Ein Podcast vom Pragmaticus.Das Thema:Was werden Sie in diesem Podcast hören? „Eine bizarre Geschichte“, so fasst es Horst Machguth zusammen. Der Glaziologe an der Universität Lausanne hat sie 2016 publik gemacht: Es geht um eine verlassene Militärbasis auf Grönland. Camp Century in der Arktis lag einmal tief im Firn Grönlands vergraben. Die US-Militärbasis sollte nach dem Sputnikschock im Oktober 1957 eine Bastion gegen die Sowjetunion sein und war für die Zukunft gemacht. Diese Zukunft ist jetzt da, und sie ist anders als die Erbauer glaubten. Das Eis schmilzt, und die Stadt unter dem Eis gleitet unaufhaltsam in das Nordpolarmeer. Eine tödliche Fracht voller Schwermetalle, Altöl und radioaktivem Abfall.Camp Century wurde schon 1967 aufgegeben, der Kalte Krieg hatte neue Technologien und Wege gefunden. Schon zu Beginn der Grabungen war klar, dass der Firn keine Stollen trägt, dass die Idee mit den Abschussrampen im Eis nicht funktioniert. Es lohnt die Frage: Wie konnte es zu einer derartigen Fehleinschätzung der Folgen kommen? Antworten geben: Horst Machguth, der Glaziologe, der die Welt als Erster über das Vermächtnis von Camp Century informierte; Jakob Abermann, ein Meteorologe und Gletscherforscher, der das Schicksal des Eisschilds auf Grönland erforscht und Heinz Gärtner, Politologe und Experte für den Kalten Krieg.Camp Century liegt etwa 240 Kilometer östlich der Thule Airbase (Pittufik), das ist jene, die der Vizpräsident der USA, J.D. Vance, Ende März 2025 besuchte. Für die Thule Airbase wurden die ursprünglichen Bewohner zwangsumgesiedelt, von Uummannaq (Thule) in das neu gegründete Qaanaaq.Gebraucht hat man die Militär-Basis im Firn nie. Sie war eine reine Cover-Aktion. Doch auch als solche war sie schon überflüssig, bevor sie fertig war.Unsere Gäste in dieser Folge: Jakob Abermann ist Meteorologe und forscht an der Universität Graz am Institut für Geographie und Raumforschung. In seiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit dreht sich alles um Klima, Eis und Schnee: Es geht um Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kryo- und Atmosphäre. Nach Forschungsaufenthalten in Chile, ist Grönland sein Forschungsschwerpunkt und wegen der oft jahrelangen Feldforschung häufig der Lebensmittelpunkt. Auf Grönland erhobene Daten sollen Aufschluss über Vergangenheit und Zukunft des Klimawandels geben.Heinz Gärtner ist Politikwissenschaftler, er lehrt an der Universität Wien, leitet den Beirat des International Institute for Peace (IIP) und ist Vorsitzender des Strategie- und Sicherheitspolitischen Beirats des Österreichischen Bundesheeres. Er leitete als wissenschaftlicher Direktor das Österreichische Institut für internationale Politik – oiip. Seine Forschung über die USA, Fragen internationaler Sicherheit, Abrüstung und Rüstungskontrolle führten ihn unter anderem an die Universitäten Erlangen, Stanford, Oxford und die Johns Hopkins in Washington, an denen er als Gastprofessor tätig war. Heinz Gärtner hat neben Fachbeiträgen zahlreiche Bücher geschrieben, zuletzt erschien von ihm Ideen zum positiven Frieden. Der Kalte Krieg ist einer seiner Forschungsschwerpunkte.Horst Machguth ist Glaziologe. Er lehrt und forscht an der Université de Fribourg in der Schweiz zur Massenbilanz von Gletschern und Eisschilden. Seine Forschung ist für das Monitoring der globalen Eisressourcen bedeutsam, ebenso wie für das Verständnis der geophysikalischen Prozesse in Eisschilden und Gletschern. [00:30] What Inspired Tara To Start Studying Sleep In 2007, when Tara lost her youngest son, the grief and depression really took away all of her sleep. If you lose enough night to sleep, you really are cognitively drunk. Eventually, Tara dove deep into sleep research and figuring out how to get the best sleep possible. Tara realized that quality sleep enhances overall health and wellness, giving you focus on taking the day. [04:20] If You Get Less Than Six Hours of Sleep Over Two Weeks, It Is The Same As Being Legally Drunk You can go without food longer than you can without sleep. Your body functions better when fasting. However, the same does not go for sleeping. Sleep is fundamental. If you don't sleep for ten days, you can die. We need sleep for longevity and health. If you don't sleep, you won't function well. Your chances of getting in a car crash are exactly the same if you're sleep-deprived or drunk. [09:20] True or False: You Should Get Eight Hours of Sleep Every Night The myth that you need eight hours of sleep is one of Tara's favorite ideas to debunk. Eight hours of sleep actually came about in the Industrial Revolution. Once we fall asleep, this is where some of the magical parts of the environmental factors like temperature can really come into effect. Our neurons are triggered by a change of temperature. You get the most amount of deep sleep when your body is two degrees cooler. The probability of getting the deepest sleep is in that first half when it's getting cooler. 98% of your weight loss is going to happen during deep sleep. A twenty-minute ice bath is phenomenal for your sleep. Go to bed an hour after your ice bath. If you're in a hotel room, cold cycling can reset your circadian rhythm. Nach dem enttäuschenden 2.ICSI Frischversuch wechseln wir wieder zurück zum vorherigen Arzt. Bisher haben wir hier ja keine schlechten Erfahrung gemacht, auch wenn er nicht gerade vor Ideen sprudelt, was unsere Behandlung angeht (ok, das war ironisch…). An dieser Stelle ist uns nett und freundlich auf jeden Fall lieber, als die Erfahrungen, die wir beim Frischversuch mit der “Klinikkoryphäe” gemacht hatten. Vielleicht hätten wir auch schon an diesem Punkt über einen Klinikwechsel nachgedacht. Da wir aber noch 3 Eizellen eingefroren haben, ist uns dieser Schritt doch zu kompliziert und wir beschließen für die Kryos noch in der Klinik zu bleiben. In dieser Episode geht es um unseren ersten Kryo-Versuch. Warum der Transfer beim Kryo-Zyklus doch viel angenehmer ist und was ich diesmal in der Warteschleife anders gemacht habe. Und natürlich erfahrt ihr auch, ob wir diesmal mehr Glück gehabt haben, als beim ersten ICSI-Frischversuch.
Journalists Kelvin Lewis in Sierra Leone and Linus Kaikai in Kenya discuss how best to navigate the murky waters of ethnic politics, especially when reporting on elections. They found out that even though their countries were on opposite sides of the continent, they shared the same concerns over how political blocs play on ethnicity to win votes. Both Kenya and Sierra Leone are multi-ethnic countries where some politicians do not hesitate to manipulate voters along ethnic lines and fuel rancor using tribalism as a political tool. Kenya has an unfortunate history of post-electoral violence and Sierra Leone is gearing up for presidential elections in March 2018. Kelvin Lewis and Linus Kaikai discussed how the media in Kenya managed to navigate through such thorny issues and how Sierra Leone’s media is attempting not to fall into the trap of ethnic politics. Kelvin Lewis says that signs of tensions are surfacing and that the political contenders are alreday facing attack. “If the situation is not managed well, it might lead into serious conflict. Ethnicity and regionalism… are the bane of the our politics in Sierra Leone,” he told RFI Conflict is not merely a word, or an abstract notion for Kelvin Lewis. As a journalist with 30 years experience, he has lived and reported through Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war (1991 – 2002) and will not accept his country spiralling into further chaos. This is one of the reason why, as the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), he has set up a training programme for journalists on balanced political reporting and conflict sensitive reporting. The programme is opened to all journalists (six to eight hundred of them) and not only SLAJ’s 600 members. There are at least four training sessions planned. One in each of the country’s four regions, to be held in their headquarter towns. Accountability pays Linus Kaikai, general manager of NTV, Nation Television, who in a 20 year career has covered a number of Kenyan elections, says that the level of post-electoral violence in Kenya has dramatically dropped since 2007/2008 when over one thousand people died. “One of the steps that made this last election relatively peaceful was that the threat for consequences was real. For politicians, the International Criminal Court can come in. For you citizen, the local courts can come in and there will be consequences for that violence”, explains Linus Kaikai The media in Kenya also played a key role in that respect. In 2013, it successfully managed to organise debates involving all eight presidential candidates to outline their agenda. “This changed the narrative from focus on tribes and ethnic communities to focusing on issues,” says Kaikai. "It was a success in 2013 but not quite so this year in 2017 because the debates were boycotted by the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta and the controversies surrounding other candidates." Kelvin Lewis asked Linus Kaikai how the Kenyan media helped tame down the ethnic bias that was prevalent during the 2013 general elections. “The use of ethnicity as a mobilization tool is still very much strong and alive in Kenyan politics”, Kaikai replied. "First of all, the main players rally their tribe behind [them] and then build a coalition of tribes to meet the other coalition of tribes.” Avoid associating ethnic groups with parties Linus Kaikai admits that it has been very difficult for the media in Kenya to break this pattern. “[We] tried to avoid references to [naming] the communities and stick to the party names. For example, media deliberately avoid making references to those communities or tribes rallied around the Jubilee party [of President Uhuru Kenyatta], [same for] the National Super Alliance, NASA, associated with Raila Odinga and the coalition of tribes associated with that bloc.” The other step undertaken by Kenyan media to stay clear of ethnic tensions was to also avoid reproducing speeches in local languages addressed towards a particular community. “When, for example, the President is speaking in his native language to his community, that will not find its way to television, newspapers or radio because this is considered sometimes offending to other communities.” An efficient media regulatory body The Communications Authority of Kenya is another contributing factor explains Linus Kaikai. “Oversight has improved greatly and that has improved responsibility [from] presenters and producers. Our regulatory body is keeping an eye on broadcasts and print media to ensure that some of this hate speech in 2007 that ended up in the International Criminal Court do not arise again," he said. But Kaikai warns that the danger still remains when politicians use their native languages on community radio stations as they then tend to drop their guards. In Sierra Leone, however, Kelvin Lewis deplores that the country’s Independent Media Commission is not as impartial as it should be and he says it is one of the main reason why he has set up this training programme for journalists ahead of the 2018 elections. “The media outlets associated with the ruling party get away with a lot of things. Those on the other side, if they do same, will be held responsible very quickly”, Lewis said. Legal actions may be an option but then again Kelvin Lewis remains skeptical: “You wonder how the courts will rule against the ruling part. It is almost not likely.” Radio is the preferred media among Sierra Leoneans with 70 different stations scattered across the country even though there are some 120 newspapers circulating, mostly in the capital Freetown. In Kenya TV is the most popular media. There are only 3 local television stations in Sierra Leone with two of them being privately owned. Kryo is the language most used by the radio stations in Sierra Leone with Mende being more dominant in the East and Temne in the North. The challenge resides in ensuring that the community radios broadcasting in the local languages focus on issues affecting the country and not on ethnicity or ethnic concerns. “We have a programme now called National Dialogue and we are urging the press to go along with it,” says Kelvin Lewis. The two journalists also discussed transfer of power in their respective countries and how the political divide is linked to geography and ethnic groups. One of Kelvin’s burning question for his East African collegue, Linus, was the latter’s last name, Kaikai, a typically Sierra Leonean surname. 4月19日，小米终于拿出了七周年的重量级产品——小米6。这款产品在问世之前就饱受关注，毕竟作为每一代的当家之作，其表现直接影响到小米接下来一年的发展。而近年来小米通过小米Note2与小米MIX这两款产品较为成功的扭转了消费者心中“小米手机无设计“这一看法。 本期我们就来对小米6尊享版做一个深度评测！首先来说说外观，从小米4上的奥氏体304不锈钢中框，到后来小米MIX的全陶瓷机身及全面屏，小米这些年在外观工艺方面的探索有目共睹。作为七周年的第一份献礼，小米6尊享版成功的让自身得到了飞跃性的进化，仿佛是这七年来小米所有超前技术的融合体。 曾经我们在小米5上对曲面陶瓷有了初步的认识，而小米6尊享版则将这一技术进一步升华，成为首款四曲面陶瓷手机。在材质上陶瓷有着先天的优势，不仅具备金属的质感，还拥有优于玻璃的镜面光泽。最重要的是，陶瓷的硬度高于玻璃，因此虽然看上去很脆弱，但实际上小米6尊享版的背部还是很耐磨的。 小米6尊享版有别于其他版本的特色还有一个，就是其背部双摄像头周围的装饰圈采用了18K金，这一设计此前我们曾在小米MIX尊享版上看到过。金色的圆环配合黑色镜面一般的背部，起到了画龙点睛的作用。 传统的小米logo一般在正面，而这一次被挪至了背部，小编还是比较认同这种改变的，毕竟放在正面存在感实在太强... 为了保证手机整体光泽统一，小米6尊享版对不锈钢边框采用了特殊工艺，在表现上更具高光效果。而四曲面背部与边框的完美衔接使其手感也如颜值一般，拿在手中温润如玉。不过对边框的耐磨度还是有些担忧，比如之前的某款不锈钢边框机器在使用了一段时间后简直伤痕累累，而若装上保护壳，恐怕质感效果会则大打折扣！ 另外，小米6尊享版取消了3.5mm耳机孔，而剩余的开孔基本呈对称形式。SIM卡槽依旧支持双卡，值得一提的是，小米6尊享版双卡全网通已经升级到4.0版本，能够全面支持三大运营商4G+网络，真正的实现一机在手天下我有。 尊享版正面屏幕下方的指纹识别区域沿袭了小米5s的方案，而在识别速度与准确度上是有明显提升的。由于是黑色面板，因此顶部的开孔几乎不可见，黑边也不会有任何显露。小编在发布会体验区接触了白色面板的真机，黑边状况也有了明显的改善，小米5s上的大黑边不复存在了~ 讲真，小米6尊享版的屏占比并没有什么优势，不过屏幕整体的素质还是蛮高的。另外得益于小米研发的夜光屏技术，其屏幕最低亮度可低至1尼特。 还有值得一提的是，小米6尊享版此次增加了防泼溅功能，虽然不是IP67/68级防水，不过对于生活常见场景下的水溅、水泼可提供一定程度的保护。 下面我们再来说说性能，小米6采用了满血版骁龙835，全新Kryo 280架构，最高主频2.45GHz，储存组合上面全系标配6GB LPDDR4x，ROM为64GB/128GB两种搭配。 从安兔兔跑分来看，虽然成绩不像雷老板在PPT上展示的那么高，不过177107的表现也算是很高了。另外有一点必须要提的，就是关于骁龙处理器在连接性上的表现。有了骁龙Modem对2x2双路Wi-Fi的支持，在网络速率方面小米6尊享版得到了成倍的提升。毕竟相比于单天线手机，两路天线负责WiFi信号收发，其数据吞吐量也是单天线的两倍之多，并且还拥有更强的信号接收能力。 这样的成果完全得益于满血版骁龙835处理器，小米能够第一时间拿到高通这块心血之作，为用户带来性能与网络方面的双重流畅体验，想来和其一直强调的“发烧”之心不无关系。 在拍照方面，小米6尊享版采用了和iPhone 7 Plus一样的双摄镜头方案，其中一颗是支持2倍光学变焦和4轴光学防抖的摄像头，而另一颗则是全新的长焦摄像头，可将远处景物无损地位拉近拍摄。先进的变焦双摄方案，配合双目立体视觉和深度学习算法，使小米6尊享版在背景虚化方面得到了较为明显的提升。 值得一提的是，此次小米6在全新人像模式中加入了智能美颜3.0，可通过全脸上百个定位点，准确记录面部信息。广角+长焦双摄方案另一个优势在于，等效52mm焦距的长焦镜头是极为适合拍人像的镜头。当开启人像模式后，小米6可实现完美的背景虚化，同时背景虚化并非单纯处理，而是采用渐进虚化的处理，更加接近真实状态。 小米6尊享版在小编看来更像是小米将这些年潜心研究的技术全部集中实现的产物，无论是四曲面陶瓷机身还是不锈钢边框，都是之前产品设计的一个延伸。最终呈现出来的效果虽然不错，不过要是小米Note2上的双曲面柔性屏幕能够用在小米6上，想必就更加抢眼了！小米6最低2499元，尊享版2999元，这代产品的价格相较于前代来说涨幅比较明显，不过考虑到这次的做工与用料还是比较合理的。经过小米Note2与小米MIX这两款产品，小米成功的树立了自身着力于设计的形象，也让用户渐渐接受了高于红米产品线的价格策略。而在保证高颜值的同时，依旧定位于“发烧”的高性能并没有丢下，两者双管齐下相信能击中不少消费者的痛点，但最关键的还是，雷老板的备货量要能跟得上市场的需求才行！
4月19日，小米终于拿出了七周年的重量级产品——小米6。这款产品在问世之前就饱受关注，毕竟作为每一代的当家之作，其表现直接影响到小米接下来一年的发展。而近年来小米通过小米Note2与小米MIX这两款产品较为成功的扭转了消费者心中“小米手机无设计“这一看法。 本期我们就来对小米6尊享版做一个深度评测！首先来说说外观，从小米4上的奥氏体304不锈钢中框，到后来小米MIX的全陶瓷机身及全面屏，小米这些年在外观工艺方面的探索有目共睹。作为七周年的第一份献礼，小米6尊享版成功的让自身得到了飞跃性的进化，仿佛是这七年来小米所有超前技术的融合体。 曾经我们在小米5上对曲面陶瓷有了初步的认识，而小米6尊享版则将这一技术进一步升华，成为首款四曲面陶瓷手机。在材质上陶瓷有着先天的优势，不仅具备金属的质感，还拥有优于玻璃的镜面光泽。最重要的是，陶瓷的硬度高于玻璃，因此虽然看上去很脆弱，但实际上小米6尊享版的背部还是很耐磨的。 小米6尊享版有别于其他版本的特色还有一个，就是其背部双摄像头周围的装饰圈采用了18K金，这一设计此前我们曾在小米MIX尊享版上看到过。金色的圆环配合黑色镜面一般的背部，起到了画龙点睛的作用。 传统的小米logo一般在正面，而这一次被挪至了背部，小编还是比较认同这种改变的，毕竟放在正面存在感实在太强... 为了保证手机整体光泽统一，小米6尊享版对不锈钢边框采用了特殊工艺，在表现上更具高光效果。而四曲面背部与边框的完美衔接使其手感也如颜值一般，拿在手中温润如玉。不过对边框的耐磨度还是有些担忧，比如之前的某款不锈钢边框机器在使用了一段时间后简直伤痕累累，而若装上保护壳，恐怕质感效果会则大打折扣！ 另外，小米6尊享版取消了3.5mm耳机孔，而剩余的开孔基本呈对称形式。SIM卡槽依旧支持双卡，值得一提的是，小米6尊享版双卡全网通已经升级到4.0版本，能够全面支持三大运营商4G+网络，真正的实现一机在手天下我有。 尊享版正面屏幕下方的指纹识别区域沿袭了小米5s的方案，而在识别速度与准确度上是有明显提升的。由于是黑色面板，因此顶部的开孔几乎不可见，黑边也不会有任何显露。小编在发布会体验区接触了白色面板的真机，黑边状况也有了明显的改善，小米5s上的大黑边不复存在了~ 讲真，小米6尊享版的屏占比并没有什么优势，不过屏幕整体的素质还是蛮高的。另外得益于小米研发的夜光屏技术，其屏幕最低亮度可低至1尼特。 还有值得一提的是，小米6尊享版此次增加了防泼溅功能，虽然不是IP67/68级防水，不过对于生活常见场景下的水溅、水泼可提供一定程度的保护。 下面我们再来说说性能，小米6采用了满血版骁龙835，全新Kryo 280架构，最高主频2.45GHz，储存组合上面全系标配6GB LPDDR4x，ROM为64GB/128GB两种搭配。 从安兔兔跑分来看，虽然成绩不像雷老板在PPT上展示的那么高，不过177107的表现也算是很高了。另外有一点必须要提的，就是关于骁龙处理器在连接性上的表现。有了骁龙Modem对2x2双路Wi-Fi的支持，在网络速率方面小米6尊享版得到了成倍的提升。毕竟相比于单天线手机，两路天线负责WiFi信号收发，其数据吞吐量也是单天线的两倍之多，并且还拥有更强的信号接收能力。 这样的成果完全得益于满血版骁龙835处理器，小米能够第一时间拿到高通这块心血之作，为用户带来性能与网络方面的双重流畅体验，想来和其一直强调的“发烧”之心不无关系。 在拍照方面，小米6尊享版采用了和iPhone 7 Plus一样的双摄镜头方案，其中一颗是支持2倍光学变焦和4轴光学防抖的摄像头，而另一颗则是全新的长焦摄像头，可将远处景物无损地位拉近拍摄。先进的变焦双摄方案，配合双目立体视觉和深度学习算法，使小米6尊享版在背景虚化方面得到了较为明显的提升。 值得一提的是，此次小米6在全新人像模式中加入了智能美颜3.0，可通过全脸上百个定位点，准确记录面部信息。广角+长焦双摄方案另一个优势在于，等效52mm焦距的长焦镜头是极为适合拍人像的镜头。当开启人像模式后，小米6可实现完美的背景虚化，同时背景虚化并非单纯处理，而是采用渐进虚化的处理，更加接近真实状态。 小米6尊享版在小编看来更像是小米将这些年潜心研究的技术全部集中实现的产物，无论是四曲面陶瓷机身还是不锈钢边框，都是之前产品设计的一个延伸。最终呈现出来的效果虽然不错，不过要是小米Note2上的双曲面柔性屏幕能够用在小米6上，想必就更加抢眼了！小米6最低2499元，尊享版2999元，这代产品的价格相较于前代来说涨幅比较明显，不过考虑到这次的做工与用料还是比较合理的。经过小米Note2与小米MIX这两款产品，小米成功的树立了自身着力于设计的形象，也让用户渐渐接受了高于红米产品线的价格策略。而在保证高颜值的同时，依旧定位于“发烧”的高性能并没有丢下，两者双管齐下相信能击中不少消费者的痛点，但最关键的还是，雷老板的备货量要能跟得上市场的需求才行！
