When working with medicinal cannabis in the age of COVID-19, it may help to think in wo separate categories: COVID-19 naïve (cannabis use in a population that is not and has no record of having been infected by COVID-19) and acute COVID-19. Can Using Cannabis Make People More Susceptible to COVID-19 Infection? David Bearman, MD, executive vice president of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine and a certified cannabinoid medicine specialist, notes that it's important to distinguish between adult and medicinal cannabis use. Concerning adult use, Bearman would err on the side of caution and recommends people “take an herbal vacation until they've been successfully vaccinated.” If a person is using cannabis to relieve symptoms of a serious illness, such as cancer or epilepsy, Bearman believes it may be beneficial for some patients to continue treatment but makes it clear that “risk assessment for cannabis during the COVID-19 pandemic needs to be made in conjunction with the health care provider on a case-by-case basis.” The intent is to ensure that potential benefits outweigh the risks. Bearman also emphasizes that any inhalation—whether via smoking or vaporizing—increases a person's risk of COVID-19 because the respiratory route of cannabis increases both sputum and bronchial irritation, making a person more susceptible to infection. Essentially, if cannabis is being used medicinally, clinicians should discuss the immune modulation effects and route of administration with patients. The conversation shifts to boundaries, and what Becca calls the "doormat mentality." The episode wraps up with topics like surrendering to healing, and finding flow. Mike Robinson refers to himself as a “hippie stoner savant” though he is way beyond what any label can fully describe. Once a successful race car driver, Robinson’s racing career ended in 1995 when his car smacked into a wall at 181 mph. He ended up in a coma and then a wheelchair with a series of disabilities such as severe neuropathy and brain Injury, epilepsy, and several forms of cancer.“I went from making seven digits a year to collecting social security,” Robinson said. “Then my roommate gave me some CBD from whole-plant hemp and things totally changed.” Robinson soon became an unstoppable advocate for medical cannabis with a passion for helping others. He soon founded the Global Cannabinoid Research Center and the American Cannabis Compassion Alliance, worked as the director of communications at the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine, and was a registered Civil Rights lobbyist. He continues to provide various alternative protocol treatments to countless disadvantaged cannabis patients.  All of the above ultimately led Robinson to his most important job of all: being Genevieve’s dad. Genevieve, now 17, suffers from severe autism, epilepsy, and OCD.  Her mother contacted Robinson in 2016 seeking an alternative to the pharmaceutical medications her daughter was taking to little effect. Robinson responded with a cannabis-based rescue oil to which Genevieve responded positively and immediately. She continues to make enormous strides with a drastic reduction in seizures. As luck and love would have it, Genevieve’s mother and Robinson decided to tie the knot. And, while the rest is history on a personal level, there will surely be more to come from Mike Robinson, starting with the production of his own products, Mike’s Medicines.

“In a perfect world, we'd see cannabis available in pharmacies, just like any other drug or supplement. And if you don't need the pharmacist's help, great — somebody else will,” says cannabis pharmacist Dr. Melani Kane.In some US states, pharmacists are required to be on site at cannabis dispensaries to help with dosing and to watch out for potential drug interactions. And cannabis, CBD in particular, can affect the ways other medications work in your body. For patients, just having a medically knowledgeable resource available can ease some of their anxiety, Dr. Kane says. Explaining what to expect is a huge part of that.“The side effects of THC can be very uncomfortable. They're not life threatening in any way, shape or form — it's definitely the safest drug I've ever dispensed,” Dr. Kane continues. “But if you have that feeling of anxiety or dysphoria, if you're expecting it to make you sleep and it doesn't and you're up all night, I think that can be very discouraging to patients.”Dr. Kane also spoke about the pitfalls of adult use legalization displacing or replacing medical cannabis programs. “The populations that [most] benefit from these medical programs are the very young and the elderly, because you're not going to have a 85 year old going into a dispensary trying to figure out what works for them,” she explains. “And kids can't use adult use programs without that medical permission.”Dr. Kane is the co-founder and executive director of the International Society of Cannabis Pharmacists, which is holding its Clinical Cannabinoid Pharmacy Conference in mid-August 2020, helping to educate medical professionals, particularly pharmacists about cannabis medicine. For 15% off tickets to the conference, use coupon code “Cannigma15.”This episode was edited, produced, and mixed by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man with production assistance from Matan Weil. “We have to listen to our patients,” Dr. Kirsten Muller-Vahl repeats several times. It was hearing her patients with Tourette's, ADHD and other neurological conditions tell her how they got relief by self-medicating with cannabis, after all, that drove her to become one of the world's premier cannabinoid researchers. But that type of anecdotal evidence isn't enough. “In the end you always need controlled trials because otherwise you cannot differentiate between pharmacological effects and placebo effects,” she explains.Today, Dr. Muller-Vahl is conducting a broad clinical study on using cannabis to treat Tourette's in Germany. If those controlled clinical trials aren't conducted, “in 10 years, [the skeptics will] ask us where are the studies? You are talking about cannabinoids and their potential in all these different diseases, but there's nothing.”Of course, conducting clinical trials on cannabis is not an easy task. In addition to the question of funding, more practical concerns can stand in the way — for instance, how do you create a placebo to stand in for inhaled cannabis flower? How do you create a placebo version of a joint? This episode was edited by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, and was produced by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, Elana Goldberg, and Matan Weil. Music by Desca.

Dr. Joseph Rosado, MD is one of the world’s most respected medical authorities on cannabis as plant-based medicine. With over four decades of experience as a healthcare professional, he’s built a career anchored in family tradition and driven by a desire to help his patients and community. Dr. Rosado credits his father, Joseph Rosado Jr, an x-ray technician training to become a physician’s assistant before his untimely death. Losing his father spurred Dr. Rosado to start working at a young age to help support his family. He trained as a certified nurse’s assistant, then known as an orderly, and began working in the medical field in 1978 at age 16.     After high school, Dr. Rosado trained as an emergency medical technician, paramedic, and catheterization laboratory technician while working his way through college. A major car accident led Dr. Rosado to the field of chiropractic. After a chiropractor alleviated his agonizing back pain in just a few weeks of care, Dr. Rosado decided to explore the complementary medicine system. As a chiropractor, Dr. Rosado dedicated his practice to helping underserved communities, particularly those for whom English was a second language, ensuring that each patient received the highest quality of care that he could provide. Much more than a practitioner, Dr. Rosado became a friend, and for many, their only healthcare provider. Dr. Rosado’s decision to become a medical doctor was inspired by one such patient, who called in a frantic state when his daughter suffered a series of non-stop epileptic seizures. Distraught, the father sought Dr. Rosado’s support to save her life. Dr. Rosado provided critical advice to stabilize the girl, and then accompanied her family to the emergency room, where he translated for her terrified parents. The experience helped Dr. Rosado understand both the necessity of bilingual doctors and his own calling in medicine.    At the age of 35, Dr. Rosado entered medical school, quickly distinguishing him as a top student, while working his way through school as a husband and father. In medical school, he studied marijuana and determined that potential health and wellness benefits could be extracted from the plant. As a student and newly certified physician, Dr. Rosado worked throughout the Latin American Diaspora, setting up a clinic in Costa Rica, serving as a team doctor for the country’s Olympic teams and hotel concierge physician in the Dominican Republic, among other roles.  Family obligations brought Dr. Rosado back to the United States, where he leveraged his years of healthcare experience, rapidly rising to the top of Florida’s public health community as a physician, clinic and hospital director, and director of the communicable disease division/epidemiology and immunization departments for St. Johns County. In 2014, Dr. Rosado added his considerable professional expertise to the frontlines of Florida’s push for medical marijuana. One of the state’s first doctors advocating for medical cannabis, Dr. Rosado also had the distinction of being the first Central Florida physician to recommend medical marijuana for an adult patient, as well as the first to recommend it for a patient under the age of 18.  Presently, Dr. Rosado is the co-owner of Coastal Cannabis Clinics, a group of medical cannabis clinics in Volusia County, FL, the president and CEO of International Medical Consultants, the co-Medical Director for Minorities 4 Medical Marijuana and Medical Director for marijuanadoctors.com; and, on the scientific board of advisers for Medical Extractos in Medellin, Colombia and Ellipsis in Quebec, Canada. As a clinician he has worked with thousands of patients, from toddlers to the elderly, recommending medical cannabis and managing treatment. Dr. Rosado remains an outspoken advocate and highly sought-after speaker and educator with global impact, lecturing throughout the United States and abroad in Canada, Mexico, Malaysia, Fiji, Thailand, and a host of other countries. He’s appeared in a slew of national and local media outlets, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times.  A published author, Dr. Rosado has written multiple articles for medical journals, as well as the bestselling book “Hope and Healing-A Case for Cannabis” In August 2019, he received the Physician of the Year Award at the Healthcare Achievement Awards sponsored by the Volusia County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and in December 2019, he was named one of 65 Outstanding Black & Hispanic Men Leading in Cannabis by The WeedHead & Co. Dr. Rosado holds degrees in clinical nutrition and chiropractic medicine from Life College in Marietta, GA, a medical degree from Universidad Central del Este, in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, where he graduated summa cum laude. In 2005, he completed his MBA in Health Care Management from the University of Phoenix and graduated magna cum laude. In 2018, he became a Diplomate of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine. A proud father and grandfather, Dr. Rosado currently resides in DeLand, Florida. A special thank you to Eye Am Conchita Cosmetics for your support of the broadcast!

The second episode of The Mike Drop is dedicated to Charlotte Figi who recently passed due to complications from Epilepsy. Mike Robinson, who is also afflicted by Epilepsy and host, Jill Woodworth, who has children with Tuberous Sclerosis related epilepsy, have an intense discussion of Mike's first memory of hearing about Charlotte Figi, "My whole journey with cannabis started with looking at a picture of Charlotte. I mean literally when I first started using cannabis and CBD I didn't even know how to use it. I'd been using cannabis my whole life pretty much, smoking it, but not using medicinally and ingesting it. I didn't even know I was eating CBD because a roommate was giving it to me who couldn't pronounce it. A guy from Korea was calling it can't eat it all. And then finally one day, he spelled it out for me, Cannabidiol, and I went to Google the committee all and popped, Charlotte Figi" From here Mike goes into extensive detail regarding the importance of valuing our time and treasuring the moments because of the uncertainty inherent in an epilepsy diagnosis, whether actively seizing or not. "There are only so many days left. My days matter. So for us, in the world of epilepsy, we are rich with life. We don't need the money to have to value our time." Mike gives an eloquent explanation of a "cytokine storm", what it is, how it is relevant to status epilepticus AND COVID 19 and how Charlotte Figi's passing enabled Mike to connect the dots. "So when I look at the impact that she had, it's not just on the cannabis industry. It's right now during the height of a global pandemic, the impact that allowed me just one little guy in an eight by eight Research Center office to dig deep into this different response to the immune system. And it's really not that different, like we talked about. Somebody tears ligament in their knee. The immune system is what causes this cytokine storm that causes swelling in that knee. It's that basic. So the person has a problem in their lungs, from COVID-19, it's the immune system sending the fluid there, the person has a bunch of seizures, and a lot of gets inflamed. It's the immune system again." We discuss a product that's in development, "So literally what I put everything down for and it wasn't just a response to COVID-19, because when you respond to a cytokine storm, you're responding to every last health issue that causes this. There's a lot of them as we've gone over. The very same formulations I have been working on work for cancer patients undergoing chemo to release free radicals. For anybody who's exposed to anything ...to be safe. It also works for an athlete who just worked out real hard, and for anyone that's just too stressed. Let's say a mom taking care of their special needs kid all day long. backache stressed out, needs to rest, is going nuts. I developed something anyone could put on their body doing something they do every single day.." From here we go into more into detail on products being developed that make claims about treating COVID19 and the dire importance of ending cannabis prohibition, and getting all hands on deck researching and developing an endless number of potential treatments for so many conditions. Mike discusses the challenges to the autism and special needs population escalated by COVID19 and how dire and frustrating what's happening with our loved ones who need relief and treatments now. One of his constant goals that is coming to fruition, is bringing to market cannabis strains that address the autism symptoms and other challenges that have afflicted so many individuals and families many of which CAN BE addressed utilizing the powers of cannabinoid medicine. A parting quote: "I just want to remember Charlotte, and I want to do it in a positive, positive light. We had an angel, visit our earth and stay here for a brief period of time. And whilst you hear the number of lives changed, weren't in the millions, weren't in the tens of millions, I would say more like hundreds of millions. The number of lives that will be changed because this angel visited our earth will hit the billions without a doubt. Yeah, I get chills. So talk about an angelic being. I believe that Charlotte he will forever be looking over us, for will forever be watching us in our labs, watching farmers in their fields, watching patients as they're using their medicine forever." Nikki Lawley~Nikki Lawley, Cannabis Advocate and Educator Traumatic brain injury stole my joy, but cannabis returned it. Nikki, a NY state resident, has always been a proud and diligent worker. She’s served as an HVAC filtration salesperson, later starting her own company, then as a casino dealer, and most recently, as a pediatric nurse. She had suffered two traumatic brain injuries during her younger years, but it was the third TBI that suddenly changed everything. In a heartbeat, her life changed from one of optimism, vibrancy, enthusiasm, confidence, and extroversion, to one of constant pain, withdrawal, depression, and hopelessness. While trying to help administer a routine vaccine to a young boy, Nikki was thrown against the wall, suffering a significant TBI and cervical instability in the process. Nikki’s TBI has caused cognitive deficiencies, confusion, memory loss, anxiety, and pain. She found herself unable to work, unable to interact with others, and in a very dark place. None of the numerous traditional medications she’s tried helped, and if fact, their ghastly side effects left her even worse off. She had long since reached the end of her rope, when, on a whim, figuring she had nothing more to lose, she turned to cannabis. https://linktr.ee/Nikkilawley Nikki's episode on TSC Talks: https://tsctalks.com/tsc-talks-guest-nikki-lawley/ 4. Standardization of Cannabinoid Medicine with Brad Hunt, President of ADVENT Academy. Along with cannabis legalization have come anxious and eager patients looking to healthcare experts for answers to all their cannabis-related questions. Any healthcare practitioner knows how uncomfortable it is to not have scientifically-backed and medically focused answers for patients. The overarching issue is that patient access to cannabis medicine has preceded the education of healthcare professionals in the field. The solution is to train healthcare professionals in cannabis and cannabinoid medicine so that patients continue to have access to knowledgeable and trustworthy providers. The AC Clinics, putting patients first in legal medical cannabis markets means providing them with experts who can support them. How important is the endocannabinoid system? This week we're delighted to be joined by Endocannabinologist & Certified Cannabinoid Medicine Specialist, Dr Rachel Knox. Rachel occupies many roles within the cannabis space and is a leading cannabinoid medicine expert, having delivered a Tedx talk on the endocannabinoid system. Join us as we discuss the ECS's role within the human body, the dangers of THC overconsumption, and potency regulation.Episode SummaryRachel is one of four doctors in her family, who are all interested in using cannabis medically. The endocannabinoid system keeps in balance the body's other physiological systems and was discovered in the late 80's/early 90's.There are over 21,000 peer-reviewed research papers between cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. This number far outweighs the papers on any other named drug or bodily system.Rachel is the chair of the Oregon Cannabis Commission, an organisation who provide guidance and advice to the Oregon Health Authority (Government Agency).Rachel is also working with the Minority Cannabis Business League Association, a not for profit business league created to serve the specific needs of minority cannabis entrepreneurs, workers, and patients/ consumers.Another one of Rachel's roles is a board member for The American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine.  Its members are clinicians and researchers active in the field of endogenous, plant-derived and synthetic cannabinoids and those who support the medical use of cannabinoids. It is the gold standard for the education and dissemination of clinically relevant information in the emerging field of cannabinoid and endocannabinoid medicine. The academy is hoping to create a fellowship track for specialisation in Endocannabinoids and Cannabinoid Medicine, meaning doctors will be able to become board certified. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signalling system identified in the early 1990s by researchers exploring THC.Every mammal has this system, which keeps us in balance and modulates other systems within the body including the endocrine system, neurological systems and the skin.Endocannabinoid receptors exist on a cellular level within mitochondrial membranes in every one of our cells. When we are sick or diseased, we experience endocannabinoid dysfunction. It is possible to metabolise THC and CBD at different rates. Pharmaceutical drugs in comparison to medical cannabis and CBD are easier to measure, predict and dose, although they come with many more side effects. Plant-based medicine, on the other hand, provides similar symptomatic release at lower doses. The endocannabinoid system is often referred to as the endocannabinoid ‘dome' as it operates in a way which is more than unilateral. Endocannabinoids bind to receptors from all bodily systems. The recreational desire for consuming cannabis is to ‘feel' something, meaning strains of Cannabis with high potency THC have been selectively bred to fill this consumer demand. Although Rachel sees cannabis as a broadly safe substance, there can still be issues with its medicine derivatives. For example, CBD Isolate, Epidiolex can cause nausea, sedation and liver toxicity at high doses. THC potency is not widely regulated within the USA, which has led to an increase in cases of Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome in markets where adult use is allowed. The remedy for this condition is THC cessation. Research indicates that frequent use of high potency THC products is the cause. It is incredibly hard to study multiple phytochemicals together, which is why we don't have much scientifi

She logically explains the evolution of her understanding of cannabinoid medicine, starting from an early age. Born in India, moving to the US from India at age 8 with her father, a chemical engineer and her mother, a mathematician and working in computer software, she was raised with a strong interest in science as well as a passion for understanding preventative health. "I'm a family doctor, went to South Carolina (and) finished my practice residency, then I decided to do my second life which brought me back to Massachusetts to Harvard. Where I did my masters in public health because that's where I really realized I had to go back to that calling of preventative medicine." She goes on to say, " That was something that has been rooted in me, that's never really encouraged in most doctors' lives. You know, it's always -make a diagnosis- what's the treatment plan? What's the ICD code that you have to bill with, and how many people?... La la la la la. That's the world of healthcare. Ultimately, what people have to live with today. I was very fortunate also, not only did I have all of that as a background, I had a culture. My parents kept up with my language. I spoke five different languages when I came to this country." Dr. Uma discusses various experiences she had leading up to her "AHA" moment when she was with her mother who was dying of lung cancer for unbeknownst reasons, "she had seen a TV program and I could still hear her saying using ganja and I damn well knew what that word was. I beelined it and I heard her said they're using it for COPD, asthma, lung cancer, PTSD, and I still remember that" From there Dr. Uma has gone on to become one of only 50 physicians certified to practice cannabinoid medicine in the United States. She was one of High Times' top 50 females in Cannabis in 2019. I'll share one more quote to wrap up this intro, with the 3 key facts she shares when doing public speaking, and often she is told by doctors that they just didn't know this; "number one, nobody, and I use the word nobody because there are no deaths ever in the world from this medicine. You cannot die from it. You may feel like you're dying, you ain't gonna die from it. Fact number two, the government has a patent number 66 35 07, issued on October 7, 2003, and it's owned by the government. And it clearly states cannabinoids, not just one, cannabinoids, as an antioxidant. And guess what? A neuroprotectant. There's nothing here about the developing brain. There's nothing here about neurotoxicity. It says neuroprotectant, and they have known about it for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, dementia, strokes, protection of the heart. They have known about it. Fact number three, doctors had the liberty to write prescriptions because it was allowed. And it was in the United States pharmacopeia from 1852 to 1942." Wow. Janna is also known for her daughter's cannabis/Autism success story, which published on the cover story in a nationwide industry magazine in 2017.We engage in a discussion covering Janna's initial entry into the industry to address her own serious health issues and from there launch into a discussion of her daughter's diagnosis and lived experience of Autism."I believe Autism is dysfunction in the is the triad of the gut, the brain and the immune system and the interactions between them okay, this is where main mainstream medicine is really failing to address autism because it's not looking at that it's, it's doing it like many of the mental health disorders where they just they have these symptoms. We're going to label them autism. Oh, yeah, I think we can do put it in the bottle we can try the mental health pharmaceuticals. But beyond that, they don't look at how to heal the gut." "As a nurse, my approach has always been with my daughter with myself , my patients, we're supposed to weigh the risk versus benefit of all of the options and guide our patient to make an informed decision. And obviously, you know, ideally, they would choose the least risky options with the most potential benefits. And I have seen literally I've worked with thousands of patients directly individually. And it's so commonplace for patients to reduce their reliance on pharmaceuticals, once they start cannabis therapy, and really improve their quality of life. You know, in the elderly population. I've seen reversals of dementia, really the autism population I've seen improved behavior, improved quality of life, improved function.""I see cannabis as having the potential to revolutionize our broken healthcare system with you, but the only way that is going to happen is if we keep it pure, and keep it medical quality and keep it patient-focused, because if we go the farmer route, we're going to end up exactly where are right now with pharmaceuticals that aren't effective, they're creating customers not cures, and they're not in the best interest of patients. That's why I am so driven to try to educate, and really bring people on board that are patient-focused, and really highlight those companies."Thanks Janna for opening our eyes to the amazing potential of cannabis to continue to profoundly impact the lives of so many desperate for answers beyond the mainstream medical system. "Be the change you want to see in this world" is one of Mike's favorite quotes and his lived experience clearly exemplifies this intention. In this episode, Mike starts off by advising listeners, "Please people, please tell your doctor because there are drug interactions when you're using CBD" and is one of the major takeaways from this episode. In order to educate physicians treating us or our loved ones, it's exceedingly important to form a partnership, be clear about your use of CBD and Cannabinoid medicine, ask the physician to list it in your medical records with any other medications you may be taking and share the positive impact CBD and Cannabinoid medicine has had for you or loved ones. He emphasizes positive experiences with doctors, “I've had so many things happen when it comes to doctors and I've had good experiences. It's important to talk about that. I've met with doctors, that wanted to fully integrate all cannabis into medicine including a neurologist, here locally, who is now interested in doing an extended EEG on me in the hospital, allowing the oil in the hospital while he does it. He wants to take away what little medication I'm using right now, while I'm on oil to possibly see if I can escape all pharmaceuticals. Additionally, Mike shares his knowledge and concerns on the state of CBD drug development in the US and the focus on developing pharmaceuticals from CBD isolates with additives that are unnecessary and can be harmful. “We need more clinical trials and research on human beings, and a more individualized approach to medicine overall, but particularly when it comes to cannabinoid medicine”. He admonishes: “It's time for America to step up to the plate. We don't need legalization. We don't need government control just end prohibition. End prohibition and allow the research” The information and discussion in this episode is involved and extensive. I want to add that we are not doctors and are putting this information out there in audio format to broaden the scope of our understanding and include resources and the voices of those with lived experience. I’m including some links to more of Mike’s online resources and work and will look forward to future panel episodes and further discussion on the topic of Cannabinoid medicine and will be recruiting medical professionals, nurses and more to further this important discussion. Check out this new nonprofit Mike started with his partner Anne Mari based on their experience with Genevieve and desire to create a wave of love and fun for disabled kids; "Bring Back Santa Barbara's Carousel! Mike Robinson, Cannabis Activist, Founder of Global Cannabinoid Research Center, Severe Epilepsy & Cancer Survivor and fascinating human being has much to share. From his bio on https://mikesmedicines.com; "Mike is a multiple Cancer survivor that’s used cannabis oils and CBD extensively as well for severe epilepsy, chronic Lyme Disease, PTSD, and in pain management. Over the last 6 years Mike has shared his journey and analytics on cannabinoid medicine research globally while assisting patients and helping to teach clinicians globally. Mike is the former Director of Consumer Affairs and Communications at The American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine. His post-grad education, however is not in cannabis or cannabinoid medicine, rather it’s focus was on International Relations and Diplomacy. He has an extensive background includes being an effective leader of a large Cannabis compassion program providing to the disadvantaged that treated countless medicinal cannabis consumers with various alternative protocol treatments, published journalist and international cannabinoid research specialist, former Registered Ca. State Lobbyist 1997, Pro bono non-attorney representative for children with disabilities nationwide for over 2 decades, a member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers and Sisters, the founder of multiple nonprofits that advocate/advocated for the rights of disabled children. Most important Mike is well known for taking on one of his compassion patients, a child with severe autism and epilepsy that received precious oils from his program, is now his own daughter."Mike starts off talking about the first time he used CBD unknowingly to treat his severe, refractory epilepsy with status events caused by a high-speed auto racing wreck. He had right side paralysis, was in a wheelchair, intubated and put into ICU in a coma 39 times, has had over 200 hospitalizations after being brought to ER in status over an 18-year period. It all came to an end on September 8, 2013 with the introduction of “can't eat it all” Korean Ruby, given to him by a roommate which was edible balls of CBD. He gained the understanding that cannabis is awesome medicine if you know how to use it correctly. Mike is also a special needs attorney & advocate who has worked extensively across the US, pro bono, representing families in special needs litigation. After going public about his treatment with CBD and Cannabinoid medicine he was unable to litigate due to his use of a schedule 1 substance so turned his focus to working in the compassion program. The compassion program was started under Prop. 215 in CA. It was the dream of Dennis Peron to provide treatment for those people with severe conditions that can't afford the oils, don't know what to get, then bringing them what they need, showing them how to use it, researching the actual product, the actual Cannabinoids being used and show family members, “Hey, this is why we're using this application”. It could be oils that are ingested it could be suppositories, etc. Mike continues the narrative, sharing how he was on his way to check in with an individual who then was then 1-year seizure-free, now 4 years seizure-free when he got a call from a frantic mom concerned about her daughter with autism and severe epilepsy. He remembers being profoundly concerned when this mother gave him the list of multiple medications, she was taking that didn’t jive with each other and went to meet with this parent. He showed up at the house and the daughter was having a grand mal status seizure. Mike was able to help this family treat the daughter’s epilepsy with CBD oils and whole plant medicine, “I’m a firm believer in using the whole plant when it comes to severe autism. I believe that using THC, it's degraded cousin CBD, I'm sorry. CBN. CBN is a cannabinoid that really mellows out any behavior, including my own, it promotes sleep, rest. And makes the mind rest. So it really calms down children with autism. Yes, CBN. So anyway, I mean, she responded so well. It was just beyond incredible. The day after she started her mom took her to the doctor and the doctor was like, What did you do what happened?” There is so much more discussed in this episode regarding Mike’s phenomenal advocacy and perseverance in the face of incredible barriers and resistance from within and without the healthcare and medical communities. Epidolex CBD - Friend or Foe? You Decide. Written By Mike Robinson ~ Cannabis Heals Cancer Survivor ~ International Cannabinoid Cancer Research Institutes/Domestic Animal Research Ctr. Co-Founder/Director We all knew the pharmaceutical industry would step into the world of Medicinal Cannabis and take over with a bang, but we did not expect it to happen with a whirlwind of professionals voicing concerns globally. Questions are looming about dosing, increased seizures in patients, a death in the trials to seizures, and even other epilepsy drugs that combined with this one can be life-threatening. Even the likes of Professor Raphael Mechoulam, the Israeli organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel who first isolated and identified THC in the 1960's and discovered the Endocannabinoid System 3 decades later, created panels and meeting from across the Atlantic to here in California this coming week, and will address this at the huge CannX conference he hosts every year in his country. Dr. David Bearman of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine has been invited to give his input there. Liz Minda, cannabis advocate and nurse, the mother of Jadyn with Severe Intractable Epilepsy stated, "Epidiolex was the last pharmaceutical we tried and it failed for seizure cessation. Full spectrum cannabis oil stopped seizures and gave her a brighter cognitive and physical ability every day. The best Leap of Faith I have ever taken. Currently, for the last 12 months Jadyn is on CBD only, not Epidiolex!" I was part of her compassion crew that helped wean Jadyn from GW's CBD to the plant - and it's nowhere near the same. It seems that many are quite upset at the fact that Pharmaceutical CBD will be compared to Hemp derived and Cannabis Flower derived CBD products that do not cause the problems nor carry side effect warnings such as GW Pharmaceuticals has been forced to put on it's product by the F.D.A., take a look - you decide. Would you take this drug as a replacement for pharmaceuticals? Would you consider it a 'good representation' of the 'dangers' of Cannabis products? How many of us want these type of warnings blasted out on TV advertisements for the drug creating a new "Reefer Madness 2019" in which people that are considering cannabis as medicine will then change their mind. Approval of a drug, or a way to scare consumers away? WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS (From FDA Website) Hepatocellular Injury: EPIDIOLEX can cause transaminase elevations. (LIVER DAMAGE) Concomitant use of valproate and higher doses of EPIDIOLEX increase the risk of transaminase elevations. See Full Prescribing Information for serum transaminase and bilirubin monitoring recommendations. (5.1)  Somnolence and Sedation: Monitor for somnolence and sedation and advise patients not to drive or operate machinery until they have gained sufficient experience on EPIDIOLEX. (5.2) Suicidal Behavior and Ideation: Monitor patients for suicidal behavior and thoughts. (5.3) Hypersenstivity Reactions: Advise patients to seek immediate medical care.(5.4) Withdrawal of Antiepileptic Drugs: EPIDIOLEX should be gradually withdrawn to minimize the risk of increased seizure frequency and status epilepticus. LET ME INTERRUPT: Status epilepticus (which kills nearly 50,000 people per year, Olympian "FloJo" died of seizures/status in her sleep) is caused by discontinuing a cannabis product? Since when does stopping a cannabis created product CAUSE the problem you're treating? Since when is CBD addictive? Never... but when does a pharmaceutical cause us problems? When are they addictive? Daily. (5.5) ADVERSE REACTIONS: The most common adverse reactions (10% or more for EPIDIOLEX and greater than placebo) are: somnolence; decreased appetite; diarrhea; transaminase elevations; fatigue, malaise, and asthenia; rash; insomnia, sleep disorder, and poor quality sleep; and infections. (6.1). (ALL of the above will be 'disclaimed' in Television and print advertisements, and quickly the world will liken CBD itself to Big Pharma's version) USE IN SPECIFIC POPULATIONS: Pregnancy: Based on animal data, may cause fetal harm. I'm not sure how you're deciding on this one but for me this is quite obvious. It's not CBD that does these things to people, it's pharmaceuticals. It's not the plant that would ever cause these problems - it's pharmaceuticals. Leave it to that industry to dirty the name of a plant that saves and changes lives daily. We as a movement to legalize nature should not step back and watch, once again, as Big Pharma creates a cannabis medicine and it's scheduled way down the list like Marinol (Synthetic THC) which has been a Schedule 3 since 1985. Epidolex proposal is at Schedule 4.   How possibly can our country's leadership sleep at night with the plant these drugs came from still schedule 1 while our citizens fight death defying illness and fight to gain access to a plant to become "Illegally Healed"?
