

placemakingpodcast@gmail.com Facebook-f Twitter Linkedin Instagram Providing Access to Technologies Through Investing in Communities with Bryan & Alex – Ep. 50 About the Guest I am extremely excited to share this next conversation with all of you. Today on the show I have Bryan Feil and Alex Jones of Bitwise Industries. Bryan Feil serves as the VP of Real Estate Development at Bitwise Industries, overseeing the coworking, building development, and hospitality teams. Bryan assistants in locating, designing, and identifying architectural partners for each Bitwise Real Estate project. He especially enjoys being able to help Bitwise's city expansion projects and revitalizing downtowns through growth and development. Bryan Feil grew up in Bakersfield, CA with the desire to use business as a tool to impact lives. That passion took its first form in co-founding and developing Neighborhood Industries, an organization focused on operating businesses that reveal value in people so that they can be positive contributors to their community. Alex has seven years of experience in the Civil Engineering industry. He has worked on water & wastewater treatment projects, residential subdivisions while working as an Assistant Engineering for consulting firms located within the Central Valley of California. Currently, Alex works for Bitwise Industries as a Project Manager for the Real Estate Development Team. Day-to-day activities include defining and tracking project scopes, schedules, and budgets to meet project targets. He also monitors progress and coordinates work with architects, contractors, and engineers. Since July 1, 2013, the day they opened Bitwise Mural District, they've focused on connecting humans from marginalized communities and stories of systemic poverty to skills and resources necessary to access opportunities in the tech industry. They do this through their three main pillars which include Bitwise Real Estate, Bitwise Technology Consulting, and Bitwise Workforce Training. This company has an interesting business model. I would highly recommend you learn more about their work by finding them online at bitwiseindustries.com. In this episode, we are going to discuss how their campus projects help to fulfill the mission of Bitwise, a behind-the-scenes look into the criteria they use when evaluating potential projects, and how to build excitement in the surrounding community for your upcoming project. There is loads of great information in this episode and I greatly appreciated Bryan and Alex for taking the time out of their extremely busy schedules to discuss this topic of providing access to technologies by investing in communities with me. As always, if you have enjoyed the show, please subscribe to the show and share it with your friends in the industry. There will be more exciting conversations on the shows to come. Main Take-Away's From This Show This was another fun episode to record. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Bryan and Alex's experience at Bitwise. It's fun to hear how two seemingly very different individuals can team up to make really cool things happen in these communities through Bitwise Industries. Some might say that the lack of formal training has actually been their greatest asset when tackling these projects. They don't take anything for granted and ask tons of questions. This mindset will take them a long way with Bitwise. There were so many great talking points that Bryan and Alex made throughout the discussion, so it is hard to just pick three for my main take-away's this week. The following main topics of the show come from an understanding of placemaking that they both possess. 1. How to Build Excitement and Connection with the Surrounding Community with your Project2. Who said Older Buildings aren't Exciting3.

Coworking spaces were one of the communities hit hardest by COVID-19 leaving them to completely reinvent almost everything about their business and community. Our guest today, Sal Lucatero, was put to the test when it came to finding ways to still add value to members who could no longer attend their in-person C2C events. He adapted their NPLH festival to be completely virtual with creative workarounds like sending food from vendors, having a dance party virtually, adding in interaction that possible online. These things actually ADDED to the experience instead of taking it strictly online, making the event a huge success. Who is this episode great for? In-person community events, mid-stage community leaders, B2B communities What's the biggest takeaway? Don't just put your existing C2C events online, how can you add to the experience? Is there a way to send food or other items to attendees? Can you involve more engagement through things like polls and breakout rooms? Can you invite a DJ or other musician? Re-think every aspect of your event to find ways to make it stand out in a sea of zoom events.
