Catherine Austin Fitts, former assistant secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George H.W. Bush, recently commented on how the US Government is responsible for $21-Trillion in “unauthorized spending” between 1998 and 2015 alone. This was documented by Mark Skidmore of Michigan State University in 2017. Catherine believes much of it went into “underground base and city infrastructure and transportation systems” that have already been built. A Washington Post article in 2010 documented the Hidden World of a massively complex national security and intelligence network infrastructure built across the country in the wake of 911. But that's only part of it, and only encompasses the decade between 2001 and 2010 - not to mention the $2.3-Trillion announced missing one day before 911 and the justification to build this infrastructure. It doesn't include the half a century of public and private construction projects for military command centers like NORAD at Cheyenne Mountain or VIP bunkers under Greenbrier Resort. Some of this is for military control, others for continuity of government, and still others for laboratories perhaps akin to the Hive, or simply for nuclear material storage. In fact NASA just found a decommissioned facility in Greenland that was home to Camp Century and Project Iceworm. All of this spending coupled with authorized military spending adds up to over half of the country's national debt. Many of these bunkers, command centers, facilities, etc., have price tags that in order to add up to the unauthorized trillions must be beyond vast, they must be numerous beyond what we can conceive. And these facilities are worldwide, likely under the ocean as much as they are buried into mountains. The wealthy are also building their own bunkers toady, some of which are luxury facilities. Then there are facilities built right under our feet and meant for flood preparations, like the G-Cans in Tokyo. There are also reports of odd booms and explosions hear around the world for several decades. Some is probably atmospheric, part is geological, and others are possible a result of these projects. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Camp Century was a US military base that was used for less than a decade in the 1960s. Now? It's all but a memory. William Colgan, a glacier and climate change researcher, currently in Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of the Camp Century Climate Monitoring Program, joins the show to discuss it.

Camp Century, a 1960s US Army base embedded in the Greenland ice sheet, was not only a High Arctic test site for advanced technologies—including a modular nuclear reactor—and secret military schemes at the height of the Cold War, but also a seminal location for the extraction of ice cores that would become an important baseline for modern climate science. Associate professor Kristian H. Nielsen of Aarhus University, who-coauthored a definitive account of this fascinating chapter of Cold War history, “Camp Century: The Untold Story of America's Secret Arctic Military Base Under the Greenland Ice” (Columbia University Press, 2021), joins the podcast to discuss this audacious geostrategic initiative and its enduring afterlife that has continued to complicate Denmark-US-Greenland relations for over 60 years.
In 1960, the US finished construction on the world's most advanced arctic research laboratory... A few years later, the world discovered that it was all a cover story. Worse, it was a cover story for a failed project and that was just the tip of the iceberg because buried under all that ice and snow, was a ticking time bomb. In 1959, the United States built an unusual military base under the surface of the Greenland ice Sheet. Camp Century was a hub for scientific research, but it also doubled as a top-secret site for testing the feasibility of deploying nuclear missiles from the Arctic. When Camp Century was decommissioned in 1967, its infrastructure and waste were abandoned under the assumption they would be forever entombed beneath the colossal sheet of ice. But climate change has warmed the Arctic more than any other region on Earth, and parts of the Greenland Ice Sheet are melting faster than snow can accumulate. What will happen in the coming decades if the melting ice exposes the biological, chemical, and radioactive waste left behind at Camp Century? As part of our Staff Picks series while Third Pod is on break, University of Colorado Boulder glaciologist Mike MacFerrin recounts Camp Century's intriguing history and its role in the Cold War. He discusses the potential hazard Camp Century's waste poses to the environment and surrounding communities and examines what, if anything, should be done about it now. This episode was produced and mixed by Lauren Lipuma and Shane M Hanlon.
Cold war secrets buried deep in the ice and forgotten, plus reanimating frozen life from Siberia. How could some frozen dirt, forgotten in a freezer for decades help us understand a future of rising sea levels? Greenland's name was a marketing stunt by Erik the Red, but it was once truly covered in greenery. Although Greenland is so close to the North Pole, all it's thick sheets of ice have completely melted (geologically) recently. How did scientists reanimate ancient animals buried in the Siberian Tundra? Rotifers can live in some unusual places, but they can also survive being frozen and brought back to life. Ancient animals have been 'unfrozen' and brought back to life though they are very small. Under A Mile Of Ice, A Climate Clue Scientists studying sediment taken from a core sample of the Greenland ice sheet just 800 miles from the North Pole have found remnants of ancient plants, freeze-dried under more than a mile of ice. Using several different dating techniques, they say the soil, twigs, and leaves date to sometime within the last million years—probably on the order of several hundred thousand years ago—a time when Greenland’s massive ice cap did not exist. The finding that the ice sheet may have been missing so recently in geologic time provides clues to the stability of the ice, and just how sensitive it might be to modern global warming. The samples themselves have an unusual history. In the 1960s, the US Army set out to build a base under the surface of the ice in Greenland. Ostensibly, the outpost, named Camp Century, was to be used for research into polar conditions, and how best to work in them. In reality, the US also hoped to secretly bury nuclear missiles under the ice cap within close reach of the Soviet Union. As part of that effort, codenamed Project Iceworm, core samples were taken of the ice and sediment. Year later, those samples would become the basis for this climate study, reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Drew Christ, one of the authors of that report and a geologist at the University of Vermont, joins Ira to talk about the study, and explain what ancient dirt can teach us about the future climate. Decrypting Big Tech’s Data Hoard The era of Big Data promised large-scale analytics of complex sets of information, harnessing the predictive power of finding patterns in the real world behaviors of millions of people. But as new documentaries like The Social Dilemma, Coded Bias, and other recent critiques point out, the technologies we’ve built to collect data have created their own new problems. Even as powerhouses like Google says it’s done tracking and targeting individual users in the name of better advertising, educational institutions, housing providers, and countless others haven’t stopped. Ira talks to two researchers, mathematician Cathy O’Neil and law scholar Rashida Richardson, about the places our data is collected without our knowing, the algorithms that may be changing our lives, and how bias can creep into every digital corner. The Rainbow Connection—To Physics You may have seen a double rainbow, but did you know there are moonbows at night, and even white rainbows? And did you know, if we stood next together to watch a rainbow, the colors we see are coming from two different sets of droplets in a rain shower. That means each of us have our own unique rainbow. This all has to do with the optics, physics, and atmospheric science, which Steven Businger studies at the University of Hawaii Mānoa. Rainbows have captured many people’s attention (including Ira’s! Check out the cover of his book featuring rainbow science below). There is equally fascinating physics responsible for those multicolor beams, which Businger describes in a recent study published in Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. Businger talks about the science behind rainbows, and discusses why Hawaii might be the rainbow capital of the world.

Camp Century. We talk about the discourse of the “New Arctic” and its geopolitical implications, the Inuit experience of climate change, self-government and the extractivist politics of the new Greenlandic resource frontier, and the sharpened global gaze resting on Greenland at the moment. Mark tells us about the adaptive resilience of indigenous lifeways in the face of climate change and advancing industrialization and urbanization in the parts of Greenland where he has done fieldwork for decades. We touch on the dramatic changes the Greenlandic capital Nuuk is now experiencing and the tensions between the aspirations to Greenlandic state sovereignty and the Inuit Circumpolar Council and then close with the fascinating stories of Camp Century and Project Iceworm.
In this second episode of the series, "Cold War on Ice," we will go under the Greenland Icecap and explore the Army's snowbase Century and its bid for relevance in the race between branches.
In 1961—the year before he became the anchorman for CBS News—Walter Cronkite visited Camp Century, an unusual military compound on the Greenland ice sheet. Carved under the snow and ice, Camp Century had a main street and prefab housing for 250 soldiers and scientists—all powered by a pint-sized nuclear reactor.
In this episode, University of Colorado Boulder glaciologist Mike MacFerrin recounts Camp Century’s intriguing history and its role in the Cold War. He discusses the potential hazard Camp Century’s waste poses to the environment and surrounding communities and examines what, if anything, should be done about it now.
From sugary snow cones to WWII plans for an aircraft carrier made of ice and wood pulp, humans have had big dreams for frozen water. So this week, we’re exploring the science of snow and ice across the globe. Turns out, there are ancient refrigerators in the dry Iranian desert and abandoned military bases under the Greenland ice sheet. And even though Japanese snow monkeys seem all cozy and chill in their hot springs, what mischief do they get up to in their free time? Producent: Thomas Hedemann.

Ever since the American Boy Scouts were organized, the U.S. Army has been one of its best friends and chief boosters. This, segments of audio from “The Big Picture” with John Daly as host-narrator, shows us a few of the things the Army has done for the Scouts and some of the things the Scouts have done for the Army. Some of the finest opportunities for American youth to meet and know the youth of other countries have come about through scout get togethers supported by members of our armed forces both here and abroad. One of the highlights of this film is the story of two Scouts, one an American and the other a citizen of Denmark, spending the long winter night as active members of Camp Century, the nuclear-powered military research center which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has recently built deep under the frozen surface of Greenland.
