A rail town bar with a brothel upstairs. A mob-friendly speakeasy with a basement meant for settling scores. A fire that nearly erased it all—and a renovation that seemed to wake the house. We head to the Old Baraboo Inn in Wisconsin to pull the thread on a history that refuses to fade and the hauntings that line up a little too neatly with the past.We start with the Inn's origins and its connection to Chicago via the rail line, then move into the Prohibition years: poker downstairs, liquor flowing, enforcers on duty, and an execution pole that still bears scars. From there, we follow the 1988 blaze, the decade of silence, and BC Farr's painstaking rebuild that reopened the doors in 2002 and, by many accounts, stirred the spirits. From the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries, the Venetian government attempted to control commercial sex by segregating it in municipal brothels in Rialto and later by minimizing the public's contact with sex workers, limiting their profits, and cracking down on recruitment. These decentralized efforts proved ineffective, and women who performed this labor lived and worked throughout the city. This book traces the diffusion of sex work from the brothels to the alleys, gondola landings, taverns, bathhouses, and peripheral squares of Venice. We covered this historic and famous brothel back on Ep. 120 in 2016. This is one of the few haunted locations we have found in Montana and it is located in Butte. The town has its roots in mining and was known as the "Richest Hill on Earth." Gold, silver and copper were all mined here. As was the case with so many mining towns, a successful red light district grew within the town. One of the most successful and high-class brothels in town was the Dumas Brothel. Rich clientele could have their fantasies met here, but there was also pleasure for the working class in the basement, which ran like a sex mill. The brothel passed through many hands and has the reputation of being the longest running brothel in the country. And it seems that clients and the girls are still hanging out here in the afterlife. Tango usually evokes images of a very regal couple: a man in a suit and a woman in a tight red dress, embraced in sensual moves. But the reality of the quintessential Argentinian music genre is strikingly different. Tango, in fact, was born in the brothels and dance halls of Buenos Aires’ lower cast and is rooted in Argentina’s African and queer subcultures. In this episode we’ll take you on a journey through tango’s history. It was first condemned by the elites and the Catholic church, threatened by the worldwide phenomenon of rock n’ roll, and buried by Argentina’s last military dictatorship. But then, in the 1980s and 1990s, it saw a revival. More recently, it’s being reclaimed by the very marginalized communities that first embraced it.
