The cannabis industry convinced the world it had a medicine before the science caught up. Now the science is here, and almost no one is paying attention. CBD is not a panacea. When Charlotte's Web opened hearts and minds, the messaging of what it could do ran years ahead of what the data could actually support. That gap created a backlash the legitimate medical thesis didn't deserve. What's left on the other side of the green rush is a near-complete forgetting of the reason this industry started in the first place. The medicine. Now the infrastructure to prove it is finally in place. Standardized genetics. Reproducible extraction. Full compound characterization. An FDA botanical drug pathway that has existed since 2016 that most investors have never heard of. Organic medicine versus synthetic single-molecule will be a real choice at the pharmacy counter sooner than most people expect. The foundational work is already here. This week we sit down with Joel Stanley and Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller: Botanical drugs vs. supplements 6,000 compounds, one drug Novel compounds nobody has named yet Chapters 00:00 Why Medical Validation Remains a Challenge for Cannabis 00:12 The FDA Approval Process for Plant-Based Medicines 01:03 Historical Market Dynamics and Their Impact on Cannabis Perception 02:48 Removing the Veil: How Science Can Validate Cannabinoid Therapies 03:15 The Complexity of Plant Molecules and Real-World Evidence 06:20 Focus in Drug Development: The Case of Autism Spectrum Disorder 07:10 The Impact of Charlotte's Web and Media Hype 08:52 Balancing Hype and Reality in Cannabinoid Medicine 10:01 Legitimization of Cannabis Research in Academia 12:10 The Evolution of Cannabis Research and Acceptance 13:54 The Future of Botanical Medicine and Academic Research 16:15 The Long Road of Drug Development for Cannabis-Based Medicines 20:50 Introducing AJA-001: A Botanical Drug for Autism 22:44 Standardization and Characterization of Botanical Drugs 24:01 Partnerships and Funding in Botanical Drug Development 24:40 Challenges of Multi-Compound Botanical Drugs 27:28 Reproducibility and Quality Control in Botanical Manufacturing 29:06 FDA Pathways for Botanical Drugs and New Chemical Entities 34:29 Identifying and Characterizing Thousands of Plant Compounds 39:48 The Role of AI and Supercomputing in Drug Discovery 41:11 Balancing Exploration and Focus in Botanical Research 44:38 What the World Will Understand About Cannabinoids in 10 Years 47:24 The Promise of Botanical Medicine Over Single Molecule Drugs Guest Links: AJNA Biosciences Websitehttps://ajnabiosciences.com/ AJNA Biosciences LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/ajna-biosciences/posts/?feedView=all AJNA Biosciences Instagram @ajnabiosciences Charlotte's Web Websitehttps://www.charlottesweb.com/ Charlotte's Web LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/charlottesweb/posts/?feedView=all Charlotte's Web Instagram @charlotteswebcbd Joel Stanley LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-stanley-2885116b/ Joel Stanley Instagram @joel.stanley Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/marcel-bonn-miller-897a581/ Our Links: Bryan Fields on Twitter Kellan Finney on Twitter The Dime on Twitter Extraction Teams: Want to cut costs and get more out of every run? Purpose of the conversation: Ian Jessop continues his interview with Robin Swan of Swan Apothecary, covering product safety, scams in the cannabis market, success stories, and how cannabis supports cancer treatment. "Backyard alchemists" defined as home cannabis producers ranging from passionate plant medicine enthusiasts to dangerous unregulated sellers; once selling to hundreds online, safe handling protocols and regulatory compliance become non-negotiable. Scammers targeting desperately ill patients via Facebook and Instagram DMs are rampant in the unregulated cannabis market, often collecting thousands of dollars before disappearing. Robin Swan stresses lab testing as essential—third-party labs verify both potency and contamination levels; buyers should call the lab directly to confirm it is a real, legitimate facility. Swan Apothecary ships to the US, Canada, UK, Scotland, and Ireland; its 30,000 clients have all come through word-of-mouth and podcast appearances due to advertising restrictions on cannabis businesses. Of Swan Apothecary's 47 products, most are CBD, CBG, and CBC-focused with only trace THC; flagship product Fire Kitty—infused with frankincense, myrrh, calendula, cinnamon, rosemary, and cannabinoids—tests below 1% THC and is used for neuropathy, seizures, and arthritis. Education is Robin's primary tool against scammers; an informed consumer is far less likely to be defrauded, and she positions herself as an advocate for consumer protection in the cannabis space. A 2015 leukemia case at St. Jude's: a three-year-old's improvement on Swan Apothecary cannabis oil prompted her mother to arrange a live speakerphone call between Robin and a room of oncologists; the girl, now 14–15, is in remission and has become a backyard herbalist herself. A second pediatric case involved a two-year-old with an ocular tumor at Rady's Children's Hospital; suppositories made from cartel-sourced "El Chapo" flower (200 mg THC, 600 mg CBN per gram) caused the tumor to reduce and the eye to retract for hours at a time—the child outlived her prognosis by 18 months and visited Disneyland. A pivotal 2009 case involving a power company executive named Lisa: two grams of cannabis oil administered over 12–14 hours stopped an active brain bleed, moved her out of the ICU, and gave her 30 more days of life—this experience cemented Robin's unconditional commitment to the plant. Cannabis plays well alongside most chemotherapy (except immunotherapy), acting as a protective shield that helps target chemo more precisely and reduces damage to surrounding cells and organs, which is why patients using it report fewer side effects. Fire Kitty applied before and after chemo infusions, combined with a light soup-based diet for two to three days prior and a high-fat, high-protein meal immediately after the session, is recommended to reduce chemo-related neuropathy and sickness. In this weeks interview Macky sits down with Emma Appleby. Emma has a daughter who suffers with epilepsy, and like many children in her position, cannabis has shown to be the only medicine to really make a difference in the quality of her life. The trouble is, it is very expensive, and it seems to be getting harder and harder to find in the UK too. Emma tells us about her struggle to get medicine for her daughter, and how even after 5 years of legalisation in the UK, it seems as if she gets very little help from the government. Roll yourself a few for this one, its is the kind of interview that reminds us that fight is far from over, and people are still suffering because of outdated laws that are being enforced by ignorant people. “By making something illegal, you're making it more dangerous. It's a classic effect of that. It's similarly with cannabis and what we were talking about with THC, it's about the lack of education and telling people just don't do any drugs, don't do anything.” - Miyabe ShieldsIn this episode, Miyabe Shields shares insights on cannabis as medicine and healing. She discusses the challenges of studying cannabis in the US, biosynthetic and synthetic cannabinoid production, and the importance of proper dosing. (What is responsible?)Cannabis saved my life and continues to save my life to this day; psychedelics made me grateful for it. My personal experience fueled my passion for biochemistry and molecular biology which lead me to my PhD in drug discovery in the system in the brain that interacts with cannabis – the endocannabinoid system. During my PhD, I was lucky to study under formative cannabinoid scientists like Dr. Alexandros Makriyannis, PhD and Dr. Torbjorn Jarbe, PhD, and was honored to receive a PhD research award from the International Cannabinoid Research Symposium in Poland in 2016.After completing my dissertation in 2018, I worked in the cannabis industry starting in demographic research and eventually co-founding my former company Real Isolates LLC where I studied the unique chemistry of cannabis smoke, developed a novel extraction technology which resulted in a method patent, and formulated products that showed unique effects. In 2021 I began using my personal social media page to share my knowledge of pharmacology and destigmatize natural products. I was shocked by how many people were not just interested, but yearning for more knowledge; I was shocked by how tapping into the community made me realize where I was personally lacking knowledge. It's now 2023 and I want to advocate for fixing that – let's start the conversation!Shayda Torabi has been called one of the most influential Women in WordPress and now she's one of the women leading the cannabis reformation conversation building one of Texas' premier CBD brands. Hello, Beautiful People! Today, we are going to talk about cannabis taking on the alcohol market. Enter Bill Gibbs of Sweet Dreams Vineyard – Bill is at the forefront of the demand for drinkable cannabis. I for one LOVE that there is an option to drink cannabis similarly to how I have enjoyed alcohol. Right now, I use it similar to hard alcohol, making “mixed drinks” but it sometimes makes me feel too stoney with one or two drinks. What I want, and what I think the market really needs is something that drinks like a beer or glass of wine! Compelling, yes? Currently, the Cannaberet and Marijuarita (say that 3 times fast I DARE YOU) is available in Arizona (small tear for me because I would be a frequent customer FOR SURE) – so go check it out and let me know what you think! Now let's cut to the interview with Bill! Keep blazing and stay AMAZING!

Jaime Brambila and his wife Nicole specialize in coaching and educating patients about the clinical use of cannabinoids and other plant-based medicines. The principal aspects of their mission are to democratize plant-based medicine and democratize the science, taking the complex pharmacological information and breaking it down so everyone can understand the therapeutic potential. When Mara Gordon started using medical cannabis there wasn't any lab testing — or any way to know how much of each cannabinoid or terpene was in a given strain . There was definitely no way of ensuring that you got the same effect from it consistently. So she drew on her training as a process engineer and decided to start doing it herself.Gordon has been featured in the Netflix documentary, Weed the People, and owns and operates two medical cannabis companies. One of the things she does is collect and analyze data about cannabis products and how patients with different medical conditions respond to them. All of that data is packaged into software doctors can use to manage their patients' medical marijuana treatment.“I know how to collect data. I know how to analyze data. I know how to make incredibly good medicine, but [doctors] have to be the ones managing [their] patients' care,” Gordon says on The Cannabis Enigma Podcast. What's one of the most surprising things she's learned from all of that data? “The lack of correlation between the weight of the patient and the dose,” Gordon says. “That was shocking.”This episode was originally released in December 2019.Produced by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man and Elana Goldberg, and edited and mixed by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man. The Cannabis Enigma Podcast is a co-production of Americans for Safe Access and The Cannigma. Music by Desca.
