My guest today is Andre Maciel, founder of the Brazilian venture capital firm Volpe Capital, whose current and former portfolio includes the likes of Vtex, CRM&Bonus, Connectly, and Atlas Governance. Before starting Volpe, André was the founding managing investment partner at SoftBank Latin America, and prior to that, he spent nearly 17 years in investment banking and private equity at JP Morgan. This is a special conversation where we dive into the evolution of startup investing in Brazil and Latin America, unpack various exit strategies, and set realistic return expectations for portfolio managers. We also explore AI's transformative role in boosting productivity, particularly in sectors like tax prep and automation. Finally, we discuss why LATAM is such a hotbed for innovation, offering tech giants like Google and Meta an incredible $700 billion market opportunity. In today's episode we discuss: 1. AI's Big Bet: why the application of AI is a critical factor in unlocking productivity in Latin America?  2. The $700B question for Meta, Google and ByteDance: why Brazil is big tech's most wanted market? 3. The 2021 exit gap: how LATAM VCs missed a golden opportunity to deliver LP returns? 4. The path forward: How can Latin America cultivate a robust local LP market? 5. LATAM vs. Silicon Valley: What sets their founders apart? Today's Post - https://bahnsen.co/4bqijHA Markets traded modestly higher following global markets, particularly China, where broad indices closed higher by over 3%. Markets in China have given up over $7T in market value since peaking in March of 2021, and last night's move had less to do with actual news than I think it just did with an oversold bounce on potential stimulus. I do suspect there will be more from the government there to stimulate the economy and a severely over-levered real estate market sooner rather than later. Slower growth in China, means less Yuan to recycle back in US Treasuries, as that share of ownership continues to decline. There are still plenty of long-dated liabilities that need to be funded domestically with pensions and insurance companies and the like, but the supply this year will be massive with $8.9T in maturing Treasuries. Add on another $1T or more in deficits, and we will need to see over $10T absorbed in markets this year. This, along with the fact that government interest payments have already doubled from $350B in 2021 to now $700B, just has me skeptical that the Fed will continue to sell $60B a month with QT for a whole lot longer. It was less of a data-driven market day, other than a host of Fed President comments, which I will sum up to effectively ‘…yeah, what he said…' reiterating Powell's Fed policy comments last week about more time needed with rates. Gas is now averaging $3.99 per gallon down from $5.01 55 days ago. 1C) The Strategic Petroleum Reserve which was at 638M barrels when Biden took office will be down to $384M barrels by 9-30. A 40% reduction. Capacity is 714M barrels. 1D) Jobless claims rise to 262K, highest in 8 months. A bubble-blowing, bull market, blow-off top phase - Cody Willard joins Alpha Trader

Alpha Trader

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 5, 2021 39:21 Transcription Available

This week’s Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher speaking with Cody Willard, hedge fund manager and editor of Trading With Cody. “Please be selective with your trades,” Willard recently wrote, calling the current action a “bubble-blowing, bull market, blow-off top phase.” He takes note of recent massive moves in what are otherwise penny stocks, as well as the SPAC IPO frenzy. Those words don’t come easy to Willard, who has been mostly bullish for about a decade, but now describes himself as a cautious net seller of equities. Certainly no penny stock, but surely a sign of the times, Tesla (TSLA) was up big again on Monday even as the major averages sharply sold off. Willard has owned the stock for much of its run higher, and still believes in the transformative nature of the company. Marveling that nothing seems to ever shake the shares, Willard continues to hold the stock, but wonders how much more upside there can be from the current $700B market cap. Turning to what might be some other bubbly action, Willard’s been an owner of Bitcoin (BTC-USD) for many years, but feels it’s gotten ahead of itself. He thinks the most recent big run higher may have come at the expense of investors selling gold (XAUUSD:CUR) to buy the crypto (which has taken on the nickname of “gold 2.0”). A reversal may be in order, says Willard, adding that the SPDR Gold ETF (GLD) is one of his favorite positions right now. Appearing on Alpha Trader almost exactly one year ago, Willard was excited about the multi-trillion dollar opportunity in space exploration. He remains so, but the pure-play publicly traded vehicles are slim, with Virgin Galactic (SPCE) and Stable Road Acquisition (SRAC) - which is merging with space travel company Momentus - maybe the two most well known. He’s most bullish and owns a stake in still-private SpaceX (SPACE), believing the company might be worth $1T if public. Alas, Willard doesn’t expect Elon Musk to ever make that move, given some of the regulatory headaches he’s dealt with at Tesla. There’s plenty more, including a discussion of a still-private 3D printing rocket company, why Apple (AAPL) remains an exciting long, and host Aaron Task making a great elevator pitch for getting long the roughed-up dollar (USDOLLAR). How do you maintain business as usual as much as possible is the question I am asking myself every day. We all can agree.. the last seven days were surreal. The next 7, 14, 21 will be as well. Making sure I have the most up to date information during this time has become even more important, and how I am staying grounded. Last night a member of the Federal Reserve Board, stated that the biggest lesson learned from 2008 was that the Federal Reserve did not act fast enough. We have seen them in action already. They threw everything they had at the problem last weekend dropping the Fed rate to zero and adding another $700B in purchases after committing to $1.5T the week before. This morning they announced they are going limitless. YEP .. you heard that right. Spending as much as it takes to keep businesses and governments afloat through purchasing treasuries, mortgage-backed securities, commercial securities (ie. multifamily), corporate bonds, and muni bonds. Let's deal with inflation later... game on! ----more---- Colorado Governor Polis came out last night saying Colorado was going to do business as usual as much as possible as well. Not putting us into a Shelter in Place, but mandate all essential businesses thin their workforce by half. I agree and had already sent my team to work from home last week. We are also seeing FHFA stand up where needed. They announced last week that they had rolled out mortgage forbearance. Today they announced workaround for appraisals through desk appraisals and drive-bys. Workaround for Verification of Employment has opened up to personal cell phones for HR department contacts, emails from company domains, most recent paychecks and/or bank statements to show income. Title companies are also getting creative with buyers bringing their own laptops and signing in their car. We are all getting creative in this time of disruption... to maintain the dream of homeownership! Stay tuned as I send out more regular updates. And give us a call if you want to know what this means to you! Our team is ready to not only keep you informed but support you! Over the weekend, the Fed decided it couldn’t wait for Wednesday’s planned meeting to act, cutting interest rates to nearly 0%. It also announced $700 billion of direct capital injection through the purchase of Treasury securities and mortgage-backed debt. The question is whether this action can actually calm markets? So far, it’s not looking great. Within minutes, emergency circuit breakers were triggered again. Markets are down more than 9% on the day. In this episode, @NLW chats with CoinDesk’s Chief Content Officer Michael Casey and director of research Noelle Acheson about:Why the market isn’t impressed with Fed actionWhy no Fed response will be enough on its own to solve the health crisis and the resulting economic dislocationWhy we’re going to see more conversations in the coming weeks about UBI, MMT and other direct citizen stimulus

Here's our first episode of Blitz Talk - where we have short digestible conversations about the current state of the economy.Living in the COVID-19 WorldHow does the Government respond?Monetary Policy - Fed cuts rate to 0 - 0.25%- Fed buys $700B worth of securities to provide liquidity to repo markets- The Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve, and the Swiss National Bank are today announcing a coordinated action to enhance the provision of liquidity via the standing U.S. dollar liquidity swap line arrangements. Reduce Fiscal Policy - Previous measures such as the Bush Economic Stimulus Act of 2008.Tax rebates created by the law were paid to individual U.S. taxpayers during 2008. Most taxpayers below the income limit received a rebate of at least $300 per person ($600 for married couples filing jointly). This idea is not uncommon with Andrew Yang famously putting forward his Universal Basic Income (UBI) plan which includes a $1000/month stipend for low income families. The overwhelming virtue of UBI is its simplicity. Summary Delayed gratification is putting off what you’d like to have today to achieve your major goals tomorrow. Every major personal or societal goal demands a high degree of delayed gratification. And you can subscribe to the podcast on your favorite device through Apple Podcasts, Google, or Stitcher. Transcript Most of the solutions to the issues we face personally and as a society are pretty straightforward. But hard to implement, requiring, among other things, delayed gratification. Most of us don’t want that for ourselves, and we have let our politicians know it. They know they cannot vote for any solutions that require any kind of delayed gratification, because we will not re-elect them if they do. And nothing gets fixed. Nothing gets done. A Stanford professor conducted an experiment with 4- and 5-year-olds and marshmallows. He put a marshmallow in front of each kid, saying if they waited for 15 minutes, while he was gone, before eating the marshmallow, they could have a second one. If they ate it, that was it. One now, or two in 15 minutes. A few of the children made it and were tracked over the 40-years of this longitudinal study. Not surprisingly, this group had higher SAT scores, lower levels of abuse and obesity and achieved higher levels of overall success in life. The discipline of delayed gratification works. Many of us as individuals and our society, our government, are eating the marshmallow. The government, which we get to vote on every two years, continues to back away from advocating the delayed gratification that it would take to solve any one of the many the issues facing our nation today. National debt, you know, the one we continue to amass and leave to our children and grandchildren. Essentially, we are eating our marshmallow and theirs, leaving them without one. As of the moment, the Federal accounting shows that we owe $21T and it’s mounting fast. Part of that debt is the money we owe to support Social Security. Life expectations have increased by at least 15 years since its inception, and we continue to add types of recipient and increase the amount paid to those recipients. Yet instead of fixing it, changing the rules so that it will be solvent and lasting, we continue to kick the can down the road. Afraid of even talking about delayed gratification. Another part of why we are broke and getting broker is Medicaid, which has gone from $200B in 2000, to $600B last year. And it, too, is growing rapidly. And then there is Medicare. We spent $700B in 2017, and are projected to spend $3T on Medicare alone in 2050. Yet there are calls from seemingly rational people for “Medicare for all!” Free College. The national cry for free college and forgiven student loans is mounting. But there is no national conversation about working harder to get scholarships, going to a local community college while working 30 hours a week for those first two years, not going to that expensive dream school. And there are no thoughts or advice about spending 30 minutes on Google to see which schools offer the degrees that will pay enough so the graduate can find a well-paying job and meet their post-school debt obligations. Here, by demanding free college, we eating someone else’s marshmallow. Infrastructure. We all know that our roads and bridges are suffering from lack of extensions even proper maintenance. Why aren’t we fixing them? The politicians believe that if they talk about anything even remotely related to delayed gratification, they won’t get re-elected and their party will suffer. They are right about that, and that’s our fault. They think that because that is how we vote. For example,

November 15, 2011 Today’s episode features an impressive lineup for a hot topic. Host Dr. Tim Cripe warns: “If your blood isn’t boiling by the end, you weren't listening.” Hear Tim and co-host Dr. Lionel Chow discuss pediatric cancer research funding with guests Dr. C. Patrick (Pat) Reynolds, Dr. E. Anders (Andy) Kolb, and parent Joe McDonough. Dr. Pat Reynolds puts government spending on the number one disease killer of children in the US in perspective, comparing the tiny $200M spent on pediatric cancer research to the foreign aid budget of $22B (less than 1%). For example, $1.6B goes to Egypt alone. The COG budget is a mere $46M. The DOD budget is $700B. See his slides here. Dr. Lionel Chow mentions an enlightening fact – private donations to St Jude exceed $600M per year, on top of the givers’ paying taxes. This is 3 times the entire NCI budget for pediatric cancer research for all institutions in the US. Spending per Person Years Life Lost is compared for childhood cancers and adult cancers, see graph here. Dr. C Patrick Reynolds is Director, Cancer Center and Professor of Cell Biology & Biochemistry, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock TX. Dr. E Anders Kolb is the Director of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, and Head of the Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory at Nemours Biomedical Research, Wilmington, DE. Joe McDonough is father to Andrew, and founder of The Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation, raising money for families and research. Please send comments to twipo@solvingkidscancer.org

Barack Obama pledges $700B public works plan to help economy by Peter Wallsten http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-obama-stimulus_5sdec07,0,3049287.story Drunken sailer extraordinaire Best way to make federal buildings "energy efficient" is to close them down Obama sees 2.5 million more governmental jobs in our future, for starters Your Monday Message from the Libertarian Party: The LP Goes to Harvard, posted by Andrew Davis http://www.lp.org/blogs/andrew-davis/the-lp-goes-to-harvard Digging holes and filling them back up...all via extorted wealth The MO of government: distribute the costs and concentrate the benefits In order for government to refrain from intervening in the marketplace, it must disintegrate and disappear Government is nothing other than a coercively funded and arbitrarily imposed organization Government, being a parasite on the economy, doesn't make anything; it acquires money via extortion To "stimulate" an economy through coercion is evil Government isn't fit for a society of rational and respectful people, so it must be abolished No one, including those working in "government" have the right to impose a service at the barrel of a gun World's Shortest Political Quiz  by Marc Stevens http://www.adventuresinlegalland.com/index.php?/content/view/88/33/ Win Every Political Argument by Marc Stevens http://www.adventuresinlegalland.com/index.php?/content/view/89/33/ Some people disingenuously assert that governmental employees don't impose their "services" at gunpoint; compliance isn't voluntary, as innocent people thrown in governmental cages can attest As long as slaves remain obedient, their masters treat them well Keynesians (statist economists) believe in the meme of authoritarian sociopathy writ large--that the State is legitimate and all-powerful; mystical God is to the believer as mystical Government is to the statist "Public property" just invites boondoggles, among other sordid things The collectivistic term "national debt" has no validity and must be repudiated Even though persons such as Milton Friedman have tried, one can't rationally perform a "cost/benefit ratio" on the use of coercion, which is forcing people to do things against their wills http://www.logicallearning.net/libcapitalismpol.html (search for choice quote by Friedman) You wouldn't allow people to force you against your will if they didn't call themselves "government," would you? The crimes committed with impunity by those in government are the same ones that those in government prohibit private individuals from perpetrating (assault, battery, kidnapping, theft, extortion, counterfeiting, murder, etc.) Obama has chosen to be the head of a coercive organization, an organization of people who treat others in an involuntary fashion, an organization of people who rely on propaganda, pr, and widespread obedience to maintain the illusion of legitimacy There shouldn't be political parties or a republic form of government; there should just be the free market, filled with enterprising entrepreneurs who ensure people's rights if need be (justice agencies http://www.logicallearning.net/liblegalagencies.html ) We shouldn't aim for "smaller government, lower taxes, and more freedom" We should aim for no government, no taxes, and complete liberty bumper music "Highway To Hell" by ACDC http://www.acdc.com/ to comment, please go to http://completeliberty.com/magazine/category/91697
